The Announcement made by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acknowledged at last that to keep the lights and heating on in our homes and the wheels of industry turning it will be necessary to start building new gas-fired power plants because the great science backed leap to transition energy productions to clean, green, pollution free, sustainable, renewable, blah blah blah sources has failed dismally.
Politicians, media, academics and general know - alls told us we should show blind faith in The Science because The Science could not be wrong. It turns out the people who wrote the science were clowns, unable to fathom the very simple scientific principle that if the wind does not blow a wind turbine cannot generate a single watt of electrical energy, and likewise solar panels when the sun does not shine.
The grounds cited by Sunak's government for his turnround, which has infuriated the Green Blob and thrown the Labour Party opposition into confusion are that reliable sources of electricity generation are
needed to back up the intermittency of wind and solar generation. This
simple statement of reality has prompted hostile comments from the usual suspects, claiming that this is inconsistent with Net Zero commitments. Thousands of us in the alt_news community and the blogosphere have been yelling for years that the incompatibility of net zero Green Dreams and modern lifestyles has been staring us all in the fucking face and only the determinedly blind and the terminally stupid could not see this.
The famous economist John Maynard Keynes once said: “When the facts change, I change my mind – what do you do, sir?”. It is surely clear by now that our current Net Zero commitments are not physically achievable or economically affordable on the timescale claimed or indeed ever, absent somebody discovering a way to change the laws of physics.
Many people, engineers, physicists, economists, and those who simply used a bit of common sense have examined how a CO2 neutral electricity system might work in 2035 using government projections of investment in wind and solar generation. Analysis shows that we need at least 30 GW of flexible and reliable generation for about 35% third of the year when wind and solar generation plus supplies over transmission connections to the continent cannot meet demand. This is the problem advisers have warned Mr Sunak of, that makes Britain vulnerable to widespread and prolonged blackouts.
The alternatives to gas are either too expensive, too flaky (ideas for huge banks of batteries , which cost a fortune and are only suitable for short term storage – a few hours at most, replacing natural gas with hydrogen which is expensive to produce and notoriously difficult to store and distribute,) or unlikely to be developed in time. As well as being expensive Hydrogen will require years to develop the necessary infrastructure. Most proposed carbon capture systems for gas plants are still experimental and large-scale storage of carbon dioxide is proving to be more difficult than expected. Serious amounts of nuclear power cannot be built within 10 years.
If we deal only in practicalities and ignore the fairy tales of the \green dreamers,, the alternatives to gas generation will realistically have little impact on CO2 emissions by 2035 and we should not forget the UK is responsible for only a fraction of 1% of global CO2 emissions from human activity. The realistic choice is between extending the life of old gas plants, building new and much more efficient units, returning to coal power or requiring us to adopt medieval lifestyles, living in wattle and daub huts and subsisting on a diet of thin gruel. Given the Government’s behaviour over the last 15 years, private investors will not build the plants required without ironclad guarantees backed by serious amounts of money.
