Will The Online Safety Bill Protect Free Speech Or Assist Censorship?

The UK Online Safety Bill is presented to parliament for its final reading next week. Secretary of State for Digital Culture Michelle Donelan announced this morning that the controversial “legal but harmful” clause has been removed and thus free speech has been protected.  Anti self-harm activists and groups opposinthe Gay BLTQ movement's push for paedophile equal rights and the sexualisation of children don’t like it one little bit, though free-speech enthusiasts should take no comfort from that. The Bill puts into legal jeopardy anything that creates “a material risk of significant harm to an appreciable number of adults in the United Kingdom”.

Significant harm? What constitutes “significant harm”? As with the previous 'legal but harmful' nonsence who gets to define what exactly is  harmful and what is not. Precedent tells us “harm” is very much in the heart of the beholder.

Say that a private citizen posts:

Biological sex trumps gender ID. Transwomen are transwomen – not actual women.

If a Gay BLTQ rights activist reports the post to Ofcom – or to the publishing platform, or to the court, in a private prosecution – saying,

This hateful speech has damaged the core of my identity. It has attempted to erase my very being. I feel not just disparaged but annihilated. Half of all trans children who are denied will attempt suicide. I am now in danger of killing myself.

How can that not be interpreted as “significant harm”? The question is – under this Bill, will Kathleen Stock (the university lecturer hounded from her job by woke activists) be able to question gender ideology on social media?

A critical reading of the Bill suggests she will not. Activists will claim harm. And even if Ofcom prevaricates, the owner of the platform will fear the threat being fined 10% of its worldwide income while its users are scared away by loony leftie hate mobs. It will censor the posts of private citizens and all posts like it “to prevent harm,”

Twitter’s Head of Site Integrity  (aka Virtue Signalling,) Yoel Roth, said Twitter is seeing “governments become more aggressive in how they try to use legal tactics to unmask the people using our service” and as a way to “silence people”. This is an unconscioius irony as Twitter traded on its reputation for silencing opinions that its far left founders did not approve of. (Tech Outlook). However the view that social media platforms are being treated unfairly unless they are allowed to influence democratic elections through censorship of non 'woke' contributors is shared by WhatsApp CEO, Will Cathcart, who this week said his company might cease operating in the UK if the Online Safety Bill reaches the statute book in its current form. (BBC).

Cathcart specifically  referring to a new, government-backed amendment to the bill requiring tech firms like WhatsApp to use “best endeavours” to deploy new technology in identifying and removing child sexual abuse and exploitation and grooming content if existing technology isn’t suitable for that purpose on their respective platforms. (Sky News).

Under the new amendment online regulators Ofcom will be able to demand that tech firms implement new technology to help find abuse - related material and stop its spread. (Guardian).

Mr Cathcart said that “what’s being proposed is that… we read everyone’s messages”, which suggests WhatsApp, having reclassified itself as a publisher rather than an open platform by censoring certain content, fears Ofcom may well ask online service providers to pursue ‘client-side scanning’, a controversial surveillance method which allows providers of end-to-end encrypted communication services to automatically scan private chats, messages, texts, images, videos and speech sent from that ‘client’s’ phone for suspicious content which could then automatically be reported to the police. For Whats App's owners the fundamental problem with client-side scanning is that it undermines the company's’s unique selling point, namely, secure, end-to-end encryption. As a spokesman told the BBC’s Tech Tent podcast, “WhatsApp’s a global product. People use it… to talk across countries all the time. And so if we had to lower security for the world to accommodate a [regulatory] requirement in one country, as a business decision, that would be very foolish for us.” 

Would WhatsApp go dark in the UK if the amended Online Safety Bill is passed into law?,  CEO Cathcart said, “To date, the way we’ve worked is we’ve offered a global service and some countries choose to block it,” he replied. “I hope that never happens in a liberal democracy.”

