EU’s Unsustainable €1bn-a-day trade gap with China

The EU’s trade deficit with China has been growing for years and, thanks to the efforts of the prosperity and trade hating left and the save-the-planet-by-destroying-civilisation mob recently reached a record €1bn (£0.8bn) a day, according to EU official trade data. This has fuelledconcerns over the future of Europe’s “industrial backbone”.

The gap between the EU’s imports from China and exports to China amounted to €31.9bn in April, according to the latest import and export data from the EU statistics body Eurostat.

The data comes as European leaders prepare to meet on Thursday to discuss measures to address the growing trade imbalance, which includes the increased presence of Chinese electric cars – exported by a heavily subsidised industry – in Europe and the use of everyday components in factories across the bloc.

On receiving the news Javi López, European Parliament vice-president, said the European Union's trade imbalance with China "cannot continue", with the bloc running a €1bn-a-day trade deficit.

After travelling to China this week seeking to end the eight-year stalemate in negotiations with The Peoples Republic to find a way of resolving this trade imbalance, López (S&D, Spain) called for the EU to "relaunch" its relationship with Beijing. He believes dialogue, rather than defensive tariffs and restrictions, is key to rebuilding ties with the Chinese government

The Spanish MEP says solutions based on "dialogue and cooperation", rather than by triggering a trade war between the EU and China should be found, and he expects the European Commission's efforts to begin easing tensions will soon result in progress.

Senor Lopez is sadly out of touch with reality if he thinks the economically devastating trade imbalance between EU and China can be resolved through diplomatic negotiations. That is just not how the Chinese Communist Party do things.

The EU’s trade deficit with China is exploding year in year due to Europe - wide (including UK which is no longer and EU member but plays by the same rules,), and the EU’s heads of state and government, having exported whole industries, and the jobs that go with them, to China, India and the global south while simultaneously crippling what industries remain in the west with high taxes and exorbitant fuel costs in pursuit of  virtue signalling policies like 'Net Zero' are beginning to panic. China and other developing economies pay lip service to net zero and other sacred cows but happily go on increasing CO2 emisssions and damaging the environment regardless.

China’s exports to the EU have risen by 16 per cent in the 2024 - 25 financial year (  Financial Times ) and look set to rise by a similar amount in the current year. The deficit between what we buy from China and what we sell to them now amounts to €1 billion per day. This is not something any European economy can sustain over a prolonged period,  particularly will all major European economies being burdened with debt as a result of overly generous welfare systems. A trade war with China is looking increasingly inevitable.

The leader of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, social democrat Manfred Weber, is uncharacteristically blunt in his assessment.  Weber told the German newspaper Bild

‘Either we defend ourselves, or China will destroy much of our industry.’

Weber is right on target there, China's heavily subsidies automobile manufacturers are already causing Europe's main car makers to reduce production and cut jobs, as our recent report on Vlokswagen demonstrated.

The European market is now being flooded with cheap Chinese goods after China’s trade war with Trump and the United States put a stop to much of its exports there. A thorn in the EU’s side is China’s extensive state support for various industries. This gives Chinese companies an unfair advantage as EU and World Trade Organisation approaches to subsidies are governed by the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM Agreement), which restricts the use of subsidies and allows member countries to impose countervailing measures if they can demonstrate injury to a domestic industry from subsidised imports.

The EU is accustomed to treading softly in relation to China, and President Antonio Costa did not even mention China in responding to Lopez in the trade deficit issue.

Beijing is aware of European dissatisfaction with the situation and has launched a campaign to prevent the EU from adopting new measures to slow Chinese imports. Earlier this month China cancelled two important diplomatic meetings with the EU at short notice, according to the FT.

Beijing is said to be particularly dissatisfied with the EU’s new industrial legislation and the ‘Buy European’ decision. EU diplomats, for their part, are clear that ‘macroeconomic imbalances’ is synonymous with China.

‘Of course it is China we are talking about,’ say two senior diplomats.

They believe that the EU must sharpen its trade policy instruments to meet what they regard as unfair competition from China, but reject the suggestion that this amounts to provoking conflict.

‘This is a reaction. It was they who started it,’ says one of the diplomats.

If the EU prioritises internal compromise, it will end up suffering defeat at the hands of China, which is paying close attention and knows where to apply pressure.

