European
natural gas and electricity prices are unlikely to ease in the coming
months ahead of what could be a costly winter season for stressed-out
consumers. The price increases for natgas and power are unusual for this time of year, raising concern prices will remain sticky and eat away wages.
Natgas prices hit a record high last month due to slowing Russian supply causing
a storage crunch on the continent. Then the lack of wind-driven
electricity production forced European utility companies to fire up
natgas turbines to satisfy energy shortfalls. This episode underlines
the precarious state of the continent's energy markets ahead of winter.
The
price shock has been the most evident in the UK as the country learns a
valuable lesson about relying on wind farms. Electricity prices have
more than doubled in September and were seven times higher than at the
same month in 2020.
Power prices across the continent, from France, the Netherlands, and Germany, were also higher.
Weather models forecast cool and dry conditions for Europe this winter could strain natgas supplies even further.
"All
our indicators on the weather and the fuel market side are bullish,"
said Georgi Slavov, head of fundamental research of broker Marex
Spectron.
Bloomberg's Javier Blas writes,
"This is simply incredible: UK day-ahead baseload electricity prices
jump to a fresh all-time high of £354 per MWh on N2EX. Intraday prices
for peak demand are much, much higher. To put into perspective, that's
700% higher than the ~£45 average 2010-2020 price."
Blas also tweeted: I hear some saying that Europeans are willing to accept higher electricity prices if it leads to a lower-carbon world. The above suggest that's 1) no true, 2) governments will see lower tax income, with less money for green projects, 3) lower retail prices means higher demand
He
notes commodity inflation has moved into "demand destruction mode --
with that, it comes the risk of political intervention (verbal or real)
to force prices down. We saw that with China's statement on oil last
week (and multiple times in 2008)."
Stefan Konstantinov, senior
energy economist at data firm ICIS, said surging power prices "took a
lot of people by surprise," and if "this were to happen in winter when
we've got significantly higher demand, then that presents a real issue
for system stability."
The feedback loop has already affected the
broader economy, with European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde
recently saying energy markets are a significant driver in higher inflation.
Maybe
Europe will beg Russia to accelerate the launch of its controversial
Nord Stream pipeline; clearly, without it, gas prices would continue
surging, further pushing up power prices.
Europe has been
pursuing renewable energy as a means of mitigating "climate change," but
the realization is that when the wind stops blowing, there's not enough
energy.
This is just more evidence of out-of-control inflation
rippling through commodity markets and crushing the working-poor.
Europeans are becoming furious and have already protested utility
companies.

The British government will not mandate vaccine
passports for nightclubs, cinemas, and other large public venues in
England after all, Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced on Sunday.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government has backtracked on
controversial plans to introduce vaccine passports domestically and is
set to end draconian emergency powers given to the state under the
Coronavirus Act, in a major concession to anti-lockdown factions within
the Conservative Party.
Appearing on the BBC’s Andrew Marr programme on Sunday, Health Secretary Sajid Javid said in reference to vaccine passports: “I’m pleased to say we will not be going ahead with plans.”
“We shouldn’t be doing things for the sake of it,” Javid added.
The Health Secretary also said that while he currently cannot make
any firm commitments, he does not expect another lockdown to be imposed
on the country, saying: “I’m not anticipating any more lockdowns… I just
don’t see how we get to another lockdown”.
The move represents a stark U-turn from the government, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson declaring
in July that “By the end of September, when all over-18s will have had
their chance to be doubled-jabbed, we’re planning to make full
vaccination the condition for entry to nightclubs and other venues where

AstraZeneca vaccine designer says Covid boosters are unnecessary for most people

The designer of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine has called for
surplus doses in the UK to be sent to countries with lower levels of
vaccination, calling plans for a booster program unnecessary for the
majority of immunised people.
Professor Dame Sarah
Gilbert – who also developed the universal flu vaccine – expressed doubt
over the vaccination of healthy children and booster shots for people
who are still well-immunised from their first two shots in an interview with the Telegraph newspaper on Thursday.
Professor Gilbert urged the UK to instead send their doses to countries in need, declaring, “We
need to get vaccines to countries where few of the population have been
vaccinated so far. We have to do better in this regard. The first dose
has the most impact.”
“The immuno-compromised and elderly
will receive boosters. But I don’t think we need to boost everybody.

policy. It was the ninth consecutive weekend that huge protests have disrupted life in French cities. Today's protest quickly descended
into violence with widespread clashes between demonstrators and police.
Four separate large-scale
demonstrations tookplace in Paris on Saturday. Crowds of people blocked busy roads and business districts as they
marched through the streets in various parts of the city surrounded by cordons of police officers in riot gear.
The protesters waved French national flags and placards that read: ‘health is not a business’. Some flags of leftist and even Royalist groups were seen in the crowds as well.
Large numbers of paramilitary police were deployed around Paris, particularly at the
Champs-Elysees and Wagram Avenue in the city’s northwest, where activists on social media had planned a large event. The total number of demonstrators in that area estimated at around 30,000 people on the
streets by midday
Videos posted on social media showed Paris streets and boulevards blocked by huge crowds.
Tensions quickly boiled over in the crowded streets as footage
published on social media showed police attacking citizens with tear gas and batons and protesters kicking and verbally
assaulting police officers. One video showed
the crowd attacking the police with various objects.
Clashes erupted near the Champs-Elysees in particular, as the police
prevented participants of one of the demonstrations from entering the
avenue in which the French presidential palace is situated, the French media reported.

mid-July after President Emmanuel Macron’s government introduced a n unconstitutional rule that made presenting a vaccination certificate or negative
Covid-19 test obligatory for those wishing to visit a restaurant,
theater, cinema and shopping mall or travel on a long-distance train.
The government measures also involved mandatory vaccination for medics,
which is opposed by many hospital staff members and the trade unions that represent them. The government
insisted that the measures are needed to encourage people to get the
jabs and eventually avoid another lockdown.