The case for the Government’s amendment is of course that it will protect children. According to the National Crime Agency, there are between 550,000 and 850,000 people in the UK who pose a sexual risk to children, and it’s not difficult to understand why secure, end-to-end encryption might prove useful to those wishing to circulate depraved images online. That’s why Home Secretary Priti Patel has argued that “things like end-to-end encryption significantly reduce the ability for platforms to detect child sexual abuse”. (Telegraph). 

The fact is that the internet and its World Wide Web derivative is a technology that was designed for the publising and exchange of business and academic information. As a medium for social networking, a vehicle for electronic commerce or anything involving sensitive information or communications related to criminal activity it is not fit for purpose. To make it so simply requires all users to clearly identify themselves and thus become accountable for their online activity. If we want an uncensored, unregulated internet we  must learn to behave responsibly.

MSNBC Doubles Down On Fascist Mission Statements: It's Our Job To Control How People Think... Not Elon Musk's

It has been amusing to observe this week how utterly incensed the 'woke',  leftie hate mobs at Twitter were when they heard that Elon Musk, currently the richest man in the world's bid to buy Twitter, but for people who don't see the funny side of it, an old comment from the ultra left American news channel MSNBC is an important reminder of just how the lefties in the media media and their  globalist billionaire psychopath overlords see their role in modern society.

As hours of coverage and an avalanche of op-eds are unleashed to explain to the masses why they should grab their pitchforks as Elon Musk offers to buy a social media platform at a significant premium for shareholders, this brief exchange between MSNBC presenters from 2017 perfectly summarizes exactly what is wrong with modern socirty.

On MSNBC's breakfast show 'Morning Joe', Mika Brzezinski, referring to President Trump said the following words in her out-loud voice...

"The dangerous edges here are that he is trying to undermine the media, trying to make up his own facts, and it could be that while unemployment and the economy worsen, he could have undermined the messaging so much that he can actually control exactly what people think..."

And then the nail in the 'oops, I just told the truth coffin':

"...and that is our job."

To which the effervescent Joe Scarborough replies:

"Yeah".

And in case you thought that perhaps attitudes had changed in the intervening years and the propagandists at MSNBC had learned something from the hit their ratings have taken due to the utterly biased and distorted coverage on the COVID pandemic and decided gaslighting the public does not win them friends, viewers or advertising revenue, on Friday's 'Morning Joe', Brezinski repeated her delusional claim about the need to control information when raising alarm over how Musk's possible takeover of Twitter might affect the grip of the far left propaganda machine's grip on on social media and thus their ability to shape public opinion, calling a hypothetical Elon Musk takeover a "very dangerous precedent" for America.

"...are there any ways to stop him if he wants to buy Twitter? Are there any guardrails around something like this? Because this could be a very dangerous precedent,"

"He does not believe in the consequences of words," added Brezinki's guest, who had written earlier that "Elon Musk’s attempt to buy Twitter represents a chilling new threat: billionaire trolls taking over social media."

Somewhat bizarrely these people had nothing to say when Amazon founder and far left, 'woke' billionaire psychopaths Jeff Bezon took over The Washington Post, or when former world's richest man Bill Gates acquires controlling interests in numerous influential print and TV news companies. The problem for MSNBC is of course that while the 'woke' left are intent on controlling not only what people say but what they think, Elon Musk, whatever else we might think of him (and I'm not a fan,) is a determined defender of free speech, even if it means allowing people he disagrees with a platform on a site he owns. Other billionaire psychopaths, Twitter's founder Jack Dorsey, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Amazon's Jeff Bezos being the most notable examples as all have been driving forces in the hounding of conservative and libertarian voices from their platforms.

