The Person You Think Is Your Family Doctor Is Actually A Drug Pusher For Big Pharma

 This blog is far from the only alt_media publication to have been warning for years about misplaced trust in the medical professions. Once upon a time, long long ago, working in healthcare was considered a vocation, being a doctor or nurse was not a career but a calling. The main objective, in the words of the hippocratic oath,' was to 'preserve life and alleviate suffering' and the profit motive came way down the list of priorities.

Gradually however, over the space of several decades, drug companies formed a cartel and devised a business model founded on making us all patients for life. Under this regime of 'health tyranny' the purpose of medicines shifted from provision of a cure to merely masking symptoms (often at the cost of creating another problem as a side effect of the drug, which in turn needed another medicine. A pill for everything and a cure for nothing was an aphorism often recited by critics of the system. Unfortunately the warnings fell on mostly deaf ears as the propaganda of health tyranny made undeliverable promises to abolish sickness by medicationg the enire population with preventive drugs and therapies.

Now at last, after several medical scandals and a multitude of embarrassments, some in the medical professions are rebelling against the corruption of their noble cause by corporate money.

Dr. Roger McFillin writes in The Expose:

Remember when your family doctor was actually your doctor? That quaint historical period when physicians made independent medical judgments instead of reading from pharmaceutical scripts? When they looked at you as a unique human being rather than a collection of compliance metrics needing correction?

Those days are f**king gone.

Today’s primary care physician is something entirely different – a pharmaceutical compliance officer with a prescription pad, a corporate protocol to follow and overlords tracking their every move. They’ve transitioned from healers to hustlers, from medical professionals to medication pushers, from trusted advisors to glorified drug dealers with better parking.

I recently had a conversation with a paediatrician that exposed the naked truth of modern medicine. He confessed to me – with a mixture of resignation and discomfort – that he was “mandated” to administer the PHQ-9A (depression screening) to every adolescent, and if they scored above a certain threshold, he MUST offer a SSRI* antidepressant.

“What if the teen is just going through a breakup or having normal adolescent mood swings?” I asked.

He shrugged helplessly. “Doesn’t matter. If they hit the number on the screening, protocol says I have to offer medication.”

“But you know these drugs more than double the risk of suicidal events in teenagers,” I pressed. “The black box warning exists for a reason.”

His response chilled me: “If something happened to the teen and I didn’t follow protocol – if I didn’t offer the medication – I could be held liable. My hands are tied.”

And there it was – the perfect analogy hiding in plain sight. This highly educated physician with years of training wasn’t making independent medical decisions. He was a street-level drug dealer who feared what would happen if he didn’t move enough product for his overlords. The corner pusher fears his supplier’s enforcers; the modern physician fears “liability” and “protocol violations.” Different vocabulary, identical dynamic.

Primary care has been transformed from a healing profession into a pharmaceutical distribution network with doctors serving as glorified vending machines in white coats. They’re the street-level dealers in the medical-industrial complex, pushing products with the ruthless efficiency of a cartel but with better branding and tax benefits.

The parallels between how primary care physicians push psychiatric drugs and vaccines are so perfect that they deserve admiration from a purely marketing perspective. It’s the same hustle with different packaging – one comes in pill form, the other in a needle, but the script is identical.

Governments Use The Welfare State To Force Compliance On Vaccine Mandates

The state government of Illinois, the USA's own shithole state where rule of law long ago gave way to mob rule, has followed the example of several third world shithole countries introduced legislation that effectively denies healthcare to unvaccinated people by requiring those who are not vaccinated  to pay for healthcare services. A state congressman, John Carroll introduced a bill to the state congress that will marginalise unvaxxed people just a Jews were marginalised in Nazi Germany. And as if wishing to prove a leopard cannot change its spots, Germany is now threatening to prevent unvaccinated people from carrying out essential activities such as buying food.

This Illinois law is just the latest attempt to find cruel and unusual ways to punish people who refuse comply with the campaign orchestrated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the neo Nazi World Economic Forum (WEF) to force everybody in the world to accept a vaccination that does not protect us against a disease that 98% of us are never going to get and that of those who do get it 97.5% make a full recovery. 

