"We Are Not Slaves": Farmers In Italy, Spain, & Poland Join Dutch Protests

 

Farmers in Italy, Spain and Poland have joined Dutch farmers in protest of 'green' government regulations that will decimate the industry by forcing them to reduce their use of nitrogen fertilizer compounds.

"We are not slaves, we are farmers," said Italian farmers, who drove tractors through the streets of Milan and blocked city traffic. 

Farmers in Spain join colleagues in Netherrlands, Italy vand Poland in protests against EU 'green' mandates that will destroy their businesses.

 

 According to the Morning Star, "Italian farmers face an imminent crisis due to a severe drought that has seen a third of agricultural produce placed at risk."

The country’s agricultural minister Steafano Patuanelli told parliament earlier this week that Italy faces a further 40 per cent loss of water resources in the coming decades.

Farmers say they have lost around €3 billion as a result of the emergency and are being hit hard by rising fuel prices with costs rocketing as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.

In Spain, farmers in Badajoz, Granada and Albacete paraded their tractors down the street in solidarity with the foreign farmers, as well as national protests at home over a lack of food and gasoline, according to EuroWeekly News.

And in Poland, farmers came to Warsaw last weekend to protest against inflation and other government actions.

The protests have led to empty supermarket shelves in the Netherlands, as tractors and other agricultural machinery have blocked warehouses, preventing their shipment - a move which Prime Minister Mark Rutte has mobilized state police against in an attempted crackdown.

With the Nord Stream 1 pipeline closed for maintenance, with the possibility that President Putin will not allow it to reopen at the end of the scheduled 10 days downtime in retaliation for the EU's continued support or Ukraine in their conflict with Russia, Germany is facing an unprecedented crisis that could erase the prosperity Germans have grown accustomed to, warned Rainer Dulger, head of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations.

“We are facing the biggest crisis the country has ever had. We have to be honest and say: First of all, we will lose the prosperity that we have had for years,” Dulger told the Süddeutsche Zeitung regarding the consequences of a gas shortage to Germany's business and domesticv premises.

While many people in politics, business and the media are urging more government intervention to help prop up the German economy, Dulger argues that, the fewerthere are state interventions , the better. He says that when it comes to the economy, private businesses always do better than the government.

However, he does believe some measures need to be implemented to provide support for people being thrust into poverty because of rising prices and business closures or short time working.

“More net earnings from the gross amount must now arrive into every citizen’s account,” he claimed, stressing the importance of not reducing the net income of the citizens in a veiled appeal for tax cuts, and policiesensuring the fair redistribution of profits generated during the crisis.

Dulger is not the only one warning of a crisis in Germany, a crisis which is already in train. Economy Minister Robert Habeck too has warned of a “catastrophic winter” should Russia threat to cut off the gas supply be carried out.

According to him, Germany will face a “crucial test that we haven’t faced for a long time.”

Other experts predicti mass bankruptcies, inflation, and energy rationing that will send “shockwaves” through the German economy as a result of a deepening of the energy crisis which was triggered by the failure of idiotic 'net zero' pledges and green virtue signalling and is being exacerbated by knock on effects of the Ukraine conflict and the EU response.

The Bavarian Business Association (VBW) warned that as many as 5.6 million jobs across Germany could be lost in the case of a gas supply stoppage from Russia.

According to the association’s analysts, the loss of gas imports from Russia gas could also reduce the country’s economic output by 12.7 percent, with immediate abandonment of the raw material hitting the glass, iron, and steel industries particularly hard; losses in these sectors would be almost 50 percent.

Dulger sees the current situation as being due to the lack of capacity to be self-sufficient in energy production, as a result of abandoning both coal and nuclear power to appease the country's powerful green movement. For too long, Germany had disregarded something that former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt warned about in the 1970s.

When deliveries of gas to Russia began at the time, Schmidt said: “We can do it, but we must not depend on Russian gas for more than 30 percent.”

Economic Fallout From Soaring Dollar Could Trigger Summer Of Discontent

As part of a perfect storm of crises, energy starvation, food shortages and runaway inflation, and with the central banks of the world's most powerful economic nations raising interest rates to protect their currencies, something had to break. Sri Lanka has been first, its recent default on foreign debt and the collapse of the government in the face of popular riots against food shortages and rising prices causing  President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to flee the country yesterday has been the most drastic effect to date.

