After exit polls on the Mecklenberg-Vorpommern and Berlin state elections predicted another humiliation for the CDU led coalition government, hapless German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has vowed to stay in office promising to drive future-proofing economic changes through the legislative process and so halt the rise of the so called 'far right' AfD party despite heavy losses for his conservatives in two state elections, one to the far right and the other to Die Linke, a left-wing extremist party.
Preliminary projections suggested Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), for decades Germany'd dominant party, may struggle to reach the 5 per cent threshold to enter the state parliament in the coastal region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania when the final result is announced. With the result already confidently predicted to be the worst-ever state for the party, failure to gain any representation in the state parliament would be a disaster a for the CDU / CSU partnership and could easily trigger moved for force Merz to resign..
The anti-immigration, Eurosceptic Alternatif for Germany (AfD) party, recent victors in the Saxony - Anhalt election extended a streak of strong showings by coming in first in the former East German region with nearly 38 per cent, more than doubling its previous score.
In the capital, Berlin, one of Germany’s 16 federal states, the Left party (Die Linke) looked on course to win with about 25 per cent of the vote, ahead of the incumbent CDU by a five-point margin. The AfD made headway there too, with a clear double-digit result.
Merz blamed the polarisation of German society and a “harshening of the political debate” for his failure to pass key reforms on the economy and to stop the rise of the AfD which has been branded a threat to democracy. Merz and his party in collaboration with the socialist SDP party have tried to use this to have AfD banned from the democratic process. On that evidence it is clearly Merz and his coalition partners who pose the threat of a return to fascism in Germany though similar moves are apparent in Britain and throughout Europe.
However he and his two predecessors' suicidal immigration policies, commitment to Loonytoons energy policy in pursuit of Net Zero and failures to respond to changing economic conditions and to first close the borders and control illegal immigration against and then to deport fake refugees and asylum seekers, (in reality economic migrants seeking an easy life provided by one of Europe's most generous welfare benefit systems,) are responsible for the polarisation of German society and the rise of the AfD.
Voters cannot be expected to support a party that virtually invited foreigners to invade their country. Merkel should have resisted the urge to regress back into the dutiful daughter of a Luthern pastor who couldn't restrain herself from issuing a "come one and all" invitation to all suffering souls on earth, and instead fulfilled her adult responsibilities as the PM the citizens had entrusted with both their own welfare and that of their country. The party that refused to rein her in should have expected to become a pariah after the damage its inaction caused finally became painfully obvious.
