EU’s Unsustainable €1bn-a-day trade gap with China

The EU’s trade deficit with China has been growing for years and, thanks to the efforts of the prosperity and trade hating left and the save-the-planet-by-destroying-civilisation mob recently reached a record €1bn (£0.8bn) a day, according to EU official trade data. This has fuelledconcerns over the future of Europe’s “industrial backbone”.

The gap between the EU’s imports from China and exports to China amounted to €31.9bn in April, according to the latest import and export data from the EU statistics body Eurostat.

The data comes as European leaders prepare to meet on Thursday to discuss measures to address the growing trade imbalance, which includes the increased presence of Chinese electric cars – exported by a heavily subsidised industry – in Europe and the use of everyday components in factories across the bloc.

On receiving the news Javi López, European Parliament vice-president, said the European Union's trade imbalance with China "cannot continue", with the bloc running a €1bn-a-day trade deficit.

After travelling to China this week seeking to end the eight-year stalemate in negotiations with The Peoples Republic to find a way of resolving this trade imbalance, López (S&D, Spain) called for the EU to "relaunch" its relationship with Beijing. He believes dialogue, rather than defensive tariffs and restrictions, is key to rebuilding ties with the Chinese government

The Spanish MEP says solutions based on "dialogue and cooperation", rather than by triggering a trade war between the EU and China should be found, and he expects the European Commission's efforts to begin easing tensions will soon result in progress.

Senor Lopez is sadly out of touch with reality if he thinks the economically devastating trade imbalance between EU and China can be resolved through diplomatic negotiations. That is just not how the Chinese Communist Party do things.

The EU’s trade deficit with China is exploding year in year due to Europe - wide (including UK which is no longer and EU member but plays by the same rules,), and the EU’s heads of state and government, having exported whole industries, and the jobs that go with them, to China, India and the global south while simultaneously crippling what industries remain in the west with high taxes and exorbitant fuel costs in pursuit of  virtue signalling policies like 'Net Zero' are beginning to panic. China and other developing economies pay lip service to net zero and other sacred cows but happily go on increasing CO2 emisssions and damaging the environment regardless.

China’s exports to the EU have risen by 16 per cent in the 2024 - 25 financial year (  Financial Times ) and look set to rise by a similar amount in the current year. The deficit between what we buy from China and what we sell to them now amounts to €1 billion per day. This is not something any European economy can sustain over a prolonged period,  particularly will all major European economies being burdened with debt as a result of overly generous welfare systems. A trade war with China is looking increasingly inevitable.

The leader of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, social democrat Manfred Weber, is uncharacteristically blunt in his assessment.  Weber told the German newspaper Bild

‘Either we defend ourselves, or China will destroy much of our industry.’

Weber is right on target there, China's heavily subsidies automobile manufacturers are already causing Europe's main car makers to reduce production and cut jobs, as our recent report on Vlokswagen demonstrated.

The European market is now being flooded with cheap Chinese goods after China’s trade war with Trump and the United States put a stop to much of its exports there. A thorn in the EU’s side is China’s extensive state support for various industries. This gives Chinese companies an unfair advantage as EU and World Trade Organisation approaches to subsidies are governed by the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM Agreement), which restricts the use of subsidies and allows member countries to impose countervailing measures if they can demonstrate injury to a domestic industry from subsidised imports.

The EU is accustomed to treading softly in relation to China, and President Antonio Costa did not even mention China in responding to Lopez in the trade deficit issue.

Beijing is aware of European dissatisfaction with the situation and has launched a campaign to prevent the EU from adopting new measures to slow Chinese imports. Earlier this month China cancelled two important diplomatic meetings with the EU at short notice, according to the FT.

Beijing is said to be particularly dissatisfied with the EU’s new industrial legislation and the ‘Buy European’ decision. EU diplomats, for their part, are clear that ‘macroeconomic imbalances’ is synonymous with China.

‘Of course it is China we are talking about,’ say two senior diplomats.

They believe that the EU must sharpen its trade policy instruments to meet what they regard as unfair competition from China, but reject the suggestion that this amounts to provoking conflict.

‘This is a reaction. It was they who started it,’ says one of the diplomats.

If the EU prioritises internal compromise, it will end up suffering defeat at the hands of China, which is paying close attention and knows where to apply pressure.

