German Economy In Intensive Care Due To Net Zero Disease

 

A group of German business leaders have written an open letter to Chancellor Friedrich Merz demanding a roll-back of decarbonisation policies before the damage to Germany's economy becomes irreversible. This is a machine translation of the text.

It’s Five Past Twelve – Therefore, Industrial Jobs NOW!

Dear Federal Chancellor,

We are in the worst economic crisis since World War II. Last year alone, at least 100,000 industrial jobs were cut without replacement. The political promises of the previous government about a "green economic miracle" are nothing but empty words. The reality is that never before have so many good jobs been at risk as they are today.

In Germany alone, far more than a million people work in energy-intensive industries, most of them in sectors represented by IGBCE and IG Metall. Therefore, we need an Industry and Economic Agenda 2030 NOW!

We need innovations and investments for good jobs and livable regions. We don’t want subsidies handed out arbitrarily, but reasonable framework conditions so that good jobs and value creation in Germany have a future again.

As true as the complaints about paralyzing bureaucracy and delayed digitization are, it is equally true that German energy policy has become one of the most dangerous risks for business and location.

If the energy transition is an operation on the open heart of our economy, as is sometimes said, then it has so far been thoroughly botched. We have to acknowledge: the patient is at risk of dying on the operating table.

For 35 years, PV and wind have been legally privileged and subsidized. However, they still do not contribute significantly more to security of supply than they did three decades ago. Instead, they are causing grid costs in the triple-digit billion range.

The phase-out of nuclear energy and coal has made Germany dependent on unreliable PV and wind power and expensive gas imports. We are paying the price, with the highest electricity prices in Europe. Never before has our electricity supply been so expensive and insecure.

These high electricity prices are not only socially unjust, but they now also threaten our economy, our prosperity, and our social peace.

We demand:

➢ Electricity prices must become internationally competitive again for the economy, especially for the industry. We need an industrial electricity price of 5 ct/kWh. This industrial electricity price must not be further increased by political CO2 costs or overloaded with other requirements.
➢ Permanent full exemption from transmission charges for energy-intensive production, continuation of relief under §19.2 StromNEV, and free connection to the electricity infrastructure with the required capacity.
➢ No further burdens on the self-supply of electricity in the industry. Industrial electricity networks and CHP self-supply are important economic assets and location factors that must be strengthened in international competition.
➢ Instead of further preliminary efforts by Germany and Europe in climate protection, we expect the establishment of a clear linkage: All relevant countries worldwide must commit to equal efforts.
➢ Protection of the industry from the special burdens of the EU ETS through an effective CBAM that includes exports, excludes circumvention, and expands the product scope according to the actual competitive situation.
➢ Upgrading and modernization of foreign trade protection through a fundamental revision of the existing anti-dumping and anti-subsidy instruments of the EU, especially with regard to China.
➢ Fundamental revision of the German hydrogen strategy with the goal of pragmatic and realistic requirements for technology and objectives. For the realistic case that European and international "green lead markets" cannot be implemented promptly, competitive alternatives to H2 must be enabled.
➢ Immediate adoption of an investment-friendly legislative package to enable CCU/S, including state risk coverage and infrastructure investments without technical or industry-specific selection.
➢ Moratorium on power plant shutdowns: New secured capacity must be available before shutdowns occur.
➢ Stop the haphazard expansion of PV and wind: Approvals only for grid-compatible investments.

Dear Federal Chancellor, the German energy transition threatens to overwhelm Germany as a business location – and with it all our colleagues. Instead of further perseverance slogans and sugarcoating, we finally expect clear statements and signals about which specific measures the federal government will take to correct the misdevelopments in German energy and climate policy and make our energy supply internationally competitive again.

The actions of this federal government will not only abstractly determine the future of Germany as an industrial location. Your actions will concretely determine the future of millions of good industrial jobs. The time for empty words is over. Our colleagues will measure this government by its actions!

Tinkering With The Welfare System Will Do Nothing To Avert The Impending Economic Crisis

 What can be said about Chancellor Reeves latest attempt to destroy what is left of the UK economy, the 'Spring Statement' which was released earlier this week only to be met with scorn and ridicule (and that was just from her colleagues in the Labour Party.)

