As Uber Implodes Are Unicorns An Endangered Species?

Unicorns, they're fabulous, beautiful, mystical and infallible. And they have no substance to enable them to survive in the real world. I'm not talking about the Unicorns in fairy stories, like Tinkerbell they will exist in the real world as long as someone believes in them. No, I mean the high tech Unicorns that have emerged from Silicon (Silly con?) Valley in the past decade. It will take more than belief to preserve their existence.

A, according to Investopedia a unicorn, in the world of business, is a company, usually a start-up that does not have an established performance record, with a stock market valuation or estimated valuation of more than $1 billion. As if those drawbacks were not enough to deter smart investors, most of this new breed of Unicorns have been high tech companies which have no proven business model, product or service, distribution or agent network and no revenue stream.

The start ups are mostly involved in disruptive technologies, that is those technology developments that are hyped as having the potential to change the world for the better (like Twitter !!!).

Perhaps the most notorious of the new wave Unicorns to date is (was) Solyndra, a company that had a revolutionary idea for making very run of the mill solar panels and thus revolutionising the energy generation and supply industry. Trouble was the guys behind Solyndra knew how to spend other peoples' money but were not only clueless about how to make solar panels, but also about how to keep accounts, cost and plan projects hire competent employees or sell products. The last one did not matter because after spending upwards of $$$ half a billion, Solyndra went bust without having made a single solar panel.

Unicorns everywhere, particularly high - tech unicorns whose sole purpose is to disrupt, regardless of profitable business metrics, fundamentals, or even laws, obtain funding from venture capitalists (including the one run by the CIA), find an Investment Bank to manage the IPO (stock exchange launch), and then the founders cash in their chips. Twitter is fading, Facebook would be strggling but for the US Government being prepared to pay for the data FB steals, Snapchat stock soared because after the launch the hi - tech fanboys piled in, but is now plunging as harder headed investors shun the stock. But the company that has recently been help up and proclaimed the one leading the rush to a Brave New World is Uber. Unfortunately things are not as rosy for Uber as the publicists would have you believe.

Many commentators who should have known better held this company up as “the role model” for how to run, how to fight, and how to play by your own rules regardless if those rules may turn out to be in violation of known laws. i.e., “It’s all about disrupting and the Benjamins – screw everything else.” (i.e., AirBnB™ and it’s now legal issues as one example)

Not only are there issues relating to the hipster entrepreneurs belief that laws do not apply to 'cool people', these Unicorn start ups also have a reputation for being able to burn vast amounts of money without generating enough heat to boil a small kettle.

That approach to business development works as long as the central banks of major economies keep the bank rate near zero, effectively the investment banks are playing with “free money” (In fact it is not free, it is underwritten by us poor taxpayers). But when, as is happening now, the politicians realise that printing money causes far more problems than it solves, business fundamentals such as cash on hand, turnover, gross and net profits, P/E ratio*, corporate governance et cetera which were shunned by the geeks who founded Unicorns on the back of a mobile phone app or something equally flimsy, come back to haunt anyone who put money in.

2016 was supposed to be the “rebirth year” of the IPO. So was 2015 before it. And 2014, in fact every year since the crash of 2008 has been hailed as the dawn of the Brave New World, when machines that could think better than humans led us out of the wilderness, and creative accounting apps would change the way money worked so the more debt a person took on the richer they became. Hint: It didn't happen, once again the nerds failed to distinguish between wishful thinking and solid, achievable plans. High Frequency Trading algorithms that we were promised would give us infinite economic growth led to wild fluctuations in stock, commodity and currency values as a financial product could be bought, sold, bought, sold and sold again in a few minutes. This has made it effectively impossible to know what anything is really worth.

Uber, beset by scandals, wounded by an exodus of senior managers, burning money at an accelerating rate and facing greater legal issues than AirBnB and a loss of confidence on stock markets looks set to lead the next race to the bottom, as Newton's law of physics, the ones that explain why bubbles must burst, reassert themselves. If, or more realistically when Uber, with no market launch in sight, needs to go back to the funding rounds (and it is safe to speculate it will, with its self verified cash burn woes) and all the dirty laundry, sex scandals, management incompetence, dodgy accounting, blatant contempt of laws and regulations,and excess baggage is exposed in mainstream media to the entire investing world, the great cash burner will just run out of fuel and find nobody willing to take their credit cards.

