The secret of freedom lies in educating people, whereas the secret of tyranny is in keeping them ignorant. - Maximilien Robespierre.

Google’s dominance of advertising is being exposed

An investigation by the competition regulator goes to the heart of how Google's parent company Alphabet makes its astonishing fortune

When the internet burst into the public consciousness in the mid 1990s after being the exclusive territory of computer professionals and nerds for a decade, foremost among the early adopters of the simplified internetworking technology known as theWorld Wide Web were libertarian idealists. These people believed the new electronic publisjing and communications medium would open a universe of information to anybody who had access to a computer, modem and phone line. All the information in the world would be at the fingertips of every human being. And for those who wanted to participate by publishing their thoughts, opinions and ideas which some of their friends might not understan and their bosses might take exception too, the internet offered the bonus of anonimity.

Form a business point of view a classic cartoon in The New Yorker magazine sumed up the equalising nature of this new medium in the caption: If nobody on the internet knows you’re a dog,  nobody would know you were a small business either, especially one that was punching above its weight.

This promised to make the built - in advantages of the muli - national corporation, the globally recognised brand and the mega - factory redundant. A new business environment of dynamism and competition awaited us all – a world of free information, level playing fields and purer , less manipulated markets.

************

We’re a little wiser today, and so are competition regulators. Ten days ago, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority opened an investigation into an esoteric practice in digital advertising – “header bidding” – that only a few insiders ever really understood. But don’t let that fool you. The probe goes to the heart of how Google makes its astonishing fortune.

The legal discovery work of mining millions of corporate emails and documents was undertaken by the state attorney general office in Texas, and culminated in a lawsuit filed by the state in December 2020.

But the details only came out in dribs and drabs until the full unredacted document was disclosed this January. The subsequent outcry left the CMA little choice but to join in, and Brussels launched its own probe the same day as the CMA.

Digital advertising is intimidatingly complex, but conceptually it remains fairly straightforward. Publishers of a newspaper or an app or a game have a blank space to sell. For their part, businesses with products or services want to reach a potential audience, and to do so as cheaply and effectively as possible.

The traditional method in the old physical world saw newspapers negotiating a price for the space directly with agencies representing big brands. But with electronic ads, there is an opportunity for an efficient electronic marketplace. An intermediary sits between buyer and seller, and this is where we find Google, which dominates the sector. By its own calculations, 84pc of publishers worldwide, and 99pc of large US publishers use Google ad services to fill their digital slots.

Google owes its dominance to the way it can control information – with a presence on both sides of the digital ad platform, buying and selling, as well as sitting pretty in the middle. In one of the most notorious emails unearthed by Texas investigators, one Google staffer explains: “the analogy would be if Goldman or Citibank owned the New York Stock Exchange”.

But were the publishers getting good value? Were the ad buyers? It was a mystery, and they couldn’t accurately say, because the digital ad auction manipulations were so complex and obscure. As another senior Google employee explained in an internal communication: “charging non-transparently on both sides” gave Google “some flexibility to react and counteract market changes.” No wonder the casino always appeared to win.

That was until 2014, when publishers devised a clever wheeze that allowed them to compare the performance of Google’s ad exchange with other rival ad exchanges. This was via a technique called header bidding – because some code was inserted in the header of a web page – and for the first time the market could function as it should, and reveal the true value of the digital ad slots. Each side could now get more precious information too.

The results were astonishing. Publishers saw ad revenues rise by between 30pc and 70pc, the Texas lawsuit alleges. Advertisers liked it too, since the smaller, scrappier rival ad exchanges charged lower fees than Google. Internally Google acknowledged how much all this hurt: rather than taking 20pc, a figure mentioned internally, one manager predicted “margins will stabilise at around 5pc”.

When Google’s rival Facebook, number two in the ad market, jumped on to the header bidding bandwagon, it really changed things. The lawsuit says that Google devised a secret agreement with Facebook, codenamed "Jedi Blue" that gave its biggest competitor huge perks. It also tried to lure publishers on to a mobile platform called AMP, where header bidding wasn’t possible.

Google denies the claims, arguing that the deal was a "publicly documented, procompetitive agreement". The alleged collusion between Meta (Facebook) and Alphabet (Google) is what makes this lawsuit so explosive: the lawsuit claims that two leading participants in the market colluded, acting like a buying cartel. Incredibly, we are told that Google could guarantee how many bids Facebook would win, down to a tenth of a percentage point.

The 242-page Texas lawsuit reveals a cat and mouse game played out over several years, but consistent themes emerge. As the piggy in the middle, Google was making life more difficult for the buyer and seller, obscuring processes, and preserving their own margin. Google denies the Texas allegations were anti-competitive, and argues that header bidding continues to grow.