Sri Lanka is a small, poor nation which is why it is one of the first to be hit. More significant perhaps it the farmers protest in The Netherlands against rising prices, energy shortages and EU environmenta policy which as we reported recently is seen as an attack on the agricultural sector of Netherlands and other member states' agricultural sector as UK magazine Farmers Weekly reported.

The Dutch farmers are angered by government support for an EU policy that will require them to use less fertilizer and reduce livestock herd sizes. Amsterdam's Schiphol airport has been blockaded and KLM, the Dutch arm of Air France, advised travellers to use public transport, rather than cars, to reach the airport, as farmers' activist groups cordinating their protest through social media used tractors to block roads.

Several major highways across the country have been blocked by convoys of slow moving tractors and farm vehicles.

At the heart of the protest are targets introduced last month to halve harmful nitrogen compounds by 2030. It is the latest attempt to tackle a problem that has plagued the country for years. The government says that emissions of nitrogen oxide and ammonia, which are produced by livestock, need to be drastically cut - particularly near a protected network of habitats for endangered species that stretches across the EU.

The reforms are expected to include reducing livestock and buying up some farms whose animals produce large amounts of ammonia.

Farmers argue they are being unfairly targeted, giving them little hope for the future of their profession.

This latest authoritarian and economically suicidal policy imposed on member states governments by the EU is the latest in what is starting to look like an attack by the ruling elites on civilisation.

 Bad economic policy, the Covid-19 non pandemic and, ultimately the global food and energy crisis resulting in serious shortages and exacerbated by the EU's response to the conflict in Ukraine, tipped the country over the edge. Reports are now filtering in that the protest movement  has spread to other EU nations, in a show of solidarity, German, Italian, Spanish and Polish farmers have launched protests, in what is fast becoming an EU-wide campaign against “anti-farming” policies.

But the crisis in Sri Lanka also points to broader economic malaise arising from currency volatility. For one, the strong dollar has its mirror image in a sharp depreciation of many currencies around the world. There is hardly any developing/emerging market currency that has escaped the stronger dollar. Bear in mind also that dollar-claims (loans and debt securities) on the non-financial sector in emerging markets and developing countries reached a record of nearly USD 4 trillion last year, after more than a decade of easy monetary policy and risibly low interest rates. As such currency volatility in developing markets is something is unlikely to disappear in the foreseeable future.

The dollar strength is due to US Central Bank The Federal Reserve raising interest rates aggressively. The Bank of England has followed suite with more modest rate increases. 

Of course the biggest eye-catcher in recent days has been the euro, which yesterday dipped below the psychologically important level of parity with the US$. It’s understandable that investors are running for cover by transferring their holdings to cash with stock exchange indexes around the world sinking on whether the next step by central banks will be even bigger hike by  after its last 75bp and the ECB not even having started to raise interest rates yet even though this is making the effect of sanctions on energy imports from Russia even worse for Germany, Netherlands, France and Italy which due to the EU's misguided war on fossil fuels in pursuit of the idiotic 'net zero' target for reduction of Carbon Dioxide emissions.

The purchasing power of the dollar is not nearly as strong as it once was, and as a result our standard of living is rapidly going down.  The overall rate of inflation has been rising faster than our paychecks have been for quite a while, and this is causing a tremendous amount of pain for millions of U.S. consumers.  Unfortunately, this isn’t going to change any time soon.  The inflation monster that our leaders have created will continue to rage even as our economy plunges into a severe recession.  I relentlessly warned that the trillions of dollars that our leaders were pumping into the system would cause enormous problems down the road, and now we are trapped in an economic nightmare with no easy way out.

On Wednesday, we learned that the rate of inflation in the United States jumped even higher last month…

Shoppers paid sharply higher prices for a variety of goods in June as inflation kept its hold on a slowing U.S. economy, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday.

The consumer price index, a broad measure of everyday goods and services related to the cost of living, soared 9.1% from a year ago, above the 8.8% Dow Jones estimate. That marked the fastest pace for inflation going back to November 1981.

Of course the way that inflation is calculated today is much different from the way that it was calculated back in the 1980s.  If the way that inflation was calculated had not been changed, the official inflation rate would be much higher right now.

Macron's Minority Government Defeated on Vaccine Passport Reintroduction

French President Emmanuel Macron suffered a humiliating setback in parliament after his flagship vaccine passport scheme was defeated in the French National Assembly where, inconveniently for little Emmanuel's authoritarian instincts, his government does not command a majority.

