Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab - but feared debate could hurt ‘international harmony’

Emails to top US scientoific adviser Dr Anthony Fauci show ‘likely’ explanation identified at start of coronavirus pandemic, but there were worries about saying so.

Leading British and US scientists thought it was likely that Covid accidentally leaked from a laboratory but were concerned that further debate would harm science in China, emails show.

An email from Sir Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust, on February 2 2020 said that “a likely explanation” was that Covid had rapidly evolved from a Sars-like virus inside human tissue in a low-security lab.

The email, to Dr Anthony Fauci and Dr Francis Collins of the US National Institutes of Health, went on to say that such evolution may have “accidentally created a virus primed for rapid transmission between humans”.

But a leading scientist told Sir Jeremy that “further debate would do unnecessary harm to science in general and science in China in particular”. Dr Collins, the former director of the US National Institutes of Health, warned it could damage “international harmony”.

Boris Johnson faces calls to quit after lockdown party apology

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has apologised for attending a "bring your own booze" party during the first coronavirus lockdown. He told MPs the event in the Downing Street garden was "technically within the rules" but he should have realised how it would look to the public.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the PM must now quit over what he called his "ridiculous" lies and excuses. Mr Johnson is also under pressure from his own MPs over the May 2020 party.

The Commons fell silent at the start of Prime Minister's Questions, as Mr Johnson admitted he had been at the event for about 25 minutes, so that he could "thank groups of staff" for their hard work.

Rishi Sunak missing from PMQs as Boris Johnson faces calls for his resignation

Rishi Sunak has tweeted to announce that he will be absent from Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday at noon. The Chancellor of the Exchequer posted that will instead be in Ilfracombe, North Devon. His location is about four-and-a-half hours away from the House of Commons.

It will not be the first time that Rishi Sunak has been absent, with the Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves commenting that Sunak is 'in hiding' as Labour set out proposals on Tuesday for a VAT cut to household energy bills. ...
