Does Trump's Crazy Rhetoric Suggest He Plans To Nuke Iran?

American President Donald Trump inexplicably gambled the future of the world and his own political legacy on achieving regime change in Iran. From last summer's first shouts in the campaign to replace the theocratic regime this blog warned that Iran was not some third world failed state which could easily be rolled over.

Now Trump's Iran gamble, which was always a risky bet, is poised on a knife edge, the Iranian's have so far given as good as they get in terms of air and drone strikes, have invoked asymmetric warfare by weaponising the Strait of Hormuz through which, when shipping can move freely through it, approximately a quarter of the worlds oil, natural gas and petroleum products are distributed..

At first, in the opening days of the current round of hostilities most conservative opinion in the USA was behind Trump but currently, five weeks into the war, it is getting harder to find commentators who are backing him to the hilt. Even some of his more usually supportive backers are getting cold feet. Andrew Day in American Conservative is worried that Trump might use nukes in Iran:

A new rhetorical theme emerged last week, when Trump threatened to bomb Iran “back to the Stone Ages”. The phrase is associated with Curtis LeMay, who served as Air Force chief of staff during the Vietnam war. LeMay is known for something else too: his promotion of nuclear weapons and complaint that Americans had a “phobia” of using them.

Trump doesn’t seem to share that deranged perspective, but nuclear anxieties are growing thanks to his belligerence. Two weeks ago, a United Nations representative resigned from his post and leaked the disturbing information that “the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran”. Days earlier, officials from the World Health Organisation told Politico they were worried about a possible nuclear attack.
If Trump decides to go further and actually push the big red button, at least one of his main advisors likely wouldn’t object. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has echoed Trump’s threat to send Iran back to the Stone Age, and he says US armed forces should aim for “maximum lethality, not tepid legality”.

As Trump's threats and claims have become crazier day by day it looks as if nuclear is on the agenda. Many American commentators think there is a strong likelihood the US will use a nuclear weapon. Who is going to object? America's NATO allies in the UK and Europe have surrendered the right to do that because of the way they hve distanced themselves from the whole escapade. Russia and China are Iran's allies but it is unlikely they would risk all out war with The USA over Iran. Both would probably instigate moves to have America censured by theUnited Nations and then take a PR advantage of the situation since their leadership is not crazy like ours is (in the US).

There is no certainty that the Iranians, like the Japanese will surrender should the US use a weapon of mass destruction, more likely they would retreat and allow a US occupation and then wage guerilla warfare for years, knowing that the American public do not like US soldiers returning home in body bags.

Will there be someone in the US government able to stop such a thing? We shall see. This is an existential struggle for Iran but also for the American global hegemony. If the US allows Iran to win that would be the beginning of the end of the Petrodollar Empire as many are predicting.

In A Crazy War When The Best Option Is Retreat The Choice Will Always Be Escalate

People are asking how we got into this crazy war that now threatens to spiral out of control and affect us all materially even if our homelands are ot directly involved in the fighting.

The narative peddled by the American / Israeli lobby to the Gulf Cooperation Couci (GCC) states and Iraqi government (as confessed by that Iraqi MP) was based on the premise that Iran would fall within 3 days, after they killed Khamenei, there’d be a regime change, various rebels and pro-westerners would take over – basically it’d be a cakewalk like Venezuela. That’s how they got the Gulf States on board with the plan to attack Iran.

Simply put, it was a failure of deterrence by Iran. Iran was too soft and was seen as weak by its enemies. To succeed in deterrence, getting nukes would be one method. Shutting up reformists who kept messaging they want to surrender would be another. In fact Iran need never have had a problem getting nukes, in the 1980s I worked for several years in the UK nuclear industry, and in the organisation that employed me (as a computer specialist) we had a number of Iranian scientists who had been working in britain and decided to stay when the Ayatollahs took over.

These guys were highly regarded by their British, French and American colleagues ,and I ;earned in conversation with senior managers that having them on board was regared as a major success by our governments. The Iranias were ahead of us in nuclear research, perhaps because they focused on practicalities rather than getting bogged down in Science - Fiction inspired theories. There were plenty of equally talented scientists who did not get out of Iran, and maybe did not want to. But they had their own nuclear research facilities, their oil provided the money to fund research and they had the people to develop nuclear weapons, directed energy beam weapons and much more.

So why did Iran not develop these technologies for defence purposes when, for almost 50 years western gvernments had been demonising the theocratic,authoritarian regime? We can only speculate, but while we know Iran has been a major sponsor of terrorism, acts of violence and destruction are attributable nly to the terrorist groups rather than Iran itself.