Volkswagen Crisis - German Car Giant To Drastically Reduce Model Range As Germany's Industrial Decline Continues

Volkswagen (VW), not long ago the word's biggest automobile maker, but now second to Toyota, in danger of being overhauled by Hyundai and with the spectre of China's Geeley and BYD looming ever larger in the rear view mirror, having failed to agree with unions  a plan to cut 100,000 jobs, are now looking for ways to axe half of its two model range as part of a cost-cutting drive.

The German car giant, which has been battling a downturn in sales performance exacerbated by high energy and labour costs, supply line problems and punitive taxes imposed by the German government and the EU,, announced the measure after the board's last ditch effort failed to agree on job cuts of up to 100,000 roles in a crunch meeting with union representatives.

VW said that halving the number of models it sold would allow it to focus on its best-selling and most profitable vehicles.

It did not say which brands would be affected or when the changes would be made, but the move raises the prospect of dozens of popular models being scrapped.

Volkswagen and other EU car manufacturers are being hammered by competition from China where there are no net zero obstacles and exports are heavily subsidised. The EU's protectionist policy is supposed to cushion intra-EU car manufacture from this only it can't due to the risks of a trade war. So what is the point of the EU?

Some may claim this Volkswagen crisis is capitalism in action, and while that may be true to some extent in Germany, we must always be aware that the western European nations (and a lesser extent in the USA,) due to state and EU interventions and policies like the enforced switch to EVs, net zero and high taxation to support extravagant welfare systems, market forces are distorted. The price of new cars have become prohibitively expensive mainly due to (in the UK anyway) the anti car Government piling more and more taxes on top plus the ludicrously expensive road fund tax (which doesn't go on roads) on new cars.I think it is only buyers of Company cars and the outrageous disability car purchase scam who can afford to buy a new car.

I can afford to buy a new car, but why would I when it loses 30% of its value once I take delivery? I’d rather pay 30% less. Most people don’t buy cars anyway, they pay a monthly fee to use them, like mobile phones, music, Sky, Netflix and the like

Short of new sactions across the board on Chinese cars, VW are going to have to eliminate most of their 'cheaper' cars, and hope that the expensive ones maintain some market share. I guess this is essentially what this new plan is.

Thank you Net Zero. The European car industry is finished, In 5 years time the Chinese will own VW, Stellantis, BMW, Renault and ... I can't think of any other European owned company except Mercedes but they will survive by retreating to the luxury market.

Has Putin Has Pushed Europe Into Economic Depression, Hyperrinflation and Currency Collapse?
Though it was entirely predictable and indeed had been expected for some time, the news over the weekend that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline which feeds gas from Russia to northern Europe via The Baltic route had been shut down completely by The Kremlin in retaliation for the continued financial and military support given by NATO and EU member states to Ukraine in the conflict with Russia. The European Commission, governing body of the EU, immediately put the community on something close to a war footing, ...

Jingoistic Western Triumphalism Will Not End The War In Ukraine Or Cripple Putin, But It Is Crippling Western Nations
As the war in Ukraine grinds on and Russia steps up its economic war against the west and in particular The European Union, claims made recently by the idiotically 'woke' leaders of Europe's main economic and military powers that the West has a once-in-a–generation chance to severely weaken Russia’s capabilities, both militarily and geopolitically, look increasingly hollow. Putin's critics have cited 'Western unity' as one of the main reasons why Russia will be economically destroyed and politically humiliated when the Ukraine's military finally claim victory.

European Union Is Again Close To A Meltdown As Eurozone Economy Collapses
Once more we return to the political instability and economic fragility of the European Union as the conflict in Ukraine combined with loonytoons Climate Change mitigation policies, the failure of 'sustainables' to meet ever increasing demand for electricity, fod shortages and rampant price inflation put economic and social pressure on governments of member states ...

Debunked: The Great Renewable Green Delusion
The war in Ukraine has not caused the global energy crisis of early 2022 byt merely exacerbated it. Currently the nations currently in conflict with Russia over its incursion into Ukraine are those which are most dependent for their energy needs on Russian oil and gas. And now their loonytoons 'net zero' green energy policies have failed they are biting the hand that feeds them.

Putin, Macron To Hold Urgent Talks To Halt Military Escalation In Ukraine
Even though the leaders of Ukraine itself are talking down the threat of war with Russia over the breakaway region of Donbas, America and Britain are still beating the war drums and demonising Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Russia insists they have no plans to invade Ukraine and one western leader at least, France's Emmanuel Macron, seems to be listening to messages coming out of the East European trouble spot...