               

Macron’s government, which competed throughout the two and a half year COVID pandemic hoax with Boris Johnson's supposedly libertarian UK administration for the distinction of imposing the most repressive and fascistic infringements of citizens' personal liberty and human rights,  intended to extend the 'show me your papers, swinehund' policy  which require anyone entering France, going into any entertainment venue or restaurant or travelling on public transport to show proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test.

However, the right-wing populist National Rally (RN) led by Macron's arch enemy Marine Le Pen, the hard-left La France Insoumise (LFI) and the right-wing Republicains (LR) all united to vote against the policy.

Macron’s government lost the vote by a margin of 219 votes to 195.

“The bill’s defeat was met with wild cheering and a standing ovation from opposition lawmakers, in footage that was widely circulated on social media,” reports the Telegraph.

The bill was one of the first put to parliament by the new minority government, and shows that the new government will find it incredibly difficult to get new laws passed in the country.  Macron, whose presidency in his first term was incredibly unpopular in France and on several occasions triggered civil unrest due to Marcon's assaults on the French tradition of liberty, equality and fraternity, looks to be facing an even tougher ride this time.

Elisabeth Borne, the French Prime Minister, condemned the vote.

“The situation is serious. By joining together to vote against the measures to protect the French against Covid, LFI, LR and RN prevent any border control against the virus. After the disbelief on this vote, I will fight so that the spirit of responsibility wins in the Senate,” she tweeted.

As previously highlighted, the French Minister of Health has admitted that vaccine passports are a “disguised” form of mandatory vaccines, despite President Macron claiming vaccination “will not be compulsory.”

On the first day the new program was in place, police in Paris were visibly patrolling bars and cafes demanding customers show proof they’ve had the jab.

It later emerged that many businesses are refusing to enforce the scheme.

EU Crisis? Euro currency falls below parity with US$ as Italian Government collapses

Italy's volatile politics plunged the EU into a new crisis today  July 14, after its coalition government collapsed. One of the ruling coalition parties, the 5-Star Movement, had earlier abstained in a vote in the Senate on a relief bill for soaring energy prices in the country that are driving many people into poverty.

The vote tied to a confidence vote, and Giuseppe Conte the head of M5S stated yesterday, Wednesday, July 13, that his party would not support the government in either of today’s votes.In the even the government survived the confidence vote but only because of a large numer of abstentions with members of other small parties joinging the Five Star contingent and declaring they could no longer back the ruling coalition.

In a statement released by Mario Draghi the Italian Prime Minister, he announced to his cabinet that he will resign from his post: “I will tender my resignation to the president of the republic this evening. The national unity coalition that backed this government no longer exists”. Draghi's coalition had been in power since January 2021 but had been a lame duck government unable to pass major legislation because they depended on the support of the anti - EU Five Star Movement.

Sergio Mattarella, the Italian President,  will now have to make the decision of either accepting or rejecting the PM’s resignation. Word is the President has indicated he will reject it, but that would result in an unwilling leader heading a government that cannot govern.  In what seems the most likely outcome of this crisis an election could be scheduled as early as September.

Giuseppe Conte, the Five Star party leader and the second-biggest group in Draghi’s coalition, said he could no longer back Draghi’s cross-party government, which he accused of not doing enough to help families battered by spiralling food and energy costs.

“I have a strong fear that September will be a time when families will face the choice of paying their electricity bill or buying food,” he said after a day of frenetic political consultations.

Crucially, as The Financial Times reports, the implosion of Italy's national unity government, which could trigger earlier elections that were set for spring next year, would come at a sensitive time for the European Union, already enmired in three crises, the cost of living explosion, the war in Ukraine and attendant food and fuel shortages and runaway inflation as a result of the loonytoons COVID response.

Europe is Flouting its Own Sanctions Because it Has to

The situation in Europe is going from bad to worse.

Inflation is still rising in almost every EU country, with Estonia now logging a rate of 22%. In Russia, meanwhile, inflation fell by 1 percentage point in the month of June. And Russians are used to rising prices; inflation there is the highest since 2015. Inflation in Germany, by contrast, is the highest since the 1970s.

This morning, the Euro reached parity with the dollar, having declined by 12% since the start of the year. But that’s not the only exchange rate shifting against Europe’s interests. As the chart below indicates, the Euro is also way down against the rouble. Before Russia’s invasion, one Euro was worth 85 roubles. It’s now worth less than 60.

And the price of natural gas continues to climb, heaping pressure on consumers and businesses alike. It’s worth putting the recent spike into context to show just how high prices are, relative to what Europeans are used to. The chart below plots the benchmark EU gas price over the last ten years – it’s currently 900% higher than in the mid-2010s.  