The scenarios incorporated into the propaganda narative justifying recent attacks on Iran, arms race, Iran going nuclear, threat to western interests, developing an aerial dfence shield etc doesn’t matter. Other than the fact that despite the claims made for 'renewables' by green loons, the world still runs on hydrocarbons, there are no valid reasons why western governments have been fearful of Iran.

As for asymmetrical attacks? Same idea. Failure of deterrence, Iran's regime could have closed the Strait of Hormuz whenever it wished, but they didn't. So the US government is not deterred, they convince themselves Iran is too scared of US military power to hold the global economy to ransome. But Washington gambled that Iran would not close the Strait of Hormuz and strangle their own economy, and the Ayatollahs called their bluff.

A planned vote at the UN Security Council on a draft resolution authorizing the “use of force” in the Strait of Hormuz has been abruptly postponed, exposing deep divisions among major powers over how to respond to complications arising from the imposed war on Iran.

The draft, submitted by Bahrain and backed by the United States in UNSC, would further escalate the US-Israeli war on Iran. However, the delay, officially attributed to the Good Friday holiday, comes despite the predetermined voting day, raising questions about underlying political disagreements.

China has warned that authorizing such measures risks further escalation, while Russia has denounced the text as “biased”, signaling potential obstacles to its authorization.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed the idea of a military operation in the strait as unrealistic, cautioning that it would be prolonged and expose global shipping to greater danger.Other NATO members feel the same.

With no new vote date announced and veto threats looming, the future of the resolution remains uncertain, highlighting the growing complexity the US has created at a critical global energy chokepoint.”

Russian military expert and retired Captain First Rank Vasily Dandykin, commenting on Iran’s retaliation to the US and Israel’s strikes on Iran's capital Tehran and other cities and industrial hubs around the country said, “Judging by satellite pictures, one thing is certain: some of [Iran’s] missile strikes hit their targets, including the base of the US 5th Fleet,

“While there were no ships there, it’s clear that the strike itself was significant. It’s clear the base’s famous radar dome – one of the most important and expensive elements of the US missile defense system, was damaged. Some estimates suggest it cost over $1B, and detects missile launches at long ranges. This is a major loss for the US, and because it probably works in Israel’s interest, theirs as well.”

Iran’s targeting of US bases also included “real losses” of personnel, something the administration may try to minimize, Dandykin believes.

Going forward, Iran could launch additional strikes on the bases it already hit, find new targets, and, “most likely,” target “American naval forces,” according to the observer. It seems the retired officer knows a thing or two because almost as soon as his comment had hit the online news sites we were hearing that Iran's Revolutionary Guard says it has targeted the massive US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln which was sent to Middle Eastern waters by President Donald Trump as part of its pressure campaign aimed at bringing down the Islamic theocracy that has ruled Iran for almost 50 years.

But it has often been said that a ship cannot defeat a for and air raids alone do not win a war. Iran is on a position to block the Strait of Hormuz and cause economic chaos.

Iran's forces launched four ballistic missiles toward USS Abraham Lincoln today (Sunday 1 March), the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp said in a statement reported by state media. It seems likelt the carrier was heading to the Gulf to prevent Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which 30% of the world's oil moves in huge, vulnerable tankers.

The giant warship is one of two aircraft carriers deployed to the region in recent weeks, and the only one relatively close to Iranian shores.The attempted strike is part of Iran’s revenge attacks after the US and Israel killed supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

The US military said it hit an Iranian ship as part of its ongoing operation.

"The ship is currently sinking to the bottom of the Gulf of Oman at a Chah Bahar pier," the US military wrote. "As the president said, members of Iran's armed forces, IRGC and police 'must lay down your weapons'. Abandon ship."

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer who spent the past week trying to appease President Trump and save his disatrous Chagos deal while simultaneously sucking up to the Iranian regime, today abandoned this futile attempt to ride two horses with one arse, especially as he's better known as a sausage jockey than an equestrian stunt man, and declared UK support for the US / Israeli campaign.

It has often been said common sense is an uncommon quality. You can already see how the US and Israel are losing the plot in a conflict many fear could escalate into nulear war. Trump talks about four weeks, while Iran is ready to fight US and Israel for months, maybe years, and even US lawmakers can feel their president is in deep trouble, with no real plan after the first strikes. Needless to say, a prolonged war with Iran around the Gulf will lead to an energy crisis in the developed nations

It is the same show as last year when the US and Israel bombed Iran's nuclear plants, but decalred victory too soon: chest beating, “shock and awe,” TV bragging, bombs, planes, fireworks in the sky, but no real strategy and no way out. We saw this in Iraq, we saw it in Afghanistan. That is why I am sure US and Israel will end up stuck and bleeding.