WBBM Radio in Chicago reports:

[Jonathan] Carroll's legislation would amend the state's insurance code so that "a person who is eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine and chooses not to be vaccinated shall pay for health care expenses out-of-pocket if the person becomes hospitalized because of COVID-19 symptoms."

In plain English, Carroll is trying to ensure that the unvaccinated will be denied health insurance for COVID treatments, even in cases where private insurance is already bought and paid for. And given that anyone who enters a hospital anywhere in the world will be immediately diagnosed with COVID by the result of a test which gives 80% false positives. But as usual with measures introduced by government during the hoax pandemic it is the poorest in society who will be hit hardest, since one-third of thepopulation is already receiving government-funded healthcare.

Wht is most appalling however is that such as brutally authoritarian policy can come from someone like Carroll, a self identified progressive who is 'on message' with all the sacred cow policies of the tyrannical left, including LGBT rights, open borders, destroying life on earth to save the planet from climate change, supporting BLM calls to eliminate 'white supremacists' and all the other irrevelant bullshit that the illiberal liberals obsess about . 

Carroll's bill is of course another example of left wing hypocrisy and double standards. For decades, we've been hearing from that side of the political spectrum that "healthcare is a human right" which must be provided free to all and funded by the long - suffering taxpayers. Anything short of universal state funded healthcare is unacceptable the mantra goes. 

And all of this hysterical screeching in support of mandatory vaccines, vaccine passports and demands that vaccine refusniks or sceptics be sent  to special rehabilitation centres that have a sign reading Vaccine Macht Frei over the entrance is coming from the political faction who have spent the past 40 years accusing people who hold perfectly reasonable and fair minded opinions on human rights, liberty and political extremism  of being fascists.

Apparently, the mandatory vaccine advocates—found largely among the people who identify as progressive, liberal, socialist,, of course—are so obsessed with forcing mandatory vaccines on the entire population that they're now looking for ways to deny people healthcare if they refuse a vaccine that is, according to unbiased science, more likely to damage their health than protect it..

We have often said leftists have no humor and so cannot recognise the ironies of their own positions. For decades leftists have demanded full employment and a socialist utopis in which the state cares for us all 'from the cradle to the grave' as UK politicial Aneurin Bevan promised. But since the regime of 'Dementia Joe' Biden in the USA lighted on the idea of tying employment to vaccines earlier this year, advocates of vaccine mandates now want to you be jobless, destitute and starving if you refuse the clotshot. 

The mandate are also structured  to ensure that those made redundant for refusing the shot for refusing the jab will make themselves be ineligible for unemployment insurance. Although the mandates have been forced on employers in the USA, Australia, Germany and many other nations.

(Needless to say, left wing, liberal and progressive lawmakers haven't intervened to expand the welfare state on this matter as they have tried and sometimes succeeded in doing to obtain generous welfare benefit payments for illegal immigrants - who incidentally do not have to be vaccinated in order to qualify for their handouts. )

So it turns out that healthcare, jobs, and a "social safety net" aren't 'inalienable human rights' at all. NowThey are privileges bestowed by the state on those who have shown they are willing to obey orders without question and never question the authority of the state. Vaccine mandate advocates have decided both social programs and regulatory powers can be cynically employed as weapons in a campaign to bully and coerce citizens intocompliance while stripping them of the rights and liberties formerly enshrined in the United Nations conventions on Human Rights.

One of the items of evidence that figures for COVID vaccine take up claimed by governments of the developed nations is the number of doctors, nurses and people working in healthcare professions who are refusing to get the "clotshot." In the UK, where the National Health Service is always on the brink of crisis because of difficulty recruiting and retaining staff, the current situation is being exacerbated by the numbers of workers who were ordered by the government to get vaccinated against Covid-19 or lose their jobs have left the industry en masse for better paid positions at companies such as Amazon, creating massive staffing shortages.

According to a report on the staffing crisis in the left wing Guardian newspaper which included interviews with several care home industry officials, “three-quarters of care home operators are reporting an increase in staff quitting since April,” with the reasons being “a desire for less stress and for higher pay” and “to avoid mandatory vaccination, which comes into effect on 11 November.”

