Spain's Solar Power Boom Goes Bust and Busts The National Grid

Spain’s solar boom is running into a harsh reality: too much sunshine has created an energy glut, crashing prices and spooking investors, writes Hans van Leeuwen in the Telegraph.The article lays bare the insane voodoo-economics underlying all this Net Zero/Green energy nonsense.

In Spain, solar panels make much more sense than in the northern latitudes of UK with our cloudy skies and loooooong winter nights. So much sense that they’re producing too much energy, causing the price electricity companies pay producers to drop drastically. What happens then? Sell the excess energy to someone else – the French, or us – lowering prices elsewhere? 

Nope, the grid and interconnectors can’t take the surplus energy, last year a sunny spell in summer overloaded transformers on the national distribution grid and knocked out electricity supply to homes and businesses over a large part of the country. Continue covering thousands of square miles of productive agricultural land with panels that produce electricity nobody wants and Store it? Nope: no-one bothered to think about storage technology (or rather the lack of it). Provide the energy to Ramon and Luz in the house down the road, at a zero price? Nope, not allowed: because the whole push is wrapped in a bonkers guaranteed-price straitjacket.

So, instead: switch off the solar plant.  Yes switch them off because the gas and nuclear power stations must be kept running in order to level the loading on the grid when supplies from intermittent sources suddenly fluctuate.  These fabulous solutions to pollution, supposedly providing cheap energy, have to be switched off to keep the price high. For years this blog has been saying Net Zero is a scam built on the Climate Catastrophe hoax.

It’s tempting to read this as “greedy investors gaming a  badly thought out system, traducing good intentions”; that is certainly our problem in Britain, particularly net zero crazy Scotland where energy producers are paid more for NOT producing electricity than they earn from current fed into the grid, and there may be some element of it in Spain.

But whether it’s the evil Capitalists putting up the money, or government doing it directly (and the generation/transmission complex is a textbook case of potential market failure), someone has to pay for the construction and maintenance of these expensive, brand-new solar plants and they are not cheap to build and maintain. Perhaps this prioritising theory over reality is why green power has failed so miserably.

It seems to me that a guaranteed future price is one of the  most counter productive ways of raising the money. As your friendly local free-market economist will tell you, it suppresses an important signal.

Some signal is getting through nevertheless, and investment in solar in Spain is drying up. What’s wrong with that? Well, it’s only wrong because Spain has to expand solar, according to Book of Net Zero 1:1 – even if the market signals (and the underlying realities they reflect) don’t make it worthwhile. Build more solar plants, and switch them (and the existing ones) off more often.

The logic of the Net Zero lobby is totally insane.
