Mainstream media is today getting its knickers in a twist about something Donald Trump said in a private conversation in 2005. Apparently the thoughts Trump was sharing with a friend could be summed up as expressing a belief that women are shallow creatures and are easily impressed by wealth and power. I've said worse in private conversations with male friends (and can testify to the truth of what The Donald said, when I was earning a lot of money, holding influential positions, wearing designer suits and hand made shirts and shoes and driving upmarket cars, there was never a shortage of attractive women willing to throw themselves at me in spite of my being married. Sorry Liberals and 'progressives' , the world is not the way you would like it to be, and due to a little thing called human nature, never will be.
Most men, by a huge majority I'd guess, have spoken crudely in male company. Women too, crude humour is not exclusive to men. So what was all the fuss about? There are grounds for thinking it was a diversionary tactic to distract from the really big election story.

Wikileaks released a tranche of emails from the account of Hillary Clinton campaign chair John Podesta. There is a lot of damaging information in these, so damaging it should obliterate any chance Hillary had of becoming president, but previous email leaks and ongoing scandals should have finished Clinton ten times over by now. The documents leaked on Friday certainly bestow credence to the argument Bernie Sanders made months ago that Clinton is a self interested, money grubbing cheat and cannot be trusted to govern failrly. On Friday,
WikiLeaks revealed it had possession of nearly 50,000 emails from the email account of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta. More than two thousand of them were published. The Clinton campaign would not confirm the authenticity of the emails, but a series of Podesta tweets seemed to indicate that his email was compromised.
Statements attributed to Clinton, which were gleaned from documents but have yet to be authenticated, were made privately, in speeches to investment banks and other Wall Street operators for which Clinton was paid fees totalling many millions of dollars. The content of the speeches shows her in the worst possible light: dishonest, hypocritical, out of touch, secretive and deeply involved in Wall Street crony capitalism. Thus they validate Bernie Sanders’ criticisms of her during the Democratic primary.
Senator Sanders, who had always presented himself as an independent democratic socialist, led an almost successful challenge to Clinton (it is rumoured that only extensive voter fraud by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic Party National Committee gave the nomination to Clinton. Sanders campaign and his supporters' enthusiasm was based on public frustration and anger at the political establishment's coziness with Wall Street, and the access to lawmakers afforded to corporate business leaders (pay - to - play); the revolving door between regulators and those they regulate, and how Washington’s political class has lost touch with America’s middle class. Much the same story is being played out in Europe of course, with nationalist and anti - immigration parties on the rise from Greece to Britain.
In one email in Podesta’s inbox, first reported by BuzzFeed, the Clinton campaign appears to summarize their candidate’s most shocking statements made during private speeches to Wall Street firms and other business organizations.
Anticipating the possibility of a leak of
private speech transcripts, after the huge fees Clinton had demanded and received for
selling access to a potential president speaking to bankers became a controversial issue during the Democratic primary season, Clinton Research Director Tony Carrk put together a memo with the most damaging quotes she had made in private speeches. Ironically, these were later leaked.
“I represented and worked with so many talented principled people who made their living in finance,” she said in one 2014 speech to Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd, a firm that specializes in complex securities litigation on behalf of investors, according to the email that was sent to Podesta and other senior aides.
In a series of speech excerpts from April 2013 to January 2015, Clinton supported open markets in the Americas; speaks of the need for a “public and private position” while “back room discussions” are taking place; and complained that conflict of interest disclosures were unnecessary for politicians.
For Clinton, it is an embarrassing revelation that strikes to her greatest vulnerability: that she can’t be trusted, doesn’t mean what she says and is too close to the big banks, all at a time when she is struggling to generate enthusiasm among the young progressives who backed Sanders over her in the primary.
Perhaps the most damaging to Clinton—and most validating to Sanders—will be her fawning speeches about Wall Street—to Wall Street. In her remarks, Clinton appears to prove Bernie right. At a Goldman Sachs symposium in 2013, Clinton said that when she began traveling as Secretary of State, people would "yell at me for the United States and our banking system” causing the financial crisis".
In another sound bite, Clinton acknowledges she is out of touch: "I’m kind of far removed" from the struggles of the middle class and “growing sense of anxiety and even anger in the country” because of the fortunes (her word) that she and former President Bill Clinton currently enjoy.
She illustrates this in another speech, when she complains about the need for politicians to avoid conflicts of interest.Well Hillary Clinton, the multimillionaire who says she speaks to the working class, who addresses audiences of the unemployed and under - employed, telling them she understands their problems, even as she is wearing clothes that cost more that a working class family could expect to earn in a year, who accepted donations from defence contractors while serving as Secretary Of State, would know all about conflicts of interest wouldn't she.