It is widely known that the U.S.-led NATO intervention to topple Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 resulted in a power vacuum that has allowed terror groups like ISIS to gain a foothold in the country.
Despite the destructive consequences of the 2011 invasion, the West is currently taking a similar trajectory with regard to Syria. Just as the Obama administration excoriated Gaddafi in 2011, highlighting his human rights abuses and insisting he must be removed from power to protect the Libyan people, the Trump administration is now pointing to the repressive policies of Bashar al-Assad in Syria and warning his regime will soon come to an end — all in the name of protecting Syrian civilians.

But as the U.S. and its allies fail to produce legal grounds for their recent air strike — let alone provide concrete evidence to back up their claims Assad was responsible for a deadly chemical attack last week — more hazards of invading foreign countries and removing their heads of state are emerging.

This week, new findings revealed another unintended consequence of “humanitarian intervention”: the growth of the human slave trade.

The Guardian reports that while “violence, extortion and slave labor” have been a reality for people trafficked through Libya in the past, the slave trade has recently expanded. Today, people are selling other human beings out in the open.

“The latest reports of ‘slave markets’ for migrants can be added to a long list of outrages [in Libya],” said Mohammed Abdiker, head of operation and emergencies for the International Office of Migration, an intergovernmental organization that promotes “humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all,” according to its website. “The situation is dire. The more IOM engages inside Libya, the more we learn that it is a vale of tears for all too many migrants.”
The North African country is commonly used as a point of exit for refugees fleeing other parts of the continent. But since Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011, “the vast, sparsely populated country has slid into violent chaos and migrants with little cash and usually no papers are particularly vulnerable,” the Guardian explains.

One survivor from Senegal said he was passing through Libya from Niger with a group of other migrants attempting to flee their home countries. They had paid a smuggler to transport them via bus to the coast, where they would risk taking a boat to Europe. But rather than take them to the coast, the smuggler took them to a dusty lot in Sabha, Libya. According to Livia Manente, an IOM officer who interviews survivors, “their driver suddenly said middlemen had not passed on his fees and put his passengers up for sale.”

“Several other migrants confirmed his story, independently describing kinds of slave markets as well as kinds of private prisons all over in Libya,” she said, adding IOM Italy had confirmed similar stories from migrants landing in southern Italy.

The Senegalese survivor said he was taken to a makeshift prison, which the Guardian notes are common in Libya.

Those held inside are forced to work without pay, or on meager rations, and their captors regularly call family at home demanding a ransom. His captors asked for 300,000 west African francs (about £380), then sold him on to a larger jail where the demand doubled without explanation.

When migrants were held too long without having a ransom paid for them, they were taken away and killed. “Some wasted away on meager rations in unsanitary conditions, dying of hunger and disease, but overall numbers never fell,” the Guardian reported.

“If the number of migrants goes down, because of death or someone is ransomed, the kidnappers just go to the market and buy one,” Manente said.

Giuseppe Loprete, IOM Niger’s chief of mission, confirmed these disturbing reports. “It’s very clear they see themselves as being treated as slaves,” he said. He arranged for the repatriation of 1,500 migrants just in the first three months of this year and is concerned more stories and incidents will emerge as more migrants return from Libya.

“And conditions are worsening in Libya so I think we can also expect more in the coming months,” he added.

As the United States government continues to entertain regime change in Syria as a viable solution to the many crises in that country, it is becoming ever-more evident that ousting dictators — however detestable they may be — is not effective. Toppling Saddam Hussein led not only to the deaths of civilians and radicalization within the population, but also the rise of ISIS.

As Libya, once a beacon of stability in the region, continues to devolve in the fallout from the Western “humanitarian” intervention – and as human beings are dragged into emerging slave trades while rapes and kidnappings plague the population — it is increasingly obvious that further war will only create even further suffering in unforeseen ways.

Evidence That Latest Syria Chemical Weapons Outrage Was A False Flag Event

Postol has taught courses on weapons of mass destruction – including chemical and biological threats – at MIT. We don't normally place much value on the words of 'experts' who wave their educational credentials at us in order to give authority to their unquestioning repetition of government propaganda. When a professor goes against the official narrative however, it's usually worth giving some attention to. We bring you the words of Prof Postol; from his report on the lastest incident of illegal weapon use in the Syrian civil war.