There Jaron Lanier and I were, side by side on my computer screen, in a virtual space that looked a little like a conference room and a little like a movie theater. We could've been jurors, maybe. I was able to approximate rubbing his head. “As you have discovered,” Lanier said, noticing, “you can reach and interact with people a little bit. So there is this shared-space quality.” He was in Berkeley, California, in the hills above the city, in a house that looks out over the bay. I was in Los Angeles. Five minutes ago we were in our own separate video-chat windows, the ones many of us now see as we're going to sleep, our dumb faces staring back at us. Then he had hit some buttons. Now we were together.
Lanier calls this technology Together mode; he helped design it this spring for Microsoft, where he has a post as an in-house seer of sorts. Initially he'd conceived of Together mode as a way to help Stephen Colbert—in whose house band Lanier sometimes performs when he's in New York—figure out how to host his show in front of a remote audience. (Lanier is sometimes credited as the father of virtual reality; he is also sometimes credited as the owner of the world's largest flute, in addition to the many other exotic instruments he collects and expertly plays.) But mostly he was trying to solve, as he's been doing since the early '80s, a problem relating to technology and how humans might use it. In this case: How could we better, more naturally communicate with one another in the middle of a pandemic?
He explained a bit more about how Together mode worked, how it soothed what the medium had previously tended to aggravate. Being side by side, instead of separated—and being able to make eye contact, as we now could—worked on the psychology; it made you a little more playful, a little more relaxed. It might even help build, in the words of the NBA—which swiftly adopted Together mode as a way to project remote fans onto courtside monitors in otherwise empty Florida arenas—“a sense of community.”

“People who are addicted to Twitter,” Lanier said, “are like all addicts—on the one hand miserable, and on the other hand very defensive about it and unwilling to blame Twitter.”

“What I'm hoping,” Lanier said, gesturing around our virtual space, “is that people find a little bit of well-being in it. Like, we can't pretend it'll do that much, because everything sucks, but it's a little something. It should help a bit.” ... Continue reading >>>

The jumped up little shit-for-brains who, thanks to political correctness and the Islamophiliac Labour Party's hatred of the British working class is able to swagger around calling himself The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has incorporated bullying major technology companies such as Facebook and Twitter to do more on the issue of “hate speech,” or face fines and greater regulation. What Khan, a vain little tit at the best of times, is really up to is an attempt to suppress free speech on the net in order to prevent blasphemy against Islam.

Talking to the BBC ahead of the South by Southwest (SXSW) technology festival in Austin, Texas, Khan said that companies must be “chivvied and cajoled to take action.” As far as we can see it is fuck all to do with him, he's Mayor of London, not President of The World.

“We have evolving economies, which means we should have evolving regulations,” he said. “For too long politicians and policymakers have allowed this revolution to take place around us and we’ve had our heads in the sand.” The idiot does not know what he's talking about, but in a greater insanity a few weeks ago he announced that London's Metropolitan Police, a forse accountable to him, whould no longer investigate minor crimes (he did not define 'minor crimes' but we guess he means trivial things like murder, rape, arson, robbery and fraud, and in future would only respond to reports of major crimes (blasphemy against Islam?) and 'hate crime' thus indicating where his racist priorities lie.

He went on to praise German hate speech laws, put in place by Angela Merkel in response to growing resentment at her open-door migration policy, with companies now facing fines up to 50 million euros. “Germany is an example of where the German government said ‘Enough,” he continued. “Unless you take down hate messages, unless you take down fake news, we will fine you’. I want to work with the tech companies, but you have to be responsible,” he added.

What he fails to understand is that since Merkel tried to suppress free speech in Germany by making criticism if Islam a 'hate crime', opposition to mass immigration has risen and anti - Islamification groups have gained strength.

Khan also reiterated his opposition to President Donald Trump, claiming that Trump’s decision to retweet a member far-right activist group Britain First had led to increased levels of abuse directed at him. This would be a major diplomatic faux pas of course, did he not enjoy the protection being Muslim carries in the west. It is beyond bad manners for a visiting politician to comment on the leaders of the host nation.