If they are honest with themselves, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves will be staring in alarm at what their stewardship has done so far to the British economy. We were heading into a financial crisis before the Labour government took office last July for many reasons, prominent among which were decades of lax immigration controls, the legacy of lockdowns and the far-too-generous benefits system.

Ms. Reeves did at least acknowledge the latter by announcing a crackdown on disability benefit payments to people deemed capable of work but, predictably, this went down like the proverbial Lead Zeppelin with the left wing of her party. However, even if it had been eagery embraced by all, the resulting saving would have been patltry compared to the rate at which government spending is exceeding income. This wold be frightening enough in itself but with Starmer's economic illiteracy and Reeves well documented problems with her CV the situation moves rom farcical to absurdity.

The Government has achieved one of its aims though, which is to balance one very large predicted number, ie, that of taxation, with another, spending, in 2030. This kind of economic planning is all guesswork of course. Five years ago nobody could have known how many billions of pounds would be poured into supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia, or that the pursuit of Net Zero would have gone from unrealistic to downright reckless. And nobody would have believed the measures to contain the spread of COVID 19 which were about to be introduced would remain in place like a tourniquet around the throat of industry and commerce for the next three years.

And just as five years ago nobody would have believed any warning that such things should be factored into financial planning now no one really believes the welfare savings, the growth figures, or the thouasands of 'green jobs' to be created by Net Zero' will actually materialise to replace those lost to doctrinaire policies. But the numbers add up on paper and that has always been good enough for politicians. One side of the House dutifully cheers, the other mocks and jeers. And the world goes on the same.

The whole charade is meaningless, not because things are going well, but because they are going very badly indeed.

One thing that has struck me with recent developments is the interviews that have been broadcast with regard to welfare cuts. Many people, it turns out, now see the prime function of the Government as being to provide them with the money they need to maintain a good standard of living. 

Historically we do not have to look back very far into history to find a time times when the idea that the Government should provide for all its citizens needs and expect nothing in return would simply not have been countenanced. Even the socialist dictum of Karl Marx: "From each according to his ability to each according to his needs," puts the 'from' bit first. The fact that we have lost sight of that work ethic not only has a huge impact on our economy, it seems to have had a huge social and psychological impact on our national community as well.

Were we able to sweep aside the follies of the past and rebuild the apparatus of state from scratch would anyone design a welfare system like the ecurrent UK benefits agency? Listening to some of the recent comments and interviews it appears that as a rule of thumb Governments should not seek to fund more that 50% of its citizens needs.

 Immediately of course people will demand to know where the other 50% is coming from? In that not-too-distant past we are looking back at, people had a work ethic, it was understood that the state did not owe anybody a living, apart from those unfortunate individuals with serious disability or chronic illness everybody could contribute something to society and there was such a thing as personal responsibility and our responsibility to others. Accepting that responsibility made people more inventive, resourceful, self reliant and resilient and able to form a more positive view of the future than the rather  dismal. disaffected ones broadcast in recent days.

So this week’s tinkering to meet the fiscal rules in five years’ time means nothing. Almost certainly the crisis will be on us before electoral defeat can save Starmer, Reeves & Co. from the terrifying prospect of having to accept responsibility for their errors.  As Dr Dan Mitchell, prominent US economist and commentator put it this week: “I’ve been assuming that Italy will be the next country to suffer an economic and fiscal crisis, but the UK is heading in the wrong direction so rapidly that I may need to change my prediction.”

So much is obvious to any intelligent observer not blinded by the stream of meaningless drivel emitted by government figures in the past few days.

After all, Reeves is not entirely wrong in blaming her predecessors bu that while blaming them she hasn’t done anything different or brought any new ideas to the role. The last Conservative government pushed up spending and raised taxes. It was just as committed to net zero. It had its own Rental Reform Bill. Indeed at least Reeves is doing some planning reform to boost the construction industry; the Tories dumped Robert Jenrick’s planning reforms after one bad by-election.

The truth is there hasn’t been any real attempt to get to address Britain’s structural problems for 30 years or so. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown benefited from the reforms of Lady Thatcher and John Major. They used this legacy to make things worse: to push up taxes and spending, to begin the energy policy madness, to start importing large numbers of people, and to launch the process of collectivisation and over-regulation.

