Victory For The Farmers - EU Drops Net Zero Targets For Agriculture After Farmers’ Protests

The European Union has backed down on Net Zero targets for agriculture, including drastic cuts in fertiliser and pesticide use and a recommendation that people eat less meat, following widespread protests from farmers. The Telegraphhas moreA demand to reduce nitrogen, methane and other emissions linked to farming by almost a third has been removed from a wider Brussels plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040.

On Tuesday, Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, also proposed withdrawing the EU’s plan to halve the use of pesticides, calling it a “symbol of polarisation”.

“Our farmers deserve to be listened to,” she told the European Parliament.

“I know that they are worried about the future of agriculture and their future as farmers. But they also know that agriculture needs to move to a more sustainable model of production so that their farms remain profitable in the years to come.”

A recommendation urging EU citizens to eat less meat was also removed from the plan.

The concessions came amid mounting demonstrations by farmers in Belgium, France, Germany and Italy ahead of this year’s EU elections.

Spanish Farmers Step Up Protests In Line With France, Germany And Netherlands

Farmers in Spain have joined their counterparts in France, Germany and many other EU member states as the stepped up their protests across the country against EU green and globalist policies which are driving up costs and restricting productivity for European farmers while making importation of foods and agricultural products from non - EU countries easier.

Like farmers elsewhere in the EU, they are demanding more flexibility from the European Union in its regulation of farmers in member states, particularly in policies related to 'net zero' which are having a catastrophic effect on farm profitability, tighter controls on the produce of non-EU countries and more help from their government.

In several regions, the farmers tractors blocked roads and caused severe disruption to motorists.

A large demonstration is planned for in central Madrid later this month.

Today (Tuesday 6 Feb 2024), we learn from the newsfeeds that farmers took to the streets of towns in the agricultural areas in Spain's northern provinces, as convoys of tractors, hooting their horns, flying Spanish flags and festooned with placards calling on the government to stand up to the unelected  EU bureaucrats who are imposing these rules on governments.

The farmers also protested in the north-eastern region of Catalonia, the southern region of Andalusia and Extremadura in the west. The farmers share similar grievances with their counterparts in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and other countries that have been protesting recently.

They complain that regulations which form part of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) but are now linked to the WEF's great reset and the Green Blob's dreams of a Carbon Dioxide free dead planet, which along with high fuel and energy costs, make it difficult for them to make a profit.

"The costs, when it comes to producing wheat and barley, are very high," said Esteban, a cereal farmer who preferred not to give his surname who was protesting in Aranda de Duero. "You've got to pay for fertiliser, pesticides, fuel - it's killing us. We have to pay very high prices and yet we sell at low prices."

”Here the battle over democracy in Europe becomes part of a far wider struggle across the world. In 2024, some four billion people across more than 60 countries are due to vote in national elections, and the ones for the European Parliament. We might imagine that the world’s biggest-ever carnival of democracy is something to celebrate. But not, apparently, for the political and media elites atop our alleged Western democracies.

These elitists are terrified of the prospect of billions of people refusing to do as they are told and instead voting as they see fit. ‘Democracy’ is all very well so long as it suits the interests of those with the kratos; but if the demos take democracy too literally seeks to assert their will, that’s an entirely different matter. As one former member of President Barack Obama’s administration put it, they believe that you can have “too much of a good thing” and that Western society “might be a healthier democracy if it were a slightly less democratic one.” For some liberals in high places these days it seems that, where popular democracy is concerned, less really could be more.

It should now be clear that, yes, democracy is indeed under threat in 2024. But the danger to European democracy comes from above, not below. The Brussels elites are determined to hold back the democratic tide.

That’s why they have spent years politically threatening and financially blackmailing democratically-elected conservative governments in Hungary and Poland, hiding behind talk of the ‘rule of law’ to disguise the attempt to enforce the rule of unelected judges and bureaucrats. Having played their part in installing EU lackey Donald Tusk as Poland’s prime minister, and turned a blind eye to the new regime’s purge of its political opponents, Brussels officials are now making plans to wreak havoc on the Hungarian economy in order to bring its prime minister Viktor Orbán to heel; and if that fails, to strip Hungary (and any other dissident nation) of its democratic right to vote ‘no’ in European Council meetings. In the eyes of the high priests of EU conformism, Mr. Orban has committed the cardinal sin of repeatedly winning elections on a platform of ‘illiberal democracy’ that refuses to accept mass migration at Hungary’s borders or LGBTQ ideology in its schools.”