Volkswagen Crisis - German Car Giant To Drastically Reduce Model Range As Germany's Industrial Decline Continues

Volkswagen (VW), not long ago the word's biggest automobile maker, but now second to Toyota, in danger of being overhauled by Hyundai and with the spectre of China's Geeley and BYD looming ever larger in the rear view mirror, having failed to agree with unions  a plan to cut 100,000 jobs, are now looking for ways to axe half of its two model range as part of a cost-cutting drive.

The German car giant, which has been battling a downturn in sales performance exacerbated by high energy and labour costs, supply line problems and punitive taxes imposed by the German government and the EU,, announced the measure after the board's last ditch effort failed to agree on job cuts of up to 100,000 roles in a crunch meeting with union representatives.

VW said that halving the number of models it sold would allow it to focus on its best-selling and most profitable vehicles.

It did not say which brands would be affected or when the changes would be made, but the move raises the prospect of dozens of popular models being scrapped.

Volkswagen and other EU car manufacturers are being hammered by competition from China where there are no net zero obstacles and exports are heavily subsidised. The EU's protectionist policy is supposed to cushion intra-EU car manufacture from this only it can't due to the risks of a trade war. So what is the point of the EU?

Some may claim this Volkswagen crisis is capitalism in action, and while that may be true to some extent in Germany, we must always be aware that the western European nations (and a lesser extent in the USA,) due to state and EU interventions and policies like the enforced switch to EVs, net zero and high taxation to support extravagant welfare systems, market forces are distorted. The price of new cars have become prohibitively expensive mainly due to (in the UK anyway) the anti car Government piling more and more taxes on top plus the ludicrously expensive road fund tax (which doesn't go on roads) on new cars.I think it is only buyers of Company cars and the outrageous disability car purchase scam who can afford to buy a new car.

I can afford to buy a new car, but why would I when it loses 30% of its value once I take delivery? I’d rather pay 30% less. Most people don’t buy cars anyway, they pay a monthly fee to use them, like mobile phones, music, Sky, Netflix and the like

Short of new sactions across the board on Chinese cars, VW are going to have to eliminate most of their 'cheaper' cars, and hope that the expensive ones maintain some market share. I guess this is essentially what this new plan is.

Thank you Net Zero. The European car industry is finished, In 5 years time the Chinese will own VW, Stellantis, BMW, Renault and ... I can't think of any other European owned company except Mercedes but they will survive by retreating to the luxury market.

Has Putin Has Pushed Europe Into Economic Depression, Hyperrinflation and Currency Collapse?
Though it was entirely predictable and indeed had been expected for some time, the news over the weekend that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline which feeds gas from Russia to northern Europe via The Baltic route had been shut down completely by The Kremlin in retaliation for the continued financial and military support given by NATO and EU member states to Ukraine in the conflict with Russia. The European Commission, governing body of the EU, immediately put the community on something close to a war footing, ...

Jingoistic Western Triumphalism Will Not End The War In Ukraine Or Cripple Putin, But It Is Crippling Western Nations
As the war in Ukraine grinds on and Russia steps up its economic war against the west and in particular The European Union, claims made recently by the idiotically 'woke' leaders of Europe's main economic and military powers that the West has a once-in-a–generation chance to severely weaken Russia’s capabilities, both militarily and geopolitically, look increasingly hollow. Putin's critics have cited 'Western unity' as one of the main reasons why Russia will be economically destroyed and politically humiliated when the Ukraine's military finally claim victory.

European Union Is Again Close To A Meltdown As Eurozone Economy Collapses
Once more we return to the political instability and economic fragility of the European Union as the conflict in Ukraine combined with loonytoons Climate Change mitigation policies, the failure of 'sustainables' to meet ever increasing demand for electricity, fod shortages and rampant price inflation put economic and social pressure on governments of member states ...

Debunked: The Great Renewable Green Delusion
The war in Ukraine has not caused the global energy crisis of early 2022 byt merely exacerbated it. Currently the nations currently in conflict with Russia over its incursion into Ukraine are those which are most dependent for their energy needs on Russian oil and gas. And now their loonytoons 'net zero' green energy policies have failed they are biting the hand that feeds them.

Putin, Macron To Hold Urgent Talks To Halt Military Escalation In Ukraine
Even though the leaders of Ukraine itself are talking down the threat of war with Russia over the breakaway region of Donbas, America and Britain are still beating the war drums and demonising Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Russia insists they have no plans to invade Ukraine and one western leader at least, France's Emmanuel Macron, seems to be listening to messages coming out of the East European trouble spot...

