An almost complete news blackout from Brazil has been in operation since early October after evidence of serious election fraud by supporters of Pressident elect Luiz Ignation Lula da Silva had swayed the vote in favoutr of the communist candidate and former jailbird. The defeated former president Jair Bolsonaro publicly denounced the result and called for an audit of votes which under Brazilian constitutional law he is entitled to do.

This has been worsening as efforts by Lula's putative government became more and more outrageous in denying Bolsonaro's party access to election data (which is a strange ting to do if the election was conducted honestly as they claim.

There were unconfirmed reports last week that the Brazilian military had moved against Lula and invoked a clause in the constitution which allows them to remove a president found to have behaved dishonestly.

The Communists trying to steal an election and take over the county of Brazil are now threatening to arrest former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro for serving meals to protestors.

Russia Responds To UK's "Very Dangerous" Coup Allegations

Russia has blasted this weekend's allegations by the UK government that it's planning to install a pro-Kremlin puppet leader in Ukraine. "We have information that indicates the Russian Government is looking to install a pro-Russian leader in Kyiv as it considers whether to invade and occupy Ukraine," the UK statement published Saturday began. 

The Kremlin responded by urging London's Foreign Office to stop pushing "nonsense" and "disinformation" while further highlighting that the UK has merely been on the sidelines as diplomatic dialogue and a way forward is being sought by Moscow, Brussels, and Washington.

"We strongly urge London to stop foolish rhetorical provocations, which are very dangerous in the current overheated situation, and contribute to the real diplomatic efforts to ensure reliable guarantees for European security," the statement issued by the Russian Embassy in the UK said.

"The latest news, concerning Russia’s plans to bring to power in Kiev former Verkhovnaya Rada deputy [Yevgeny Muraev], who remains under Moscow’s sanctions as a person posing a threat to national security, is completely anecdotal," the embassy said further. "Having found itself on the sidelines of real diplomatic processes, London views its role in the constant incitement of anti-Russian sentiment."

"The logic is simple - every day accuse Russia of plotting ‘inevitable’ invasion of Ukraine and try to play the role of an ideological leader, defending itself from ‘autocrats’ and aiming to ‘free the world’," the statement concluded.

Turkish forces surround NATO’s Incirlik air base amid rumors of coup attempt

Browsing through stories that came in over the news feeds overnight and this morning (OK, we Boggart Bloggers are not early starters) we noticed that thinks are kicking off again in Turkey. Reports claimed an estimated seven thousand Turkish troops surround NATO’s Incirlik air base for ‘inspection’. As there is no reason for the Turkish military to inspect the site, this news has sparked rumours of another attempted coup against the regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

No details are available as yet and the reports should be viewed with some scepticism. In the light of recent events in Turkey however, they cannot be dismissed.

All roads to Inkrilic closed

The failed, or very possibly staged Turkish coup of two weekends ago is now commonly acknowledged to have been nothing more than an excuse for Erdogan to centralise more power on the office of president and suppress all political and independent opposition. A less widely reported news story from Turkey is the sudden, and acute deterioration in US-Turkish relations. Two days ago, completely unreported in European and US media, the Commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM) General Joseph Votel was forced to release a statement denying having anything to do with the attempted coup in Turkey following pointed allegations from the very top that "the US orchestrated last Friday's coup". according to a statement released by the US military on Friday.

As U.S. Military magazine Stars and Stripes reported last week, the recent failed coup and jailing of senior military officers, civil servants, academics and journalists in Turkey could impact U.S. operations there against the Islamic State group, Gen. Joseph Votel said Thursday at a security conference in Colorado. Votel said the coup attempt in Turkey two weeks ago left him “concerned” about how U.S. operations and personnel at Incirlik Air Base will be affected.


"Turkey of course …sits on an extraordinarily important seam between the central region and Europe,” Votel said at the Aspen Security Forum. “It will have an impact on the operations we do along that very important seam. Obviously, we are very dependent on Turkey for basing of our resources…I am concerned it will impact the level of cooperation and collaboration that we have with Turkey.”

Hurriyet, a daily paper known for its loyal support of Erdogan (there are no longer any newspapers in Turkey that are not loyal supporters of Erdogan, he closed them all), even reported retired Army Gen. John F. Campbell, former commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, was the mastermind behind the attempted overthrow. However, the paper also reported White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest called the allegations against the general unsubstantiated.