But publishers now wonder aloud how much healthier the media landscape would look today if the ad business had been more competitive. Perhaps more might have gone to keep revenue-starved local media alive, for example. Last year Google’s owner Alphabet reported revenue of $257bn.

At the end of the day, while financial and commodities exchanges are regulated, the digital ad exchanges are not. They might have been, but a decade ago President Obama shut down an FTC probe which would have obliged exchange owners to be transparent with information. Regulating them wisely today, so a market can grow, is one of our regulators' biggest challenges.

Ukraine Descends Further Into A Totalitarian Dictatorship

Ukraine is taking the “conflict” with Russia as an excuse to further enslave those living within its borders. Not only are those living under Volodymyr Zelensky’s rule subjected to martial law and a social credit system, but the master has also now banned 11 political parties and seized control of all media.

Zelensky continues to plead for “freedom” and “democracy” (even though the two are far from the same things) for the slaves to see, but yet, his first tendency has been to become an authoritarian master hellbent on controlling others.

As Axios reported, the list of parties now banned include Platform For Life, Shariy Party, Nashi, Opposition Bloc, Left Opposition, Union of Left Forces, State, Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine, Socialist Party of Ukraine, Socialists Party, and Volodymyr Saldo Bloc.

In a speech that was posted online, the Ukrainian president said his country’s National Security and Defense Council agreed to his banning the activities of those parties, The Hill reported.

“Given the full-scale war waged by the Russian Federation and the ties of some political structures with this state, any activity of a number of political parties during the martial law is suspended,” Zelenskyy noted in his address to the country. “Any activity of politicians aimed at splitting or collaborating will not succeed,” Zelenskyy added. “But it will get a tough response.” ... The Sceptics Are Starting To be Heard By The Herd On The Origins Of Ukraines Conflict

We who write Boggart Blog in all its guises have sometimes felt as though we were shouting into the great void as we presented the results of our research, investigations and long term reporting (since 2014 and even further back than that,) on how the attempts of the Western Alliance (USA, NATO and the European Union,) to recruit Ukraine as a member of the anti - Moscow club could only result in conflict, economic catastrophe and probably to eventual war.

We do not feel at all please with ourselves for predicting that something like the current crisis was the inevitable outcome of expanding NATO eastward and ever closer to Russia's borders and thus gain the ability to place NATO troops and weaponry on the border was not going to be acceptable to Moscow. If you are familiar with recent history consider America's reaction when communist Cuba invited Russia to install missiles on the Caribbean island only a hundred and fifty miles from the US coast in the early 1960s.

America,  quite rightly, threatened serious consequences and Russia backed down. Imagine how Britain would react if Ireland tried to join the Russian Federation or France if Andorra was annexed by China. The USA, NATO allies and the European Union member states must accept their share of responsibility for the current conflict. There were several options other than full NATO membership for Ukraine, a United Nations backed guarantee of neutrality for Ukraine was the most favourable to all sides.

So it is gratifying to us to see that more and more sober, intelligent voices in alt_media are calling out the hysterical demonisation of Russia and its leader Vladimir Putin and arguing that armed conflict, with all the attendant suffering and pointless deaths could have been avoided had the western alliance not beein more intertested in effecting regime change in Russia than it was in creating conditions for peaceful co - existence between Russia and Ukraine.

Below is an extract of one more excellent example of how the 'conspiravy theorists' of alt - media have once again beaten the mainstream media boy and girl reporters with their little degrees in media studies.

The US is Culpable in Today's Ukraine Crisis

by The Space Worm

The US is Culpable in Today's Ukraine Crisis

How the incessant neo-conservative urge to reshape foreign nations in the Western image has brought us to the brink of World War.

Many know this story, but I’d like to summarize it as succinctly as possible, using only primary and establishment media sources in hopes that this article may be persuasive and shareable to friends/family of all politics. The goal is not to distract from Ukrainian suffering but to inform US citizens of how their leaders often engage in harmful foreign policy so that we may refrain from electing such leaders in the future.

Brief Background

Throughout 2012 and most of 2013, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych had been in negotiations with the European Union on the terms of a political/trade agreement involving a sizeable loan, lowering of tariffs, and a goal to “promote gradual convergence on foreign and security matters with the aim of Ukraine's ever-deeper involvement in the European security area” (direct quote from the agreement). Putin has stated, numerous times over several decades, his concerns about Western military forces creeping closer to Russia’s border. The Ukranians asked for $160 billion to offset trade restrictions that Russia would likely implement as a result of the deal. The EU could only offer $828 million. Russia then offered Ukraine a $15 billion loan and to cut Russian natural gas prices by almost a third. Yanukovych canceled negotiations with the EU and accepted Putin’s offer. Considering the Russian loan was nearly 20 times greater than the EU loan and the agreement eliminated the possibility of Russian sanctions while leaving EU relations largely unchanged, this was a rational decision by Yanukovych. To quote Reuters, “the unwillingness of the EU and International Monetary Fund to be flexible in their demands of Ukraine also had an effect, making them less attractive partners.”