British Government Laundered Fake U.S. 'Intelligence' On Ukraine
The British government on Saturday accused Russia of organizing a plot to install a pro-Moscow government in Ukraine, as the Kremlin masses troops near the Ukrainian border. The U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office gave relatively little information about the intelligence unveiled Saturday other than to say that the Russian government was considering trying to make a Russia-leaning former member of Ukraine’s parliament, Yevhen Murayev, the country’s new leader. Do We Have A Winter Of Civil Disobedience Ahead?
As many people in Britain slap on the apres sun gloop in the wake of what passes for a heatwave in these cool cloudy climes, our inept politicians caught with their pants down by unusual weather as usual have heard that that winter is coming and are making plans for a coldwave. We are in the grip of an energy crisis at the height of summer. Last week, it was reported that the UK government is laying down plans for a “reasonable worst-case scenario” including blackouts for industry and even households. And this is as energy prices spiral out of control to new records every day.

Official Advice - Prepare For Blackouts This Winter

The UK government is putting plans together for days of organised blackouts this winter, in what they call a "reasonable worst-case scenario" for energy shortages, according to reports in manstream media. Naturally they are blaming this on the embargo on importing gas from Russia but in reality Britain has never imported any more than a small amout of its gas from Russia. The real reason politicians and energy company CEOs are panicking is entirely due to their obession with obtaining all our energy from intermittent sources like wind and sunshine ...

Is Russia Selling Its Oil To The World Through An Obscure Egyptian Port?
As this blog predicted when NATO and EU member states shot themselves in the foot by reacting to Russia's invasion of Ukraine with sanctions that prevented Russia from selling oil, gas and vital raw materials to the countries that needed them most, the NATO and EU member states, the Russians have had no problems finding alternative customers for their gas and oil and no problem getting oil into the world's commodity markets through the back door.

"Our Country Is Facing The Biggest Crisis The Crisis We Ever Had": German Employers' Association Warns Over Russian Gas Cut
With the Nord Stream 1 pipeline closed for maintenance, with the possibility that President Putin will not allow it to reopen at the end of the scheduled 10 days downtime in retaliation for the EU's continued support or Ukraine in their conflict with Russia, Germany is facing an unprecedented crisis that could erase the prosperity Germans have grown accustomed to, warned Rainer Dulger, head of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations.

Europe's biggest economy would suffer a 6.5pc contraction if Russian energy is suspended, experts warn
Even though the sanctions already imposed on Russia in respondse to the invasion of Ukraine are hitting the nations that imposed then harder that their intended target, the EU is preparing to committ economic suicide in an orgy of virtue signalling ...

We The Good Guys Versus They The Bad Guys Reporting Does Not Make Sense For The Ukraine Crisis
Mainstream media reporting of the conflict in Ukraine has disappointed. Perhaps I was naive to suppose that lessons might have been learned from the hits their print sales and online traffic rates took as a result of their handling the COVID pandemic But instead of focusing on the most obviously newsworthy aspect of the build up to and escalation of the war, Russia’s view of NATO expansion into Ukraine and even further to Georgia and Kazakhstan, news reports have simply demonised Russia and portrayed Ukraine as the good guys.

Boris and Biden Can't Blame Ukraine War For Energy Crisis
With typical arrogance and condescension towards the people who elected them Boris Johnson, Joe Biden and their respectiive presstitutes are trying to spin the energy crisis Europe and North America are currently facing as somehow being linked to the conflict in Ukraine and therfore blame is being attactched to Russia and Vladimir Putin. Do they really think we are stupid enough to believe such unmitigated bollocks? ...

Even If The War In Ukraine Ends, Sanctions Will Stay - So How Bad Will The Food Crisis Get?
Western leaders, desperate to show their own countries they were taking a firm stance on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, were quick to impose economic sanctions ... so quick in fact that they acted before they had though things through. While freezing Russia out of the global finance system they have exacerbated the wests energy crisis, while Russia's retaliatory ban on raw materials (fertiliser) exports will create extra problems on top of those we already had ...

Europe's Depleted Gas Storage Might Not Get Refilled Ahead Of Next Winter
While mainstream news reporting of the conflict in Ukraine continues to pump out a torrent of anti - Russia, pro - war propaganda the catastropic effects of this war that could so easily have been avoided are not mentioned. Futures - Some Speculations On How The Forever Wars May Change The World

contributed by Hugh Jarse, 4 June 2026

It seems peace talks between the USA and Iran have now stalled completely thanks to the intervention of the Israelis although whether there were ever realistic hope for a lasting peace and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz seaway will probably never be known.