As a result of the previous coup attempt (if that is what it was), U.S. air operations were temporarily suspended and the Turkish government cut power to Incirlik.


Meanwhile, Turkey's propaganda war against the US escalated on Friday, when Turkey's authoritarian head of state Erdogan condemned the West for declining to show solidarity with a NATO 'ally' and being more concerned about the fate of coup supporters than the survival of Turkey are not friends of Ankara. Conveniently forgetting that for over two years while the west was fighting Islamic State, Turkey was carrying on an illegal oil trade with the terrorist organisation and acting as a conduit through which arms and ammunition flowed to the Islamic extremist group.

Erdogan hypocritically blasted the West for criticizing the massive purge of Turkey’s military and other state institutions which has resulted in over 60,000 people being detained, removed or suspended over suspected links with the coup and for cancelling 50,000 civilian passports which many worry is but a prelude to an expansion of the reign of terror inside the country.

"The attitude of many countries and their officials over the coup attempt in Turkey is shameful in the name of democracy," Erdogan told hundreds of supporters at the presidential palace in Ankara.

Today's news, if it is indeed another coup, and the news that NATO's critical Incirlik Air Base near Adana has been completely blocked off by Turkey, with all inputs and outputs having been closed according to Turkey's Hurriyet among rumors of yet another coup, is even more disturbing for NATO.

The action has raised concern that the closing may be tied to an attempt by the Erdogan regime to prevent a second coup attempt. Hurriyet reported earlier that Adana police had been tipped off about a new coup attempt, and forces were immediately alerted. The entrance to the base was closed off. Security forces armed with rifles and armored TOMA vehicles used by Turkish riot police could be seen at the site in photos taken by witnesses.

Apparently declaring a state of emergency a state of emergency following the failed coup earlier this month was not enough to help President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to fulfill all his political ambitions. The failed coup which was crused in a matter of hours by government troops, but has since been denounced by supporters of Tukey's secular democracy as a tactical hoax has given the Islamist Erdogan the opportunity to grant himself unlimited powers.

In the two weeks since the coup, Erdogan's government has embarked on an unprecedented purge of political opponents, which has led to over 13,000 arrests, mostly of soldiers, judges, prosecutors, teachers, university chiefs, hospital workers, and most recently journalists. On top of that 60,000 government employees have been sacked. Also in the aftermath of the staged failed coup, the president has ordered the closure and seizure of 1,043 private schools, 1,229 charities and foundations, 19 trade unions, 15 universities and 35 hospitals. The latest target are those who question the official script.

As AP reports, Turkish prosecutors are now investigating people who have alleged on social media and elsewhere that a July 15 coup attempt was a hoax carried out by the government, the country’s justice minister said on Sunday, heralding the suspension of free speech.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said in an interview with Turkey’s Kanal 7 television station Sunday that anyone who suggests the coup attempt was staged likely had a role in the insurrection, which was defeated by loyalist forces and pro-government protesters. There has been some internet speculation that Erdogan engineered the unrest in order to rally support prior to a massive and planned power grab which in effect usurps all the powers of the elected assembly to the president. The government and most commentators on Turkey’s recent turbulence dismiss this as a conspiracy theory, but then Erdogan's true opponents have been gradually neutralised ever since he gained the presidency.

“Just look at the people who are saying on social media that this was theater, public prosecutors are already investigating them. Most of them are losers who think it is an honor to die for Fethullah Gulen’s command,” Bozdag said.

In other crackdown measures, Turkey has disbanded the presidential guard after already detaining nearly 300 unit members suspected of plotting against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and authorities detained Muhammet Sait Gulen, a nephew of the cleric who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania.

Turkey has declared a state of emergency to restore security following the coup attempt, granting Erdogan the power to impose decrees without parliamentary approval. More than 13,000 people, including nearly 9,000 soldiers, 2,100 judges and prosecutors and 1,485 police, have been detained, according to the president. The crackdown on free speech and organised opposition have ended Turkey's ambitions of joining the European Union. This will be a blow to German Chancellor angela Merkel and European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker, who have been the main champions of Turkey's accession to full membership.