Results of 2010 election in which Yanukovych (written Janukovych) won by a slim majority almost entirely on the South-Eastern vote - Ukrainian political division falls on geographic lines.

The decision to cancel the EU agreement, which was not a unilateral decision by Yanukovych but a valid vote by Ukranian Parliament, was met with protests in the North-Western Capital Kiev, led by prominent members of Yanukovych’s opposition party, which quickly turned violent. Western Ukranians were understandably upset after the one-year-long negotiations fell through. ... Continue reading >>>

It Is Time We Started To Question The “Putin versus Civilisation” Narrative

Since the Russian 'invasion' in late February, Ukraine has pushed COVID into second place in terms of the  level of coverage given by both the mainstream and alternative media. The difference is that while there has beeen some diversity in alternative media reporting, mainstream media have stuck faithfully to the official propaganda narrative of Russia bad, Ukraine good. WUkrar propaganda follows a well established patters and as the graphic shows, the Ukraine / Russia propaganda is a copy book example:

Conspiracy Theories abound over the true situation inside Ukraine, the true reason behind the invasion and the a mctualotives and goals of Russian President and surrogate Bond villain Vladimir Putin.

Among the crackpot opinions and fake news however, a theory that has some credibility posits that Putin is some kind of saviour, and that his moves in Ukraine represent an attack against the Western, globalist elite and NATO / US expansionism.

In fact, on the available evidence it is becoming more apparent that the goal of the western alliance in provoking and escalating this conflict (by arming Ukraine's military withy high tech weapons,) is to achieve regime change in moscow as they did in Kiev back in 2014.

Recently, Victoria Nuland, the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, admitted that Ukraine houses US government funded and controlled “biological research facilities” and expressed concern that Russia would commandeer them.

Anyone else think this story seems similar to the whole Covid lab-leak hypothesis?

In both cases, the theories have followed a similar life-cycle:

  1. Originated at the beginning of the event but exact origins unclear
  2. Widely promoted in alternative circles
  3. Heavily censored on social media and denounced by fact-checkers
  4. Finally accepted into the mainstream narrative

Moscow’s actions in Ukraine and the western alliance's anti - Russia propaganda  have exposed a deep-seated latent racism toward the Russian people that a number of Western institutions – not least Hollywood and the legacy media – have been cultivating for far too long. Demonization of Putin is one thing, demonization of the Russian people is another, and a racist thing at that.

Of all the major military interventions by the western alliance (chiefly USA, UK and France - the FUKUS axis,) undertaken since the turn of the century, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Yemen, to name but some of the broken places left behind after the axis had taken it upon themselves to spread democracy and western values around the world, it is strange that Russia’s “special operation” in Ukraine stands apart for a very peculiar reason, and that is the ugly, irrational hatred of Russia and its people generated by mainstream media coverage of the conflict.

Stories circulating online tell of Russians enduring discrimination in Western capitals – from famed conductor Valery Gergiev losing his job at the Munich Philharmonic, to children of Russian families living abroad being bullied in school or Russian nationals being denied service in cafés and restaurants.

Even  the medical professions are joininh in with the the lunacy. Last week, the Iatros Clinic in Munich, Germany, announced it would no longer treat Russians and Belarusians. Only after experiencing a wave of online criticism, proving that not everyone has lost their mind, did the facility retract its hysterical decision.

Equally astonishing has been the West’s brutal sanctions regime, which is so vicious, ill - considered and over the top that it could actually succeed in inflicting greater economic pain even on Westerners and the people of third world nations. Responses to the events in Ukraine have, like the responses to the similarly overhyped COVID pandemic, are pure virtue-signaling  on speed, supported by a narrative designed (by behavioural scientists,) to work on the emotions of the general population rather than evoking a rational and balanced response. This is particularly worrying given the mob seems incapable of differentiating between the actions of the Russian government and those of its citizens, who, as is the case with every country finding itself in such circumstances, have precious little say in matters related to war and peace. It is a similar emotional effect as that which drove the hatred of the unvaccinated by those who had accepted having their DNA modified by the clotshot during the pandemic.

And while it is rational to loathe war, and to speak out against it, a little consistency from the consituency currently cheerleading for escalation to nuclear conflict between NATO and Russia plus its allies. Call me a controversialist if you like but I can't help wondering why have the FUKUS axis powersd and their allies never suffered such opprobrium over their illicit military adventures across the Middle East and North Africa?