And somewhere, Putin is watching all this, smiling, counting every mistake, knowing Washington is burning energy, money, and power in another endless war it cannot win.

BlackRock CEO and World Economic Forum President Larry Fink Lusts For AI Replacing Difficult-to-Control Humans

The mask is off. In a stunning admission, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink boasts of a global business model built on unprecedented access and influence over the highest levels of government—before they even take power.

Speaking to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2024, Fink told his audience: “I can argue in the developed countries the big winners are countries that have shrinking populations. We always used to think shrinking population is a cause for negative growth, but in my conversations with the leadership of these large, developed countries that have xenophobic immigration policies, they don’t allow anybody to come in, shrinking demographics — these countries will rapidly develop robotics and AI and technology. And if the promise, and it’s going to happen, if the promise of all of that transforms productivity, which most of us think it will, we’ll be able to elevate the standard of living of countries, the standard of living of individuals, even with shrinking populations.

The paradigm of negative population growth is going to be changing, and the social problems that one will have in substituting humans for machines is going to be far easier in those countries that have declining populations.” — Larry Fink, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BlackRock, World Economic Forum, April 2024″

As usual now, the task of throwing a spanner in the WEF works fell to Donald J Trump.

As recently as 2022 Fink was all in on the idea that a focus on environmental, social and corporate governance issues — E.S.G., for short — does not conflict with making money. Reducing a company’s carbon footprint, for example, makes the business more resilient in the long term, which is in investors’ interests.

“We focus on sustainability not because we’re environmentalists, but because we are capitalists and fiduciaries to our clients,” Mr. Fink wrote.

He suggested that E.S.G. was not a fad but a permanent feature of the corporate world. Business leaders who do not adapt to the new reality, he suggested, risk being overtaken by younger and more innovative rivals in step with the times.

However by 2024, this shallow opportunist had changed his tune. At the WEF Fink, a big fan of Artificial Intelligence and its potential for replacing human workers, ironically destroyed net-zero when it comes to the power needed for AI: “By 2030 [data centers] need 30 gigawatts.. Where’s that power gonna come from? To power these data companies you can’t have intermittent power like wind & solar”

Since then Fink has taken over the helm of the Global Governance advocating WEF from German businessman Klaus Schwab, the ageing scion of a family that was prominent in the Nazi movement during the 1930s. While Schwab was a slightly ridiculous figure, speaking like a Bond villain but looking more like a Scooby Doo villain, Fink take the sinister undertone of authoritarianism and agendas that include depopulation, the abolition of private propery and full specttrum dominance that accompanies all WEF statements to a new level.

His words reveal a chilling blueprint: gain control over the retirement funds of nations (from Mexico to Japan to the UK) to position BlackRock as an indispensable "partner." Then, systematically court political candidates, not as a constituent, but as a global financier securing access and influence regardless of who wins.

Now, as a new co-chairman of the World Economic Forum, Fink’s influence is set to be formalized and amplified. This isn't conspiracy theory; it's a corporate leader openly describing a strategy to shape policy and governance from the top down.

The fusion of mega-finance (BlackRock), globalist governance (WEF), and political pre-selection is the defining threat to national sovereignty and democratic integrity in our time. This is the unelected engine of the "stakeholder capitalism" machine.

It’s not investment. It’s infiltration.

Fortunately Fink does not seem to have noticed a political shift among voters across the developed world away from globalist thinking and towards nationalism

Has Trump Declared Victory Too Soon - Iran's Nuclear Plants Reported Undamaged By Independent Sources

Bloomberg's latest headline , Where is Iran's Uranium? highlights the 'biggest mystery' that remains in the war. There's also the pressing question of whether Trump's massive airstrikes from B-2 bombers actually destroyed the facilities and their allged stockpiles of enriched uranium.

The Iranians aren't dumb, they have highly advanced nuclear technologies and likely took drastic steps to further protect, conceal, or likely move these enriched stockpiles - some 400kg according to most reports - as wave after wave of Israeli warplanes hit Iran, significantly before the US sent its bombers this past weekend. It appears core components are still intact - though Iran has long maintained it is merely for peaceful nuclear energy development.

