Since Donald Trump ordered America’s much anticipated attack on Venezuela last weekend, mainsteam media has given the unfolding situation blanket coverage and just about every political and economic colunist has offered their attempt at revealing Trump’s real intentions. It’s all about securing the oil, stopping the drugs, defeating China, Russia and Iran, or re-establishing ‘hemispheric dominance’. The truth, of course, is that it’s about all of that and more.
Washington’s real goal is probably to make Venezuela once again a sfe investment for private US capital. That's my take anyway although I have no communcations channel into White House thinking than anyone else. If the new acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, refuses, then Trump has made it clear Venezuela will be kept as an economic basket-case, through continuing sanctions and a US naval blockade, until Wahington can install a puppet who will do its bidding.
Venezuela’s crime for which it has been punished for decades is trying to offer a different economic and social model to America’s rampant, planet-destroying, neoliberal capitalism. The deepest fear of the West’s political and media class is that western publics, subjected to permanent austerity as billionaires grow ever richer off the back of ordinary people’s immiseration, may rise up if they see a different system that looks after its citizens rather than its wealth elite.
Unfortunately for Venezuelans that althernative, offered by Hugo Chavez and his successor Nicolas Maduro, was socialism, which is always doomed to fail in ways even more destructive than rampant capitalism. Again the world failed to heed Schumpeter's warning: Capitalism always contains the seeds of its own destruction, socialism always leads to fascism. Josef Schumpeter was an Austrian economist and a supporter of social democracy, which in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Germany successfully blended a capitalist business environment with state supported healthcare, age care and unemployment insurance. It worked until the virtue signallers took over and uncontrolled immigration skewed the balance of society.
Venezuela, with its huge oil reserves, had it not been long strangled by US-imposed sanctions could have worked as a social democracy, at least until the oil ran out, . A quarter of a century ago, Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chavez, launched a socialist-style “Bolivarian revolution” of popular democracy, economic independence, equitable distribution of revenues, and like Simon Bolvar's idealistic attemts at nation building, as set out in the Jamaica Letter. ended in economic chaos, political corruption and impoverishment of citizens.
By taking the country’s natural resources – its oil and metal ores – out of the hands of a tiny domestic elite that had ruled the country in their own interests, plundering the national wealth and nationalising major industries, from oil and steel to electricity he handed control of the national economy to bureaucrats who, their inflated salaries and limitless expense accounts, had no incentive to do well.
When an upriing ousted Chavez, the hardline communist Maduro stepped into the political void. US paranoia about communism caused the Bush adminstration to tighten the squeeze on Venezuela and as social conditions worsened, Maduro's regime became more authoritarian and more closely involved with the drug cartels flooding the USA will illegal substances.
One thing is certin, whether you love or hate Donny, with his castigation of Europe's weak leaders and recent withdrawals from the United Nations IPCC climate change scam and World Health Organisation, he is successfully stirring things up.