None of this was reversed under the Tories and Lib Dems. Most of the problems got worse. That’s why productivity growth is now not far off zero and why GDP per head is actually falling.

Someone now needs to offer a proper, serious alternative.

 I came across this post in a comment thread online, the poster who uses a joke name, said it was an article posted on Twitter. It seems rather long for Twitter but I've never used that site so I still associate it with one liners of no more than about 150 characters. Anyway as my title suggests it deals with the aftermath of lockdowns and the great pandemic hoax of 2020 to 2022 and the compliant reaction of the general public to gross violations of their rights and liberties.

We must learn from the experience because you can bet the corrupt, greedy, contol freaky ruling elites having got away with it once will be planning to pull a similar stunt, with even more fascistic measures being introduced, sooner rather than later.

So with a very big hat tip to the original author (if I ever find out who it is I'll buy them a drink for posting such an excellent article,) here it is:

“A lot of people are getting upset having their conduct during covid compared to Germans supporting the rise of Nazism.

Let’s recapitulate.

A fifth of the population was legally classified as unclean. They were barred from most public spaces, including theatres, restaurants, movies, pubs, clubs, swimming pools, sporting events, concerts, conventions, etc.

To access public facilities, people had to carry a digital mark with them so authorities could confirm they weren’t unclean. 

The unclean were fired and barred from most jobs: education, healthcare, courts – all public sector work, most major union jobs and a wide smattering of major private employers. When they were fired, the unclean were denied employment insurance, the reasoning being that they had been fired for cause on account of being unclean.

The unclean were banned from travel on public transport, trains, planes, and chartered boats. They had no legal means of leaving the country. Even if they wanted to, they could not escape the country that obviously hated them so.

It became illegal to socialize with the unclean. They weren’t allowed to attend weddings or funerals, or visit sick relatives or friends in hospital. 

Special laws were made for the unclean subjecting them to house arrest if they were around a person who had recently had a positive PCR test. The unclean had to continue to cover their faces in public when universal masking was dropped.

It became socially acceptable to wish death upon the unclean in social media and in major news organizations. Public health figures and other politicians gave press conferences to shame and insult the unclean. The public developed shared pejorative names for them, and relished in insulting the unclean.

News media regularly ran polls asking if the unclean should be arrested or fined. Public figures openly and proudly spoke about witholding medically necessary healthcare from the unclean – letting them die. The unclean were removed from organ transplant lists, condemned to almost certain death. 

No end date for these measures was ever suggested, no timeline given. To the contrary, this was called the “new normal”.

Criticizing any of these developments made you a social pariah, and likely cost you most of your friendships and family relations, if not your job.

The lesson of the Holocaust – and of covid – isn’t that Germans or Albertans or people of the 21st Century are uniquely gullible or evil. It’s that for most people, “morality” is not a matter of principle, but rather of compliance with what they perceive to be the dominant group ideology – even if that ideology is marked by wanton irrationality or brutal inhumanity.

Indeed, as in certain cults or gangs, the brutality or irrationality of the acts or beliefs required to signal group inclusion further entrench people into the ideology, rather than repel them; a kind of perverse sunk cost fallacy writ large.

So, yes, if you’re a typical person – Albertan, Canadian or otherwise – it is overwhelmingly likely that you would have been a Nazi if you were born in Nazi Germany. If you cheered along lockdowns and mandates, that likelihood approaches certainty.

Is Technology Replacing Mind Workers As Well As Manual Workers

Despite a stream of fake news emerging from government and corporate PR departments about the falling jobless numbers and the numbers of new jobs being created in the economies of the developed world, nobody seems to be getting that feelgood factor we associate with economic growth and prosperity. We have written many times of how the jobs allegedly being created are either in the services sector (waiters, burger flippers, bartenders, office cleaners, amateur cab drivers for Uber, parcel delivery contractors for Amazon and other online retailers and so on. So in reality when we think of not just unemployed, but under employed, the labour market is stagnant.