U.S. Troops at Turkish Air Base on Highest Force Protection Level

Following the failed coup in Turkey on Friday night, the US embassy in Turkey says the Incirlik air base has been placed in lockdown. The base is used by the US-led coalition, including Germany, to launch airstrikes against "Islamic State."
 
A message on the website of the US consulate in Adana reported on Saturday that "local authorities were denying movements [onto] and off of Incirlik air base." According to Deutsche Welt the State Department advised US citizens to avoid the facility until normal operations could be restored.

The sealing-off of the facility, which houses up to 80 nuclear bombs, follows a a failed coup attempt by a faction within Turkey's military.

It is not yet clear whether aircraft from the base were hijacked by coup plotters during the night of chaos. According to Turkish government officials, US jets were used to attack key buildings, including the parliament building in Ankara.
A US Defense Department official told Agence France-Presse that military operations against Islamic State had been suspended due to the lockdown and a closure of Turkish airspace to military aircraft.

The base is used mostly by the US, Turkish, UK and Saudi air forces. Germany also has around 400 ground troops stationed at the facility.

Earlier this month, German MPs were prevented from visiting the base as Turkey's President Erdogan tried to exert pressure on Angela Merkel to speed up the Islamic nation's accession to the EU, a move which has strained relations between Berlin and Ankara.

Also on Saturday, the US State Department warned American citizens against taking part in pro-Erdogan demonstrations in the city of Adana, amid fears of violence. Adana is just 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Incirlik air base.

Coup In Turkey? Helicopters, Military Jets Reported Flying Over Capital; Army, Tanks Deployed

Fortunately I was out most of the day and so was catching up on posting the gang's submissions and suggestions. I'm not usually online this late on a Friday.

Reports are coming in on the news wires of an attempted coup in Turkey. It must be stressed none of this is confirmed but the sources, Reuters and Agence France Presse (AFP) are more reliable than most and they are reporting the sounds of shooting and explosions in the Turkish capital, Ankara, with military jets and helicopters having been sighted overflying the city. According to Reuters, gunfire could be heard in the streets while bridges heading into Istanbul have been currently shut down.

According to local media reports, citing a pro-government newspaper, this is an attempted coup.

This news story will obviously be unfolding overnight, we will report more tomorrow because it is the time when in civilised counties, bottles of wine are opened.

Just as a smug little sign off though, we reported the liklihood of a coup in Turkey back in March, when President Erdogan transferred legislative power from the democraticallyish elected government to himself.

Having Destroyed Ukraine Economy, USA Accuses Russia Of Trying To Destroy The Ukrainian Economy

In what is probably his most idiotic statement ever, US Vice President Joe Biden has accused the Russian government of trying to collapse Ukraine economically, saying Kiev is “now under siege.”


“Russia is trying to undermine the stability and sovereignty of Ukraine by any means it can, including attempting to create conditions that would cause Ukraine to economically collapse,” Biden said at a forum for American and Ukrainian business leaders at the US Chamber of Commerce on Monday.

“As a matter of fact, that’s its first preference,” he added. “But we can’t to let that strategy succeed.”

Poor Joe, must be back on the booze again, surely he can't have forgotten the coup in Ukraine that overthrew an unpopular and corrupt but democratically elected government was backed by the US government and engineered by the CIA. White House official Victoria Nuland admitted as much in a famous open mic incident.

The vice president is never content with putting one foot in his mouth however, he likes to get them both in there and so he went on to claim Moscow is sending troops and weapons to destabilize Ukraine, as if the government of trigger happy neo - Nazi loonies installed in Kiev after the US led coup had not already destabilised it enough.

“Russia is building military outposts on Ukrainian soil, it relentlessly continues to send Russian troops, Russian hired thugs and mercenaries, Russian tanks, and Russian missiles into numerous parts of Ukraine,” he stated. Well we have no way of knowing if that is true or not. But we think of other US claims, that Russian convoys were shipping arms into Ukraine, that Russian troops shot down Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over Ukraine and that Putin is about to invade the Baltic States, none of which Washington has been able to offer a shred of evidence in support of, and compare that with the very visible destruction wreaked on pro - Russian areas of Ukraine by the US backed Kiev government and make up your own mind up who the aggressors are.

The United States accuses Russia of sending troops into eastern Ukraine in support of the pro-Russian forces, an allegation denied by the Kremlin.
