As The War For Control Of The Persian Gulf Enters A New Phase, Iran Holds All The Best Cards

 Every day that the conflict between  USA/Israel and Iran continues and the main shipping route into The Persian Gulf remains completely or partially closed, the world is deprived of an eighth of its oil supply and must draw more deeply into its rapidly diminishing reserves.

“The scale of the challenge has not been well understood by the aggressors: as of today, we are losing 13 million barrels per day and tomorrow it may be bigger,” said Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency. This blog reported last year during a preliminary skirmish to the war that if The USA or Israel attacked Iran the Iraian response would be to weaponise The Strait of Hormuz by blockading the movement of ships in and out..

They have done just that, and now US President Trump is blockading ships belonging to Iran's allies from using the Strait, Iran is threatening that its Houthi allies in Yemen will block the route in and out of the Red Sea, which would leave The Suez canal, capable of handling only a fraction of the traffic to and from oil ports in Saudi Arabia. With Trump's ceasefire unlikely to hold as reports come in of Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hourmuz the world must prepare for prolonged economic disruption.

In spite of all Trump's bluster the fact is that because it can position artillery on the high ground overlooking the strait and hide small, fast, heavily armed gunboats in the numerous coves and inlets along it's Gulf coast Iran can maintain its ability to control the flow of oil by tanker out of the Strait of Hormuz almost indefinitely

If nothing else this war should have shown the Green Loons that oil and hydrocarbons are still the world's most important trade. 

The shortfall is likely to rise to 15 million barrels if the US navy carries out its plan to blockade Iranian oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz, which is extremely unlikely as it would mean attacking ships from China.  Donald Trump launched this war with inadequate forces based on Israeli assurances – deemed “farcical” by his own CIA chief – that Iran would crumble at the first shock, thus while failure was not guaranteed, it was always more likely than a quick victory.

Tehran has warned it will expand the war to the Red Sea route if its ships are attacked or sunk, endangering another six million barrels a day at the Saudi terminal of Yanbu and causing wider havoc to global container shipping. Should this happen it will plunge everywhere in the world into a fuel crisis plus economic and political chaos.

“The ports of the Gulf are either for everyone or for no one,” the Iranian regime said.

It is rumoured that the  authorities in China, which is tacitly supporting Iran, filled their strategic petroleum reserve at a breakneck pace towards the end of last year as a cushion against the fall out from another US / Israeli attack on Iran. If the worst comes to the worst  they can cover 300 days of lost imports from the Gulf, and have also negotiated a deal for Russia to cover any shortfall in its supplies due to problems with the Gulf supply line.

We don't know any of that for certain of course. The size of China's oil reserves are a state secret, and 300 days' worth is well above most estimates (90 - 130 days).

Whatever the case, it is wrong to assert that cutting off oil from the Gulf is a problem China can just shrug off - it can't. That represents a shortfall of several millions barrels a day. China can't sustain that, and those oil reserves are war reserves - it will never let them run completely dry.

In the end, it's a game of chicken. Someone has to blink first. It might be Trump, but I'm by no means certain of that.

Trump's Plan To Blockade Iran's Blockade Of The Strait Of Hormuz Is Not Impossible, Just Crazy

President Trump’s latest pronunciations on the conflict with Iran makes it clear that he is going to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.  With peace negotiations having hit the brick wall of Islamist intransigence almost as soon as they had got under way, this is the latest power move to wrestle control of the Strait back off Iran, where it currently resides.

“Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz. At some point, we will reach an ‘ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT’ basis” Trump ranted on Truth Social.

A blockade on a blockade, is certainly something we don't come acros often. Though it sounds illlogical in practical terms such a move would not be difficult. The US will have excellent situational awareness of all ships coming and going, their details, and most likely whether or not they have either been given a free pass by Iran or have paid at the toll booth, so the US Navy could prevent vessels approaching the strait from the Indian Ocean and also stop ships leaving The Persian Gulf via the strait. A plan for US Navy warships to escort commercial vessels through the strait has also been considered..

However any attempt to blockade Iran would necessitate the use of force to prevent Indian, Chinese and Russian ships from entering Iranian harbors.
 
At the same time, a blockade of Iran would represent a total U-turn from America’s tactics in recent weeks, and necessitate lifting sanctions on Russian and even Iranian oil, in order to avoid a catastrophic cutoff of global energy supplies and an ensuing economic depression.
 
In the unlikely event that the US proceeds with a blockade, the entire rest of the world would focus its ire on the US. NATO would collapse. Japan and Korea would see that the US is a nihilistic monster, indifferent to their economic destruction and looming starvation and the dollar exchange rate would crash.
 

The US government has well and truly backed itself into a corner. Given its established habit of doubling down on what didn’t work, all one can foresee is more feckless bombing of Iran — which will not open the Strait.

Iran - US Peace Talks Dead - Well We All Knew They Were Stillborn

Peace talks between the US and Iran aimed at ending the middle east conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping have reached a “dead end”, mediators have said. A spokesman for theThe Islamic Republic regime told negotiators from third-party countries attempting to mediate negotiations that US demands were “unacceptable”, according to The Wall Street Journal. Tehran said it was unwilling to meet US officials in Pakistan in the coming days as planned.

Islamabad had hosted initial talks to end the Gulf war alongside foreign ministers from Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which were never attended by the US, Israel or Iran.Officials from Turkey and Egypt are still considering new venues for talks, including Doha or Istanbul, and are also looking at fresh proposals to overcome the deadlock, according to the mediators.

Negotiations have stalled since Donald Trump, the US president, presented Tehran with a 14-point peace plan that was deemed unrealistic by the Iranian regime.

Iran has now gained leverage for its negotiating position by closing the entrance to the Persian Gulf and disrupting global oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Though Trump is making ridiculous claims about his ceasefire ending the war and having crushed Iran, the US that is more keen on a peace deal as Iran has the advantage here, and to the Ayatollahs who lead that country every war is a holy war and they are never going to meekly roll over. 

Trump can bomb them back to the stone age which would be a war crime since it targets civilians, but that will take a lot of bombs and a lot of time because Iran has a huge land area. However provided Iran can fire the odd drone or missile or launch a small, fast, heavily armed boat from its mosquito fleet periodically at tankers in The Gulf, no insurance will be possible and the Strait of Hormuz remains shut. 

With Russia and China supporting Iran with weapons and technology the greatet risk of escalation for the USA is that, having seen the weakness of the western alliance, the BRICS powers might just decide the opportunity to destroy American economic dominance is too good to miss.  

The west can expect elevated gas, food and oil prices for a long time, government debt will become more expensive, living costs - already at crisis level due to misguided Net Zero policies - will continue to rise and the global economy will be plunged into recession. 

There is now no way out of this for Trump without regime change  and though he claimed the reigime had been destroyed the old guard are still in place, this is why the USA needs a negotiated peace. The only other way to end the war os a land invasion which requires hundreds of thousands of troops and offers no gurantee of success. There would be a 50 / 50 chance of another forever war like Iraq, Aghanistan or \vietnam. 

The White House and The Pentagon have miscslculated badly here, this blog warned Iran would be no pushover and most military experts said the same. The tolerance for pain from the regime is much greater than  Western poplations are prepared to put up with. I am no fan of the Islamists and have felt for a long time that Iran's theocratic regime needed to be dealt with however this is not going to end well for Trump or the global economy

With Both Sides Propaganda Machines Turned Up To Eleven No - one Can Predict How The War On Iran Will End

 

Right now everybody seems to be playing the game of predicting how Trump's war in Iran will end. Will Trump send in the Marines and put American boots on Iranian ground to start a land war? Will the Ayatollahs close entrance to the Gulf completely and plunge the global economy into total chaos? Will the US Navy supported by six sailors from Britain, a couple of French chefs, and a sheep shearer from Australia (unless he stops off in Bangkok en route to the Gulf and forgets why he left Oz in the first place,) will escort dozens of Tankers a day through The Strait of Hormuz where all marine traffic will be sitting ducks for Iranian artillery, missiles, unmanned drone boats?

It's a futile game because as lomg as Iran has any military personnel it can keep the narrow seaway closed. 

There are only two ways this kerfuffle can end: either Iran capitulates, or Iran fights on but becomes a bankrupt failed state with a wrecked economy. Which of the two occurs depends on Iran’s stubbornness, the patience of the USA and Israel and how much support Russia and China are prepared to give their allies in Tehran. For Trump, a quick Iranian surrender followed by regime change and a more reasonable Iranian regime is the preferred option for now, but Trump is known for changing his mind and as his original four week timeframe for ending this war is not looking good we should be prepared for an even crazier reaction from the US President. 

There is no outcome where an intransigent Iran comes out of this intact, but then it can be argued that Iran has been a failed state since Shah Reza was ousted by a bunch of ragheads who wanted to drag the middle east's most advanced and prosperous nation back to a state of medieval, theocratic ignorance.

Iran’s oil economy could be the key for USrael to exploit. The threat of destroying Iran’s oil industry ought to be more effective than the act itself but it carries a huge risk. Destroying the energy industry can’t be undone in the event of regime change or Iran’s surrender. So far, strikes on energy installations have been just small enough to demonstrate that Iran’s economy can be destroyed any time USrael wishes. Iran’s leadership will continue to be circulated until somebody willing to cut a deal takes the reins.

Large scale attacks on Iranian oilfields or an invasion of Kharg Island could easly bring China into the conflict because the Chinese get most of their oil and petrochem products from Iran. And as we have said before Iran can cause catastrophic disruption in the global economy so long as they have the ability to keep The Strait of Hormuz closed. And they can do that as long as China is prepare to keep supplying the missiles and Russia the drones. 

Iran can wreck the whole global economy and, so long as it retains the ability to launch missile and drone strikes, can set Arab oil producing states back years.  America's claims of economic and military dominance will be challenged by China.  EU will go through economic and political hell s it is forced to be dependent on Russian gas and oil.  The globe – and now, Americans – will pay a heavy price for letting Israel run loose.  Iran has leverage and will use it.  They will suffer but not be defeated anymore than Vietnam was.  

Longer term the problem we Boggart Bloggers see is that USA is mostly untouchable on their continent – not that their economy can’t or won’t crash – but once they recover from that and a possible civil war they may have an economy, area, navy but without competent leadersp (and the Democrats are even more incompetent than The Republicans,) those things mean nothing.

The UK, under leadership even more incompetent that the US or EU will fail to grasp the opportunity of exploiting the oil and gas reserves under seas surrouding the British archipelago and so continue its decline as leaders and ruling elites congratulate themselves on being the most 'woke' failed state on the planet 

 Another problem for the USA is that the current conflict hurts others more than the Iran. If the US deep state sacrifices Trump and withdraws from the region there will be plenty countries willing to deal with the Ayatollahs, Japan, EU, India, GCC states, China, Russia.. There is no enduring morailty among states.

USA isn’t really something Iran can touch apart from causing economic pain by keeping the entrance to the Gulf closed. This is  enough to cause trouble but end of the day there are still 350 million of them sitting in their own space churning out weapons for revenge, drilling, fracking and pumping for survival. Not sure how a moral rejuvenation of Ameerica would look like and what might induce it. Americans won’t look into a mirror tomorrow and ask “are we the Baddies? Is it us who should have stayed atr home and let other nations deal with their own problems”. This would need cataclysmic levels of deprogramming.

 There are some things Iran doesn’t seem to be getting too well. Shia heaven and all but if you allow an experienced well spoken and respected person like Larjani to be killed, you have taken an avoidable loss. Tying one hand behind your back and sparing Israeli IDF reservist civilians instead of taking out their enrgy on day one – mistake.

Military Analysis Say Prepare For Long War As Iran Proves To Be No Pushover

 

On Day 5 of the Trump's ridiculously named Operation Epic Furry which was conceived to prepare Iran for regime change, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared the US is "winning,"  signalling that additional American forces are ready to be deployed to Iran and vowing Washington will take "all the time it needs" to secure 'victory'. But but a major public backlash against the campaign is gathering momentum rapidly as the reality that Iran is proving no pushover (as this blog warned last year) is beginning to dawn on the American population.

However not everybody is confident of a quick resolution. In a statement released earlier this week Russian military leaders warned that the conflict in Iran could extend over a prolonged period, reflecting concerns about the ongoing U.S.-Israeli military actions and Iran's determined response. 

President Trump himself suggested an open-ended timeline, but expressed that four or five weeks should do the job. Americans, however, might recall similar pledges were made at the start of the Iraq war, which ended up being a 20 year occupation and bloody quagmire. Recall that in 2002, Bush's then Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld declared of impending Iraq operations: "Five days or five weeks or five months, but it certainly isn't going to last any longer than that...It won't be a World War III." With that in mind, Hegseth for the first time Wednesday suggested up to eight weeks.

