Statism has turned Detroit Into Ayn Rand's Starnesville
When the city of Detroit, once the greatest car making city in the world, declared bankruptcy, it seemed like the formal announcement of the death of the American dream. But from another perspective the plight of Detriot should concern us all. Writers who try to warn of the dangers of big government paternalism usually talk of George Orwell's 1984 vs Huxley's brave New World. Now there is a new contender, Ayn Rand's Starnesville.
The once great motor city now languishes in squalor as a result of Nanny State restrictions on business, punitive taxes and and the dependency culture high unemployment and an economy based on social welfare payments encourage. Add to that the uncompetitiveness that results from over regulation and you have Blade Runner meets '1984'.
Serves 'em right though for letting the Motown record label church out all that nice, safe, sanitized bubble gum music and call it soul. Come to think of it, the music was as anodune as the cars they turned out through the 1980s and 1990s.
