EU Power Grab Backed By France, Germany, Aims To End Member States Right To Veto Bureaucrats Policy Moves

In what may be the beginning of the end for the European Union's ambition to become a federal superstate, Germany and France are collaborating to put an end to the right of veto, currently held by every member state to veto any policy proposed by the Brussels bureaucracy before the end of this year. The fractious debate over the issue has led to increased tensions between members in recent months, but following a meeting between Chancellor Scholz and President Macron the measure has now been put back on the agenda.

France and Germany are convinced that a large-scale institutional reform of the European Union, including the abolition of the veto on European Council votes, could be achieved this year, French EU Affairs Minister Laurence Boone and German Minister of State Anna Lührmann told Euractiv.

“This is one of the options we want to explore in order to maintain our position as a global player with the EU’s common foreign and security policy,” Lührmann said.

He added that “it would be an important signal in other policy areas if we were to move to qualified majority voting already this year” and expressed confidence that this would happen.

The two ministers said that both countries consider it important to abolish unanimous voting in the European Council in areas such as foreign policy and taxation before the enlargement of the European Union. This could mean, for example, that Brussels would be able to implement a flat tax rate across the EU or even involve itself more deeply in the war, both moves that Hungary has rejected and in some cases even deployed its veto to stop. Paris and Berlin claim abolishing the veto is a change that is possible without amending the EU treaties, a point hotly contested by a number of European parties, as it would not only give Brussels enormous power but also the largest states, such as Germany and France. This would subsequently allow for the EU to enact a liberal immigration policy, green rules and various other progressive goals without any hindrance from Hungary and other smaller, conservative nations. The introduction of qualified majority voting would remove the veto on foreign policy issues, which would mean that only 15 of the 27 member states — representing 65 percent of the EU’s population — would have to agree to make particularly important foreign and defense policy decisions affecting the EU as a whole.

France and Germany are confident that a partial institutional reform of the EU will be possible this year, the French and German ministers of state for Europe, Laurence Boone and Anna Lührmann, told EURACTIV in an exclusive interview.

While the shift to qualified majority voting would be initially “in a limited, very pragmatic way” to “show that the EU 27 is capable of reforming itself”, there is still more to come afterwards, Lührmann stated.

One of the reasons Germany is supporting this move relates to the German push to expand the Union further east, with seven candidates waiting for their applications to progress the 27 would increase to the 34. At first glance it is difficult to understand German enthusiasm for admitting more economic basket cases to the EU until we remember that in the past Germany, France and Brussels have all made references to the idea of extenting the European Union into North Africa and The Middle East. It is about power, pure and simple.

The current EU is a lot different to the original Common Market of which France and Germany were among the six founder members 70 years ago, and a different animal to the European Economic Community (EEC) that I worked for in the 1980s. It started as a trade association but there has been a gradual and ongoing creep to increasing surrender of sovereu=ign powers by member states to an increasingly authoritarian central power hub. That centralising trend gained a huge boost as a result of the Ukraine conflict. Democracy and the will and welfare of the people has been thrown out of the window. The EU is fast becoming a dictatorial regime of power hungry elites that usurps the sovereignty of every member nation. But the move to a single, centralised government is doomed, while the elites dream of becoming part of a global governance scheme, in the towns and cities of member states resistance is growing.

In Germany the AfD (Alternatif fur Deutschland,) having weathered a torrent of smears, lies, and adverse propaganda, Germany's populist centre right paty is riding high in polls and doing well in regional elections, the Sweden Democrats, having been prevented by the EU from participating in a ruling coalition in 2017 were, at the last election in 2022 too popular to be stitched up by political jiggery pokery. Georgia Meloni and her Brothers of Italy party lead a Eurosceptic centre right coalition government in Italy and all around Europe opposition to centralisation and support for democratic nationalism are gaining ground.

However an atempt by France and Germany to remove the veto and thus, together, dominate the EU may be a good thing as it will give much more momentum to AfD, Rassemblement National, Brothers of Italy, Sweden Democrats and simlar anti - federalisation parties and may prompt an exodus of smaller states from EU membership. If we aggregate all this negative sentiment, add a Russian victory in Ukraine and a single currency in hyperinflation the result will be the total implosion of the EU.

Unlike the federal superstate that is the USA, where individual states have no individual cutural background or political history as sovereign states outside their Union, every EU member has a distinct culture or in some cases several regional cultures and centuries of independent history, their own language and traditions, and their flags, in many cases symbols of past struggles to preserve that political and /p>

People in Europe don't sing the EU anthem, The Ode To Joy, the French sings The Marseillaise, the Germans Lied der Deutschen, Thou Ancient, Thou Free in Sweden, Where My Home Is in The Czech Republic and so on. Europeans do not salute the EU flag, but The Union Flag, UK; Tricolor, France; Bundesflagge ("Federal Flag") Germany, Italy and several more,); Rojigualda ("Red-weld"), Spain; Dannebrog ("Danish cloth"), Denmark; Biało-Czerwona ("White-Red"), Poland. Peoples' loyalty is to their nation, and the discussion within the EU that is dividing nations now revolvces around whether the union is a benefit or a liability to their nation. Take away the last shred of national sovereignty from them and subject them to the rule of unelected buresucrats from different cuktural backgrounds and the people will turn away from the idea of a federal European superstate in even greater numbers.

Jingoistic Western Triumphalism Will Not End The War In Ukraine Or Cripple Putin, But It Is Crippling Western Nations
As the war in Ukraine grinds on and Russia steps up its economic war against the west and in particular The European Union, claims made recently by the idiotically 'woke' leaders of Europe's main economic and military powers that the West has a once-in-a–generation chance to severely weaken Russia’s capabilities, both militarily and geopolitically, look increasingly hollow. Putin's critics have cited 'Western unity' as one of the main reasons why Russia will be economically destroyed and politically humiliated when the Ukraine's military finally claim victory.