Ukraine - a lesson on its recent history

The first US-backed soft coup in Ukraine occurred in 2004, when Western-backed presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko lost the election.

The winner of the November 2004 vote, Viktor Yanukovych, was portrayed as being pro-Russian, so Western governments refused to recognize his victory and declared electoral fraud.

Western-backed forces in Ukraine then mobilized and carried out a textbook color revolution, called the “Orange Revolution.” They forced another run-off vote that December, in which their candidate Yushchenko was declared president.

In a shockingly honest 2004 report titled “US campaign behind the turmoil in Kiev,” Britain’s establishment newspaper The Guardian admitted that the “Orange Revolution” was “an American creation, a sophisticated and brilliantly conceived exercise in western branding and mass marketing,” bankrolled with at least $14 million.

“Funded and organised by the US government, deploying US consultancies, pollsters, diplomats, the two big American parties and US non-government organisations, the campaign” attempted to topple governments “in four countries in four years,” The Guardian boasted, targeting Serbia, Georgia, Belarus, and Ukraine.

Severe Drought & "Dust Bowl Conditions" Threaten Disastrous Winter Wheat Harvest In The US

Authored by Michael Snyder via TheMostImportantNews.com,

Food prices in the U.S. have already been soaring, and now we are on track for an absolutely horrible winter wheat harvest.  Of course this comes at a time when the war on the other side of the globe is going to greatly reduce wheat exports from Russia and Ukraine.  Over the last 12 months, the price of wheat has already risen 69 percent, and now this crisis threatens to go to an entirely new level.  In all my years of writing, I have never seen anything like this, and I am deeply concerned about what the months ahead will bring.

Due to extreme drought, winter wheat is in very bad shape in states such as Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.  The following comes from one of the most prominent agricultural websites in the entire country…

Some farmers in southwestern Kansas, the top U.S. wheat producing state, have not received much measurable rain or snow since October. Winter wheat is planted in autumn, lays dormant in winter and begins sending up green shoots in spring. Proper soil moisture is critical at this stage for the crop to thrive.

More than half of Kansas was classified as under severe drought or worse as of March 8, the driest conditions since 2018, according to the National Drought Mitigation Center. Severe drought is also covering three-quarters of Oklahoma and more than two-thirds of Texas, both of which also are large wheat producers.

If that sounds really bad, that is because it is really bad.

Farmers are praying for rain, because they desperately need it.

Evidence-based medicine has been corrupted by corporate interests, failed regulation and commercialisation of academia, which act to suppress negative trial results, conceal adverse events and withhold raw data from the academic research community, according to a peer-reviewed article in the British Medical Journal by Jon Jureidini of the University of Adelaide and Leemon B. McHenry of California State University.

Medicine is largely dominated by a small number of very large pharmaceutical companies that compete for market share, but are effectively united in their efforts to expanding that market. The short term stimulus to biomedical research because of privatisation has been celebrated by free market champions, but the unintended, long term consequences for medicine have been severe. Scientific progress is thwarted by the ownership of data and knowledge because industry suppresses negative trial results, fails to report adverse events, and does not share raw data with the academic research community. Patients die because of the adverse impact of commercial interests on the research agenda, universities, and regulators.

The pharmaceutical industry’s responsibility to its shareholders means that priority must be given to their hierarchical power structures, product loyalty, and public relations propaganda over scientific integrity. Although universities have always been elite institutions prone to influence through endowments, they have long laid claim to being guardians of truth and the moral conscience of society. But in the face of inadequate government funding, they have adopted a neo-liberal market approach, actively seeking pharmaceutical funding on commercial terms. As a result, university departments become instruments of industry: through company control of the research agenda and ghostwriting of medical journal articles and continuing medical education, academics become agents for the promotion of commercial products. When scandals involving industry-academe partnership are exposed in the mainstream media, trust in academic institutions is weakened and the vision of an open society is betrayed.

The corporate university also compromises the concept of academic leadership. Deans who reached their leadership positions by virtue of distinguished contributions to their disciplines have in places been replaced with fundraisers and academic managers, who are forced to demonstrate their profitability or show how they can attract corporate sponsors. In medicine, those who succeed in academia are likely to be key opinion leaders (KOLs in marketing parlance), whose careers can be advanced through the opportunities provided by industry. Potential KOLs are selected based on a complex array of profiling activities carried out by companies, for example, physicians are selected based on their influence on prescribing habits of other physicians. KOLs are sought out by industry for this influence and for the prestige that their university affiliation brings to the branding of the company’s products. As well paid members of pharmaceutical advisory boards and speakers’ bureaus, KOLs present results of industry trials at medical conferences and in continuing medical education. Instead of acting as independent, disinterested scientists and critically evaluating a drug’s performance, they become what marketing executives refer to as “product champions.”