In case you thought we’d seen the worst of it, there’s more bad news. According to Javier Blas (Bloomberg’s energy man) Europe’s natural gas crisis is “worse than it looks”. He argues that just before the winter “Moscow will completely turn off the tap” – an outcome the market “hasn’t priced yet”. Indeed, the head of the IEA has warned that, “This winter in Europe will be very, very difficult.”

As I’ve noted before, energy prices were rising even before the war in Ukraine – thanks to supply chain disruption during the pandemic, and the shuttering of too many oil refineries. Yet sanctions against Russia have undoubtedly exacerbated the problem.

At present, Europe is in the odd position of having sanctioned one major Russian commodity (oil), while it continues to buy large quantities of another (gas). In fact, it’s stranger than that: as EU leaders ramp up sanctions on Russian oil, they denounce Russia for “weaponizing” natural gas. They seem to be saying: ‘It’s unconscionable for us to buy oil from Russia; but it’s also unconscionable for Russia not to sell us gas’.

Needless to say, this doesn’t make any sense. Given the prospect of a major recession if Europe doesn’t put a lid on energy prices, you might ask: why on earth are we persisting with these sanctions?

Should The New UK Prime Minister abandon Net Zero?

It is not just the UK, the whole world is facing a crisis energy and food supplies. Though mainstream media, owned and controlled by a few corporations that are fully signed up to the globalist agenda of the billionaire psychopaths who have used their immense wealth and their corrupt and unethical influence over governments and political figures is still trying to push the COVID scare and the narative that the environment is under imminent threat from Carbon Dioxide emitted by human activity, the fact is that that instead of leading the transition to cleaner world, 'green energy' policies and the politicisation of science have plunged the world into a perfect storm of inadequate and failing energy generation and distribution systems, food shortages due to over reliance on technology in agriculture and the growing threat of global war.

Energy insecurity and the consequent doubling of our energy bills is directly linked to our misguided efforts to abandon reliable, energy intense fossil fuels in favour of intermittent and unpredictable generation technologies such as wind turbines and solar panels.

And yet governments, their tame scientists whose research ALWAYS produces the results the billionaire psychopaths have paid in advance for, and the media, the function of which is no longer to report accurately but instead to shape public opinion, absolutely refuse to abondon the idiotic 'net zero' pledges made by politicians in response to emotional blackmail by fifteen year old retards and unwashed environmental activist crusties as if electricity is the only thing we get from oil and natural gas. 

Omitting to tell us that a world without fossil fuel would be a world without plastics, detergents and cosmetics, many of the cvhemicals and pharmaceuticals essential to modern life, and without domestic heating and artificial light, the UK, in an orgy of virtue signalling from politicians of all shades has spent vast amounts of taxpayers money to lead efforts to protect the Congo Basin rainforest in central Africa, because the wholly unscientific results of mathematical modelling predict a humanitarian disaster should that ecosystem be lost (but do not explain exactly how or why the rainforest will disappear unless we long suffering taxpayers lavish money on saving it.

 The virtue signalling habit at the top runs deep. It is the UK that leads the world in sacrificing domestic food production for the sake of 'rewilding' (paying farmers to let good arable and pasture land return to a wilderness state,) while shipping our food supplies half way round the world by (fossil fuel driven) ship or aircraft. It was the UK that demanded and secured historic pledges from G7 member states on nature finance last month. It is the UK that leads coalitions of more than 100 countries calling for protection of 30 per cent of the world’s land and ocean by 2030.

The propaganda narratives of mainstream media suggest that voters care pasionately about issues like climate change. Opinion polling has consistently shown that fighting to save the environment through policies like 'net zero' are top of most people's priorities.But polls take the views of small samples of the population and respondents are not chosen randomly but cherry picked. Listen to the conversations in any  public bar, clubhouse or look at the comments in any uncensored internet discussion thread and a very different picture emerges.

If the Conservative party don't ditch "Net Zero" they will lose the next election catastrophically. Not only will the 'red wall' be rebuilt higher and stronger but the 'blue wall', that swathe of conservative safe seats that stretches from the south west to the shores of Dover will collapse too.