Even though the vaccine has not yet been made mandatory for hospital and health centre workers it was reported back on April of this year, also reported in The Guardian with a similar report in The Daily Telegraph that a significant number of NHS front line staff were refusing the vaccine, saying the medications were not true vaccines as they do not provide immunity, are not properly tested and not enough is known about possible long term side effects. These are people in a position to know more about the vaccines than most of us as they will have access to information not available to the general public.

The more recent reports that many care workers are leaving for other positions in the NHS, where vaccination has not yet been made compulsory, and for unrelated jobs at companies such as Amazon where they have been offered a 30% increase in pay and other incentives are confirmed by many sources, including official statements regarding the numbers of patients who my have died because treatment for serious conditions such as heart problems, cancer or diabetes have been delayed or cancelled due to staffing problems..

One care worker left their £9.30 an hour job to work as an Amazon warehouse picker, which pays £13.50 per hour and also offers a £1,000 joining bonus, according to the report. Is it any wonderr the care industry is on the brink of collapse.

In response to the mass exodus, the industry is now desperately calling on the government to end its mandatory vaccination policy for care workers, warning that a “catastrophe” is on the horizon. Comments relating to horses bolting and stable doors being closed are appropriate. The catastrophe has already happened, the SARS-COV2 pandemic is just the topping. For too long medical science has focused obsessively on extending the human lifespan, thus we now have a society top heavy with old people no longer able to live independently and this has spawned a whole industry based on providing care for these individuals, which is staffed by poorly paid workers.

Obviously trying to coerce these workers into accepting a deeply suspect experimental vaccination has pushed the industry into the abyss. Why should who people do a difficult job for inadequate reward have to put up with being forced to surrender their right to make their own choices on health related matters in order to keep jobs that clearly are not worth having. Virtue cannot be spent in the shops.

National Care Association executive chairman Nadra Ahmed, quoted by The Guardian, said that the National Health Service (NHS) will ultimately “have to pick up this mess” and called on the government to reconsider its policy,  public service union Unison declared that ministers “must immediately repeal ‘no jab, no job’ laws for care home staff in England to avert a staffing crisis that threatens to overwhelm the sector.”

Unison issued a dire warning that the government's “draconian” mandatory vaccination policy is “pushing thousands to the brink of quitting care work” and said the government is “sleepwalking into a disaster” by ensuring a massive shortage of staff during a pandemic.

The union also revealed that many care workers are being pressured into working up to sixty or in extreme cases seventy hours a week to cover staff shortages and “feel totally undervalued” and that “being bullied” into taking a vaccine they neither want not trust was “the last straw” for many in the industry.

The vacancies for care workers could total more than 170,000 people – with 70,000 being those who refuse the jab – after mandatory vaccination is implemented later this year, according to government estimates cited in the media.

During the first wave of the pandemic, elderly people in care homes made up roughly half of all Covid-19 deaths in the UK between March and September 2020. Nearly 30,000 residents died "with COVID while the numbers who died shortly after receiving the vaccine (my brother in law among them) is not available. Anyone who mentions deaths that may be connected to the vaccine is called a conspiracy theorist of course, though evidence of a massive cover up exists in stories like that of Pemberley House care home in Basingstoke, where in February this year 23 out of 70 residents died withing a few days of being vaccinated.

Government and health service press releases dismissed suggestions that the vaccine and the deaths might be linked and dismisses the deaths as a series of unfortunate coincidences and insisted there was no evidence of a link between the deaths and the vaccines. Other new from Basingstoke at that time included reports of large flocks of pigs flying over the town. Boggart Blog notes there is no evidence that such things did not happen. The thing about evidence is if you don't look fot it you will never find it.

"The New World Order Is Under Enormous Strain" Says Hillary Clinton's RINO Poodle

After Donald Trump's "art of the deal" failed at the last moment, after the President and Sen. Paul Ryan had led an effort to repeal Obamacare but were betrayed by Republicans in The House Of Representatives, some of whom wanted to pimp up Obamacare, while others wanted government out of the healthcare system altogether. The defeat appears to be a terminal setback for Trump's plan to reform US healthcare and as if that was not enough for one day, Senator John McCain, a man once hailed as a war hero but now more recognised as a lap dog of the Clinton Crime Syndicate and the global government movement renewed his calls for a return to a legacy neocon status quo that defined policy throughout the Bill Clinton / Dubya Bush / Barack Obama administrations. Speaking at the Brussels economic forum, McCain said that the world "cries out for American and European leadership" through the EU and NATO, and said that the EU and the US needed to develop "more cooperation, more connectivity".