Think tanks, academics and economists have consistently underestimated the impact that immigration and automation would have on the jobless figures. As data on productivity gains and labor-force participation clearly show, even without taking into account the effects of massaging statistics by, for example, reclassifying those unemployed for over two years as "not economically active," and dumping them off the monthly numbers. The claim that innovation ultimately creates jobs by allowing workers to focus on higher-level problems is a fallacy. Were it to any extent true, we would already be aware of the effect of seeing more of the 2 million plus working age people who have inexplicably dropped out of the labor force making their way back in?

The likely effect of automation on not just low grade, repetitive jobs but skilled workers and the professions has been noted many times, and recently in this BBC report from March 2017. After the Thatcher government waged war on the working class throughout the 1980s and much of the 90s, the Labour government from 1997 to 2010 continued the task, their corporate friendly economic policies making it easy for global businesses to export jobs to low labour cost economies while subsidising high tech solutions in UK factories.

Automation is now coming for service-industry workers like those in the retail and food-service industries where the stronest job growth has been seen in recent years. Earlier this week, we picked up on an analysis that showed new atutomated order and pay kiosks being adopted by McDonald’s will result in the destruction of 2,500 jobs at its US restaurants by the end of 2017. We have heard of no plans to introduce this technology to Europe as yet but you can bet it will not be long in getting here.

Financial news website Bloomberg has published a “quick take” casting doubt on this “official” narrative and highlighting the carnage going on in the service sector right now. It notes how economists have repeatedly misjudged how our capacity to innovate would impact the labor market. For example, 13 years ago, two leading economists published a paper arguing that artificial intelligence would never allow a driverless car to safely execute a right turn because there are too many variables at work. Six years after that, Google and others claimed they had proved it possible to make cars fully autonomous (although the dodgy safety record of these cars in real driving conditions is being whitewashed by government, manufacturers and the media. For reasons that have little to do with sanity and much to do with the control freak nature of the political, business and academic elites, driverless cars are being forced on us, threatening the livelihood of millions of taxi and truck drivers. And now Google, Uber - though their driverless venture like everything else that company does is mired in scandal and controversy, Tesla - where safety issues are rife and the big car manufacturers are all exploring and testing this technology. Ford has said it plans to introduce a fully autonomous car by 2021.

“Throughout much of the developed world, gainful employment is seen as almost a fundamental right. But what if, in the not-too-distant future, there won’t be enough jobs to go around?" one think tank tasked with looking at social consequences of technological advances asked. Some economists think that will happen as robots and artificial intelligence become increasing capable of performing human tasks or human tasks are increasingly dumbed down so insensate machines can perform them?. Past technological upheavals created more jobs than they destroyed because they facilitated rapid economic growth. But some labor experts are concerned it will be different this time: Technology is replacing human brains as well as brawn."

When politicians talk about jobs, they tend to focus on traditional labour intensive industries, such as mining, steel production and auto making, that have always been the hardest hit by low cost imports and technological progress. Lately, though, the loss of manufacturing jobs in developed economies is barely significant (mainly because all the jobs have been automated already) compared to the losses happening and imminent in the services sector.

One of the worst his sectors is retail, consumer spending has shown little sign of recovering since the crash of 2008 while online shopping via internet sites. Retail outlets including Department Stores, supermarkets and small, specialist shops which employ far more people than many of the traditional manufacturing industries, are shedding workers at an accelerating rate. In another mainstay of the job market, agriculture, automation threatens to reduce manual worker numbers by over fifty per cent in the next few decades. Average employment in the first four months of 2017 was down in all advanced economies in the world against the same period a year earlier.

If robots are truly taking over, then why haven’t we seen the anticipated rise in productivity that one would expect from increased in efficiency?

While it's true that previously innovation has led to wealth creation, it would be foolish to believe this trend will continue unabated, infinite economic growth is not possible, at some point - and we may have are ma passed that point - people begin to feel insecure. As reported widely in the past, most of the new jobs that have been created are in low-wage, moderate-skill positions that cannot move the productivity needle much, causing the creation of new full-time jobs to stagnate.

