In a sign of growing rifts within Labour, senior union figures and those on the Left of the party suggested that Morgan McSweeney, Sir Keir’s chief of staff, had plotted Ms Haigh’s demise.
It was McSweeney rather than Starmer himself who told Ms Haigh on Thursday night that it might be best for her to resign after her the story of her conviction emerged.
One union source described him as a “shadow prime minister” for whom anyone on the soft Left of the party had become a target of efforts by extremists in the party to undermine SStarmer and that in collaboration with union leaders Morgan McSweeney, the PM’s chief of staff, plotted former transport secretary’s downfall.
It was Mr McSweeney who told Ms Haigh on Thursday night that it might be best for her to resign after her conviction emerged.
Describing Mr McSweeney as a “shadow prime minister [who] tells Keir what to do”, the insider added: “You’re a target when you’re on the soft Left.”
McSweeney has become an increasingly powerful figure in government after winning a power struggle with his predecessor Sue Gray and sidelining deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.
The Boggart Bloggers suspected when we first read of Louise Haigh's undisclosed criminal conviction that there was more to the story than Haigh had admitted in her official explanation, and the far less innocent truth is why she had to resign as transport secretary.

on more than one occasion she claimed her work phones had been lost or
stolen to her employer, apparently to get them to buy her new phones.
The employer and fellow managers became suspicious so they called the
police, and that is when she made up the story to the police about being
burgled, which we can gather was all false. Her supposedly stolen
phone was at some point discovered to be active and in her possession,
and this is when the police decided she had lied to them. In the UK lying to the police is a criminal offence in itself.
Her entire official story for resigning is now that she was mugged and mistakenly thought her phone was stolen when it was not, but this is apparently a complete sham. This is in The Times newspaper. and on their website which is behind a paywall. They have done a good job of clearing away this politician's misinformation. This is from an MP who went after Boris Johnson for his lack of integrity.

So she lied to her bosses, saying she had been burgled. Then she claimed to have been mugged and her phone stolen in the course of the mugging. Sometime later she discovered that the phone had not been stolen. When she turned it on the police were able to see that the phone was again in use. After an interview, the police referred the matter to the Crown Prosecution Service, which determined that an offence had been committed and that there was enough evidence to secure a conviction. Ms Haigh was found guilty of the charge of “fraud by misrepresentation”. She received a “discharge”, which I understand is the least punishment for a minor offence. But again there seems to be more to the story. Most people involved in active politis should know know that in the United Kingdom somebody with a conviction cannot stand for a seat in Parliament. You can guarantee that any conviction, however apparently minor the infraction, will be winkled out and exposed. It’s a resigning matter. End of story. It’s supposed to ensure honest politicians, which is one of the greatest oxymorons there is, but it is generally accepted that the lies should only start as soon as they’re sworn in on their first day. However, it has been suggested that, while working for the insurance company Aviva, Ms Haigh had recurrently reported loss of her company supplied phone. The company had begun to suspect that the phones were not lost but that she wanted an upgraded phone. It seems at first glance that even to charge her with an offence was curious, given her explanation. To be found guilty is even more curious. Now to have to resign her cabinet position after such a trivial offence and sentence is very strange, which lends some credence to the suggested involvement of Aviva. RELATED:
