So Keir Starmer is gone. The man who so piously hounded Boris Johnson out of Downing Street for eating cake, or something like that, has been undone by his own unfittedness for the job and yet was so out of his depth as a national leader has been deservedly kicked out after an even shorter time in office. There is some justice in the world.
About time, too. I predicted in February he would go this year, though this hardly required great prognosticatory powers on my part. And one of the main reasons Starmer had to go was demonstrated in his resignation speech in which the outgoing Prime Minister detailed his achievements while in office, needless to say all were of dubious provenance, while humiliations like the rout in local council elections by Nigel Farage's Reform, acts of treason like the Chagos Islands giveaway, the Chinese Super Embassy Scandal, Mandygate, Two tier policing and justice, the mystery of the three Ukrainian rent boys, the hamfisted attempts to whitewash the grooming gangs scandal, Southport killings, and the issue of illegal immigrants sex crimes were glossed over.
Anyone could see that the bond between Starmer and his party, always unromantic and transactional at best, was broken. Maybe it was the Mandelson affair. Maybe successive electoral disasters. Maybe frankly incomprehensible policies like handing over Chagos or scrapping jury trials. Or maybe just Starmer’s inability to read the room and show actual, directional, leadership without U-turning. Which of us outsiders may know the counsel of the Labour Party or the will of its members?
Whatever the exact cause, after a long list of failures in addition to those mentioned above, the oustng of Starmer had become inevitable. The necessary condition for stopping the Weekend at Bernie’s farce and ceasing to prop him up was lack of a plausible replacement. Finally despairing of such a figure emerging, the Labour Party has chosen to imagine one anyway in Andy Burnham, and to elevate him to Prime Minister.
Burnham,the man who was beaten in two past Labour leadership elections, the undistinguished Blair-era minister, the mayor who reinvented himself as The Prime Minister In The North, is going to be running the country? Seriously? It’s true that Manchester is a much improved city, though quite how much responsibility Burnham himself bears for the transformation is arguable.
To turn Britain round will be very painful, a lot more difficult that turning a faded industrial city around and can only be done if the right person is found to give us the painful medicine and for a long time. That person will have to be tough and relentless and there will be many obstacles along the road before things get better. I do not think that the British can tolerate such a situation as most are unable to understand the trouble we are in.
Economic collapse is probably what will happen as taxation has killed the incentive to invest, work or start new business. Many in business want out and it makes little sense to start a new one unless you have an exceptionally good idea.
The story of the left is always the same. To be Robin Hood, to take from
the rich (by definition undeserving exploitative bullshit) and give to
the poor (by definition hard done by paragons of love & virtue).
The reality of life and economies is very different.
The idea that the North can be revitalised by investing government money
is a mirage. What is needed is to unshackle and encourage industry and
business throughout this land. Not shut down whole industries with mad
energy policies – the oil industry in Aberdeen, the Steel Industry, the
Fishing Industry, the Car Industry. Not seek to centrally control the
price of everything. Not hike the minimum wage so youngsters are forced
onto the scrap heap. Not to artificially grow the economy by borrowing money to fund increased benefits for the ever ex[anding non-working class.
The problem that wuill cause the downfall of any future socialist leadr is that socialist are incapable of understanding that socialism just doesn't work.
