As the furore surrounding the (currently unsubstantiated) allegeations of sexual conduct made against comedian and 'truther' Russell Brand surfaced now focuses on whether the censorship and demonetisation of Brand's web pages and video streaming channels is in any way justified because in spite of the trial by media the man has not yet been found guilty in law or even charged with any offences, the whole ttack on him looks more and more like a government / Big Tech stitch up of a person who dared to question certain narratives on issue like the COVID pandemic, climate change and the Ukraine conflict.
The latest development is that now the UK's oppressive and censorious Online Safety Bill has passed into law Rumble, the “free speech” web video site that hosts Russell Brand's webcasts could be forced to go dark on UK networks, legal experts have said.
Rumble, a video-sharing platform based in North America, has become home
to Brand and other figures with extreme views, including Andrew Tate
and Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist. It also hosts videos on race and antisemitism that mainstream
platforms such as YouTube have made more of an effort to take down (while they are hapy to continue supporting paedophilia, self harm, suicide cult and grooming websites.)
Under the Online Safety Bill,
Rumble will be policed by the UK's broadcast media regulator Ofcom because it is accessible in the UK.
Under the new law Rumble will have to prevent children from seeing
pornography and material that promotes self-harm, suicide or eating
disorders. Violent content and material harmful to health, such as
vaccine misinformation, will also have to be kept from children.
According to the text of the new law Ofcom will also be tasked with drawing up guidelines on violence against women and girls that will have to be adhered to. Rumble will also have to take down material that is illegal, such as videos that incite violence or race hate. As somebody with a long career in Information technology behind me, I cannot see how the regulator can possibly police these regulations, so long as the source material is hosted outside the UK. Thus the only course available to the regulator would be to block the site completely, preventing access to the legitimate content available on Rumble.
All these obligations will be hard for Rumble’s management to stomach,
according to Lord Allan of Hallam, a former Facebook executive who has
advised on the bill. However noncooperation could leave Rumble executives open to arrest if they came
to Britain, as the bill provides for senior managers to be held
criminally liable.
Professor Lorna Woods, an internet law expert who was one of the
architects of the bill, said Ofcom had the ability to disrupt or block
Rumble if it did not comply.

It was inevitable The Powers That Be would go after Rumble as a means of silencing Brand. They’re going to
try to do all the same stuff to Rumble that they did to the right wing social networking site Parler, which having become enormously popular among supporters of Donald Trump in the USA was taken offline for a period in 2021 when their hosting company dumped them. Parler was back online and withing a few months and is still enjoying good traffic levels in spite of being censored by Google and other major search engines.
The
state can’t currently do anything about VPNs or blockchains, though, and huge numbers
of people are using those now to avoid censorship. The promblem the state has lies in the fact that the kind of people attracted to work for security agencies, regulatory bodies or law enforcement will never be imaginative enough to ubderstand they ways creative people find to bend or work around the rules.
What is particularly disturbing to those of us who care about liberty is the way the authorities imply Rumble is alone in hosting all the dodgy
material. Maybe they should look into YouTube carrying material showing
animal torture, such as the slaughter of macaques in liquidisers for
amusement or all these dodgy ‘animal rescue’ organisations appealing for
money by torturing and crippling animals, then showing themselves
‘rescuing’ them. Or perhaps they should get inside one of those 'private' groups on Facebook where paedophiles discuss their activities and share tips on grooming techniques.
Every social media organisation has dark corners, but increasingly and dangerously, governments are only interested in shutting down those willing to host people or organisations which question the highly questionable activities of governments, supra - national bureaucracies and their agencies and quasi - religious doomsday cults like Climate Science. We’re at the start of another Dark Age.