What this means to the west and the democratic nations of south east Asia and the Pacific area is that we are in for prolonged high prices for fuel, disruption of supply lines and soaring cost of living as Russia and China take advantage of the situation to turn the screws and squeeze western economies.

Another possibility is Iran will fall. Unfortunate but the possibility exits. Instead of shutting out the possibility Russia should  plan (and probably has,)to turn it into a grand opportunity. If Iran is weakened it will be likely  to host Russian military bases in the country to counter the threat from Israel. Russia has been asking this but thus far Iran has refused. Very bad memories of WW2 events when Russia joined the evil empires. Having a military presence in the Strait of Hormuz is a game changer for Russia. Unlike Iran, Russia can’t be negotiated away from assuming a hostile position.

This would create a massive bargaining chip to force surrender of Lewinsky Zelensky regime (pun so intended), lift petroleum sanctions against Russia (or Arab oil goes nowhere), a warm water port in Chabahar for nuclear submarines that more than compensate for the loss of Black Sea and Baltic Sea exits. Azerbaijan stands in the way of total Russian domination of the region.

This Turkish outpost is a threat to the region. It’s easy game. Thereafter Oman too can be cleared paving the way for Iran to control the entire Arabic coastline other than inlets. Djibouti and surrounds are already pro-Iranian thanks to the Al-Shabab and Houthi alliance. The decision makers in the north see this once in a century opportunity. But all depends on a weakened Iran. It’s still strong. Let the fools do all the hard work of weakening Iran before Russia moves, that's how the Russians have always worked.

It’s not well known that Russia is one of the leading exporters of foodstuffs, grains especially. Its farmers believe Russia has the ability to solve what they call the food problem, meaning global hunger. Within Russia and the Central Asian EAEU members, there’s a vast amount of land that can be cultivated or made into pasture, plus the advances  in greenhouse farming is remarkable allowing crops to be grown in what are very marginal climates. While governments in the UK and Europe obsess over crackpot policies like Net Zero, 'rewilding and importing all food and manufactured goods (paid for with money borrowed from China via the global banks,) the nations our leaders tell us are 'The Bad Guys' have positioned themselves to take advantage of the sentimental stupidities that pass for economic policy in the developed nations.

We should also look at the advances African nations have made toward attaining food sovereignty with help from Russia and China. The nations most affected by the fertiliser shortage caused first by the sanctions imposed on Russia for its action against the Ukronazis in Kiev and now exacerbated by the much reduced flow of goods out of The Persian Gulf, are those with industrial agriculture methods including the use of GM seeds whose high yields depend on those inputs.

This kind of response from Russia and China is understandable, the US and Europe have been working to impoverish Russia since before 1945, and has colonised and exploited Africa since way before then, and has been no friend to China until it suited the elites and the global banks to use China as the world's workshop because of its low labour costs and a totalitarian systrem of government unencumbered by the lobbying of 'save-the-planet' screechers.

As things stand it looks increasingly possible the USA and Europe will lose the current set of wars that we are undertaking. Prolonged war would leave European Russia severely damaged.  Asian Russia and Central Asia are likely to survive mostly intact and have a convenient long border with China.  The US and Europe will continue to promote war and submission in Africa, but that is coming to an end due to growing Chinese influence on the dark continent. None of the west's leaders appear to possess the testicular fortitude to risk pissing off the Chinese as they have the Russians

After the west's capitulation, Asian Russia would probably become very prosperous.  Prosperous enough to rebuild European Russia, and then help with other regions after that.  Africa will steadily grow and become an independent continent.  If they become mostly internally peaceful with respect to each other, Africa will prosper.

The US has the ability to destroy lots of the world before it loses, and the odds of the US unleashing nukes is not zero.  However, if the Democrats retake the White House at the end of the Trump presidency and revert to the loonytoons policies of the Obama and Biden eras, the ability of the US to control other nations will become close to non-existent.  Even if the Epstein class relocates to Argentina, their wealth and power will be substantially reduced.  Thus we can be reasonably optimistic about the long term future of humanity on the planet Earth.  It’s just the short term we should be concerned about.

Another possibility is Iran will fall. Unfortunate but the possibility exits. Instead of shutting out to the possibility Russia should plan to turn it into a grand opportunity. If Iran is weakened Iran will likely host Russian military bases in the country. Russia has been asking this but thus far Iran has refused. Very bad memories of WW2 events when Russia joined the evil empires.