The NY Times is currently reporting that the US operation merely set Iran's nuclear program back by a few months. Well this blog has always warned Iran would be no pushover.

And emerging satellite intelligence also points to the stockpile having not been destroyed, which contradicts the current 'victory lap' claims being made by President Trump and some of his top officials. Below is a CNN report based on an assessment by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA):

One unnamed defense official quoted in the report says centrifuges are largely "intact." And more based on the apparently 'Top Secret' leaked DIA intel report: “So the (DIA) assessment is that the US set them back maybe a few months, tops,” this person added.

After getting premature reports of a successful air strike on Iran's nuclear fuel operation Trump tried to use the claimed success to force a ceasefire on the warring nations, Israel and Iran. That was never going to work because neither side really wants one, which is a repeat of the situation in Ukraine. And just the same as in Ukraine, Trump is learning somewhat belatedly it is impossible to negotiate with nutcases.

As of this point, the latest Middle East war seems to be running its course and as Israel and Iran have been building up to this latest intallment in their 3000 year old quarrel for several decades it is unlikely Trump's efforts to make a deal would work even if he was as good a negotiator as he thinks he is.

There's too much money to make on the table and available for the right sales pitch. There are multiple layers. Israel vs Iran for their own reasons is the base layer. I suspect Russian oligarchs want a new client state, only one that won't be a cash drain like East Germany. Our NATO's imbecile leaders say 'Step Right Up and Let 'Er Rip." The Euro / US MIC and probably Russia's are both weeping "Thank You, Jesus."

Trump can howl and bluster but he's not in control. Only Israel and Iran can decide to shut it down. Fat chance. 3000 years of history says otherwise. Ordinary hate, dumbfounding superstition, and too much cash available for the taking will keep the show on the road.

Most of the commenters and a lot of everyone else treat this war as a reality TV spectacle. There are caricature good guys and bad guys which are fun to take sides with. It's a team sports event with a soccer riot that's always available to jump into.

Trump's Risky Bet - American Attacks On Iran Raise Risk Of Global Conflict

American cities are on high alert after US Air Force long range bombers, acting on orders from President Trump carried out airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend, declaring the operation a "spectacular military success" while warning Iran to negotiate peace with Israel.

Meanwhile financial markets in the west had a bad case of squeaky bottom syndrom as Iran stepped up its threat to blockade The Strait of Hormuz, through which around 25% of the world's crude oil passes. Such action would cause economic chaos to the global economy. To underline its threat the Iranian government jammed GPS signalling around the strait, disrupting the movementof tankers in and out of the Persian Gulf. In terms of Iran's ability to wage asymmetric war, stopping tanker traffic through Hormuz is the doomsday weapon.

Only hours after news of Trump's strike on Iranian nuclear facilities was reported, the NYPD issued a statement confirming additional patrols at "religious, cultural, and diplomatic sites" across New York City. The department stopped short of confirming any direct threats but obviously fears that Iran has terrorist operatives embedded in the city. Similarly, Washington D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department pledged to "safeguard residents, businesses, and visitors" while monitoring intelligence.It would be naive to pretent that after the Biden era of 'open borders' Iran and other enemies of the USA hae not infiltrated American cities had made plans to damage infrastructure and disruput daily life.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass echoed the cautious stance, stating that while no "credible threats" had been identified, the LAPD was stepping up patrols near places of worship and "sensitive sites." Miami-Dade County also joined the security surge, with sheriff’s deputies increasing visibility countywide.

Former NYPD Inspector Paul Mauro, who specialized in counterterrorism, warned that authorities would focus on locations tied to the conflict, including Shia mosques (Iran’s dominant sect) and Jewish community centers. "You never know what’s going to develop," Mauro said, noting that police would also ramp up cyber surveillance to track online threats.

The Kremlin has announced Monday that Russia stands ready to help Iran in its ongoing conflict with Israel and the United States in the Middle East, based on specific requests.

Such assistance "all depends on what Iran needs," presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained, as quoted in TASS. "We have offered our mediation efforts. This is concrete. We have stated our position, which is also a very important form of support for the Iranian side."

"Going forward, everything will depend on what Iran needs at this moment," Peskov continued, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is currently in Moscow, preparing to meet with President Vladimir Putin.

Aljazeera reports today that Russia and China have strongly condemned US attacks on Iranian nuclear sites, warning they could drag the world into a broader war and set a dangerous international precedent.

The Chinese government also weighed in, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi condemning both the Israeli strikes on Iran and the US bombardment of its nuclear facilities. He said the rationale of attacking over “possible future threats” sent the wrong signal to the world and urged a return to diplomacy.