This is my third report assessing the White House intelligence Report of April 11, 2017. My first report was titled A Quick Turnaround Assessment of the White House Intelligence Report Issued on April 11, 2017 about the Nerve Agent Attack in Khan Shaykhun, Syria and my second report was an Addendum to the first report.
This report provides unambiguous evidence that the White House Intelligence Report (WHR) of April 11, 2017 contains false and misleading claims that could not possibly have been accepted in any professional review by impartial intelligence experts. The WHR was produced by the National Security Council under the oversight of the National Security Advisor, Lieutenant General H. R. McMaster.

This image was extracted from a video of a worker during midday (note shadows) on April 5, 2017 next to the crater where sarin was allegedly released according to the White House Intelligence Report (WHR) issued of April 11, 2017.

The WHR asserts that it reviewed commercial video evidence and concluded that sarin came from the crater next to a man. Other video frames show unprotected workers in the crater showing no evidence of sarin poisoning at the same time the dead birds are being packaged. The URLs to this and a related video are contained in this report.

The evidence presented herein is from two selected videos which are part of a larger cache of videos that are available on YouTube. These videos were uploaded to YouTube in the time period between April 5, 2017 and April 7, 2017. Analysis of the videos shows that all of the scenes taken at the site where the WHR claims was the location of a sarin release indicate significant tampering with the site. Since these videos were available roughly one week before the White House report was issued on April 11, this indicates that the office of the WHR made no attempt to utilize the professional intelligence community to obtain accurate data in support of the findings in the report.

The video evidence shows workers at the site roughly 30 hours after the alleged attack that were wearing clothing with the logo “Idlib Health Directorate.” These individuals were photographed putting dead birds from a birdcage into plastic bags. The implication of these actions was that the birds had died after being placed in the alleged sarin crater. However, the video also shows the same workers inside and around the same crater with no protection of any kind against sarin poisoning.

These individuals were wearing honeycomb face masks and medical exam gloves. They were otherwise dressed in normal streetwear and had no protective clothing of any kind.

The honeycomb face masks would provide absolutely no protection against either sarin vapors or sarin aerosols. The masks are only designed to filter small particles from the air. If there were sarin vapor, it would be inhaled without attenuation by these individuals. If the sarin were in an aerosol form, the aerosol would have condensed into the pours in the masks, and would have evaporated into a highly lethal gas as the individuals inhaled through the mask. It is difficult to believe that such health workers, if they were health workers, would be so ignorant of these basic facts.

In addition, other people dressed as health workers were standing around the crater without any protection at all.

As noted in my earlier reports, the assumption in WHR that the site of the alleged sarin release had not been tampered with was totally unjustified and no competent intelligence analyst would have agreed that this assumption was valid. The implication of this observation is clear – the WHR was not reviewed and released by any competent intelligence experts unless they were motivated by factors other than concerns about the accuracy of the report.

While we are still arguing about the alleged chemical weapons attack by forces of the Assad regime against Syrian civilians (the more clued up voices maintain that was most likely a CIA engineered false flag event, as previous incident in Syria involving illegal chemical weapons turned out to be. What did Assad have to gain by pulling a stunt he knew would alienate world opinion? On the other hand Washington was rather too quick to put blame on Assad without any evidence to support the accusation, but that was the approach used for years by the Obama administration in all its regime change stunts. The US Government has been looking for a way to justify the direct intervention Washington has craved since 2013.

Reports coming out of Syria past couple of days (and remember there are now no western reporters in Syria, we only get information from partisan sources) suggest hundreds of people, both combatants and civilians (including women and children)have died following an airstrike by the US-led coalition which allegedly hit a poison gas storage depot belonging to Al Nusra and the Free Syrian Army terrorists (aka Barack Obama's beloved 'moderate rebels'.

The Syrian Army released a statement on Thursday, announcing that the airstrike had taken place in the village of Hatla, near Dayr al-Zawr in eastern Syria, at around 5:30 p.m. local time (1530 GMT) the previous day.

The statement, released through Syria’s official news agency, SANA, reported clouds of thick white smoke covering the area immediately after the strike the strike. After a few minutes the vapour turned yellow. The assault also caused a fierce blaze, which continued until late in the evening on Wednesday, sources in Syria said.

According to the statement, hundreds of people, including a large number of non - military local villagers, were killed after inhaling toxic fumes.

The statement went on to claim the strike is evidence of the close coordination between terrorist groups operating inside Syria and their US and Saudi Arabian sponsors and also proved the militants were in possession of the means to wage chemical warfare.

The Syrian Army statement went on to say that terror outfits, particularly ISIS and al-Nusra Front, were able to acquire and transport chemical weapons through the assistance of certain regional powers, emphasizing that the Damascus government had repeatedly warned that terrorist groups would use chemical weapons against civilians and Syrian army forces.