While the farmers' protests in France have entered a quieter phase after the government of Emmanuel Macron caved in to some of the agricultural workers most significant demands with a caveat from the French Farmers Union that they were ready to do it all again if the government did not deliver on its promises, in Germany things seemed to be getting even more heated over the weekend.

Farmers in Germany blocked roads around the  country’s busiest airport on Saturday as protests over prices and red tape spread across the continent. Hundreds of tractors were deployed to block the streets leading to Frankfurt Airport after a fuel subsidy cut was passed by the German parliament on Friday.

Farmers in Germany have been engaged in massive protests throughout January following a statement by Olaf Scholz’s  government that it would cut close to a billion euros in farm subsidies in response to a domestic budget crisis.

Several huge protests recently gridlocked the streets of the nation's capital and other large cities and forced Berlin into concessions that included rowing back completely on a plan to make farmers pay road tax on farm vehicles. However, as we see so often with globalist led governments that give with one hand and immediately snatch back with the other.

This was certainly the case when Scholz's far left coalition first reversed the plan to charge road tax on farm vehicles and then quickly neutered that concession by cutting fuel subsidy. Germany’s farmers’ union has signalled that it will only stop protesting once the subsidy cuts have been completely reversed.

Roadblocks by German farmers were synchonised with similar protests across Europe, as farmers in Poland, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and Italy joined the movement,  blocking roads and disrupting business and social life to draw attention to what they see as excessive EU environmental rules and unfair competition from outside the bloc.

On Friday, farmers blocked border crossings between Netherlands and Belgium with a government website showing long delays on three major motorways.

Meanwhile, a Polish farmers union announced a plan to blockade the border crossings to Ukraine starting on Feb 9.

“The passivity of the Polish authorities... regarding the import of agricultural produce and food products from Ukraine leave us with no other choice but to declare a general strike,” the farmers union Solidarity said in a press release.

In Greece, farmers blocked roads in the north and centre of the country as they demanded a reduction to EU regulation and expidited compensation payouts for farmers affected by the flooding and wildfires that devastated parts of the country last summer.

In Romania where protests have happened daily for several weeks, (sorry Romania, we've neglected you but estern Europe is on the periphery of boggart blog's radar,) authorities have agreed to increase fuel subsidies after farmers there teamed up with hauliers to block streets and obstruct the movement of food and goods.

French farmers, meanwhile, dismantled some of the roadblocks they had built on motorways around Paris after wringing concessions out of the government on fuel duty, pesticides and other environmental issues.

“The worst of the crisis is now behind us, but the issues we have to deal with are ahead of us,” Marc Fesneau, the French agriculture minister, said on CNEWS TV.

Protests have also been organised in Portugal, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus in recent days.

Belgian police used Rubber bullets and water cannons against hundreds of farmers who had travelled from around western Europe to protest outside the EU Headquarters in the city on Thursday. The farmers threw eggs, set off fireworks, and set fire to staw bales and rubbish fires near the building while demanding that European leaders stop punishing them with more taxes, rising costs and the loonytoons 'green' policies imposed to push the continent towards the ruling bureaucrats impossible and irrational 'net zero' targets and advancement 'green agenda' which will see European fo production destroyed and all 27 members of the European Union wannabe superstate ot empire forced to depend on imports to feed their populations, heat homes and power industry and transport.

The protests were deliberately planned to coincide with an EU leaders summit meeting, with the farmers calling on politicians and bureaucrats to scrap agricultural and environmental regulations imposed by Brussels diktat which under EU rules takes precedence over the sovereignty of national governments.

According to reports from eye witnesses posted on social media along with photograps and video, farmers have broken through the barricades outside the European Parliament and also ignited smoke bombs.

 "We want to stop these crazy laws that come every single day from the European Commission," said Jose Maria Castilla, a Spanish farmer in Brussels  to represent the Spanish farmers' union, Asaja. The protests, which started in Netherlands over a year ago come as EU leaders met to discuss a $50 billion aid package for Ukraine.

 Belgian PM Alexander De Croo said that the farmers' concerns would be added to the summit's agenda, saying "It is important that we listen to them."