Project Veritas Exposes Twitter "Shadow Banning", Blocking Opposing Views

We have reported many times that under the Obama admistration in the USA, Internet techology companies, particularly those involved in search and social networking activities, had a too - cosy relationship with The White House and federal agencies, particularly those involved in security and surveillance. In Google's case, this eagerness to cooperate with Obama's authoritarian regime earned it a place at cabinet meetings in The White House. Out of these metings the belief that the government must censor internet content, a policy which has been carried on by Obama appointees under the Trump administration.

In the latest of a series of undercover operations targeting the mainstream media and now Social Media, James O'Keefe of Project Veritas has just dropped a new undercover video which reveals Twitter "shadow banning" and creating algorithms that censor certain ideas.

The video contains a how/why on Twitter "shadow bans" of certain users:

Former Twitter software engineer Abhinav Vadrevu: explains "One strategy is to shadow ban so you have ultimate control. The idea of a shadow ban is that you ban someone but they don't know they've been banned, because they keep posting but no one sees their content."

"So they just think that no one is engaging with their content, when in reality, no one is seeing it. I don't know if Twitter does this anymore."

Meanwhile, Olinda Hassan, a Policy Manager for Twitter’s Trust and Safety team explained on December 15th, 2017 at a Twitter holiday party that the development of a system of "down ranking shitty people" is in the works:

"Yeah. That’s something we’re working on," she tells the camera, "It’s something we’re working on. We’re trying to get the shitty people to not show up. It’s a product thing we’re working on right now."

In the full video (see below) Twitter Content Review Agent Mo Nora explains that Twitter doesn't have an official written policy that targets conservative speech, but rather they were following "unwritten rules from the top":

"A lot of unwritten rules, and being that we’re in San Francisco, we’re in California, very liberal, a very blue state. You had to be… I mean as a company you can’t really say it because it would make you look bad, but behind closed doors are lots of rules.

"There was, I would say… Twitter was probably about 90% Anti-Trump, maybe 99% Anti-Trump."

Meanwhile, Pranay Singh reveals just how creepy Twitter can be by digging into your profile and conversation history to determine whether or not you're a "redneck" and therefore worthy of being banned:

"Yeah you look for Trump, or America, and you have like five thousand keywords to describe a redneck. Then you look and parse all the messages, all the pictures, and then you look for stuff that matches that stuff."

When asked if the majority of the algorithms are targeted against conservative or liberal users of Twitter, Singh said, "I would say majority of it are aimed at silencing Republicans."

Twitter has been long accused of shadow banning and manipulating various metrics of user accounts. As Paul Joseph Watson of InfoWars reported in August, 2016, Twitter was accused of suppressing tweets from then-candidate Trump in the home stretch of the US election, which some have construed as interfering.

Then in October, 2016, Dilbert creator Scott Adams was "shadowbanned" by Twitter, which he noted on his blog:

This weekend I got “shadowbanned” on Twitter. It lasted until my followers noticed and protested. Shadowbanning prevents my followers from seeing my tweets and replies, but in a way that is not obvious until you do some digging.

Why did I get shadowbanned?

Beats me.

But it was probably because I asked people to tweet me examples of Clinton supporters being violent against peaceful Trump supporters in public. I got a lot of them. It was chilling.

Late last week my Twitter feed was invaded by an army of Clinton trolls (it’s a real thing) leaving sarcastic insults and not much else on my feed. There was an obvious similarity to them, meaning it was organized.

At around the same time, a bottom-feeder at Slate wrote a hit piece on me that had nothing to do with anything. Except obviously it was politically motivated. It was so lame that I retweeted it myself. The timing of the hit piece might be a coincidence, but I stopped believing in coincidences this year.

And in March of 2017, Twitter was caught by Ed Dowd - a politically active former BlackRock money manager who noted in early February that Twitter was both "un-retweeting" several of his politically charged posts.

