The Death Of Privacy - But Have We Ourselves Murdered It?

The News this week has thrown up some interesting questions. While the main headlines have concerned immigration,  the economy, climate change, Trump, Labour MP plotting against their leader, the meltdown at the BBC, and the failure of policing there have been many second layer stories about privacy, or the lack of it in the digital era. UK citizens health records released on the dark web, Prince Harry and not-Princess Meghan's latest whine, the publication of the Jeffrey Epstein files across the pond, and the usual plethora of reports about surveillance, data mining by Big Tech corporations and abuse of users rights on the world wide web.

It seems there is now little distinction between the public and private world. We have allowed a diluted concept of privacy in which those in authority decide what civil rights and liberties rights we have rather than our right to privacy being the default position. This new privacy lite serves not as protection from authority and public scrutiny, and as a sanctuary for the inner self and a shelter for intimacy — but merely as data protection.

Through it all, we blame the convenient scapegoat of the moment: the internet. But this gets the timeline wrong. By the time social media arrived, we were already living in a post-private world. The digital revolution simply gave us more efficient tools to do what we were already doing: performing our identities, seeking validation through revelation, and treating intimacy as a public commodity. Nobody forced us to hand our data to Microsoft, Meta or Google, were nudged into it. But nudging (propaganda) and manipulation of information by Artificial Intelligence are the tools of authoritarianism.
 

This matters, because if we fail to understand the problem, we’ll never find the cure. All the digital detoxing and platform regulation in the world will never restore what was lost long before the internet became a publicly accessible medium. Far better, then, to face up to how we voluntarily dismantled the idea that some things should remain hidden, that mystery and restraint might be virtues, and that not everything must be shared.
 

The business models of technology giants like Google and Facebook, which base their revenue streams on the sale of data which they collect without consent (i.e. steal,) clearly violate people’s privacy, as does total surveillance by state or business agents. But we would be kidding ourselves if we thought that technology alone has undermined the moral status of privacy and private life. The wecams through which internet 'influencers' invite us into their world and wannabes seek the unhealthy attentions of obessives are the logical endpoint of a cultural revolution that began decades earlier. 

Not everybody will share the scepticism of the Boggart Bloggers about “mass media” communications, broadcast news and the majority of news comment and opinion – as good for nothing beyond cheap entertainment that panders to the lowest common denominator while performative legislation by political groups, for example the UK Online Safety Bill, will suppress free speech (the purpose for which it was really intenden,) while doing nothing to make the www safer for users.

Many of us had already given up on the BBC before the extent of its far left and globalist bias was revealed and major print news publications such as the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian as amusement-fodder as much as anything. Although they do offer occasional insights into the passions driving our fellow humans.

As founder and editor of the Boggrt Blog titles and a retired computer professional whose experience goes back to  the days of punched cards and huge piles of printed output I, like many of my contemporaries marvel at how the potential of communications technology to destroy our privacy developed over the past fifty years has been abused, and the misuses it has been put to by the billionaire psychopaths of Silicon Valley, the scams, the junk phone calls (which would not be possible had the digitised telephone system not been integrated with the internet,) the data mining, propaganda and politically motivated lies.

It is hard to dis agree with the statement that 99.9% of ‘internet-based communications’ is waffle, clickbait, advertising, porn or propaganda. But over the years, we  learn how to filter most of that out and extract the gems that lie buried in the shite.

As in life we must all, if we want to save the useful internet, take responsibility ourselves instead of leaving the task of cleaning up to others.

Digital ID - High Tech Cattle Tags For Humans

 

Sir Keir Wanker and the rest of  the current Labour Government, egged on by Tony Blair and associates, have exhumed the remains of Digital ID system and breathed life into the corpse by claiming such a system of social control will, by persuading law abiding citizens to surrender their rights and civil liberties, somehow solve the crisis of illegal immigration via a ‘BritCard’ – a way of tracking via a smartphone app, the activities of UK citizens, which all residents will be required by law to carrry if they wish to access government controlled systems and services.