British Government Laundered Fake U.S. 'Intelligence' On Ukraine
The British government on Saturday accused Russia of organizing a plot to install a pro-Moscow government in Ukraine, as the Kremlin masses troops near the Ukrainian border. The U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office gave relatively little information about the intelligence unveiled Saturday other than to say that the Russian government was considering trying to make a Russia-leaning former member of Ukraine’s parliament, Yevhen Murayev, the country’s new leader. Do We Have A Winter Of Civil Disobedience Ahead?
As many people in Britain slap on the apres sun gloop in the wake of what passes for a heatwave in these cool cloudy climes, our inept politicians caught with their pants down by unusual weather as usual have heard that that winter is coming and are making plans for a coldwave. We are in the grip of an energy crisis at the height of summer. Last week, it was reported that the UK government is laying down plans for a “reasonable worst-case scenario” including blackouts for industry and even households. And this is as energy prices spiral out of control to new records every day.

Official Advice - Prepare For Blackouts This Winter

The UK government is putting plans together for days of organised blackouts this winter, in what they call a "reasonable worst-case scenario" for energy shortages, according to reports in manstream media. Naturally they are blaming this on the embargo on importing gas from Russia but in reality Britain has never imported any more than a small amout of its gas from Russia. The real reason politicians and energy company CEOs are panicking is entirely due to their obession with obtaining all our energy from intermittent sources like wind and sunshine ...

Is Russia Selling Its Oil To The World Through An Obscure Egyptian Port?
As this blog predicted when NATO and EU member states shot themselves in the foot by reacting to Russia's invasion of Ukraine with sanctions that prevented Russia from selling oil, gas and vital raw materials to the countries that needed them most, the NATO and EU member states, the Russians have had no problems finding alternative customers for their gas and oil and no problem getting oil into the world's commodity markets through the back door.

"Our Country Is Facing The Biggest Crisis The Crisis We Ever Had": German Employers' Association Warns Over Russian Gas Cut
With the Nord Stream 1 pipeline closed for maintenance, with the possibility that President Putin will not allow it to reopen at the end of the scheduled 10 days downtime in retaliation for the EU's continued support or Ukraine in their conflict with Russia, Germany is facing an unprecedented crisis that could erase the prosperity Germans have grown accustomed to, warned Rainer Dulger, head of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations.

Europe's biggest economy would suffer a 6.5pc contraction if Russian energy is suspended, experts warn
Even though the sanctions already imposed on Russia in respondse to the invasion of Ukraine are hitting the nations that imposed then harder that their intended target, the EU is preparing to committ economic suicide in an orgy of virtue signalling ...

We The Good Guys Versus They The Bad Guys Reporting Does Not Make Sense For The Ukraine Crisis
Mainstream media reporting of the conflict in Ukraine has disappointed. Perhaps I was naive to suppose that lessons might have been learned from the hits their print sales and online traffic rates took as a result of their handling the COVID pandemic But instead of focusing on the most obviously newsworthy aspect of the build up to and escalation of the war, Russia’s view of NATO expansion into Ukraine and even further to Georgia and Kazakhstan, news reports have simply demonised Russia and portrayed Ukraine as the good guys.

Boris and Biden Can't Blame Ukraine War For Energy Crisis
With typical arrogance and condescension towards the people who elected them Boris Johnson, Joe Biden and their respectiive presstitutes are trying to spin the energy crisis Europe and North America are currently facing as somehow being linked to the conflict in Ukraine and therfore blame is being attactched to Russia and Vladimir Putin. Do they really think we are stupid enough to believe such unmitigated bollocks? ...

Even If The War In Ukraine Ends, Sanctions Will Stay - So How Bad Will The Food Crisis Get?
Western leaders, desperate to show their own countries they were taking a firm stance on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, were quick to impose economic sanctions ... so quick in fact that they acted before they had though things through. While freezing Russia out of the global finance system they have exacerbated the wests energy crisis, while Russia's retaliatory ban on raw materials (fertiliser) exports will create extra problems on top of those we already had ...

Europe's Depleted Gas Storage Might Not Get Refilled Ahead Of Next Winter
While mainstream news reporting of the conflict in Ukraine continues to pump out a torrent of anti - Russia, pro - war propaganda the catastropic effects of this war that could so easily have been avoided are not mentioned. Well why would warmongering governments admit they have inflicted an energy crisis, food shortages and soaring living costs on their people for no good reason ...