In a "new world order under enormous strain" and in "the titanic struggle with forces of radicalism … we can't stand by and lament, we've got to be involved," said warmonger McCain, who chairs the armed services committee in the US Senate, according to the EU Observer.

"I trust the EU," he said, an opposite view from that of US president Trump who, showing his business acumen, said in January that the UK "was so smart in getting out" of the EU and that NATO was "obsolete". In spite of evidence that the Neocon / European Union / New World Order dream of a federal European superstate looks close to failure McCain echoed the line of war criminal, traitor, fraudster and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton that the EU was "one of the most important alliances" for the US and that the EU and NATO were "the best two sums in history", which have maintained peace for the last 70 years. This is bollocks of course; from the end of World War 2 to the collapse of the Soviet Union mutually asured destruction kept the peace and since then the US government and NATO have been in the business of starting wars, sponsoring terrorism and engineering regime change.

Further attacking Trump's worldview, McCan told his audience "we need to rely on NATO and have a NATO that adjusts to new challenges." He noted that "the EU has too many bureaucrats, not much bureaucracy," but added that "it's not the only place on earth with that problem." He said that he was "still wondering what the overall effect of Brexit will be" and that he did not know "if this is the beginning of a serious problem for the EU". McCain did not disagree, however, with Trump's demand that European countries increase their defense spending for NATO.

McCain also revealed he hasn’t met the President Donald Trump in person since he took office, and he urged Trump to reach out to his opponents—Democratic and otherwise, as Ronald Reagan did, if he wants to repeal Obamacare. “Do some outreach. Get to know some of these Democratic leaders,” he said. “You can find common ground.” At least that bit was not totally daft, but reaching out to the Democrat crazies these days is like putting your hand in a crocodile's mouth

McCain said he’d met Trump “some years ago” when he was a businessman, but had not met him since. McCain said he did speak “almost daily” to National Security Adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, however.

“He doesn’t seem to be that upset that he’s not talking to him,” said German Marshall Fund’s Derek Chollet, a former Obama Pentagon official. “He’s trying to run U.S. defense policy through Mattis and effectively ignore Trump.”

That said, McCain also said it was "too early" to pass judgment on his presidency, although his series of critical comments in recent weeks have demonstrated his growing skepticism about the Trump administration.

Epic Message By Denmark Teacher OBLITERATES Bernie Sanders’ Call For “Free Stuff”

Facebook memes usually annoy us and one that particularly annoys the Boggart Bloggers (who are all well travelled in Europe) is the one American liberals like to post about how Denmark, where education, healthcare and many other government provided services (all the things American liberals love, or at least love the idea of) are free, and everyone is happy to pay the astronomically high taxes.

It's bollocks of course. One thing all of us understand from time spent working in Scandinavia or holidays taken there, is that a Scandinavian would consider themselves guilty of unacceptable behaviour if they started to complain about their quality of life to a stranger, even one conducting an official survey. So in order to be polite they emphasise the positives of living in these supposed socialist utopias, and play down the negative side.

But some Scandinavians are starting to push back against this 'always look on the bright side' ethos. And a message posted by a Danish schoolteacher has become a meme of which we wholeheartedly approve:

In this meme-ifyed letter, a Danish teacher slams her native country’s horrendous tax-rates and excessive government dependency.

“I am a school teacher in Denmark making about $61,000/year. We also have free education,” she said. You already have a problem. How can you sustain paying teachers high wages when education is free? Moving on.
“You don’t have to pay for the doctor or the hospital, and students even get paid to learn. It all sounds so great, right? However, I forgot to mention that nothing is ever free — the minimum income tax in Denmark is 40 percent,” the teacher said.

She then goes on to mention the astronomical taxes and prices of various other things — like a 25 percent sales tax, 180 percent vehicle tax and the $10 gallon of gas

Gosh, and I complained when gas was $4 a gallon. Whoops.
“Denmark is the highest taxed nation in the world — taxed an average 80 percent on every dollar earned,” she said. “Danes have the highest personal debt in the world. Few will ever own a car or a home.”
Amazing. The government probably thinks you’re better off without the prospect of ever making a life for yourself. That’ll become a reality for Americans if we don’t wake up and shut down the “The Dragon Lady of Benghazi” and the old, self-avowed socialist.
The teacher starts to wrap up with the suicide rates in Denmark — which are strikingly high at an average 20.8 suicides per 100,000 people. The United States suicide rates are almost half that.