An online petition to Parliament has reached 2.7 million signatures within days of being launched, and opponents of the scheme are hammering home the point that such a system would destoy the concept of privacy, become a threat to free speech and pave the way for a system of social credit scores based on the Chinese Communist Party's favourite tool of social control.

We’ve heard it all before. This is a gentle reminder that in 2021, the then Prime Minister Boris Johnson along with his government and opposition cheerleaders attempted to roll out ‘vaccine passports’ and mandatory vaccinations to deal with Covid. However, they soon realised this wasn’t a popular policy with NHS staff and the wider public, and after fierce pushback both policies were effectively dropped in early 2022 – after losing 40,000 care workers resigned from their jobs rather than accept being tracked 24  hours a day, an exodus which has had enormous consequences for Britain.

One might think that a group of intelligent (allegedly) people would learn from this and other similar episodes that the population will not readily accept digital authoritarianism, but the people we speak of are politicians and scientists, the former criminally incompetent and the latter (with a few exceptions,) certifiably insane.

Digital ID cards will do nothing to quell the flow of illegal immigrants and the criminal gangs that smuggle them into the country. We already have National Insurance numbers, most have driving licences, and many have passports. Then there's the Electoral Roll and NHS number, do any of them keep us 'safer'? Do we feel more 'protected' for their existence? Not really. Such things just 'allow' us to exist - at a cost.

And to gain access to the dubious benefits of a Digital ID system you will need a cellphone of sorts - a specific sort. And forcing us all to have a cellphone would ease the abolition of real money and the creation of a cashless society.

I  know several people who have no cellphone and no computer of any kind.  Others may have a basic phone but no computer. One runs a viable busines that uses cash, and pays suppliers with cheques. Another person, a friend, is a freelance cleaner (she's quite well off but is one of those weird people - her own description - who absolutely loves cleaning.) Her cellphone is a Nokia 8210, good but no apps, She will accept card payments or bank transfers but a few years ago threw her smartphone away because it annoyed her so much.

This lady, from a farming family, has another job she loves. One day a week she works at the local cattle market. The cattle that go through the auction ring are all tagged with RFID chips. Cattle tags are a legal requirement as cattle cannot speak for themselves the way humans do. And luckily for them they cannot carry smartphones so their movements can only be traced when a human equipped with a special device reads their tag. 

Digital ID is a way of tagging us, but compelling us by law to carry our phones at all timmes, and by using a smartphone app our identification data can be tied to banl accounts, point of sale systems in shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and pubs while sensors in public spaces which reord our presence and are linked to the GPS system follow our every move and by using proximity scanners can even identify with whom we speak. The dangers of over reliance on technology are now great, but if enough of us reject these obsessively controlling politicians, refusing to play their deadly games, voting against them and opposing whenever and wherever we can, this insanity can be defeated.

Is Artificial Intelligence A Threat To Privacy And Free Speech?

 Businesses, government organisations and even our humble laptop and desktop computers at home are being under constant attack, not by hackers and cybercriminals but by Search Engine Technology Operators, Social Media Networks and online marketplaces. So what’s the last thing we need corportions like Microsoft, Alphabel and Apple to do? Actually it is the very thing they are doing, which is to make the attacks easier, and park the most sensitive data in all levels of systems in front of the house with a “take what you want” sign.

As companies and governments become increasingly obsessed with artificial intelligence (AI), they are not just creating back doors into software and operating systems, flinging open all the doors that really should be locked very tight – and in many cases, they don’t even know they’ve done it.

To illustrate the potential damage AI data mining could do, security expert Michael Bargury uses Microsoft’s own demonstration site fo their "software as a service" product" Microsoft 365. He easily makes changes to the business’s bank details; staff are oblivious to the change.

Bargury, chief technology officer of Tel Aviv-based security firm Zenity, is one of the leading experts in exploring how business Artificial Intelligence can be used for mischief.

This kind of attack exploits one of AI’s key selling points to business: its ability to automate repetitive tasks. Previously, getting a hack to work required knowledge of a scripting language to run Operating Sytem commands. Now, anyone can create a bot with a couple of clicks, and it’s turning hacking into a public sport.