Iranian state media is reporting that the death toll from U.S.-Israeli strikes has climbed to at least 1,045. US losses stand at (at least) six service members killed, with several critically wounded, but CENTCOM has yet to issue a new Wednesday casualty update. It also announced that a planned late-night ceremony in Tehran honoring Iran’s slain supreme leader was abruptly postponed, officially due to "logistical issues".

The problem is US government and military leaders in The Pentagon did not think though the attack properly. They assumed a quick campaign of air strikes to soften up the Iranians, then the ever aggressive Kurds in northern Iran being activated to commit suicide against the Iran's Republican guard, and with the theocratic regimes best troops otherwise occupied a surprise incursion by Israel's IDF to take Tehran and game over. 

Well that's my guess, but if it's anywhere near right the Americans did not factor into their plan the Strait of Hormuz. 

Some 20% of the global supplies of oil, LPG and fertilizers have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had long announced that the Strait would be closed if the country would come under attack. It has held to its promise and made American claims to have opened Hormuz look ridiculous. A few small ships have since tried to pass through the Strait but were stopped by Iranian strike impacts. Ship insurance companies have stopped to provide cover for any passage of the Strait.

After occupying Iraq for 20 years in this century Washington appartently still does not understand the geographic facts of the Strait of Hormuz chokepoint. Here it is in picture form:

 

Given the geography of the area it is easy to see why even with more that half its navy subk or disabled Iran can effectively close the strait to large ship and keep it closed. The terriain on either side of the waterway is mountainous and barren, idea for mounting a stealth campaign using mobile artillery and drones to attack shipping, do the damage and then move quickly leaving western aircraft to bomb rocks and hills.

Trump is talking crazy nonsense when he floats ideas like providing US and NATO warships to escort commercial vessels through the strait? Even crazier stuff like US boots on the ground when anyone with the slightest understanding of US force levels in the region know it would take half a year of build-up to make that even a remote possibility?  

Well, we can assume everyone in the Administration and the Pentagon are a bunch of idiots who leap before looking. This view is compatible with the delusions of a certain population that is victim to a particular mass psychogenic illness. They find this view comforting since it means that simply changing which team has the ball in the US political show will fix everything.
 
Or we could assume that the Administration never really intended things to turn into a shooting war and the whole naval and air power buildup was just a bluff to add leverage to imperial bluster. But then something happened and the bluff was called. But who called it? Not the Iranians, of course. I think it is fairly obvious who forced the Empire’s hand, but I will leave that as a question for discussion. I’ll just say that it is a really bad idea to bluff like that when you are partnered with the very most psychotic of psychopaths. 

We Boggart Bloggers are not seeing any viable way for the West to engage in a land war against Iran. Based on the adage that a ship cannot beat a fort and that air-only campaigns don’t win wars it then the decisive means comes down to economics and by close association logistics. The West was convinced that economic means we’re going to crush Russia, it has proven to be a failure. Unless someone can show how Iran can be defeated via economic means, when Iran's biggest customer for its oil and produce is China there is no way for Iraq to be defeated quickly.That said, Iran cannot defeat the West. It looks like becoming a long war as some of Trump's military experts predicted

 Israel could be the key, via air strikes. However air strikes can have a significantly greater affect on Israel’s (and the West’s) ability to wage war on Iran.

Individual battles are great for conversation pieces but the true objective is the war. Russia has shown that the West is incapable of militarily defeating a true opponent; and for the economic angle it is the same (Iran has weathered and adjusted to economic forces against it). Strategy matters. 

Support from Russia and China is there as needed to win the war , logistics, strategy and intelligence. Unlike with Syria, Iran WILL accept support.  Assad’s mistake was that he thought he could get back into good graces of the West and feared that having any significant support from Russia would negatively affect that pursuit- Assad, educated in an elite English school had too much of a Western brain, a problem he shares with US and European leaders who simply do not understand the fanatical mindset of Islamists.

Could a US Dock Strike Put Trump Back In The White House?

Though rumours have been circulating in the shipping industry for weeks, this story of a possible game changing event has so far been ignored by of major US news organisations. Ryan Peterson of port operator Flexport blew the whistle last week on a looming industrial dispute that could bring trade at most major American seaports to a standstill.

Peterson tweeted (or Xd or whatever,) :

"The biggest wildcard in the presedential election that nobody's talking about? The looming port strike that could shut down all east coast and Gulf ports just 36 days before the election."

