Just a little update in this as the legal wrangle between the FBI and Apple Inc. crawls through the labyrinthine US legal system. As someone who spent thirty years in the field of digital technology I can tell you the National Security Agency has been able to 'unlock iPhones from the first product launch. So all this kerfuffle about Apple refusing to unlock a terrorists iPhone for the FBI can only come down to one thing. The NSA consider Apple to be their exclusive asset.
An article in OS news opens by saying those of us with experience in digital technology have known about the nasties hidden in your internet enabled computers and gadgets for years. This is absolutely true. Why did people like me not sound the alarm then, you might well ask? In the case of smartphones I confess tosheer indifference.
I have a ten year old Nokia cellphone that gives me everything I want in the way of communications. One hearing this a lot of people immediately assume I am some kind of technophobe. On the contrary, I work from home hand have an office full of high tech tools, camcorder, digital SLR, voice recorder, video mixing desk, five computers from a heavyweight tower to a lightweight notebook, I run Linux mostly because Windows is too clunky.
And when I am out of the office the only people I want to talk to if they call are members of my family and close friends. So a very basic cellphone is a logical choice, why spend money on something I will not use. And anyway, I've always known about the posterns in Smart Phone technology and so I'm happy to not share my life with manufacturers and service providers.