Having a military presence in the Strait of Hormuz would be a game changer for Russia. Unlike Iran, Russia can’t be negotiated away from assuming a hostile position. A massive bargaining chip to force surrender of Lewinsky Zelensky regime (pun so intended), lift petroleum sanctions against Russia (or Arab oil goes nowhere), a warm water port in Chabahar for nuclear submarines that more than compensate for the loss of Black Sea and Baltic Sea exits.

Thereafter Oman too can be cleared paving the way for Iran to control the entire Arabic coastline other than inlets. Djibouti and surrounds are already pro-Iranian thanks to the Al-Shabab and Houthi alliance. Hope the decision makers in the north see this once in a century opportunity.

But all this depends on a weakened Iran. It’s still strong. Let the fools do all the hard work of weakening Iran before Russia moves the knight. Oh a byproduct will be the collapse of the entity hanging north of the Red Sea.

Iran Weaponises The Strait of Hormuz Against The Petrodollar

 https://www.sbcgold.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/petrodollar-1024x500.jpg
The Petrodollar system has propped up the US economy for 50 years - picture: sbcgold.com

In spite of the very fragile ceasefire in the conflict between the USA / Israel alliance and Iran, the theocratic regime of the Muslim nation has opened a new front in the war by weaponising the Strait of Hormuz against The Petrodollar

Having made this strait a de facto toll gate at the entrance to the Persian Gulf, the Iranians are demanding that commercial vessels pay hefty transit fees in yuan or Bitcoin, according to multiple reports form news organisations in the middle east. As well as signalling a further deepening of Chinese-Iranian economic cooperation it brings a new dimension to Ian's asymmetric warfare. A huge proportion of the world's hydrocarbons supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz and significant reductions in shipping movements will trigger a global crisis.

China, Russia and Iran along with their BRICS partners have been threatening currency wars with the aim of replacing or at least offering a serious rival to the US Dollar as the primary global reserve curency.

For years, Russia and the two Asian allies have accused Washington of using the dollar's dominance in global trade as a weapon, imposing sanctions and inflicting economic pain on rivals through the dollar-dominated financial system.

Now the ongoing war aound The Gulf - and lets not fool ouselves that the current ceasefire will turn into lasting peace - is forcing a fundamental reassessment of the petrodollar system that has underpinned US financial hegemony for decades. This informal arrangement, in which Gulf oil producers price crude in dollars and reinvest revenues in US assets, emerged as a cornerstone of American economic power in the 1970s and has held since then. But with the US-Israeli campaign against Iran now in its second month, the strait’s uncertain fate is raising urgent questions about whether that order can survive.

Iran has so far managed to withstand the US-Israeli attack and inflict some damage on Israel and US allies around The Gulf, even after significant casualties aming its leadership, and has been able to assert strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz. Thus they have added a currency war to the shooting war.

This means Iran has been able to insist it will only accept  payment for passage through the Strait of Hormuz in Chinese Yuan or crypto currencies, . At least two vessels have so far settled the transit fees in Yuan via a Chinese maritime services company which is acting as an intermediary and handling payment to the Iranian authorities.

This is a significant even though analysts debate if it can ultimately become decisive in the longer run. The de-dollarisation rhetoric has emanated from China, Russia, Iran and their BRICS partners for years, without materialising into meaningful change. Now, if one of the vital choke points through which one-fifth of the world's petroleum passes becomes conditional on currency denomination that is meaningful.

The practical consequence, even if it was partially adopted, would be a bifurcated global oil market. One where yuan-denominated barrels flowing through Hormuz for payment in China's currency in the Chinese payment system CIPS ( Cross-Border Interbank Payment System) and dollar-denominated barrels are rerouted at a high additional cost and time for those who are not using Chinese currency.

Further, Iran is employing a broader mechanism employing informal transactions in cryptocurrency to effectively circumvent the US financial system. Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Affairs at Renmin University, said that the yuan-for-passage is more likely to gain international acceptance than a complete blockade.

Of far more concern to banks and businesses in the west if oil shipments through the strait are to be transacted in currencies other than the dollar, particularly the Chinese yuan and the Iranian rial the  Gulf states, driven by security concerns, begin to distance themselves from the dollar-based energy trade, the ripple effects could be profound: reduced demand for the greenback, waning appetite for US Treasury debt, and a gradual erosion of the dollar’s reserve currency status.