It's well accepted in serious engineering and science disciplines that computed models or simulations/predictions (particularly when using extrapolated rather than interpolated data) have little to no validity unless proper validations to real data measurements have taken place. In the case of climate change models the validation has not been done properly because of unavailable/unreliable real measured data in a time frame of more than a couple of hundred years during which only some reliable, consistent measurements have been available. Matching of models before this time frame, especially going back tens of thousands of years (which is necessary if one wishes to know the long term behaviour or any potential correlation of temp and CO2) is fraught with difficulties because the methods of matching - tree rings and/or ice samples produce perceived results which are open to 'interpretation' (could be read as manipulation) due to temp/CO2 data potentially being out of phase by thousands of years, and the unclear understanding of feedback loops. I.e. whilst there is an apparent correlation with CO2 content and temp it's not completely clear which is leading which. Hardly a 'settled' science, and certainly not a reliable tool for informing government policies.

That is why the cost of energy has spiralled and is now so exorbitant

The reason we are now being fleeced for our energy is that Barmy governments around the world have for years been strangling new fossil fuel projects because of the AGW scam and because Klaus Schwab has farted and they have inhaled his odious neo - Nazi nonsense about the Great Reset. The first state casualty So far is Sri Lanka which has bankrupted itself after banning artificial fertilizer use by its farmers .

Our climate is driven principally by the Sun and the IPCC acknowledges that.

CO2 levels follow global temperature, which determines how much CO2 is released from the seas and rotting vegetation, resulting in global greening, which tends to absorb CO2.

Also note the UN WMO statement that the economic slowdown (due to lockdowns) had “no discernible impact” and that CO2 concentration “rose in 2020”, despite the dramatic fall in human emissions.

It seems that there was around 3,210 Gt of CO2 in the atmosphere. in 2018 and around 750Gt of CO2 is added to it pa - about 6Gt of which (0.8%) is from human activities.

So the 1% emitted by the UK equates to around 0.06Gt tonnes of CO2 pa. Thus the UK contributes 0.06/750 = 0.0008% of the annual CO2 increase.

Put another way, the annual increase in atmospheric CO2 levels is 12,500 times what the UK emits.

Also if the Greenhouse Effect (GHE) is influenced more by water vapour than by CO2.then the impact of human emissions on the GHE is even smaller in % terms.

No wonder physicist Prof Richard Lindzen said that “The influence of mankind on climate is trivially true and numerically insignificant.”

Yet £5 trillion is to be spent to eliminate the UK’s contribution of less than 1/12,500th of the annual global rise in CO2 - causing more poverty by totally trashing what is left of our economy after the COVID fiasco, driving more businesses overseas - where they will emit more CO2.

Sometimes I despair for the future of society in all the developed nations — years of indoctrination with left wing ideology in education have taken their toll on our civilisation leaving us with a substantial proportion of the population able to recognise the names of words with words but confused about the meanings and concepts these words, individually or when strung together, are expressing.

If this is party of the long term plan to disrupt society, divide communities and demographic groups and render 'We The People' incapable of resisting the imposition of an authoritarian world government by the business, academic and financial elites then it seems to be working perfectly. Meaning of words are changed, some words are fobidden, the right of free speech is under threat, and arguments about irrelevancies such as gay rights or the right to choose what gender we are, regardless of biology (the modern equivalent of “how many angels can dance on the head of a pin”) obsess the media and political debate while democracy, human rights, individual liberty and both national and personal sovereignty are under incessant attack by idealogues who think they are left wing but in reality are to the right of Roman Emperor Caligula. The Great Reset sweeps all before it as it cruises to ultimate victory.

At least that’s how its supposed to go. Fukuyama’s “The End Of History” was the road map and all we had to do was follow it towards the bright Utopia that was the promise of the future. In reality what happened is that everyone ignored what the Marxists call “contradictions”, essentially the disconnect between ideology and reality, because they were making so much money and instead of dealing with the problem they just papered over the cracks with propaganda (and applied a bit of force here and there where people stubbornly refused to drink the KoolAid). Eventually the contradictions became so glaring that people became unsettled — reality just wasn’t matching expectation. The ordinary people were getting poorer and poorer and their freedoms were being eroded, while the rich got richer and richer, and as always did whatever they wanted to. And the people, the masses (horrible Marxist term but it shows what anelitist gobshite Karl Marx really was,) wanted to know why.

A lifetime of propaganda had drilled into far too many people the “Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad” ideology of the left that George Orwell satirised in his novella Animal Farm by portraying the leftist elite as pigs, so they couldn’t reach for a political solution. 

