Steel & plastic turbines now blight every landscape & seascape on earth. Wind energy is not free & it's not cheap. Just one costs $2.6 to $4 million & stands 240m high. Complex gears usually can't match frequencies & can break down within 7 years. All are replaced in 20 years.
Learning from history and from our own experience is usually reckoned a sign of wisdom. Strangely, that appears not to be the view of those engaged in the Net Zero industry and particularly the bunch of ecoloons at Carbon Brief. These weirdie - beardies have published an absolutely risible prediction that renewable generation such as offshore wind will be vastly cheaper than gas generation in the late 2020s.
Carbon Brief’s authors built their claim on bids submitted by offshore wind farms to the U.K. Government’s auction of Contracts for Difference (CfD), which were announced in July 2022. The paper claims that the average price of £48 per megawatt hour (MWh) in today’s money is “nine times cheaper” than the £446 per MWh current cost of running gas-fired power stations. For clarity and the edification of those who upvoted the Carbon Brief article, the actual cost of running gas-fired power stations in April 2020 was less than £25 per MWh. Carbon Brief's figure was inflated by adding in the cost of buying carbon dioxide permits. Green is only cheaper than gas because of virtue signalling taxes on politically incorrect energy.
In other words, the CfD bids from wind farm operators were nearly double the recent cost of gas-fired generation and offshore wind costs have risen so much while gas prices have fallen further that wind turbine operators are pulling out of new build projects as fast as they can. Experience tells us that extremely high prices often come down sharply when the crisis passes and that is exactly what happened as the world came to terms with the impact of the war in Ukraine.
An increase in the price they could charge would give fossil fuel companies
more money plus an incentive to invest in increased production which
would sooner or later lead to more supply and lower prices. Unfortunately current policies grossly distort the market in favour of wind generated electricity.
Windfall taxes on oil and
gas firms reduce the amount that can be invested in new wells or
developing new oil/gas fields.
More importantly governments in Europe and the U.S. are generally
becoming less hostile to fossil fuels as failures of The Science make the achievement of Net Zero less likely. This makes wind turbine operators reluctant to invest large sums of money in developing new sites as thy cannot be sure that if subsidies for renewables are withdrawn and taxes or other penalties on gas sourced electricity are reduced they will not be able to sell their output at an acceptable profit margin.
This suggests that the past may not be a reliable guide to the future as the market has been
fundamentally distorted by government intervention. None of this is meant to address the viability of switching to 'sustainable' power sources instead
it seems obvious that governments should stop such interference in the market then the most economically sustainable solution can go ahead unconstrained by political or ideoligical considerations .
Perhaps the Carbon Brief authors have never studied the charts of oil and gas prices since 1970. They should, and so should those who rely on their reports.