Does Trump's Crazy Rhetoric Suggest He Plans To Nuke Iran?

https://as1.ftcdn.net/v2/jpg/05/49/64/38/1000_F_549643864_CRjKVdZ2hkWztULBmdYwxm7ROu84wwRE.jpg
Nuclear explosion (Picture - adobe stock image )

American President Donald Trump inexplicably gambled the future of the world and his own political legacy on achieving regime change in Iran. From last summer's first shouts in the campaign to replace the theocratic regime this blog warned that Iran was not some third world failed state which could easily be rolled over.

Now Trump's Iran gamble, which was always a risky bet, is poised on a knife edge, the Iranian's have so far given as good as they get in terms of air and drone strikes, have invoked asymmetric warfare by weaponising the Strait of Hormuz through which, when shipping can move freely through it, approximately a quarter of the worlds oil, natural gas and petroleum products are distributed..

At first, in the opening days of the current round of hostilities most conservative opinion in the USA was behind Trump but currently, five weeks into the war, it is getting harder to find commentators who are backing him to the hilt. Even some of his more usually supportive backers are getting cold feet. Andrew Day in American Conservative is worried that Trump might use nukes in Iran:

A new rhetorical theme emerged last week, when Trump threatened to bomb Iran “back to the Stone Ages”. The phrase is associated with Curtis LeMay, who served as Air Force chief of staff during the Vietnam war. LeMay is known for something else too: his promotion of nuclear weapons and complaint that Americans had a “phobia” of using them.

Trump doesn’t seem to share that deranged perspective, but nuclear anxieties are growing thanks to his belligerence. Two weeks ago, a United Nations representative resigned from his post and leaked the disturbing information that “the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran”. Days earlier, officials from the World Health Organisation told Politico they were worried about a possible nuclear attack.

If Trump decides to go further and actually push the big red button, at least one of his main advisors likely wouldn’t object. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has echoed Trump’s threat to send Iran back to the Stone Age, and he says US armed forces should aim for “maximum lethality, not tepid legality”.

As Trump's threats and claims have become crazier day by day it looks as if nuclear is on the agenda. Many American commentators think there is a strong likelihood the US will use a nuclear weapon. Who is going to object? America's NATO allies in the UK and Europe have surrendered the right to do that because of the way they hve distanced themselves from the whole escapade. Russia and China are Iran's allies but it is unlikely they would risk all out war with The USA over Iran. Both would probably instigate moves to have America censured by theUnited Nations and then take a PR advantage of the situation since their leadership is not crazy like ours is (in the US).

There is no certainty that the Iranians, like the Japanese will surrender should the US use a weapon of mass destruction, more likely they would retreat and allow a US occupation and then wage guerilla warfare for years, knowing that the American public do not like US soldiers returning home in body bags.

Will there be someone in the US government able to stop such a thing? We shall see. This is an existential struggle for Iran but also for the American global hegemony. If the US allows Iran to win that would be the beginning of the end of the Petrodollar Empire as many are predicting.

Forget Renewables, The Strait Of Hormuz Crisis Shows The World Still Runs On Hydrocarbons

Strait of Hormuz - where the Persian Gulf meets the Indian Ocean
infographic via freemalaysiatoday.com showing pre - war marine traffic

The Strait of Hormuz is barely 21 miles wide at its narrowest point with only about 12 miles of that navigable by big ships. Yet this narrow maritime corridor carries one of the greatest concentrations of economic risk on the planet. When tensions flare in the Persian Gulf, the shockwaves  are felt in India,China, Japan, Indonesia and Australia — and ultimately across the entire global economy.

The reason is simple. Roughly one fifth of the world’s oil  and petroleum products passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making it the most critical energy marine chokepoint on Earth. However most of the oil and a lot of the LNG and petroleum products coming out of the strait are headed east towards India, China and Japan rather than turning west towards Europe and the USA. So why is it such a big deal?

Because despite all the huff and puff from the woke brigade Fossil Fuels provide 85% of the worlds energy, the world still runs on oil and gas. Silly countries like the UK and Germany where the governing elites have been captured by the UN and WEF  dogma about destroying the planet by polluting the atmosphere with Carbon Dioxide (CO2) a trace gas on which all life depends, are prepared to impoverish their citizenry, industries and destroy their Industrial Base so as to be the goody two shoes CO2 emissions reduction champions because they are fully aligned with globalist politics like Net Zero. Even now these stupid people are too stubborn to admit they are wrong, oil, gas and other hydrocarbon products are still vital to the global economy.