While the usual suspects in Washington and among the NATO nations were declaring victory and calling for regime change in Tehran, regardless of the fact that Iran is far from defeated, not all voices in the west were praising Trump's unofficial declaation of war.

Germany is importing huge volumes of nuclear-generated electricity due to recent unfavorable weather for renewable energy production — placing the left-wing government’s decision to shut down Germany’s nuclear power plants firmly under the spotlight in the lead-up to next month’s federal elections.

Rather than producing its own clean nuclear energy, Berlin is importing electricity from France at a far higher cost this week as winter grips the nation with colder temperatures, overcast skies, and weak winds drastically reducing solar and wind power generation.

“Friday is a very weak day. There will also be little wind on Saturday. Monday will be almost a total loss for wind energy. Tuesday will also be difficult. The high-pressure system is extremely stable,” warned weather expert Karsen Brandt from Donnerwetter.de, as cited by Bild.

With high energy demand but insufficient green electricity, Germany’s grid operators have had to resort to importing energy at a premium — primarily from France, where nuclear power plants are running at full capacity.

Germany still had its own nuclear production facilities until April 2023, but the left-wing federal government under Social Democrat (SPD) Chancellor Olaf Scholz, supported by the Greens, shut them all down. The move was highly controversial, at a time when energy prices were sky-high due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and European nations were attempting to wean themselves off Russian gas.

Just five weeks before the federal election, the SPD-Green government’s energy policy is under intense scrutiny, with supply risks and skyrocketing prices fueling growing criticism.

Energy expert Prof. Manuel Frondel of the RWI Institute described the situation bluntly. “By phasing out nuclear power and coal, we have become heavily dependent on foreign countries and accepted higher supply risks.” ... Read full article >>>

UK Faces A Fate Worse Than Blackouts - Net Zero Electricity If Energy Policy Is Not Abandoned