I suspect the authors’ confidence in Government and public funding to free medicine from predetermined agendas is misplaced, as the Government propaganda during the pandemic (and on numerous other issues) has shown. But the points about the corruptions that the dominance of big pharmaceutical companies bring to the development and testing of medicine deserve to be taken seriously.

India Ignores Western Pressure, Buys 'Cheap' Russian Crude

from Zero Hedge, 21 March 2022

With China refusing to bend the knee to Washington's "denounce Putin" demands, it appears the Biden administration's narrative that the world is united against Russia is creaking at the seams as Bloomberg reports that cheap Russian Urals crude is finding willing buyers in India.

And why wouldn't they... With Urals Crude trading at a stunning $30 discount to Brent, who can blame India for snapping it up.

"Russia is offering oil and other commodities at a heavy discount. We will be happy to take that," one of the Indian government officials said.

The official added that such trade required preparatory work including transportation, insurance cover and getting the right blend of crude, but once that was done India would take Russia up on its offer.

Hindustan Petroleum Corp. recently bought 2 million barrels of the grade for delivery in June, and other processors are also seeking cargoes, according to people familiar with the matter. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. and Bharat Petroleum Corp. are looking to buy Urals crude for delivery in May and June, the people familiar with the plans said.

Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told lawmakers on Monday that Indian buyers have contracted the equivalent of about three days’ worth of the nation’s oil needs from Russia, which will be supplied over the next three to four months. That works out at about 15 million barrels of Russian oil, given India’s daily oil requirement of five million barrels.

“Even if we were to scale this up considerably, it would still be literally a drop in a larger bucket,” the minister said in India’s parliament.

Bloomberg does note that, as many western and Asian banks have stopped issuing letters of credit for Russian shipments, it remains to be seen just how much Urals - which mostly loads at Baltic Sea ports - will flow to Asia.

BBC Edits Article to Admit Alleged Female Serial Killer Is a Biological Male

Harvey Marcelin police mugshot

The BBC has been forced to amend an article on alleged transgender serial killer Harvey Marcelin to reflect the fact that the convicted murderer is a biological male.

Marcelin, who was previously imprisoned for over 50 years for killing two former girlfriends, was charged earlier this month with second-degree murder after a woman’s dismembered torso was discovered in Brooklyn.

In an article published on March 14th, the British publicly-funded broadcaster initially failed to mention the alleged killer was transgender and born as a biological male, referring to Marcelin as “her” and “she” throughout.

The article was updated on the 15th, with an addition at the bottom of the story that read: “She now identifies as a transgender woman.” It was further amended on the 17th to note that Marcelin “recently identified as a woman”.

Confirming the changes, a spokesman from the BBC told GB News: “This article used the suspect’s male name. It was amended to make clear that Harvey Marcelin had recently identified as a woman.”

The BBC was not alone in failing to mention the killer’s biological sex and transgender status. An article from the New York Times, for example, merely referred to Marcelin as “An 83-year-old Brooklyn woman”.

Despite the alleged gender transition — there is no evidence that Marcelin has undergone surgery — court records from a State Parole Board hearing in 1997 found that the killer admitted to having “problems” with women.

Oh what a lovely war! Taking Sides In The Ukraine Conflict

by Roger Watson, The Salisbury Review, March 2022

Dr Strangelove or 'How I learned to love the Bomb'

I am a First Gulf War veteran and one of my sons, when very young, asked me which ‘team’ I had been on as if that was a choice for a British soldier. I was recently asked by one of my not so young grandsons which ‘team’ I supported in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Years of online gaming combined with a crumbling state educational system have led young boys to consider that war really is just a game. My son subsequently joined the British Army as a boy soldier through the wonderful Army Foundation College and served for six years so I think his delusions were soon crushed. My grandson received a lecture from me on the nature of war.

But, as I look around me in Britain while part of Europe descends into chaos, I cannot help getting the impression that people here do see this war as a kind of game, and when I catch a painful glimpse of the war reporting on our mainstream media, I see why. It is terrible, over-dramatic and one-sided. Houses in my city are displaying the Ukrainian flag as if we were approaching the final of the world cup and we all ‘supported’ Ukraine. The media are clearly pushing a pro-Ukraine view of the war which is whipping the British public into an anti-Russian frenzy. Thus, we cancel music by Tchaikovsky and a school decides to stop teaching Russian children at weekends. However, every cloud has a silver lining for Russian people living in Russia as Ikea closed its stores and ITN pulled I’m a Celebrity from Russian TV. But joking aside, we seem to have taken leave of our senses here with the view that Russia and therefore Russians represent all things bad and, concomitantly, Ukraine and therefore Ukrainians represent all things good.