McDonalds Is Replacing 2,500 Minimum Wage Workers With Digital Cashiers

While the latest employment figures in the USA appeared to signal a pick up in the jobs market, with unemployment benefit claim falling, only people unaware if the statistical prestadigitation used to massage the figures (people unemployed for two years or more are not counted as unemployed - they are, to borrow a term from the old Soviet Union, 'unpersoned.') oblivious to the carnage among the broader restaurant and fast-food sector or what financial news website Zero Hedge calls the waiters and bartenders economy.

McDonald's are doing particularly well, after several years of looking like the sick man of the stock market, the fast food chani's latest innovation has sent share prices soaring. In a report published this week, analyst Andrew Charles, the calculates the jump in sales as a result of Ronald McDonald's new Experience of the Future strategy of replacing minimum wage workers with digital ordering and payment kiosks (shown above). As a result of legally mandated increases in minimum wages, the biggest employer of minimum wage workers will replace cashiers in at least 2,500 restaurants by the end of 2017 and another 3,000 over 2018. Cowen also mentioned plans for the fast food chain to roll out mobile ordering across 14,000 U.S. locations by the end of 2017.
Here is a snapshot of the figures that Cowen, used to come up with the cost-savings as McDonalds increasingly lays off more and more minimum wage workers and replaces them with "Big Mac ATMs" It shows the full costing and identifies the increases in minimum wage mandated under the Obama administration as the reason why the Ronald McDonald's little munchkins, the client-facing minimum wage workers are now obsolete. And you can bet in a highly competitive business other fast food chains will be quick to follow suit.

McD is cultivating a digital platform through mobile ordering and Experience of the Future (EOTF), an in-store technological overhaul most conspicuous through kiosk ordering and table delivery. Our analysis suggests efforts should bear fruit in 2018 with a combined 130 bps contribution to U.S. comps. We believe mobile ordering better supplements the drive-thru business where 70%+ of U.S. sales are transacted. In our view, MCD's differentiation lies in the operational enhancements of mobile ordering that includes curbside pick-up of orders in order to not disrupt the drive-thru.

We are most excited for mobile ordering, Experience of the Future and the launch of fresh beef to help drive U.S. same store sales in 2018. We provide analysis for the latter three, which cumulatively we expect to contribute roughly 150 bps to U.S. same store sales in 2018, respectively. This gives us confidence to raise our 2018 U.S. same store sales forecast from 2% to 3%, in excess of Consensus Metrix’s 2.5%.

Experience of the Future Features Lower ROI Than Mobile Order, But Offers Greater Potential Longer Term

We are constructive on the use of guest facing technology for the restaurant industry. MCD’s longer-term U.S. story revolves around Experience of the Future (EOTF), a holistic operational and technological overhaul to the store base. MCD’s March 2017 investor meeting centered around the initiative with interactive displays. Perhaps the most conspicuous piece of Experience of the Future lies in digital kiosk ordering, which have seen success in International Lead Markets. Additionally, food ordered via the kiosk is delivered to the customer’s table. We believe EOTF better enhances the instore experience, which represents roughly 30% of domestic sales compared to mobile ordering, which allows customers to avoid leaving their cars.

Our ROI math suggests EOTF leads to a 9% cash/cash return in Year 1 in the 55% of domestic stores that do not require a store remodel, and 5% in the 45% of stores that require a remodel, which is a predecessor to implementing EOTF. Our math is premised on total costs of $150,000 for the Experience of the Future enhancement, and $700,000 of all-in costs when including EOTF as well as a store remodel. MCD has offered to pay 55% of the cost for Experience of the Future, in excess of the 40% the company contributed to the store remodel initiative beginning in 2010, for restaurants that commit to the program by the end of 2017.

McDonald’s targets a high-teens return on incrementally invested capital (ROIIC, or McSpeak for evaluating ROI), improving to the mid-20% range beginning in 2019. We believe EOTF’s ROI is captured over time as the sales lift does not dissolve as in the case of a traditional restaurant remodel. Rather, the lift should sustain as we expect consumers to increasingly embrace technological change. This is evidenced across concepts, such as Panera’s experience with 2.0, as well as McDonald’s own experience in Canada, where kiosks saw 12-13% sales mix in Year 1 and 27% in Year 2. We also note kiosk ordering will also likely lead to labor savings over time which should help boost ROIIC, but is unlikely for the foreseeable future.