German government Approves Bill Targeting Hate Speech, Fake News on Social Media

Germany's Cabinet on Wednesday approved a new bill that punishes social networking sites if they fail to swiftly remove illegal content such as hate speech or defamatory fake news.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's Cabinet agreed on rules that would impose fines of up to 50 million euros (53.4 million dollars) on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms.

German Justice Minister Heiko Maas said that the companies offering such online platforms are responsible for removing hateful content. He said the new bill would not restrict the freedom of expression, but intervene only when criminal hatred or intentionally false news are posted.

Germany poses a particular problem for U.S.-owned social networking sites accustomed to American standards of free speech. Due to its Nazi past, Germany bans public Holocaust denial and any overt promotion of racism. The issue has come to the fore amid the recent influx of migrants to Germany, which has sparked a backlash among some Germans including a rise in online vitriol.

Social networks need to ensure that obviously criminal content — as defined by German law — will be deleted within 24 hours and other illegal content after seven days.

"Just like on the streets, there is also no room for criminal incitement on social networks," Maas said.

"The internet affects the culture of debate and the atmosphere in our society. Verbal radicalization is often a preliminary stage to physical violence," he added.

The minister pointed out that social networks don't delete enough punishable content, citing research that he said showed Twitter deletes just 1 percent of illegal content flagged by users, while Facebook deletes 39 percent.

Maas also said that measures to combat hate speech and so-called fake news will ultimately have to be taken at the European level to be effective.

The bill still needs parliamentary approval.

As Middle East Analysts Focus On Syria's Alliance With Russia, They Forget Assad's Other Friend

Since the Syrian civil war began analysts commented only on Syria’s alliances with the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Both are important allies in President Assad’s struggle against Islamic extremist rebels, but they are not his only powerful friends. Interviewed by Chinese media last month, Assad called China, “a real friend, a friend that you can rely on.”

Indeed there is a long standing relationship between Syria and China. The alliance was established in 1956 and when in 1963, the centrist government of Syria was overthrown in a coup d’état led by military officers loyal to the Syrian Ba’ath Party (an Islamic socialist movement that has ruled continuously . Similar The Ba’ath movement was also the intellectual basis of Saddam Hussein’s government in Iraq. Saddam however was a nationalist, Syria’s version of Ba'athism envisions a pan-Arab, socialist style of governance.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, China has been eager to expand its influence in other socialist states. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the pillar that had propped up the regime of Assad's dad, Hafiz al Assad, was gone and Damascus had to look towards Beijing, the last major communist regime standing, for support. China was keen to have a frienly nation with a Mediterranean coastline and a deal to build Syria a small 30MW nuclear research reactor and supply intermediate range ballistic missiles was concluded. Following the 2004 visit of Bashar al-Assad to Beijing, economic relations picked up, with China investing hundreds of millions of dollars into the Syrian oil industry. Bilateral trade jumped from US$174 million in 2000 to US$2.27 billion by 2010, making China Syria’s third most important trade partner.

This has created a lot of goodwill towards Beijing among Syria’s political establishment but the far eastern state former still lags behind Russia and Iran in the estimation of the al-Assad family.

Since the start of the civil war China has approached the conflict in its usual cautious manner. On one hand China's foreign policy has traditionally been directed towards maintaining its role as the major regional power in south east Asia and The Pacific, but Beijing would be reluctant to see its middle eastern ally fall and be replaced by a Sunni Muslim puppet government of Islamic fundamentalists. Since a similar US - Saudi - Arabia backed regime change war in Libya and subsequent collapse of that country, formerly Africa's righest and most socially advanced nation, into a chaotic failed state robbed China of one of its most important oil suppliers Beijing has taken a much harder line against Western interventionism, which it sees as jeopardizing its own economic interests. (One example of this was China using its Security Council veto power to block UN resolutions sanctioning Syria for using chemical weapons against its citizens.) Added to that, Assad remaining in power strengthens the position in the region of Iran, another Chinese ally, which China is coming to perceive as a counterweight to American domination in the Persian Gulf.

Although Beijing has not yet seriously committed military support to Syria beyond a small force of weapons technicians nobody should doubt how far it will go to keep the al-Assad regime in power. So far Iran has taken care of ISIS on the ground, with air support from Russia, and Putin has faced down the threats made by the USA.

