Though rumours have been circulating in the shipping industry for weeks, this story of a possible game changing event has so far been ignored by of major US news organisations. Ryan Peterson of port operator Flexport blew the whistle last week on a looming industrial dispute that could bring trade at most major American seaports to a standstill.
Peterson tweeted (or Xd or whatever,) :
"The biggest wildcard in the presedential election that nobody's talking about? The looming port strike that could shut down all east coast and Gulf ports just 36 days before the election."
He then followed through with:
If the International Longshoremans' Association (ILA) goes on strike tens of thousands of businesses could miss the key Black Friday / Cyber Monday peak sales period.
The economic impact of such a strike would be catastrophic for the US economy.
In 2023, U.S. seaport trade totaled $2.12 trillion. If the ILA strikes, U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports—which handle 72% of that trade—would grind to a halt. The ILA union has voted to prepare for a strike beginning October first, and the industry watchers do not believe this is an idle threat.
If the strike goes ahead it could be a major issue for Democrats: economic problems tend to hurt the incumbent party.
It would also put pressure on the Biden administration to halt the strike by invoking the Taft-Hartley Act, which could start a fight with organized labor. The surprise decision by the Teamsters, Democratic party stalwarts for generations, to not the candidacy of Kamala Harris shows that there are already cracks in the Democrats alliance with organized labor.
“The economic impact is a tsunami when we potentially have half of the country’s ports closing down,” Margaret Kidd, associate professor of supply chain and logistics at the University of Houston, told MarketWatch.
The dispute has arisen because The International Longshoremen’s Union is demanding significantly higher wages and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container handling logistiics equipment used in the loading or loading of freight at the 36 affected U.S. ports. Whenever and however the dispute is resolved, it’s likely to affect how freight moves in and out of the United States for years to come.
If a strike were resolved within a few days, experts say, consumers probably wouldn’t notice any major shortages of retail goods. But a strike that persists for more two weeks it would likely cause a shortage of some consumer products, although most holiday retail goods have already arrived from overseas.
A prolonged strike would almost certainly hurt the U.S. economy. Even a brief strike would cause disruptions. Heavier vehicular traffic would be likely at key points around the country as cargo was diverted to West Coast ports, where workers belong to a different union not involved in the strike. And once the longshoremen’s union eventually returned to work, a ship backlog would likely result. For every day of a port strike, experts say it takes four to six days to clear it up.
This means if the strike goes ahead by Nov 5th it will be affecting millions of American voters. And the Trump campaign will not even need to point the finger of blame at the Biden / Harris administration's loonytoons economic policies, everybody will know what has caused the strike.