As Western News Channels Clam Up On Israel - Iran War, The Situation Is Becoming More Dangerous

As we follow news of the Iran / Israel war on television, internet and print publications, some of the statements coming from Israel's defence ministry are reminiscent of the propaganda broadscasts of Iraqi foeign affairs secretary Comical Ali, (Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf,) in the second gulf war around the turn of the century. The current crop of spinners and liars make his claims that Saddam Hussein's forces were routing the American and NATO alliance look like honest and diligent journalism. Hopefully some readers are old enough to remember him.

In spite of the propaganda, Israel is not crushing Iran, the Iranians were never going to be a pushover. Israel's iron dome air defence system is failing or has been outclassed by suerior weaponary because missiles fired from Iran, but probably made in China, are hitting targets in Israel

This is not to say that Iran is winning of course, but reports that the regime of the Ayatollah's is on the brink of collapse, the supreme leaders is on his deathbed and blah blah are so reminiscent of what we have been reading and hearnf from mainstream media about the state of Russia's government throughout the course of the war in Ukraine. And yet the Russian war machone grinds on and repeatedly exposes Kiev's lie that Ukraine can seal victory if only the west will cough up mone money, more and better weapons and more boots on the ground, (let's not pretend there are no NATO troops providing tech support in the war zone, they've been there almost from the start.

Another question on the middle east conflict I haven't seen raised elsewhere is what happened to Hezbollah? Were the best armed and most organised terrorist group completely wiped out and all of their rockets destroyed? that seems odd to me as even Hamas was able to launch one of their homemade rockets not too long ago but the larger, more professional Islamist paramilitary force did not act. Could it be that they are waiting for the complete collapse of the so-called Iron Dome before they pull those rockets out of where ever they have hidden them and unleash them on Israeli civilians.

The problem for Israel, as with the ukraine/uk/eu/us axis of terrorism, is that they cannot lose face by admitting Iran is matching them because the whole national identity is built upon "we the are the best and strongest and most humane ever, the chosen of God!", and one single crack shatters their image, so they have to double, triple, quadruple down on the lies.

The israelis could of course overthrow their government and try to seek peace and cooperation, but that would destroy the 'chosen of God' myth and show them to be just another bunch of war crazy middle eastern zealots..

Any military initiative by America will not be about nuclear war, but oil. As the case for 'sustinable' sources of energy (wind and solar,) collapses, we reutrn to a situation of who controls the oil controls the world.

America,s plan has been long in the making and is wel on track although a few years behind schedule. The  Dubya Bush era plan to destroy 5 countries in 5 years was about controlling the oil, as has been done notably in Syria and Iraq. America will try to use it's ME bases and muscle to control the Persian Gulf. There will be a 20% cost to pass through which will solve a lot of problems for America' faltering economy. The usefulness of the petro-dollar is fading and fee for passage and guarantee of security is the American plan.

The elephant in the room is China, now the manufacturing hub of the world and according to experts a match for the USA militarily. And coincidentally a close ally of Iran. Higher oil prices will impact China. Though the burgeoning Chinese economy sources most of its oil from  Russia and Iran with Iranian supples possibly disrupted by war damage and Russia free to resume supplies to Europe, America may see it's control of oil through the Gulf as their most effective weapon in a trade war against China.

However China has shown it is not in a mood to be controlled by America. Ther recently positioned two aircraft carriers off Guam the coast of Guam. And Guam has to be critical to America's military plan.

Will the Chinese dragon wake up and breathe fire? Maybe.

Trump's Tariffs On EU Trade Are More Political Than Protectionist

Last Friday, (May 23) US President Donald Trump slapped a staggering 50% tariff on European Union goods, which will take effect from 1 June 2025, unless the EU agrees to significant changes in its trade policies. The escalation has kicked off  and a diplomatic crisis destabilised financial markets.

Trump’s proposal aims to reduce the EU’s huge trade surplus with the /USA ($550 billion in annual exports to the US, compared to $351 billion in US exports to the EU in 2022) which as has long been acknowledged, is mostly due to unfair trade barriers and protectionist policies operated by the EU to restrict inward trade to the bloc. Trump's outrageous tariff, given his style of politics, is probably a stunt which aims to force Brussels to renegotiate its terms for trading with the USA.

The announcement is the latest in a list of aggressive trade rhetoric, where tariffs are proposed but sometimes softened when the target nation agrees to negotiate. The EU, the world’s largest trading bloc and an important ally of the US, now faces a reckoning over it's trade policies.

Typically EU leaders responded in their usual arrogant manner, announcing that Brussels is preparing for retaliation. Maros Sefcovic, the EU’s Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, emphasised a commitment to a “deal based on respect, not threats”. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin called the tariff threat “enormously disappointing”, arguing it undermines a vital trading relationship and global economic stability. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned that such tariffs would harm both economies and urging the EU to preserve market access.