This was by the plan of course, since we were all told repeatedly in Britain “There Is No Alternative” and there was repeated and concerted attacks on anyone who had the temerity to question the system. So peoples’ frustration and anger were turned inwards, society splintering into competing groups, all arguing about who had the most access to the crumbs falling from the table. Along with this was the rise of outlandish conspiracy theories, explanations that provided patterns heuristically to explain how ‘they’ were doing it to ‘us’. But all the while the system ground on with by now no effective opposition — There Is No Alternative.

The good news is that we in the West might be completely out of our collective trees on our KoolAid but we’re not the world. Think about it — why do we invent enemies out of societies that don’t threaten us? Why do we threaten them? Because they’re challenging our “Rules Based Order” — our hegemony is under threat, and they’re also proving that there are alternatives out there.

Avreport to Financial Times  confirms G that as we have warned (and been called conspiracy theorists and Putin supporters for our trouble,) Germany is now rationing fuel for heating, dimming street lights and closinf public swimming pools as the impact of its energy crunch brought about by the failure of 'green' energy policies and its sanctions on Russia and their retaliatory actions arising from the war in Ukraine start to hit hard. Everything from industry to offices, leisure centers and residential homes is being subjected to pressures.

Germany's creeping paralysis is exacerbated by the huge increase in gas prices triggered by Russia’s move last month to sharply reduce supplies to Germany. Russian retaliation for EU sanctions has plunged Europe’s biggest economy into the worst energy crisis since the oil price shock of 1973 (see "What's Unfolding In Europe In Recent Days Is A Fresh Big Negative Supply Shock")

With electricity prices rising to new, record levels almost every day, gas importers and utilities are fighting for survival while consumer bills are going through the roof, with some warning of imminent hyperinflation and warnings of a return to the days of wheelbarrows full of cash that resulted from similar mismanagement of the economy under the Weimar Republic in the 1920s, a social catastrophe that triggered the rise of the Nazis.

“The situation is more than dramatic,” said Axel Gedaschko, head of the federation of German housing enterprises GdW. “Germany’s social peace is in great danger.”

Unfortunately, as tensions over Russia’s war in Ukraine escalate with NATO, Washington and the EU seemingly set on a course for all out war with Russia, German officials fear the situation could quickly get worse. On Monday July 11, Russia is shutting down its main pipeline to Germany, Nord Stream 1, for 10 days of scheduled maintenance. Many in Berlin fear it will never reopen.

Commenting on the infamous July 22 day when Russian  is expected to resume flowing, DeutscheBank's Jim Reid writes that "while we all spend most of our time thinking about a global recession, I suspect what happens to Russian gas in H2 is potentially an even bigger story. Of course by July 22nd parts may have be found and the supply might start to normalise. Anyone who tells you they know what is going to happen here is guessing but as minimum it should be a huge focal point for everyone in markets."

The bank also warns that "if the gas shutoff is not resolved soon this would lead to a worsening energy disruption with material effects on economic growth, and of course much higher inflation."

Anticipating the worst case outcome, Germany last month took its first step towards rationing gas when economy minister Robert Habeck activated the second stage of the country’s gas emergency plan. “The situation on the gas market is tense and unfortunately we can’t guarantee that it will not get worse,” he said on Tuesday. “We have to be prepared for the situation to become critical.”

Habeck, who says he is now taking shorter showers, has appealed to the population to save energy — and municipalities and property owners have heeded the call.

Earlier today, Vonovia, the country’s largest residential landlord, said it would be lowering the temperature of its tenants’ gas central heating to 17C between 11pm and 6am. It said the measure would save 8 per cent in heating costs.

A housing association in the Saxon town of Dippoldiswalde, near the Czech border, went a step further this week, saying it was rationing the supply of hot water to tenants. From now on they can only take hot showers between 4am-8am, 11am-1pm and 5pm-9pm.

“As we announced in our general meeting, we have to save for the winter,” a notice in the affected blocks reads.

Such measures could become routine in the coming weeks.

Some have already taken measures. The district of Lahn-Dill, near Frankfurt, is switching off the hot water in its 86 schools and 60 gyms from mid-September. a The city of Düsseldorf has temporarily closed a massive swimming pool complex, the Münster-Therme. Meanwhile, Berlin has turned down the thermostat on open-air swimming pools, reducing their temperature by 2 degrees. In western Germany, Cologne is dimming its street lighting to 70 per cent of full strength from 11pm.

Residential customers are also taking action, reactivating wood-burning stoves and fireplaces. Sales of firewood, wood pellets and coal, as well as of gas canisters and cartridges, have shot up.
