When President Trump described Keir Starmer’s handover of the economically insignificant but strategically important Chagos Islands deal as an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY,” he was absolutely right. The fact that Trump shocked his audience by delivering his Chagos verdict in his usual blunt, undiplomatic style is to be applauded. The mealy mouthed platitudes of diplomats have deflected from the mendacity of the ruling class for too long
In fact what Starmer's anti - British government has attempted to do over the Chagos Islands is not merely incompetent or naïve. It is an act of treason, defined as, among other things, textbook example of how a ruling class that no longer believes in its own nation ends up surrendering power, sovereignty, territory and leverage – while disguising in the act in the obfucatory language of international law, human rights and moral virtue.
First I should remind readers of what Starmer’s Labour government agreed to.
Under the Chagos deal in its present state, Britain would hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius – a country with close ties to Communist China – while permanently exiling the Chagossian people from their homeland.
In return for taking this important strategic asset off our hands, we British taxpayer would be forced to pay a total £34 billion plus extras to lease back Diego Garcia, one of the most strategically important military bases on earth, which underpins both British and American security in the Indo-Pacific.
Starmer of course told parliament that China and Russia were against his give away, following which the Chinese congratulated Mauritius and started negotiations to buy an island. Trump seems to have been misinformed until now, perhaps thinking that the UK paying for a leaseback was going to secure the base.
As regards Chagos and Greenland, after Starmer hypocritically attacked Trump's move to take over strategically important ice sheet known as Greenland, by insisting the rights of Greenladerd must take priority over all other considerations, only to be asked why he had not given the same consideration to the rights of Chagossians, the UN changed its tune and is backing the original native islanders right to occupy the isiands. The court decision on the Chagossians is due but the judges could be government friendly which would kick off another wave of public protests against the government.
Nobody voted for this. It was not in the Labour Party’s manifesto. There was no public debate. No democratic mandate.
Just a quiet surrender, negotiated by lawyers and diplomats who appear to believe that Britain’s interests and history are something to be apologised for.
In the case of Greenland the Danish government has agreed that they can opt for independence. A way out of this mess would be for a rapid grant of independence and the US to bung a massive amount of wonga to the 60k Inuits in return for defence and mining as a protectorate, whih gives islanders the option to stay put and tolerate American bases, mining operations and oil exploration.