Chinese support so far has been largely symbolic, but while Assad is perceibed to be winning that's fine. In the event of an al-Assad victory, Russia and Iran will likely come to dominate the foreign policy of whatever is left of the regime in Damascus. However it will likely be China that rebuilds the nation, and its ports, from the ground up, buying itself a far more stable and strategic foothold in Syrian affairs in the process.

On the other hand, if it looks as if Assad will fall, or if there are any more false flag events engineered by the Americans to justify direct NATO intervention in Syria's civil war, expect China to be lining up with Russia and Iran in support of Assad.

The Rise Of Populism: an Explainer

It was obvious to anyone who has done even a little reading in the field of political philosophy that Barack Obama was a Marxist, not an economic Marxist but a political or cultural Marxist, whose thinking like that of The Frankfurt School and Saul Alinsky was based more on Marx's other book, The Communist Manifesto than on his impractical but good-looking-on-paper economic theories in Das Kapital. In fact, with its focus on the subjugation of the individual to the all powerful central state authority it can be argued that all Marx did was take the social structure of Zionism and replace God with The State.

If that is correct it would go some way to explaining the weird, oppressive laws enacted (by executive order, the democratic equivalent of rule by Imperial Decree,) in the United States during the final months of the Obama administration, not just by the outgoing president, Emperor and Pontifex Maximus Barack Hussein Obama, but by state legislatures in those states traditionally dominated by the Democratic party. As one would expect in California, the world capital of 'progressive' craziness a plethora of new and oppressive laws come into effect as Governor Moonbeam extends the reach of government into the lives of the states people and even animals, and a bizarre new law took effect in Illinois which required hairdressers to obtain training in domestic abuse prevention.

Hairdressers as domestic abuse coulsellors? WTF?. The basis of the idea is the state would take advantage of the confidential relationship between a woman and her hairdresser to spot the symptoms of control frwakery or even violent abuse and guide the victim toward the embracing arms of agencies of government where she will be made dependent for life by a far more subtle form of abuse that is designed to convince its victims they cannot survive without support.

While not yet fully implemented this daft idea is now part of the qualification process for anyone seeking to become a hairdresser in Illinois and whichever other US states adopt the policy (the usual suspects being California, New York, Massachusetts, Colorado, Washington, Oregon and the north east we guess.)

What level of training hover the great and good of Illinois decided is appropriate to enable people to fulfil this complex and sensitive role, you might well ask. Anyone who wants to keep their job as a hairdresser will be required to undergo one hour of training every two years. His / her / zur ability to wield comb, scissors, hairdryer etc. being unchanged, the loss potential earnings should he / she / ze be stipped of the license to weild such weapons of mass beautification in order to provide a service as part of a commercial transaction clearly not seen as an injustice in the bizarro would of Cultural Marxism.

While Cultural Marxist are fond of babbling about the utopian dreams of Marx and followers who believe a perfect world would ensue if only people would stop being indiviuals, stop living for themselves and learn to 'live for each other' to use an often quoted and rarely understood phrase. In order to be able to help others we must first help ourselves. A rarely quoted comment on Cultural Marxism that I believe should be shouted from the rooftops is the warning the Russian anarchist Mikhail Bakunin gave Marx in 1870(ish) when he predicted that a Socialist or Communist government would quickly become more oppressive that the old absolute monarchies of Europe. Bakunin has been proved right in every nation where communism has been tried and even in democratic nations, elected governments of socialist parties have quickly developed authoritarian tendencies.

The rise of populism, symbolised by the victory of Donald Trump in the US election and the result of the UK's referendum on whether we should remain in the increasingly authoritarian vand federalist European Union isn’t the politics of rejecting the policies of politicians and experts, it is in fact a total rejection of the kind of “experts” who, having spent all their lives in schools and universities filling their head with theory and book - learning, feel themselves qualified to pontificate on a subject of which they have an almost total lack of understanding; life.

Such experts deserve more than voters' contempt disdain. Educational qualifications and endorsement from state agencies are now seen by a growing proportion of the global population as measures of incompetence and a bureaucratic obsession with process and procedure and pedantic devotion to pointless rules and regulations. Qualifications it seems, nothing at all to do with intellectual capacity apart from objectivity. It isn’t the denial of reasoned argument but rather the logical end of it.

Thus we have come to a state where on one side we have the people who are not part of 'The State' and are intelligent (in many different ways), creative and self reliant, and the ones who have embedded themselves in the suffocating grip of bureaucracy and have lost the power to think critically and reason objectively and have become dependent on process and procedure, rules and regulations.