“Everyone wants the American dream. In Denmark’s neo-communism economy, no one will ever own or accomplish anything.” the letter concluded.

Every one of us was put on this earth to work, to utilize the talents that were instilled in us by God. This is why socialism is so wretched and evil — the gifts we were given are wasted due to a lasting dependency on a corrupt and abusive government.

Speaking as a Briton, I can say that while liberals and socialists here support Labour, the party of allegedly free stuff, in fact nothing is free, we pay for our healthcare and state pensions through a special tax called National Insurance and while income tax is considerably lower than in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, money is taxed every time it moves and many things the self righteous authoritarians of the political left consider 'luxuries' are through levies and duties put beyond the reach of people on ordinary incomes.
Another ongoing fallacy of the left is that the 'evil conservatives' are privatizing the NHS. The NHS has had private elements since it's inception 70 years ago. All G.Ps (General Practitioners - local doctors) are contracted to the NHS. All dentists the same. All the hospital's have to bring in agency nurses and doctors at great expense to fill gaps.Tony Blair and his 'New Labour' government made huge strides in privatizing the health service, expanding the range of services contracted out to the private sector. They also introduced PPP (Private - Public Partnership and PFI (Private Finance Initiatives) that built and service hospital's and schools so which means that health authorities etc have to pay rental and service fees even when they are no longer needed. This was done to keep them "off the books" and so remain within government borrowing limits.

The NHS is up to its eyeballs in debt and is unsustainable. Politically it is a sacred cow that cannot be put down.

Debt: The Developed World Has Lost Touch With Economic Reality

When I noticed a headline 0ver a story on the Zero Hedge financial website which proclaimed the US National Debt is three times higher than the published figure it attracted my attention not because this was news to me. If we are talking about Sovereign debt (the amount the government owes) then the figure 0f $65 trillion seems reasonable; the $18trillion figure usually quoted is 'The National Debt' the total of treasury bonds held by US citizens and businesses. And the total debt, when we bear in mind that the USA is a federation of fifty states, is several times higher than that, although estimated figures vary wildly.

Dave Walker, head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) under Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush, said, "If you add to that $18.5 trillion the unfunded civilian and military pensions and retiree healthcare, the additional underfunding for Social Security, the additional underfunding for Medicare, various commitments and contingencies that the federal government has, the real number is about $65 trillion rather than $18 trillion, and it’s growing exponentially as spending continues to outstrip revenue, adding to the interest liability on debts."

The former comptroller general, whose job is to ensure government spending is fiscally responsible, said the groing debt burdennational hampers the ability of government to carry out domestic and foreign policy obligations.

"If you don’t keep your economy strong, and that means to be able to generate more jobs and opportunities, you’re not going to be strong internationally with regard to foreign policy, you’re not going to be able to invest what you need to invest in national defense and homeland security, and ultimately you’re not going to be able to provide the kind of social safety net that we need in this country," he said.

Walker concluded that the American government have lost touch with reality when it comes to spending and called for Democrats and Republicans to put aside partisan politics to come together to fix the problem.

but the USA is not alone is suffering from a mounting, and unsustainable debt burden, the problem is endemic throughout the developed world not from political malfeasance which, by masking the problem rather than tackling it only serves to make the consequences worse.

UK's Real Debt
The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has calculated that the UK national debt is £4.8 trillion once state and public sector pension liabilities are included, or £78,000 for every person in the UK. Given that UK bonds have a coupon value (nominal interest rate) of 3.5% that means the government is paying £2780 (more than £50 a week for each of us)

The IEA raised its concerns, and called on the government to reveal the true debt level after the latest public finance data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the total debt, excluding bank bail-outs, is £816bn – itself a record high. However, these figures do not include the state's pension liabilities which contravention standard accounting practices.

IEA's director-general Mark Littlewood said: "The latest official national debt figure is seriously misleading. Looming in the background are pension liabilities. These should be moved to the forefront.