In the past, many hacks also required hundreds of hours of social engineering and a bit of behavioural science knowhow to nudge individuals into clicking on the vital link. But with Microsoft’s Copilot and other business AI bots, all provided for the user's 'convenience' and to make computers more user friendly, people with relitavely low leves of tech skill can simply say a set of words and open a Pandora’s box. Bargury calls it “promptware”.

The typical Fortune 500 company already runs around 3,000 Copilot AI bots, and some 63pc of private business chatbots can be operated by the public. “All of the defaults are insecure,” an astonished Bargury discovered.

Things are about to get much worse.

While Microsoft has changed the defaults, the underlying problem is not fixable, which is that AI can’t distinguish between data and computer instructions. I may send you a one-line message wishing you happy birthday that contains hidden hacking instructions – and the AI will obliviously let it happen. It is what I have always called 'The stupidity of Artificial Intelligence.' To put it simply a modern computer can parse millions of words in alphanumeric text in seconds but have no inkling of what anything in ll that content means. The computer is not intelligent, it hs no mind, no consciousness, no moral compass, it merely compares and matches strings of binary data (not 'little ones and zeros' as many younger generation computer pros will unhelpfully explain, but miniscule negative or positive charcges of static electricity.

Microsoft claims it is constantly revising the “guard rails” on its large language models, but Bargury isn’t impressed. “Guard rails aren’t enough because it’s not a solvable problem,” he says.

Security has always been a serious inbuilt fault of Microsoft products. They default to 'open-ness'. The famous hacker Gary McKinnon got himself into trouble because he searched for Microsoft PCs where the default administrator account (name: Administrator, password: none) was not changed on public networks, including NASA and the military. He advised people that the easiest way to protect themselves from intrusion was just to rename the admin account and add a password!

The truth is Microsoft did not want people protecting their own system because that could make access to systems for puroses Microsoft did not publicly comment on more difficult. But this fact alone speaks volumes about how MIcrosoft views security and privacy. 

The idea of the new Recall feature defaulting to being on as opposed to being turned off is, imho, immoral and arguably even criminal. Microsoft claim, of course, that the feature is not a threat to privacy but a tool to help users keep track of their activity, but it is actually a surveillance tool, and the biggest customers for data scraped up by this tool are governments.

I am already aware of how to turn it off even though I will not be upgrading to a Windows 11 PC for some years. I have only recently moved on to Windws 10, like many other ol school computer pros I like to be well behind the bleeding edge. 

It should be a subject of legislation that all devices, be they a humble toaster, or work computer must come locked down during installation and that the user is forced during install to choose passwords and has to take active measures to open up devices to networks and AI rather than research how to lock them down. 

The biggest problem with AI (apat from its innate stupidity) is that it breaks down boundaries we have traditionally and for very good reasons, maintained in the offline world, where information was privileged, and was only shared on a need-to-know basis. Now we’re making everything accessible to anyone and anything that has a network interface.

Rather like The Suckophant, a cartoon monster in the Beatles’ movie Yellow Submarine, AI devours all the other monsters, then its creator (the Beatles,) and eventually the screen itself. In summary, it’s a lethal combination: we’re allowing far more people to do more stupid things far more easily, while exposing far more private information to the bad people.

TECH EXPERTS CALL FOR A BAN ON FACIAL RECOGNITION SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGY.

There has been a huge increase in the use of facial recognition technology by police and businesses in the UK despite independent studies raising concerns about human rights violations, anddiscrimination, and numerous incidences of entirely innocent people being identified as criminals or people of interest in connection with crimes.

Despite this, the UK Government, sticking with its recent cross - party policy of following the bad science is still pushing for greater use of facial recognition surveillance technology in policing and surveilance in supermarkets, busy shopping areas, transport hubs amd motorway service areas as well as public buildings. A call for urgent action to stop governments and private companies using this surveillance technology has been published by human rights groups and technology watchdog organisations across the world.

Signed by over 60 experts and 120 civil society organisations working across six continents, the call for a halt to the use of facial recognition comes at a time when governments worldwide are considering whether to prohibit or permit the use of live facial recognition, according to the UK Big Brother Watch group (BBW).