In 2017, MCD expects to end the year with EOTF offered in 2,500 domestic locations from 500 at 2016-end. MCD targets the majority of domestic locations to feature EOTF by 2020, but has not given intermediary targets. The amount of stores adding EOTF depends on franchise reception to the initiative but we see positive indicators given our checks as well as the company’s disclosure that 90% of franchisees approved of the initiative after taking the same interactive tour that was given at the March 2017 investor day.

We estimate 3,000 locations to add EOTF in 2018, which should lead to a 70 bps contribution to U.S. same store sales assuming an even cadence of restaurants adding the initiative over the course of the year. Further we assume the mix of stores adding EOTF in 2018 reflects the mix of overall stores needed to add EOTF, or 55% of stores that already have a remodel while 45% require a store remodel. McDonald’s has previously announced plans to remodel 650 restaurants in 2017, which we expect will also add EOTF.

Or to put it more succinctly, the great achievement of the Social Justice Warriors and the Community Organiser In Chief in the closing stages of the Obama presidency has succeeded not in doubling the wages of low paid workers but in putting them out of jobs.

Throughout the US presidential election campaign one of the main policy pledges of Democratic nomination contender Bernie Sanders was that the minimum wage would be lifted to $15 per hour. This current move by McDonalds is a direct reaction to minimum wage laws in some states where liberals dominate the state legislature. The jobs being lost to technology are simply not worth $15 an hour, so well done Bernie Sanders & Co. as predicted in January 2016 thanks to your economic illiteracy many thousands of people who used to earn minimum wage will have no job at all.

MCDONALDS is using the excuse of 15 dollar an hour minimum wage, to eliminate PEOPLE from their workforce, however to maintain profits they need people with money who can afford to buy their toxic-shiteburgers. The endless pursuit of the lowest possible labor coast means 'things' and 'services' cost less BUT what do you do when nobody below the to ten per cent is still working (strike that, I'm still in the top ten per cent and I haven't worked for twenty years,) How will the global economy keep growing when the majority of people have no money to buy anything but the most basic essentials?

And I promise you the top ten per cent are not going to be buying many burgers from McDonalds. The new serfdom is going to be worse than the 12th century version and the path there is going to see a bigger die off than the Black Death. What was it Ted Turner desired? A reduction in global population to six hundred million?

They're not just killing off minimum wage jobs - they're slashing all they can at levels all the way up to the top. Anything to make better numbers.

As thousands of stores close across Europe and the USA close, partly due to online competition and partly to people having no money for anything but essentials, the corporations think they can solve the problem by replacing people with robits and Artificial Intelligence?

AI is a pipe dream. Show me the program that writes its own classes and functions, fixes its own bugs, and I'll start to believe. Many prominent computer science programs in the country have already changed their course names from "AI" to "Machine Learning" for just this reason - as complex as algorithmic design has gotten, machine learning is still just a series of complex decision trees. It's only natural that they become more accurate as they're fed more data and refined. Incredible tools for good and for evil, but hardly conscious.

There's a bizzare religiosity to transhumanism and AGI has become its de-facto "Deus ex Machina." As I've yet to find a "God" (in the religious sense) that actually exists, I'm left to assume that transhumans will follow in the footsteps of their Trinity-based counterparts and use an entrenched (technological) Priest class to sell their "God" to the largely tech - illiterate masses.

I mean, your average schmuck already believes their Amazon Alexa is some kind of AI. When you try to explain to them that it's simply a device for retrieval, manipulation, and presentation of stored data (like all computers), their eyes glaze over as their preference for a world of "magic" watched over by machines of loving grace kicks in.

As for the zero cost promise of automation, if molecular printing and near-free energy show up anytime soon, this is a possibility; but certain industries are already highly automated with no such overwhelming price/supply effect. Look at the way food production is going, almost entirely automated, getting cheaper all the time yet still suffering from the ravages of inflation, to say nothing of the quality!

We have little to fear from automation and Artifical Intelligence. Except for the minimum wage workers of course.