An EU press release states the bloc has already drafted $108 billion in retaliatory tariffs, targeting US goods like agricultural products and machinery. The EU counter measures include tariffs on US steel and aluminium and levies on American whiskey and motorcycles whuch show the usual bureaucratic ineptitude, while the EU, due to its 'net zero' obsession has to import metals thus EU based buyers will just have to swalllow the cost of tariffs, US exports of whisky and motor cycles are insignificant.

Trump is right when he says the EU has been engaging in unfair trade practices for decades. Since the turn of the century the European Unionhas suppressed domestic demand through policies of austerity, fiscal restraint and wage compression as well as running import policies that make selling goods to member nations very difficult for US companies. This deflationary tactic along with the euro’s inherent deflationary bias) has been a deliberate strategy aimed at bolstering price competitiveness on the global stage, while at the same time reducing imports.

In effect, the EU has embraced a hyper-mercantilist, export-driven growth model, prioritising trade surpluses over internal economic development.Rather than get into a trade war with the Trump2 administration EU economists need to ask themselves what exactly is so very wrong about an “export led economic model” ?

If you are able to successfully export your goods, it is because you are producing either better goods than other countries and/or producing them at lower prices. These are precisely what Lord Young used to call “the problems of success”.

There is of course nothing wrong with an export led economic model, provided that there is also a willingness to embrace free trade as the sine qua non for making such a model sustainable in the long run.

The problem with the EU is that it is a customs union and doesn’t believe in free trade, even frankly within its own borders (for example there has never been an effective single market in services, with all manner of national protections and barriers still in place). If you take a look at the tariff structures of the EU you’ll find that they tend to benefit the economic bases of the four biggest players; Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands.

It also doesn’t believe in entrepreneurship or free market capitalism preferring instead corporatism and excessive, stifling regulations to sustain that. The consequence of this being aside from agricultural, basic commodity and legacy goods, the EU is getting left behind the rest of the world in terms of developing new technologies (EV’s, batteries, silicon, gene editing, AI, communications, electronics etc etc) and its becoming increasing hard to maintain any competitive advantage in the areas where it does export.

Starmer's Shabby Sellout To EU Is A Betrayal Of Britain

The UK / EU 'reset' summit, talked up by Prime Minister Smarmer as the gateway to a huge boost for British business is now revealed to have neen nothing but a sellout, a wide-ranging surrender to Brussels aimed at handing control of UK policy back to the EU bureaucrats across key areas such as defense, energy, migration, law enforcement, and youth mobility, with a view to eventually rejoining the corrupt, authoritarian bloc — a deal that critics argue is a flagrant rowback on Brexit and a first step to taking us back into the Euronazi 4th Reich..

Announced on Monday, the so-called Common Understanding outlines both sides’ intention to build on existing post-Brexit frameworks, including the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement.

While the agreement does not constitute a new treaty to replace Boris Johnson's deal, it signals a shift toward closer integration in several sectors that bring the U.K. back into line with EU rules and institutions, undermining national sovereignty.

The agreement restates reciprocal access to fishing waters until June 2038 and extends bilateral cooperation on energy. It also launches a new Security and Defense Partnership covering topics such as increased support for Ukraine, cyber defense, defence spending, and space security. Dialogue is also planned in areas like maritime terrorism and international disaster response.

Access to fishing grounds has been a bone of contention since the 2016 Brexit vote and is seen as a major sellout and a betrayal of the UK fishing industry by Starmer.  Ahead of the news breaking, rumors had been swirling in Westminster that fishing rights were on the table, leading Reform UK leader Nigel Farage to warn, “If true, that will be the end of the fishing industry.”

Fishing industry spokesmen said industry members are outraged by Starmer's stab in the back and are considering action.

Other recent actions by Starmer and his government suggest they are not only intent on selling us out to the EU but on making us a client state of China.

The new mobility framework proposed in the deal is for young people, allowing limited-duration travel between the U.K. and EU for work, study, volunteering, and other cultural purposes. In parallel, the U.K. and EU will begin discussions about associating the UK with the EU’s Erasmus+ program, including negotiation over financial terms. These discussions are framed as promoting “people-to-people” ties, especially among younger generations. Put bluntly this makes lies of all Starmer's promises to curb inflation as it opens the doors to millions of unskiled, poorly educated job seekers from Europe's pooer nations as well as those who have entered Europe illegally from third world nations.

