Green levies account for 8pc of domestic electricity bills, with the bulk of these costs being spent on subsidising wind farms
Grant Shapps, the energy secretary, vowed to give Britain the “cheapest energy in Europe” as he set out to overhaul the power system as part of the push to go green. Well as we know a verbal committment isn't worth the paper it's written on, but being one o those politicians who likes to 'follow the science' Shapps was probably blissfully unaware of thw blatantly obvoois problem with achieving 'net zero' via an electricity network based on wind turbines, which relates to the fact that a modern society needs electricity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and nobody i going to find a way to make the wind blow on command in the foreseeable future.
Because of this problem which has apparently been overlooked by scientists although it should be blatantly obvious to anybody with more active brain cells than they have tits or testicles as the case may be, we have to keep gas, biomass, nuclear and coal fuelled generating plants must be kept runnung even when the national grid is not buying their output. Which is why, rather than giving us 'the cheapest electriciy in Europe' the government's efforts to deliver their misbegotten 'net zero' policy are going to give us the most expensive.;
For struggling households and businesses across Britain this can only be bad news, the promise was doubtless well intentioned. But it was also an admission that UK consumers have been burdened with some of Europe's highest bills thanls to scientifically illiterate politicians 'following the science.'.
Industrialists including Britains richest man reputedly,Sir Jim Ratcliffe have complained about the huge costs faced by businesses that must necessarily consume large amounts of energy, while households have been better off in a raft of countries on the Continent in spite of the UK having ample supplies of coal, gas and oil, some already online via the North Sea wells but even more untapped.
Data suggests the coist of energy, swelled by the green levis imposed to make expensive and unprofitable wind and soalr installatioins economically viable (yes, expensive: the green lobby in and outside parliament don't like to talk about that,) has had a crippling effect on the UK economy as the nation tries to adjust to a post - Brexit and post - Pandemic era. According to official figures inflation in February was 10.4pc when energy prices were included, according to official statistics – but a much lower 7.6pc without them.
In the eurozone, inflation including energy bills was 8.5pc. But excluding them, it would actually have slightly been higher than in Britain at 7.8pc.
A toxic combination of net zero charges and subsidies means that unfortunately for Shapps, there are few quick fixes if he wants to meet his goal.