The BBW “works to roll back the surveillance state and protect the rights of everyone in the UK to be free from unfair intrusion” according to their Director, Silkie Carlo.”

In a joint statement warning of serious concerns about the human rights and discriminatory impacts of facial recognition surveillance, the signatories cite an insufficient evidence base, lack of safeguards, legal protections and democratic mandates to justify the use of the controversial technology, the spread of which would spell the end of personal privacy.

We should remember that cameras can only record the light reflected by any objects including a face and there are numerous variables at work in any live situation that can affect the image made by the camera when it digitizes that reflected light. Thus for people who are up to no good, disguisings ones appearance from facial recognition technology is as easy as breaking wind.

 Whilst European Parliament recently endorsed a blanket ban on police using AI-powered facial recognition surveillance under the AI Act and several US cities have banned the technology, the UK’s approach has been described as an “outlier”. In the UK, uses of live facial recognition surveillance have recently increased in the retail sector and some police forces.

Live facial recognition surveillance, whereby certain dimensions of individuals’ faces are biometrically scanned by cameras (picture, top) in real-time and compared against a database, has been used in recent months at the Coronation of King Charles II, sports events, concerts and central London. Research by Big Brother Watch, one of the groups that co-ordinated the international statement, found that over 89% of UK police facial recognition alerts to date have wrongly identified members of the public as people of interest.

Legal Complaint Filed Against Food Retailer’s “Orwellian” Facial Recognition Surveillance System

 A report last week that a major UK retailer, The Co - Operative Society (Co - OP) was planning to install in - store surveillance systems with facial recognition capabilities, supposedly to reduce shoplifting by repeat offenders, caused quite a stir in the media and the privacy protection community. Normally this blog is all over such stories, but in this case with two retired techies on the team we decided to await developments because Ian and Xavier boith know how inefficient and easily evaded such technologies are.

However rivacy right campaign group Big Brother Watch have not reacted with similar sang froid. BBW have denounced the scheme which would capture and store biometric scans of “thousands of shoppers” is “unlawful” and “Orwellian in the extreme.”

The privacy rights group issued a statement last Tuesday announcing they had filed a legal complaint with the Information Commissioner alleging that Southern Co-operative’s use of live facial recognition cameras in its supermarkets is “unlawful”. The legal filing, sent via the group’s lawyers from data rights firm AWO, claims that the use of the biometric cameras “is infringing the data rights of a significant number of UK citizens and subjects”.

Southern Co-operative supermarkets have been using facial recognition software with surveillance cameras from Chinese state-owned firm Hikvision in trials. Hikvision also provides cameras for the Chinese Communist Party’s concentration camps in Xinjiang where critics and civil rights campaigners have associated the technology with serious security flaws. The firm is banned from operating in the US and a group of senior parliamentarians recently urged the Government to ban the cameras from the UK.

Big Brother Watch is a UK civil liberties campaign group fighting for a free future. “We’re determined to reclaim our privacy and defend freedoms at this time of enormous technological change. And we fight to win,” their website states.

Ethical Consumer reported in January 2021, that the controversial surveillance technology was being trialled in selected Southern Co-operative stores since mid-2019 despite the use of facial recognition by police forces being deemed controversial with the Court of Appeal ruling parts of its use to be unlawful in August 2020. Nonetheless advocated of facial recognition, backed by some of the biggest Silicon Valley tech conglomerates have been lobbying extensively for its introduction on a broad scale. Use of facial recognition has been creeping into the private sector and the true scale of its  current deployment remains unknown.

While shops with facial-recognition softwate running on the computers their cameras a linked to must  display signs informing customers of their operation, no general public announcement was made before the Co - Op groups trials started. the issue was only brought to light following the publication of a case study on the website of Facewatch, a specialist provider of facial recognition systems and surveillance.

As early as 2020 leaks about the rollout left privacy advocates questioning whether the shops could fully justify the use of the technology under data protection laws. They also worried about creeping surveillance and the ability of police forces to access private systems.

Digital Authoritarianism: AI Surveillance Signals The Death Of Privacy

Nothing is private.