A big part of that elitist environmental virtue signalling has ben the ruch among the governments of the west's great manufacturing nations to export manufacturing industries and the jobs and prosperity those industries bring, to the emerging economies of the far east, China, India, Indonesia and others. These are the countries whose tankers the USA claims are moving through the strait. Thus the now consumption driven economies of the west depend for our mnufactured goods on the places the oil, gas, etc. passing through the strait is heading for.

Discussions on energy policy tend to focus on electricity and getting 'free' energy from 'sustainable' sources like wind and solar, but electricity is only about 15% of energy consumption. Rural France relies heavily on heating oil and LPG, and France imports LNG for its gas grid. So France will be just as affected as other European Countries if the supply line for hydrocarbons remains disrupted.

But only 2% of petroleum consumed in the USA and zero gas goes past Hormuz. The USA being mostly self-sufficient in oil and gas – so Trump is bothered about Iran's blockade of he Strait Of Hormuz because… ? And now USA has Venezuelan oil too….nice one Trumpie. Only 4% of oil and 10% of LNG transiting Hormuz is bound for Europe. Its closure is no biggy, therefore. It’s the destruction of LNG processing that is the problem for Europe. And Europe: if only there were an alternative supply of oil and gas, like Russia – Oh wait a sec.

A sensible, pragmatic government would take the present crisis as evidence that we cannot rely on foreign sources of oil and gas, and that we need to exploit the plentiful resources that lie within our territory or beneath the seas surrounding our archipelago. They would get the oilfields and gasfields open and producing. Not the idiots in the present government, they will just use this as “proof” that we need to move away from fossil fuels and rely solely on green energy. They’ll ignore the inconvenient truth that hydrocarbons are necessary as a raw material for a range of vital industries, and that without fossil fuels to back them up, our “renewable” energy sources are a useless ornament when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind  doesn't blow.

With Energy Stocks At End Of Winter Low And Europe Vulnerable To An Energy Crisis, Putin Says Russia May Pull The Plug On Gas Supplies

Russia has threatened to cut off  gas supplies to Europe, just as energy reserves are at an end-of-winter low, and as markets experience a spike ‌in energy prices triggered by the Iran crisis. President Vladimir Putin warned of potential action from Russia on Wednesday, linking the possible decision to the European Union wanting to ban purchases of Russian gas and liquefied natural gas.

Oil and gas prices have soared in global commodity markets following the U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran and Tehran's strikes on Gulf Arab neighbours. The conflict has  almost halted the flow of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz through which about 30% of the world's oil passes, and forced the shutdown of Qatar’s LNG production and Saudi Arabia’s largest oil refinery.

This threat to Europe's energy security comes as Iran tightens its chokehold on the the marine gateway to the Persian Gulf oil ports through the Strait and Trump's Iran regime change strategy for weakening China by taking out its middle east proxy and main supplier of crude oil and petroleum products seems set to turn into another 'forever war' quagmire.

It is also worth  thinking about the effect this Iran skirmish would have on China.  Other commentators also seem to be waking up to the idea  this has been part of Trump’s explicit strategy all along. Iran in the Middle East, China in the East, were always the main villains in American eyes. The tariff gambit weakened China enough for them to realise that their economy relies on trade with the West and back off their tactic of disrupting western consumer markets.

That gave Washington space to turn its attention to Iran.  His brash and bombastic smoke-and-mirror tactics in the arctic, Caribbean and middle east were not just to trigger TDS meltdowns in liberals and lefties for the entertainment of people like me. He had to keep foes and allies alike guessing about what he was really up to.

Trump is now demanding Iran’s unconditional surrender. At last! The only way to break the appeasement stranglehold of the so-called liberal rules-based world order delusion of the Western elites, is the firm hand.Show the upstar BRICS bloc that despite the pussyfooting of a few decades of weak, virtue sgnalling leaders, the west is not finished.