In one instance, Dowd made a decidedly subversive tweet pointing out that the NSA and CIA are "wiretapping" the entire country via continuously archived data collection - a story which Wired magazine broke in 2006 and gained tremendous clarity through the acts of whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Another phenomenon Dowd noticed was that while he would gain followers throughout the day, there was a reliable "purge" of followers in the dead of night, all around the same time. He began keeping track, and though it wasn't happening every night, it penciled out to around half a percent of his followers each time it happened, effectively capping his audience. Ed had questions; why was it almost always the same number of people? Who un-follows someone in the middle of the night? Considering most of Dowd's followers are in North America, the un-followers were likely asleep when it was happening. The logical conclusion was that Twitter had been actively pruning Ed's audience to limit his growth on the platform.

This isn't the first time Twitter has throttled, censored, or banned conservatives who speak their mind. Documentarian, author, and noted Trump supporter Mike Cernovich (@cernovich) tweeted about his own fan base evaporating around the same time as Dowd began experiencing the un-follows

Wikileaks Is About To Expose The Turkish 'Coup': Staged By Erdogan Regime?

Whistleblowers Wikileaks claimed on Monday their site would release hundreds of thousands of documents related to Turkey and the failed military coup attempted Friday, CNET reported. Since the alleged attempt to stage a military coup the Islamist regime of  President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has embarked on a purge of military and government personnel. arresting as many as 50,000 officials deemed to be less than completely enthusiastic in their support of Erdogan's steady transfer of power from the democratically elected government to the increasingly autocratic president and his regime which includes many Erdogan family members in high positions.


The Turkish government, headed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has increasingly ramped up censorship efforts against journalists, lending credibility to Wikileaks suspicions their release may not fully reach Turkish citizens—especially considering the latest leak concerns his ruling party, AKP.
As CNET noted:

“Facebook, Twitter and YouTube were reportedly blocked in Turkey during the attempted coup Friday, but many residents appear to have gotten around the blocks, posting messages and videos, likely using VPNs or other anonymizing services.”

Throughout Monday, Wikileaks continued to promote the release via social media as with this Tweet (AKP is Erdogan's political party):

Turks ask whether WikiLeaks is pro or anti-AKP. Neither. Our only position is that truth is the way forward. 100k+ docs serves all sides.

They then tweeted that instead of 100,000 documents, they would actually be releasing far more. “Our pending release of 100k docs on Turkish political power? Just kidding. The first batch is 300k emails, 500k docs,” they announced.
But just hours later, they alerted followers their website was being attacked. “Our infrastructure is under sustained attack,” they tweeted, alongside the hashtag, #TurkeyPurge.

On Monday however, Wikileaks tweeted their site was under attack:

 “We are unsure of the true origin of the attack. The timing suggests a Turkish state power faction or its allies. We will prevail & publish,"

 Later, the organization remained resolute in its determination to publish the hundreds of thousands of documents. “Coming Tuesday: The#ErdoganEmails: 300 thousand internal emails from Erdo?an’s AKP – through to July 7, 2016,” they tweeted.
 
In spite of the ongoing cyber attacks, Wikileaks eventually announced on Tuesday they had released the first installment of emails, which can be viewed here. The content is from the server of the AKP.

The failed military coup in Turkey last weekend highlighted the deteriorating situation in the country, where President Erdogan has grown increasingly repressive. The Turkish government has also been implicated in the rise of ISIS and has been accused of acting as a conduit to supply arms and ammunition from the USA, Saudi Arabia and Qatar to rebel elements in Syria, carrying on an illegal trade with ISIS  in oil from wells in occupied territory and providing sanctuary  and medical assistance within their borders for etremist guerillas.

The coup, news of which is mired in uncertainties, accusations, and conflicting reports, has left Turkish citizens between a rock and a hard place, support a military regime or an increasingly oppressive democratically-elected leader who has  overseen 50,000 suspensions or detainments of government employees regarding the military’s failed attempt to seize power. It is far from clear whether the coup has been completely crushed and one unconfirmed report during the week suggested forty military helicopters had gone missing from Turkish air bases.

It seems Wikileak’s release of information on Turkish power structures could not come at a more vital time—that is, so long as it reaches the Turkish people. That seems to be down to us new media journalists.