As exhorted in an excellent article by Alice Salles in Mises Wire recently, I refuse to take sides in this conflict. To the serried ranks of the virtue-signalling Twitterati this seems to make me a swivel-eyed Putin-loving Russophile. This is far from the case. I have long considered Putin to be a bad ‘un. Something he has proved in an act of military madness and nuclear sabre rattling towards NATO. Nevertheless, he made his intentions clear for years in speeches and abundantly clear by massing troops at the Ukrainian border in recent months. Seemingly we paid little attention until it was probably too late. He must be taken seriously because he is dangerous. I find it harder to take seriously his opposite number in Ukraine, former comedian/actor turned President Zelensky who seems to add another signature to his death warrant daily by appearing on television and taunting the Russians. Moreover, he is being goaded on by us through the provision of the wherewithal to kill the advancing Russian troops. ... Continue reading >>>

Is the death toll of the vaccines becoming impossible to ignore?

from D V Williamson, The Free Range Economist, Substack, 20 March 2022

What is going on?

Summary of Results —

  • Data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) show that, starting in early May, 2021, people have been dying at exponentially increasing rates from conditions involving “Symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified”.  The seasonal, baseline rate in a given January for such “abnormal” conditions would be nearly 700 fatalities per week, but by January 1, 2022 the actual rate had exceeded 3,000 per week and was still sharply increasing.

An obvious hypothesis is that the COVID vaccines (the mRNA therapies) have induced these fatalities.  Specifically, in 2021, deaths in excess of baseline rates that the CDC attributes to “Symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified” very nearly totaled 22,000.  The data indicate at least another 21,000 fatalities in excess of baseline fatalities through the first eight weeks of 2022.  That would put the death toll from the jab in excess of 43,000 as of February 26, 2022.

  • CDC data indicate that fatalities from unnatural causes in excess of baseline rates totaled nearly 20,000 in 2020 and exceeded 20,000 in 2021.  These fatalities started to depart from the baseline in April 2020.  It was at just that time that non-COVID fatalities among people under the age of 45 started to pick up.  Absent evidence to the contrary, it is hard not to conclude that young people and people of prime working age were committing suicide or succumbing to drug overdoses or alcohol poisoning at rates on the order of 500 a week in excess of baseline rates. ... Covid Deaths “Impossible to Calculate” as Authorities Used 14 Different Definitions, Say Oxford Researchers

 By Will Jones  /  19 March 2022 • 12.02 via Daily Sceptic, 19 March 2022

The number of people who have died from Covid in the U.K. during the pandemic is impossible to determine because of the inconsistent definitions of what is meant by a coronavirus death, researchers at Oxford University have concluded. The Telegraph has the story.

Experts from Oxford University discovered that public health and statistics organisations across the U.K. are operating under 14 different definitions to classify a death from Covid.

Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, collated for a new report published on Saturday, show that many people who died in the first wave never tested positive for the virus, particularly older people who died in care homes.

Instead, their deaths were registered as Covid simply based on a statement of the care home provider, and because coronavirus was rife at the time.

In some care homes, more than half of the Covid deaths were registered in people without pre-existing conditions, which the report authors said was “implausible” for people who needed residential care.

The authors also point out that it is unlikely that a Covid infection on its own could cause death in the absence of contributing factors, such as other illness, or the infection leading to a more deadly condition such as pneumonia.

The report also found that in some trusts, up to 95% of Covid deaths were in people with Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders.

The team said the confusion meant they were unable to separate deaths caused by Covid from those triggered by the pandemic response, and called for a proportion of deaths to be verified by post-mortem in future pandemics to determine the true reason.

Worth reading in full and find the report here.

How Volatile Is Offshore Wind?

by Paul Homewood, Notmanypeopleknowthat, 18 March 2022

Offshore Wind Turbines

It is commonly claimed that the wind is much more constant and reliable in the North Sea and around Britain’s coasts than it is inland. “The wind always blows!”

But how true is this?

The Low Carbon Contracts Company, who manage the CfD system, provide daily data for generation by all generators with contracts. In particular there are sixteen offshore wind projects on their database, which offer a good geographical spread. They account for about a half of total UK offshore generation:

I have analysed January 2022 data for these, and below is the daily output:

https://www.lowcarboncontracts.uk/data-portal/dataset/actual-cfd-generation-and-avoided-ghg-emissions

Far from being “constant”, we can see that wind power is extremely volatile. Daily production ranges from 8322 to 84984 MWh, with a monthly average of 49245 MWh.

There were thirteen days when output was below 45000 MWh, in other words more than 10% below average.

There were seven days in the month when it failed to reach 25000 MWh. The average for those days was 17000 MWh, equivalent to them working at 15% of capacity. The worst day, when output was 8322 MWh, offshore wind was only operating at only 7% of capacity.

Bear in mind as well that this is winter, not summer when you might expect low wind speeds.