We teeter on the cusp of a cultural, technological and societal revolution the likes of which have never been seen before.

While the political Left and Right continue to make abortion the face of the debate over the right to privacy in America, the government and its corporate partners, aided by rapidly advancing technology, are reshaping the world into one in which there is no privacy at all.

Nothing that was once private is protected.

We have not even begun to register the fallout from the tsunami bearing down upon us in the form of AI (artificial intelligence) surveillance, and yet it is already re-orienting our world into one in which freedom is almost unrecognizable.

AI surveillance harnesses the power of artificial intelligence and widespread surveillance technology to do what the police state lacks the manpower and resources to do efficiently or effectively: be everywhere, watch everyone and everything, monitor, identify, catalogue, cross-check, cross-reference, and collude.

Everything that was once private is now up for grabs to the right buyer.

Governments and corporations alike have heedlessly adopted AI surveillance technologies without any care or concern for their long-term impact on the rights of the citizenry.

As a special report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace warns, “A growing number of states are deploying advanced AI surveillance tools to monitor, track, and surveil citizens to accomplish a range of policy objectives—some lawful, others that violate human rights, and many of which fall into a murky middle ground.”

Indeed, with every new AI surveillance technology that is adopted and deployed without any regard for privacy, Fourth Amendment rights and due process, the rights of the citizenry are being marginalized, undermined and eviscerated.

Cue the rise of digital authoritarianism.

Digital authoritarianism, as the Center for Strategic and International Studies cautions, involves the use of information technology to surveil, repress, and manipulate the populace, endangering human rights and civil liberties, and co-opting and corrupting the foundational principles of democratic and open societies, “including freedom of movement, the right to speak freely and express political dissent, and the right to personal privacy, online and off.”

The seeds of digital authoritarianism were planted in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, with the passage of the USA Patriot Act. German politician calls on facebook to abolish free speech
A German politician has given the clearest indication yet that the political elites of the free world are ideologically much closer to Adolf Hitler's National Socialists than the social liberalism they claim to support. Free speech is the basis of all liberal democracy. Heiko Maas, the German justice minister has has written to the Facebook it removes “xenophobic and racist” anti-migrant posts from its website and apps., has written to the company to demand an urgent review of its policy over hate messages.

Beware the dangers of a cashless society

As the country celebrates tradition and prepares for change, one major shift is closer than ever – our move towards becoming a cashless society. It is hard to imagine money without the Queen’s profile proudly embossed, defining our Elizabethan generation in a centuries-old British tradition, but the monarch’s face is fast disappearing from our pockets.

Many of us rarely use cash now at all and increasingly, shops, cafes and transport providers refuse to accept it. Card and contactless payments already outweigh cash payments in the UK. Our shift towards digital payments was further catalysed by Covid – even PIN-pads were deemed risky and life became, in all senses, contactless. But this also signalled an opportunity for the tech industry. Now, Mastercard is urging people to link their bank accounts to their facial biometrics in order to “smile to pay”.

Creepy? Yes, but it all seems so convenient. Card companies give promises of “frictionless” transactions and “speeding” through checkouts. You don’t need to carry cash or worry about theft – and increasingly, you don’t need to carry a card or even remember a PIN. Digital banking apps also allow you to monitor every penny you spend. But is it only monitoring what you spend? 

The move towards a cashless society creates the inevitability of more granular surveillance and less privacy than ever before. When everywhere you travel, everywhere you eat, everything you buy and every service you pay for is digitally recorded, your behaviour can be more easily scrutinised whether by your bank, your spouse or the state. In a system of total financial surveillance, fraud, financial crime, black markets and tax evasion could theoretically be eliminated. As such, HMRC has already drastically ramped up its digital surveillance operation. HMRC’s big data “Connect” system collects over a billion items of data from 30 sources – including tax returns, interest on bank accounts, online marketplaces and social media – to conduct a matching analysis of 800 million monthly credit and debit card payments. Yet as part of this, HMRC unlawfully collected over 5 million biometric voiceprints via its helpline – it was only after Big Brother Watch raised a complaint with the data watchdog that the Department was ordered to delete them.