Major UK domestic and commercial gas supplier Centrica’s stark warning last week that Britain’s gas storage is now “concerningly low” with less that a week's supply in reserve after the last period of 'dunkelflaute' (low to zero wind and sub zero temperatures,) cause demand to soar, triggered desperate measures to keep the lights on, with some of Britain’s oldest power stations being paid £2 million an hour to meet demand, monry which wll end up on consumers; bills.
The first two weeks of 2025 saw first storms which forced the wind farms on which we are increasingly dependent of energy, to be shut down to prevent high winds damaging the vanes on the turbines, followed by a period of 'dunkelflaute' a weather pattern of low or zero wind speeds accompanied by freezing temperatures that can last for a few days to several weeks and this time gave us coldest night in Britain for 15 years. It was also the first real test for Britain’s new National Energy System Operator (NESO), part of the labour government's mission to create a new Qango a day throughout its term of office.
Could this new bureaucratic entity convince us that it was able to deliver reliable and affordable supplies and was fit for purpose? Of course it couldn't, bueucracies never deliver anything except incompetence and failure. NESO failed on both counts and as a result consumers and businesses are now facing huge extra costs which will find their way onto bills in the coming months.
Our governments' (past and present for two hand a half decades,) efforts towards the mytical Net Zero (for comparison think of The Holy Grail on steroids,) which have only worked to the detriment of our Country, Citizens and Society have just been wiped out by the toxic fumes from the Los Angeles wildfires in America. The next volcano to erupt somewhere in the world will spew more CO2 and toxic gases into the atmosphere than we could save in ten years were we to switch off all carbon dioxide emitting technologies and resturn to a medieval lifestyle.
As we have seen over the last week no wind no energy generated, but this clownshow government and Ed Miliband, its idiot Energy Secretary is going to build wind farms, solar panels and pylon routes all from imported technology, because in their fanatical zeal to 'lead the world to net zero' our governments have forced the furnaces and factories down.
This country sits on vast reserves of coal, we still have Gas in the north see, we have unimaginable reserves of oil/gas in the Falklands and we have designed and built mini nuclear reactors which are selling abroad ?
We can only wonder how many old people have died during this most recent cold weather spell? No government department or agency is going to be in a hurry to release such data because should it become public the streets woud surely be filled with protesters once more.
Labours only answer is more bloody windmills, solar panels and pylons, thereby ensuring prices will go even higher, whilst the government misinformation team tries to distract us with crackpot schemes to import solar energy from The Sahara desert, talk of Artificial Intelligence boosting the economy. Unfortunately the giant data centres needed for AI systems eat electricirty and will need a decicated power station each according to reports.
Sadly the case is Mad Miliband and Sleazy SStarmer can build 10 times the number of windmills and thousands of miles of electricity pylons, and cover vast acreages of good farmland with solar panels which will deface and destroy the natural beauty of our countryside but when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn't shine (sunset to sunrise every day at least,) they’re all absolutely useless.
No amout of mathematical modelling by pseudo scientits can solve the inherent unreliability of wind and solar power by building more windmills and sun farms. So we’ll be forever stuck with the problem of providing emergency back up power at eye watering prices as we’ve just seen in the last few days.
The situation can only become worse the further Mad Miliband, the swivel eyed idealogue forces us to rely on wind and solar by shutting down the gas and nuclear powered generating stations. Furthermore, if the wind blows too hard these windmills can’t operate because it’s dangerous and if the wind blows just right we occasionally have too much wind power and the operators are then actually paid for the power they would have been able to produce had they not been told to shut some of them down to prevent the grid being damaged by overloads.
These problem will never go away. Somebody, an engineer, logician or economist needs explain in very simple terms to the stupid politicians and OCD afflicted pseudo scientists that the only way to stop and start gas fired power stations quickly is by utilizing open cycle gas turbines but these burn twice as much gas and produce twice the CO2 emissions than combined cycle gas turbines which are much more efficient but are designed to run continuously and once taken offline cannot be brought back in less than a few hours. Put simply wind power is unaffordable and actually increases our overall CO2 emissions when looking at our power production from all sources.
Britain now has the highest industrial energy prices in the world, has fallen out of the world’s top 10 manufacturers, increasingly risks power rationing, and is spending over £3 billion a year to import electricity from Europe. A generation of flawed energy policies have wreaked havoc on consumers and the problem is getting worse, contrary to Ed Miliband’s belief that prioritising wind and solar over new nuclear and gas is the answer.
UK electricity prices are nearly 50 per cent above the International Energy Agency median for industrial electricity and 80 per cent above the median for domestic users. Our businesses pay almost four times as much as Americans for power and our consumers three times. This is hugely concerning when Labour’s net zero plans will see Britain using much more electricity for cars and household heating, irrespective of it being far more expensive than gas.
Why are we still insisting in going down this futile, blinkered route - Ed Miliband is throwing SO much money at? What happens when our credit runs out, which it will do eventually because the government must bortow every month to finance its day to day business. We CAN'T afford all these wild plans - what use are the reserves in the North Sea when it's not politically correct to use fossil fuels. Our approach appears to be lets throw more money at the problem while other countries around us are being pragmatic and using what they have to hand.
Following its launch in October, the aforementioned NESO released its Winter Outlook report which forecast peak electricity demand would be 44.4 gigawatts (GW) at any one time. But last week saw demand for electricity close to 50 GW. At this critical time, output from wind turbines had fallen away and there were problems importing power from Europe on which Britain is becoming overdependent.
Britain’s chronic lack of gas storage, at just 12 days, is another failure of national planning. While France enjoys robust storage at 113 days and Germany at 89, the failure to act will now encourage suppliers to charge more when demand spikes on cold days, especially as Britain is one of Europe’s largest per capita users of gas. Why wasn’t storage prioritised, especially after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine?
The failure of this most important national policy represents one of the biggest failings in statecraft since World War Two. The consequences are stark, ranging from the loss of our competitiveness and rising fuel poverty, to the UK becoming dangerously vulnerable to future energy crises. And for what end?
Facts are important. Between 2004 and 2021, before the war in Ukraine, the industrial price of energy in Britain tripled in nominal terms (153 per cent) or doubled relative to consumer prices. Electricity prices have doubled since 2019. This has led to a huge slice of Britain’s manufacturing base already choosing to relocate overseas. Since 2010, over 200,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost; as a share of GDP, manufacturing has halved since the 1990s.
A failing energy policy inflicts huge pain on households, industry and the wider economy. It restricts investment, offshores energy intensive industry, and stunts job creation. We must urgently address and tackle how and why a generation of political leaders and civil servants have failed and continue to do so.

The latest United Nations (“UN”) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (“IPCC”) report, published this week, once again, in scaremongering tone and the language of the panic stricken, claims that the planet is in peril (we are facing climate disaster, the clock is at one minute to midnight, we must take urgent action to destroy civilisation if we are to save the planet, the usual over - dramatised guff designed to spread fear and panic,) basically the same claim as they have been making at least twice a month for the past 20 years.