At least 40 injured, many arrests in Paris anti-labor reform protests

At least 40 people, including 29 police officers, were injured when the latest protest against France’s highly unpopular labor law reforms turned violent as demonstrators clashed with police in Paris today. Police arrested many prostors and used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

Paris police chief Michel Cadot said he estimated "maybe more than 50,000 demonstrators" joined the protest in the city.

Clashes took place near the capital’s Port Royal railway station. Dozens of people, mostly wearing hoods, threw stones and firecrackers at the security forces, who responded with force to disperse the demonstration.

The unpopular reform, initiated by Labor Minister Myriam El Khomri, forces employers to pay only 10 percent of overtime bonus, instead of the current 25 percent. The bill technically maintains the 35-hour working week, but says that in case of “exceptional circumstances,” employees can be asked to work up to 60 hours a week.

The seven main French unions were hoping to attract a million workers to the protest against French President Francois Hollande's controversial labor reforms, despite falling support for the mass protests that have disrupted France since early March. A series of strikes and mass demonstrations have brought chaos to the rail network, the Paris Metro, airports, and road transport, because of industrial action and blockades at fuel refineries and depots.

The action is aimed at overturning reforms to the highly codified French workers' rights laws — known as the Code du travail — in order to give employers more flexibility. The labor reforms were largely directed at making companies take on more workers on permanent contracts, rather than temporary ones including zero hours contracts, to bring down the unemployment rate from ten percent. The trend to contract working and part time work was set in train by restrictive rules imposed by the EU which, at the same time as they imposed unacceptable restrictions on European employers, made it easier to 'offshore' jobs or to subcontact work through agencies to foreign firms which under EU law, are answerable to the law of the country in which the form is registered. Hollande's proposals would give employers more scope to lay-off workers and cut costs and allow some employees to work far longer than the current 35-hour week.

The reforms were pushed through by Hollande, who invoking a little used piece of the constitution — Article 49.3 — bypassed the Senate — which is dominated by Republicans, who are against the reforms.

Opinion polls show that, while four out of five, disagree with the labor reforms, there is dwindling support for the industrial action — particularly with the eyes of the world on France, which is hosting the current Euro 2016 football tournament. France 24 reported that only 4.5 percent of employees at state-owned national rail company SNCF were on strike Monday (June 13) — which is significantly smaller than previously.

1. If Britain stays in the EU, within the next 6 years we will convert to the Euro. The Pound is and always will be the stronger currency and is a reserve currency, why would we change this?

2. Britain has one of the most professional and strongest armed forces in the world, why would we want to rely a European army?

3. Britain and Germany are the only two countries in Europe that bring in a positive balance of money, of course Europe don't want Britain to leave.

4. 1 in 5 European Union officials get paid twice as much as the British prime minister.

5. People think we control our borders, we don't, we just security check them as we are an Island. If you have a European passport you are eligible to come in to the UK and why wouldn't you if you could have a better life there than in your own country? Not a problem but Britain is an island and can only hold so many people.

6. Thousands of laws a year are implemented in the UK every year from the EU, most of which are irrelevant to the British people but the British Parliament have NO say whatsoever!

7. For every pound the EU spend on certain projects, we have to pay them double!

8. Free trade deals - free? I was under the impression we paid £50 million pounds a day to stay in! That's nearly £13 billion pounds a year!!!! Surely this could go towards our NHS, or is this the next step, European healthcare?

9. People wondering why we joined in the first place? - it was originally called the European Common Market when we joined in 73 and was all about trade, over the years it has become political and is the reason why the British people are calling for a vote - they don't want to lose their identity and want to have their own say!

10. Trade deals - the EU has restricted us from trading with China, India etc. If Britain leaves, Britain will have plenty of opportunities to agree trade deals all over the world including Europe. Look at the money Britain spends! 5th strongest economical country in the world!

11. Leaving the EU will give more jobs, higher pensions, higher wages, it's own democracy and hopefully save the world's best health service!

12. Staying in the EU means you will have no extra charges on your phone bill whilst on holiday! Who cares? Half the country can't afford a holiday as most of the money is tied up in a union where the country have to pay £13 billion a year and have nothing to show for it.And let's not forget the TTIP our brilliant NHS The yanks secretly want to take off us!!!.