TDS Sufferers Can't See Trump's Tariffs May Seem Crazy But There's Method In His Madness

Amusing to see all the TDS victims in mainstream media, both paid journalists and ordinary punters in the comment threads, seem to have forgotten that China, aided and abetted (unintentionally perhaps, we should give them the benefit of the doubt,) by western governments, have been waging economic war for decades.

Well informed economics writers were pointing out during the 2008 / 9 financial crisis that if China chose, it could wreck the global economy by using its vast holdings of US debt (bonds,) to collapse the dollar.

Despite this being well known, western nations have continues to export jobs to the far east, run up more debt and encourage China and other 3rd world nations to dump more and more cheap, shoddy, heavily subsidies consumer goods in western markets.

Trump's tariffs may be a crude and ill considered approach to solving this problem, but no matter how much irrational hatred some people harbour towards him, at least admit his administration has acknowledged that the problem exists and needs to be dealt with.

Throwing markets into disarray with tariffs one minute and then removing them the next may not seem the ideal recipe for boosting business confidence in both the short and long term. Not only do companies need reasonable assurances that their investments will be profitable, but they also need workers that can fulfill business needs. Trump's policies may seem chaotic but as a businessman he is playing a familiar business game.

Manufacturing is extremely complex these days. Gone are the days of plugging a worker onto an assembly line with only a few hours of training. The machinery is complex. It takes real knowledge and skill now to work in most advanced manufacturing facilities, and the United States’ labor force does not have those skills right now. What this means is that any factories that are re-shored to the United States are not going to be as productive as their off-shore equivalent. Not only with these factories be less productive, but they will also cost more to run as labor costs are significantly higher.

The only way to counter these negative incentives is through reasonable, well-articulated, and consistent tariff and domestic policy, which will include, in some form, tax incentives and/or funds for building factories and training workers. International bureaucracies like the WHO and United Nations may complain but there’s no way of getting around that. Reasonable policy will set guard-rails and co-invest; the market will still dictate what, where, and how to build. Every country that has successfully rebuilt their manufacturing base (Germany, South Korea) has done it with this combination of policies. The United States will not be the exception to this rule.

Still, as described in Boggart Blog's Currency Wars page, China has been working to undermine the economies of the developed world for at least a decade and probably since around the tirn of the century. Politicians in the liberal democracies have been too afraid of being called protectionist, racist or nationalist to act in defence of domestic economies they have allowed the nations they serve to become dependent on China for far too many essential goods. Thrump's chaotic approach may mean there are painful times ahead but someone had to do something sometime.

De - Dollarisation: China, Brazil Make Deal To Ditch US Dollar For Bilateral Trades
China and Brazil this week concluded a deal to conduct trade between their nations in their own in their own currencies, ditching the established reserve currency for global trade, US dollar as an intermediary, the Brazilian announced said on Wednesday. This is Beijing’s latest strike against the almighty greenback in its currency war aimed at shifting the balance of geopolitical and economic power from west to east.

NATO Rhetoric About Russian Threat is 'Absurd'
The reasons being given for the latest NATO military buildup in Eastern Europe, the idea that the Russian 'Russian threat' to Eastern Europe grows every day is "simply absurd," according to former US diplomat and Senate policy advisor Jim Jatras. Effectively, Jatras says, the buildup is an attempt by the US to keep Germany and France on board with Washington's world domination agenda and ...

The Demise Of Dollar Hegemony: Russia Breaks Wall Streets's Oil-Price Monopoly
Significant moves in the global chess game have just rendered the huffing and puffing of warmonger Obama meaningless and will break Wall Street's monopoly in controlling oil markets. The move is part of Vladimir Putin's long-term strategy of decoupling Russia’s economy and especially its very significant export of oil, from the US dollar, in effect ...

Naked Bankers Go For Gold
... That gold sale in 2013 was a naked short. The seller had no gold to sell. COMEX reported having gold only equal to about half of the short sale in its vaults, and not all of that was available for delivery (quite a lot of it belonged to the german government) In effect the naked shorting of gold could only work because really the right hand was selling to the left hand.

The Demise Of Dollar Hegemony: Russia Breaks Wall Streets's Oil-Price Monopoly In a move that went almost completely unreported in mainstream media, Russia has recently opened a market for the trading of physical and 'paper' oil (futures) in Moscow in Roubles. This is the most blatant challenge yet to the domination of the US dollar in world trade.