"The ONS should include these liabilities in their calculations. It is shocking enough to see official figures revealing a jump in national debt over the last year from the equivalent of 48pc of GDP to 56pc, but the grave reality is that our real national debt stands at 333pc of GDP."

IEA research fellow Nick Silver said the full figure, including the £1.2 trillion public sector pension liability and £2.7 trillion state pension liability, should be published either monthly or annually alongside the net debt data for reasons of transparency.

The ONS began publishing the full list of Britain's debts and liabilities in July this year.

Aileen Simkins, ONS director of operations on economic statistics, said the figures would be updated in September and that the ONS plans to compile and release them on an annual basis "to begin with".

In common with most European nations and the USA, the UK government has become adept at disguising important economic figures, although the task of making the economic data from the developed world look positive is akin to polishing a turd, the true depth of the disaster caused by mismanagement of financial systems because of pressure from the politically correct left has so far been masked sufficiently to maintain the status quo in politics.


France is in free fall

The euro zone’s second-largest economy is suffering more than any other member except for Greece from a shocking deterioration in competitiveness. And rather than acting to stop it, France's socialist government are admitting multitudes of unemployable, illiterate immigrants and paying them welfare benefits, implementing more and more restrictive labour laws, raising taxes (and especially tax on business profits) ever higher and doing the exact opposite of what is needed to turn around their country's economic decline.

Surprisingly, the yield on France’s ten-year government bonds stands at just 2%, just a few ticks above Germany’s (yield is the real interest rate on bonds rather than the 'coupon value' mentioned elsewhere). Such headline numbers suggest France is not in nearly as much trouble as the derisively titled "PIIGS" debtor nations, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain. So far, the trajectory of its debts and deficits isn’t as distressing as the figures for the PIIGs, or even the U.K. and the U.S.

That investor confidence stems, however, from France's assumed parity with Germany in the European integration project. As the EU nations move towards 'ever closer integration' the bankers reason, the German economic miracle will prop up the more developed economies in the Euozone.

France’s role in creating the euro and long term committment to uniting EU member stated into a single political entity enhances its aura of solidity. It was Socialist French President Francois Mitterrand who in 1989 persuaded Chancellor Helmut Kohl to back monetary union in exchange for France’s support for German reunification. In fact, France and Germany, along with the Netherlands, dramatized their commitment by effectively uniting the Franc and Deutschemark in a currency union that held their exchange rates in a narrow band, and heralded the euro’s birth in 1999. In the boom years of the mid-2000s, France virtually matched Germany as the twin growth engine of the thriving, 17-nation eurozone.

A deeper look shows that France is stuck in a perpetual economic crisis. Due to an unafforable welfare bill caused by mass immigration, offshoring of jobs and an ageing population, the french economy cannot meet its oblicagtios AND service its debts. The eurozone’s second-largest economy (2012 GDP: 2 trillion euros) is suffering more than any other member from a shocking deterioration in competitiveness. Put simply, France’s products — its cars, steel, clothing, electronics — for reasons mentioned above cost far too much to produce compared with competing goods both from Asia and its European neighbors, including not just Germany but even Spain and Italy.


Greece's Debt Crisis - The Daddy

Like most nations, the Greek government relies on borrowed money to balance its books. Most developed nations have been relying on borrowing to even out the bumps of the global downturn and using public spending to keep unemployment levels manageable. The recession made things harder to manage because tax revenues started falling just as welfare payments to unemployed people started to rise. It doesn't help that tax evasion is the cultural norm in Greece and pension rights are unusually generous.

Unfortunately, investors have lost confidence in the Greek political establishment so they have been demanding ever higher rates of interest to compensate for the risk that they might not get their money back. The higher its borrowing costs, the harder it is for the Greek economy to grow itself out of trouble.

Events began to spiral out of control when credit rating agencies downgraded Greek government debt to "junk" status, pushing the cost of borrowing so high that the country in effect had its credit cards cancelled, because it could not pay the monthly interest due on existing debt. That put the Greek government in the position of being unable to meet obligations such as wages and pensions because it could not sell bonds to fund its day to day activities. Fearing default (bankruptcy), Greece had to turn instead to the European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – the world's lender of last resort – for 120bn euros of emergency lending.