We have been promised 40 GW of offshore wind by 2030, but in reality the most we can actually rely on is 3 GW.

By Camilla Tominey, Associate Editor 18 March 2022 • 7:18pm Tony Sewell's race report was met with an 'avalanche of criticism' when it was published last year Credit: Clara Molden

When Dr Tony Sewell, the charity worker and author of a Government report on race, had the offer of an honorary degree withdrawn by Nottingham University last year, it reminded him of being racially abused as a young black boy growing up in Brixton.

“Those people just thought of me as one thing, and they hated it. It almost feels like that with the university. They’re like those guys who shouted out the N-word at me when I was seven.” It did not matter that Nottingham had previously honoured former Chinese ambassadors who have cast doubt on the Uighur genocide, and a Malaysian politician found guilty of embezzlement. Or that a senior official at the university has earned almost £150,000 from a Kremlin-linked firm suspected of supplying steel to build Russian tanks.

Sewell’s honorary degree was cancelled in December because he had produced a landmark report that concluded that the “claim the country is still institutionally racist is not borne out by the evidence”.

The 258-page report by the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities (CRED), led by Sewell, was met with what the Guardian newspaper described as “an avalanche of criticism” when it was published in March last year, in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests.

Its conclusion that racism is a “real force” in Britain, but that it is no longer a country where the “system is deliberately rigged against ethnic minorities”, was met with derision by anti-racism campaigners who were also unhappy about the report’s criticism of the “accusatory tone of much of the current rhetoric on race, and the pessimism about what has been, and what more can be, achieved” ... These Charts Show Russia's Invasion Choking World Of Natural Resources

from Zero Hedge, 19 March 2022

For weeks, we've detailed how Russia's invasion of Ukraine has sparked one of the most significant commodity shocks the world has ever experienced. It even supersedes changes to commodity markets in the 1970s and involves every commodity from grain to fertilizer to crude to metals.

In a series of charts (provided by Bloomberg), we will show just how the Ukrainian conflict and Western sanctions on Russia are choking the world's supply of natural resources, driving up prices.

Russia is a top exporter of many commodities.

Here is the share of Russian exports for each region of the world. The U.S. and allies implementing bans on Russian crude and other commodity exports have disrupted global trade and unleashed supply constraint fears (here's why banning Russian crude imports is risky).

Anyone who has filled up their fossil fuel vehicle has noticed prices at the pump have soared since the invasion. That's because Russia is the second-largest crude exporter globally, behind Saudi Arabia. The U.S., U.K., and Canada have banned imports of Russian imports, sending energy markets into turmoil.

“Fully vaccinated” Millennials are reportedly dropping like flies due to Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) “vaccines,” and former Wall Street guru Edward Dowd wants to start a national conversation about it to penetrate the establishment media’s “blackout” of the situation.

“That’s my goal, to just change the conversation, to give people cover,” says Dowd, who used to manage portfolios for the multinational investment firm BlackRock.

“Once the subject is broached, you don’t sound as crazy, if some other guy said it before you,” he told the independent media outlet WND.

With the help of a Wall Street insurance analyst, Dowd discovered that based on data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Millennial generation has suffered a “Vietnam War event” with more than 61,000 excess deaths between March 2021 and February 2022.

In the fall of 2021, there was a particularly significant “spike” in deaths among jabbed young people that cannot be explained by the so-called “delta” variant, opioid abuse, suicide or other causes.

“The only signal that makes sense to me is the vaccines,” says Dowd, who describes himself as a “futurist” and a “stock picker.”

Back in February, Dowd sounded the alarm about Big Pharma’s liability shield concerning covid jab injuries and deaths.

Because of what Congress wrote into the law, which Donald Trump signed off on, just prior to the release of the shots, the pharmaceutical industry cannot be legally held accountable for the carnage caused by these deadly injections ... Continue reading >>>

The Dominance Of The U.S. Dollar Is Fading Right Before Our Eyes

Submitted by QTR's Fringe Finance via Zero Hedge
18 March 2022

It was just a couple of weeks ago that I wrote an article arguing that the economic sanctions we have cast upon in Russia, due to its invasion of Ukraine, likely mark the beginning of a period where China and Russia would bifurcate the global monetary system, leading them to eventually challenge the U.S. dollar’s reserve status.

Now, Saudi Arabia is joining the fray, further threatening to tip the balance of the global monetary scales that have kept the U.S. dollar afloat for decades.

The fact that predictions of a “new economy” and “new monetary system” only exist on fringe blogs like mine and haven’t gone mainstream given the current economic situation with Russia (even amidst our abuses of printing the dollar over the last several decades) is baffling to me.

