As this blog predicted early last month, following the catastrophic failure of Ukraine's 'counter offensive' to push Russian troops out of their country, American and European leaders who have previously been solidly behind the doomed Ukrainian war with its powerful neighbour, are rapidly going cool on their pledges of unlimited support for puppet - president Zelensky and his far - right masters.
Reuters reports today that U.S. and European officials have spoken to the Ukrainian government about what possible peace negotiations with Russia might entail to end the war. An anonymous source in the U.S. administration official and one former U.S. official as saying that contacts in Kiev are being advised to consider what concessions Russia might accept in order to end the fighting.
The war in Ukraine, which began when Russian forces crossed the border with the aim of forcing th Kiev regime to cease its ethnic cleansing campaign in the predominantly Russian speaking Donbas region in the east of the country, has now cost thousands of lives on both sides and destroyed vast acreages oif agricultural land. It has also brought the world closer to nuclear war than at any time since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
While mainstream media in the western powers has stuck rigidly, and increasingly ridiculously, to the official narrative that "Ukaine is winning," the reality is that Ukraine has been totally crushed and is unlikely ever to recover as a nation..
In our posting yesterday Boggart Blog reported that in an interview with the The Economist this week, Ukraine's top commander admitted there will be no breakthrough and the battlefield situation is in a stalemate. The New York Times characterized his remarks as "the first time a top Ukrainian commander said the fighting had reached an impasse." In fact his admission was more than that, it was an acknowledgement that the counter offensive has failed, Russia is holding the territory it wanted to occupy without difficulty and in effect the war is lost and to continue fighting is a pointless waste of money and lives.
Back in September the writing was already on the wall when the previously pro Ukraine New York Times administered a harsh dose of reality to anyone foolish enough to cling to the belief that Ukraine had any realistic hope of pushing the Russian army out of Donbas, southeastern Ukraine, and the Crimean peninsula. Its detailed report revealed that the result of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, "Russia now controls nearly 200 square miles more territory in Ukraine compared with the start of the year."
The former Ukrainian provinces (oblasts,) now under Russian control almost exactly match the goals set by President Vladimir Putin at the start of his "special military operation." He said then that Russia sought only to secure Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts (provinces) where the Kiev regime had been attacking ethnic Russian communities since 2014, when a US / NATO backed coup led to the overthrow of a democratically elected government and the
installation of aa authoritarian, anti-Russia government in Kiev. Russia now also controls most of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts, giving Russia a land bridge to the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014. Putin had recognised Donetsk and Luhansk as independent republics shortly before the invasion to give a veneer of legitimacy to his actions. Russian