Protest Becomes Open Rebellion In Europe As Farmers Uprising Against 'Green' Policies Spreads To Other Industries.

As this blog has been reporting since the late summer of 2022, farmers across many european Union member states including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Romania, have been gradually esclating a campaign of protest against the globalist policies beimg imposed by the EU and implemented by far left governments. The campaign started in Netherlands when the recently ousted government threatened compulsory puchase of farms that did not reduce nitrogen emissions by culling livestock. The Dutch farmers protests mainly took the form of obstructing major transport networks with tractors. 

Over the past eighteen months this campaign has become a widespread populist movement and is sweeping Europe at a time when over-regulation, high taxes, nonsensical 'net zero targets and the climate change agenda threaten the livelihoods and living standards not just of farmers but of working-class people in a wide range of industries. An even bigger worry for the now - panicking elites is that the transformation of a campaign by disgruntled farmers into a widespread non - violent (so far) comes several months before the campaigning for election to the European Parliament gets under way in in June. 

Some countries hit hardest so far by protests have been Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and France. Protests have already spread to Poland and Belgium and are expected to reach Spain and Portugal within the next few days. 

On Tuesday (30 January,), France's new prime minister, Gabriel Attal, promised farmers emergency funds and stricter trade controls on foreign products to guarantee fair competition but the farmers' union said it was to little too late and encouraged their members to continue the fight which the protestors appear to be doing with considerable enthusiasm. 

"I'm so proud of you," Serge Bousquet-Cassagne, head of Lot-et-Garonne department's farmer's association, told protesters in the south of Paris, adding

"You are fighting this battle because if we don't fight we die." 

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin told local TV station France 2 that police were preparing to defend strategic areas of larger cities. 

"They can't attack police, they can't enter Rungis, they can't enter the Paris airports or the center of Paris," said Darmanin, adding, "But let me tell you again that if they try, we will be there."

One gets the feeling that the minister may prove to be disastrously wrong. Will French troops fire on French citizens if ordered to do so or will they mutiny. This is how close EU member states have come to civil conflict because of the ruling elite's disregard for the welfare of the people and obsessive commitment to loonytoons ideologies like net zerom critical race theory and transgenderism.

Farmers throughout the world have been protesting the increasing regulations on agriculture. The media is barely covering the story, and when they do mention it, they say that the farmers are protesting due to Russia blocking supplies from Ukraine. This is simply untrue. The farmers are protesting against over-regulation, taxes, and the climate change agenda that is making it increasingly difficult for them to make a successful living.

EU farmers' complaints are very basic:

• Out-of-control energy prices (thank whoever blew up the Nord Stream).

• Disastours carbon-cutting targets.

• Overall inflation.

• Bureaucracy from radicals in Brussels.

• Ukrainian grain imports. 

The demonstrations, which could soon consume Europe, come ahead of the June European Parliament elections.

 The farmers are protesting against over-regulation, taxes, and the climate change agenda that is making it increasingly difficult for them to make a successful living.

The demonstrations, which could soon consume Europe, started off with some humour, such as French farmers in Toulouse dumping dung on the town hall steps, but as steadily edging closer to violence with lorries and cars being overturned and burned and reports that police in some places have opened fire with rubber bullets on protestors.. 

As well as rge big issues listed abover, small farmers are upset that billionaire psychopaths linked to the WEF elites, such as Bill Gates whose agenda is to control everything he does not actually own, are aiming to reset the global food supply chain, a move that could render small-scale farming obsolete in favour of global 'Big Ag' corportations. If We The People are stupid and cowardly enough to allow that to happen, the recent increases in living costs will soon seem like insignificant small change.

Minister's Claim That 40% UK Energy Comes From Renewables Is Technically Illiterate
Britain's newly installed Secretary of State for Energy, Grant Shapps, is still learning the job so perhaps we should cut him some slack, but even so a statement he made on our energy supply today shows astounding ignorance of technical details relating to his portfolio.
Answering a question in Parliament this morning about Britain's ability to reach its target of getting 40% of our energy needs from sustainable sources, Shapps sneered that it was not possible for us to reach 40% now as we already get 43% from wind. Unfortunately the sneering sarcasm was misplaced but served to reveal the man in charge of energy policy does not know the difference between energy and electricity.