Political opposition in Germany and IMF fiscal conservatism in Washington dictated that the rescue package had austerity strings attached: a tough series of public sector cuts designed to reassure international investors that the government can become creditworthy again.

The problem with that is the traditional response to runaway debt, devaluation, is not available because Greece's membership of the single-currency European Monetary System (EMS) ties it to the German powerhouse economy. If one EMS member wanted to devalue they would all have to do the same. And that would be against Germany's interests. This means the Greek government cannot stimulate economic growth by devaluing its currency, and nor can it cut interest rates, which would help, because these are decided by the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. Instead, ever deeper public sector cuts and more ferocious austerity are almost certain to deepen the Greek recession, reducing tax revenues and making it even harder to service the debts in future.



What many investors fear is that the only way out of this vicious circle is for Greece to walk away from its existing debts and try to go it alone – potentially triggering a wave of similar defaults in other indebted European countries, and jeopardising the euro itself. In the meantime, what many Greeks fear is that the IMF option is just going to prolong the agony – and drive the country to the brink of political as well as economic collapse.


What constitutes 'Sovereign Debt'

Debt simply refers to the amount of money owed by the a government. This is the amount of unredeemed borrowing that has been built up over many years by many governments.

But use the word carefully. The most regularly quoted debt figure is actually the net debt of the UK; in other words, the total debt minus the government's liquid assets.

An easy way to compare debt levels across different countries is to express debt as a percentage of total economic output, or GDP, which is why you'll hear commentators regularly talk about the debt-to-GDP ratio. Obviously this has risen sharply since 2007. Beware though, GDP only measures money circulating around the economy. I buy £50 worth of goods from you, you replace your stock from the wholesalers and pay a repair bill with the £20 profit, the wholesale gives his warehouse man a £30 bonus and the handyman spends his £20 on new tools and my £50 has increased GDP by £150.

According to the Office for Budget Responsibility, the UK's debt will keep on rising for a number of years. So if anyone tries to tell you that UK debt (as the current government have recently) is falling, they are wrong. In the recent case the deficit is falling but that's a different thing.

The current budget deficit, or surplus, is the difference between the government's everyday expenses and its revenues; in other words, between what it spends and what it receives. In recent years, it has spent a lot more than it receives, so we are used to hearing about a budget deficit. The government thinks if they say it quickly we will be deceived into thinking deficit and debt are the same.

If a government spends less than it receives (stop laughing at the back), it would be running a budget surplus. This may seem a strange concept in today's economic climate, but between 1998 and 2001 we had four straight years of surplus. In fact, there was a surplus every year between 1947 and 1974.

Both the government and opposition are pledging to return the current budget to surplus in the next Parliament.


That seems straightforward. Problem is is, when politicians and commentators talk about the deficit, they are not actually talking about the budget deficit.

BorrowingBorrowing is... well, borrowing. Strictly speaking, borrowing and deficit (current budget) are not the same thing.

The two are linked, of course, as one covers the other, but the government doesn't just borrow money to pay back the deficit. It also borrows to invest.

The current budget covers everyday expenses - welfare payments, departmental costs etc. But the government also makes big investments, such as infrastructure projects, that are not included.

If the government is running a deficit, it may make investments on top of this, and will therefore need to borrow to cover both.

For example, in the calendar year 2007, the Labour government borrowed £37.7bn, of which £28.3bn was invested in big projects (the balance of £9.4bn represents the current budget deficit). Conversely, in 2013, the Conservative-led coalition borrowed £91.5bn, with just £23.7bn invested.

A neat, if rather simplistic, illustration of the different philosophies of the right and left in UK politics, some might say.

In the case of a surplus, the government may still need to borrow to cover its investments. This is why a current budget surplus does not automatically lead to a fall in overall debt, as borrowing to invest might be greater than the surplus. Equally, if government assets grow by more than the current budget deficit, then the deficit would not lead to an increase in overall debt.

Anyway, the important thing to remember is that, although there is a difference between the current budget deficit (or surplus) and government borrowing, for simplicity's sake commentators will usually quote borrowing figures when talking about the deficit. And you can see why, as they cover big infrastructure investment as well as everyday spending. After all, it is all borrowed money that needs to be paid back, and that adds to the overall pile of debt.