He then followed through with:
If the International Longshoremans' Association (ILA) goes on strike tens of thousands of businesses could miss the key Black Friday / Cyber Monday peak sales period.

 The economic impact of such a strike would be catastrophic for the US economy.
In 2023, U.S. seaport trade totaled $2.12 trillion. If the ILA strikes, U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports—which handle 72% of that trade—would grind to a halt. The ILA union has voted to prepare for a strike beginning October first, and the industry watchers do not believe this is an idle threat.

If the strike goes ahead it could be a major issue for Democrats: economic problems tend to hurt the incumbent party.

It would also put pressure on the Biden administration to halt the strike by invoking the Taft-Hartley Act, which could start a fight with organized labor. The surprise decision by the Teamsters, Democratic party stalwarts for generations, to not the candidacy of Kamala Harris shows that there are already cracks in the Democrats alliance with organized labor. 

“The economic impact is a tsunami when we potentially have half of the country’s ports closing down,” Margaret Kidd, associate professor of supply chain and logistics at the University of Houston, told MarketWatch.

The dispute has arisen because The International Longshoremen’s Union is demanding significantly higher wages and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container handling logistiics equipment used in the loading or loading of freight at the 36 affected U.S. ports. Whenever and however the dispute is resolved, it’s likely to affect how freight moves in and out of the United States for years to come.

If a strike were resolved within a few days,  experts say, consumers probably wouldn’t notice any major shortages of retail goods. But a strike that persists for more two weeks it would likely cause a shortage of some consumer products, although most holiday retail goods have already arrived from overseas.

A prolonged strike would almost certainly hurt the U.S. economy. Even a brief strike would cause disruptions. Heavier vehicular traffic would be likely at key points around the country as cargo was diverted to West Coast ports, where workers belong to a different union not involved in the strike. And once the longshoremen’s union eventually returned to work, a ship backlog would likely result. For every day of a port strike, experts say it takes four to six days to clear it up. 

This means if the strike goes ahead by Nov 5th it will be affecting millions of American voters. And the Trump campaign will not even need to point the finger of blame at the Biden / Harris administration's loonytoons economic policies, everybody will know what has caused the strike.

Iran Has Yet To Play Its Strongest Card

A few days days ago the container ship MSC Aries was boarded in the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces and forced to anchor off the coast of Iran. The incident  was overshadowed by the Iranian drone and missile attacks on Israel and was hardly mentioned by mainstream media. However as far as the western nations are concerned this incident is potentially far more significant.

If the hijacking of Aries is the first act by the Iranians  in challenging freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as part of their wider campaign against Israel (and allies) then this means an oil crisis and higher fuel costs for Europe as far more oil, from Saudi Arabia's main ports, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iraq and Kuwait passes through that narrow waterway than any other shipping route in the world. To make matters worse the navy forces if the USA and NATO are currently occupied in keeping the Bab-el-Mandeb strait open for shipping at the southern end of the Red Sea, as attacks by Houthi rebels based in Yemen are proving more disruptive than anybody expected.

Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz and traditionally disrupts marine traffic at the first hint on any crisis, but as the current crisis is more serious than any we have seen for years the Ayatollahs who rule the authoritarian theocracy have a greater incentive to disrupt or even halt movement of shipping through the waterway. 

Since the Houthis began their drone attacks on shipping in the Southern Red Sea last October, the the Strait of Hormuz has been relatively quiet, suggesting which may mean the Iranians’  are focusing their attention on effort was going into helping the Houthis in Yemen or simply that the Red Sea situation has led to reduced volumes of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

 So the question now is whether or not this new incident was a one-off attack in response to the Israeli strike on the Iranian “consulate” in Syria or the start of a concerted campaign to disrupt shipping in the Strait which, if Iran chooses to play it, will be the trump card that decides the outcome of this game. 

Iran has never had a better opportunity to damage the west economically, escalate the conflict of the Islamic world with Israel and strengthem its own ties with China and Russia. If the Ayatollahs choose to play this ace, international naval resources would be spread even more thinly than they already are, with the situations in The Black Sea and the South China Sea showing no signs of easing and the west's dependence on internet technologies demanding that in a time of global unrest more resources are devoted to policing the underwater cables that carry international traffic and supporting industrial, financial and commercial activity. Iranians are not stupid, they know this. Hopefully, the hijacking of the MV aries was a one-off, not a new front in what is rapidly developing into World War Three.