WMD in Mayfair
Recalling yesterday's Machiavelli Blog which commented on events surrounding the unfortunate death of the alleged former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko, it seems the murder investigation has now found evidence of many caches (well OK, traces) of radio active toxins in various fashionable establishments in London's West End frequented by former Russian intelligence agents.

Refugee Crisis Or Existential Battle With USA for Europe
It has been clear for some years now that the USA, backed by its main NATO and EU military allies the UK and France (the FUKUS axis has been trying to provoke Russian into firing the shot that will be heard around the world and recognised as the startiung signal for World War Three.
Nothing is ever as it seems to be however, and views from middle east and far eastern journals suggest the USA is also working at destabilizing EU nations in order to force their support in its wars.

EU and US talk of war with Russia
The European People’s Party (EPP) is the largest political group in the European Parliament, and they are unerringly supportive of America's efforts to start a war with Russia. “The time of talk and persuasion with Russia is over," MEP and Vice-President of the EPP told a meeting on Tuesday, 21 April, “Now it’s time for a tough policy, and concentration on defence and security ...”

The Mediterranean Boat People Crisis - How Does Europe Deal With The Mediterranean Migrant Crisis
The numbers of migrants trying to cross from the Libya on the coast of north Africa to one of the EU's southern nations is increasing. Europe's impoverished southern nations can't cope. And in the better off nations of northern Europe immigration is a toxic issue which is fuelling the rise of anti EU parties from France to Finnland in the north and Hungary in the east. What can be done?

The Approach May Have Been Simplistic But Trump Was Right To Impose Tariffs

Donald Trump claimed he was being “kind” when he announced the biggest shift in US trade policy in a century. It was typical Trump bullshit of course, there's nothing kind about a kick in the bollocks, which is what he has delivered to world trade.

But was he right as the headline says? For decades the liberal democracies have been obsessed with free trade and globalisation. Tariffs drag us back to the days of expensive imported goods, long customs delays and obstructive regulations. So how can the move be positive?

The US president said reciprocal tariffs of 20pc on the EU and 34pc on China were the result of carefully calibrated calculations based on “the combined rate of all their tariffs and non-monetary barriers” such as currency manipulation.

A White House official said the calculations encapsulated “the sum of all cheating”.

“We will charge them approximately half of what they have been charging us,” President Trump told an audience in the Rose Garden of the White House.

The Trump administration published what looked like a complex-looking but rather theatrical algebraic formula complete with Greek letters to explain its rationale. But in the end, the tariffs boil down to simple maths, casting doubt on the idea that Sir Keir Starmer’s lobbying efforts in the US had any influence on the outcome.

The reciprocal rates are simply based on each country’s goods trade surplus with America relative to how much they send to the world’s biggest economy. Nothing more, nothing less.

On paper global free trade under United Nations and World Trade Organisation rules looks a great idea, but free trade involves everybody playing according to the same rules. And some nations are notorious for making u their own rules as they go along.  I'm sure it would be superfluous to name the main culprits, but it is not a new game and the current rule benders not originate this technique for boosting their economy.

While the USA has suffered somewhat, as issuer of the main reserve currency Washington has been able to protect US interests by manipulating exchange rates. Ironically this is one of the sins they now accuse China of. But don't feel sorry for China, in collaboration with Russia, Iran and a few other eastern nations thy have been working for years to dislodge the US dollar from its dominant position.

In a sense, Trump has already won his trade war, as the Cinese Communist PartyCCP) has massively expanded “export subsidies” to favoured manufacturers so that they dont have to pass Trump tariffs on to customers. In the first two months of this year export subsidies have already amounted  to the billions of Yuan. So the people who toil away in CCP controlled factories for CCP mandated wage rates are directly subsidising the western consumers as will their children with the epic CCP central bank expansion in money supply, to keep the CCP command economy above water.

WTO rules exist to ensure subsidies do not distort international competition or confer an unfair benefit on domestic producers. These rules are ultimately about protecting free and fair international trade and competition, so that one country's exports do not hold an unfair advantage over another.

In attacking Trump tariffs the TDS sufferers in Europe and around the world are missing the point. The EU, for example, is a vast protectionist regime with EU-wide and state subsidies distorting the actual price of its goods. For example, the CAP, the devaluation of the Deutsche euro as a currency for Germany, the subsidies to steel and other industrial goods, the EU tariff regime per se. This has allowed EU goods to be sold at reduced prices and has allowed the EU to accumulate a trade surplus with the USA. Are Trump's tariffs not a corrective measure and a negotiating starting point?