As I noted to Andy Schectman in a recent podcast, our quality of life in the United States and our nation’s entire economy is an elephant balancing, on one leg, on the toothpick of the U.S. dollar’s reserve status.

Our quality of life relies solely in our unique ability to import the goods and services that we use and need on a daily basis, while exporting US dollars. We’ve been able to print trillions of U.S. dollars into existence over the last couple of years - monetary policy that is anything but sound, regardless of whether or not your currency has global reserve status – because of the luxuries afforded to us by the dollar’s global reserve status.

But this reserve status, and the $30 trillion in debt we have accrued and convinced ourselves we will never have to pay, quickly go from being long-term liabilities that we can theoretically ignore to current liabilities that we must address if the dollar is ever legitimately challenged.

Today’s blog post is free because I believe the content to be far too important to place behind a paywall. If you have the means and would like to support my work, I’d love to have you as a paid subscriber: Subscribe now

Challenging the dollar’s reserve status would be an obvious and immediate catalyst that would flip everything we think we know about economics in our country on its head. Our monetary policy blind spots, that we have been willfully ignoring for decades, would instantly become leverage for the rest of the world.

The stage appears to remain set for this to happen. Globally, if you are an enemy of the United States, the situation hasn’t looked better to challenge the U.S. dollar, maybe ever, than it does now:

  • We have run up a mountain of debt and grossly expanded our money supply in an extremely short period of time

  • We are the most reliant we have ever been on other countries to import goods and services

  • We have a presidential administration that (1) doesn’t understand basic economics and (2) is limiting our nation’s ability to produce commodities, which act as a foundation for a country’s inherent wealth

  • We are about to enter into a economic recession

  • Inflation is setting records and is already bankrupting the middle and lower class of our nation, before even considering a potential challenge to the dollar

And while a week or two ago I was only worried about China and Russia, now that the world has been forced to pick economic sides, other nations are throwing their respective hats in the ring, too.

Saudi Arabia, which is a nation of major consequence economically due to its significant oil and gas reserves, has reportedly embraced the idea of accepting Yuan instead of dollars for Chinese oil sales.

Not unlike Russia and China’s plans to de-dollarize, that date back nearly a decade, the Saudis have been considering this idea for six years already. And not unlike Russia and China’s new economic tie-up, the catalyst for speeding up the process has been U.S. foreign policy:

Saudi Arabia is in active talks with Beijing to price some of its oil sales to China in yuan, people familiar with the matter said, a move that would dent the U.S. dollar’s dominance of the global petroleum market and mark another shift by the world’s top crude exporter toward Asia.

The talks with China over yuan-priced oil contracts have been off and on for six years but have accelerated this year as the Saudis have grown increasingly unhappy with decades-old U.S. security commitments to defend the kingdom, the people said.

The consideration by Saudi Arabia is consequential.

It shows that other nations, when forced to choose sides between the U.S. and its foes, don’t feel obligated to commit to the U.S. dollar, further undermining the world’s perception about the dollar’s strength.

Not unlike Russia, Saudi Arabia is a country that, regardless of how much its currency may “devalue” versus a fiat basket of currencies, is still backed by finite resources.

This gives the country and its currency intrinsic strength. Russia seems to understand this. In fact, just this morning, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, likely alluding to this fact, said that economic sanctions against Russia make the country “stronger”.

Saudi Arabia is now another serious name on the list of contenders who have the currency bite to back up the economic rhetoric bark of challenging the dollar.

As The Wall Street Journal notes, the Saudis have “traded oil exclusively in dollars since 1974, in a deal with the Nixon administration that included security guarantees for the kingdom.”

The U.S. dollar’s ties to oil have been crucial in helping prop up the currency’s demand globally. These ties have also helped drum up the psychological buy-in necessary for the world to collectively accept that “the next guy” is going to want their U.S. dollars.

But given the alliance between Russia and China – and the newfound alliance between Saudi Arabia and China - it looks as though that confidence game might be coming to an end right before our very eyes.

In other words, the dollar could be fading from the global picture like Marty McFly’s brother from that family photo in Back to the Future.

We may not notice it right away…

…but eventually it’ll be clear.

Far be it for me too be a harbinger of too many uncomfortable predictions at once, but, as I wrote last year, I also strongly believe that China will eventually back its forthcoming digital currency with gold to further strengthen its economic and monetary posture globally.

The contrast between a forthcoming divided global economy would be stark: nations like China and Russia seem genuinely interested in the idea of sound money backed by commodities, while the United States seems preoccupied with jargon filled academic circle jerks trying to convince ourselves that debt is money that “we owe to ourselves”, to quote Paul Krugman, and that money literally grows on trees.

If given the choice between the two ideologies, where do you think the world is going to wind up?

I’m not sure we’re ready to embrace the answer here in the United States, but we better get ready to.