An appeasement strategy and a virtue signalling philosophy of lets-all-be-one-big-happy-global-nation attracts toadies whose inadequacyis quickly exposed when they have to make tough decisions, and they turn into crybullies, coercing their own people into bowing before the threats of tyrants; but it also attracts the amoral charlatan, and the society becomes riddled with bribery and extortion. As we have observed in Europe and the USA

In addition to potential Iranian control of the Gulf, Russia, which could have been an alternative source of hydrocarbons, is already a no-go area for western land and air traffic and Iranian-sponsored Houthis have the potential to control shipping transiting the Red Sea. On top of this, China now poses a threat as it has a naval base at the mouth of the Red Sea at Djibouti and is building a string of dual-purpose ports along the East coast of Africa. Collectively, this choke point and who controls it is known as the 52nd Meridian East Challenge.

Given this context, it's hardly surprising that the US wants to neutralise the threat from China's middle east proxy Iran. It's vital to ensure western Europe-Asia trade, supply chains, and military movement.Somebody, and due to European pussification it could only have veen the USA, had to move to stop the advance of China, which in addition to having become, with the aid and complicity of European and previous US Presidents, the world's leading industrial nation, has also been planning to replace the $US with its own reserve currency and has ben infiltrating and undermining wetern political systems, particularly that of the UK, without opposition for far too long.

Trump's Four Week Timeframe For The US Proxy War With China Is Not Looking Good

The war on Iran is spreading out of the Gulf region and escalating – and will continue do to so for a while. Tehran is being bombed to smithereens, and the Iranian navy is (soggy) toast, but the Strait of Hormuz, the key sea route though which 30% of the world's oil flows is closed the hydrocarbon infrastructure in the Gulf is shutting down or gets damaged, the economic pressure on the global economy is starting to show. Iran does not need warships to keep the Strait closed, just some mobile missile launching rigs and a load of cheap but highly effective drones.

The Strait of Hormuz, gateway to The Gulf (Picture: The Telegraph)

Speculatig about the likely length of the war does not answer the question of why the U.S. decide to attack Iran now. U.S. President Trump has give about a dozen different reasons none of which holds up to scrutiny. Iran wasn’t making nukes, didn’t build intercontinental missiles and had no intend to attack anyone. Its internal situation was and is stable.

The reason that makes most sense, although it has not been given by Trump himself so far, is that the US campaign against Iran is a proxy war with China, part of Trump's Grand Strategy to halt the rise of the communist state to true superpower status.

The goal is to obtain control via a puppet government in Tehran over Iran’s enormous oil and gas reserves so that they can be used as leverage against China for coercing it into a lopsided trade deal that would derail its economic expansion and thus restore US-led unipolarity.

Trump claimed that the US’ military campaign against Iran is to “defend the American people”, while many critics have alleged (whether in jest or not) that it’s to distract from the Epstein Files, but a few astute observers have realised that it’s actually about China. It was explained here that Trump 2.0 “decided to gradually deprive China of access to markets and resources, ideally through a series of trade deals, in order to imbue the US with the indirect leverage required to peacefully derail China’s superpower rise.”

To elaborate, “The US’ trade deals with the EU and India could ultimately result in them curtailing China’s access to their markets under pain of punitive tariffs if they refuse. In parallel, the US’ special operation in Venezuela, pressure on Iran, and simultaneous attempts to subordinate Nigeria and other leading energy producers could curtail China’s access to the resources required for fueling its superpower rise.” The resource dimension that’s relevant to Iran is a major part of the US’ “Strategy of Denial”.

The decision by USA and Israel to go to war against Iran was, according to Alistair Crooke speanking on  Andrew Napolitano's YouTube show today, confirmed at the end of December, coinciding with Treasury’s attack on Iran’s currency/economy. The economic attack was followed by the orchestrated protests within Iran, which was accelerated by violent elements seeking to escalate violence on all sides, coordinated with external propaganda networks.

Current indications are that the Americans are trying to get some kind of ceasefire put in place, but their track record of negotiating in bad faith is severely limiting any progress there. Israeli hubris appears to have gone mute – three days ago they were joking about bomb shelter “pajama parties”, and now the joke is on them and they have yet to be seriously targeted. There is a very high chance should matters proceed as currently, that some sort of “doomsday” weapon will be employed by US and/or Israel (nuclear bomb, neutron bomb, etc)

There are also rumours that China is supplying Iran with weapons and technical support. What The Pentagon appears to have overlooked in their plan of campaign is that they are not fighting an ordinary enemy in Iran, they are fighting an ideology.

Meanwhile after an incursion by Israeli forces in Lebanon, an announcement was made that the Tehran - funded terror group Hezbollah had been “disarmed” in the south. As for Gaza, the Board of Peace looks sure to be dead after a single meeting.