Same goes for China, their mssive subsidies to industry plus low labour costs because the government (The Party) controls wages and prices because as the leadership has made blatantly clear, China intends to dominate world trade in the not too distant future.

In view of these considerations Trump's impostion of tariffs are understandable and if (it's a bif IF,) they have the long term consequence of persuading all parties to observe the WTO rules by complying to, rather than bending them, it could benefit us all.

De-Dollarization Accelerates As More Washington "Allies" Follow Australia To China-Led Bank

For many years the dollar has been the currency in which the world's nations settled cross-border transactions and the so called petrodollar became the only currency in which oil could be traded. In recent years however, as other nations, particularly the BRICS group, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the leading nations outside the dominant US / European group, have been making moves to end the domination of the US dollar.

Why Iceland Recovery Is Being Ignored In Mainstream News
Iceland is a small country with less that half a million people so is not a good comparison with Britain. It's recovery from near bankruptcy in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis however is due to the rejection of politically correct, globalist politics so in that light it serves to illustrate that to suggest Britain (60 million people) cannot survive outside the EU is just globalist scaremongering.

It's Staring To Dawn On Economists That The Developed World's Economic Problems Are Structural.

When we look back from 2025, it will be painfully obvious that central bank policies exacerbated the systemic crises that brought down the global financialization machine. After all, "saving" the world from financial collapse 0f 2008 was relatively quick work; so what problems beyond imminent implosion have the central banks policies solved in the past 6 years

How The BRICS Summit Surpassed The G7 & G20 As The World’s Most Influential Gathering

 via Great Game India

The 16th BRICS Summit, held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, wasn’t just another meeting of world leaders. It marked a turning point in global politics. For the first time, this summit was viewed as more influential globally than the meetings of the G7 or G20, which typically dominate world discussions.

This year's summit was more worthy of our attention than usual because four new countries—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE—joined as official BRICS members in January. This move expanded BRICS beyond the original membership of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. As Russia hosted a gathering of 36 world leaders, the expanding BRICS+ initiative looks to be a growing obstacle to the hegemony US and its allies hoped to exercise.

Established in 2009, and later expanded in 2024, the BRICS+ geopolitical bloc draws its name from its original members (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) but now also includes Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the UAE.Significantly Saudi Arabia has been invited to join and has slready abandoned its committment to accept payment for oil exports only in US dollars, while others, such as Turkey, are also expected to join. Its members already constitute 45% of the world’s population and 28% of its economic output.

As such, it is often described as a geopolitical counterweight to the G7.  Russia and Iran and China are alrady collaborating to challence challenging the dominance in international trade of the dollar. The most important country is of course China, and China has been sitting on the fence over US led sanctions of Russia and Iran. The most likely reason China has held back from fully supporting the US against Russia and Iran is because Chinese state-controlled banks also do not want to be cut off from the US dollar and Wall Street.

And as long as China remains integrated in the global financial system centered on the US dollar, China is effectively the largest foreign funder of everything the US does, including sending weapons to Ukraine that are used against Russia and Taiwan that are pointed towards China.

China is of course also deeply integrated in global supply chain and trade networks, having become the wokshop of the world as net - zero obsessed wesern leaders have deindustrialised their economies, thus offshoring not only their CO2 emissions but jobs and revenue into the bargain. With the Chinese economy stuggling, any serious moves to decouple from this global dollar system could back fire disastrously.

BRICS+ is a reltively young organisation integration and coherence is rocky at best which should caution us to make any future projections based on current relationhips rather than deeper structural forces. strained relations between China and India, which significantly hampers collective BRICS action to the point of incoherence. Also, it is notable that Saudi Arabia has not yet joined along with UAE even though they said they would, and detente between the Shia Musim government of Iran and the Saudi Sunni Muslim monarchy has only taken place recently.

The original BRICS members were never as united as the G7 even without these new members.

The first step for the BRICS+ to challenge the West would be to build consensus for such a project to replace or at least seriously challence the Dollar, which does not exist, and most importantly to sell more oil in a currency other than the US dollar. And as this publication has reported extensively in the past that project is already well under way.

Many respected economists and market analysts who favour the free markets approach concur that we are heading towards a new economic reality that will see the collapse of the US$ as the default reserve currency, to be replaced not by any other fiat currency such as the Euro or the Renminbi, but by a system in which  commodities are the primary denominator of value. Should this turn out to be the case we can expect an acceleration of the shift in geopolitical power from west to East.
