Putin, Macron To Hold Urgent Talks To Halt Military Escalation In Ukraine

 

While President Biden and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson continue to talk up the idea that Russia is committed to an invasion of Ukraine that could happen "within the next few days, (even though that next few days has stretched from late January all the way through February without any have evidence that Russia had any plans to invade,) French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed in a phone call on Saturday, to take urgent measures to deescalate the situation in eastern Ukraine, the Elysee Palace announced in a statement on Sunday. 

 The two leaders  also discussed Putin's plan to withdraw Russian troops from Belarus now that President Likashenko is formly back in charge after a bid by 'unknown non - state actors' (i.e. the usual suspects',) failed bid to forment a colour revolution to overthrow the regime..

 Putin and Macron agreed to work within the 'Normandy format' - which will also include German and Ukrainian leadership - and will begin discussions "in the next few hours" in order to negotiate terms for a ceasefire in the Donbas region. (Picture: Zero Hedge)

As a result of the telephone discussion a meeting between French and Russian ministers of foreign affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian and Sergey Lavrov, will occur in the next few days. A statement issued by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs set out the scope for these negotiations.

"This diplomatic work should make it possible to progress on the basis of the latest exchanges by involving all the stakeholders (Europeans, allies, Russians and Ukrainians) in order to achieve, if the conditions are met, a meeting at the highest level in to define a new order of peace and security in Europe."

The Kremlin confirmed the statement, saying "it was agreed to continue contacts at various levels. Serious concern has been expressed over the sharp deterioration of the situation on the line of contact in Donbass. The President of Russia noted that the escalation has been caused by the provocations of the Ukrainian security forces," the Kremlin statement reads in translation.

According to RT, the Russian online news service that has strong links with The Kremlin, Putin brought up "the ongoing pumping of Ukraine with modern weapons and ammunition" by NATO countries, which is pushing Kiev "toward a military solution to the so-called Donbass problem." Because of the "intensifying shelling," citizens in self-proclaimed breakaway republics in eastern Ukraine had to evacuate Russia.

The Ukranian government in Kiev continues to accused America and Britain of hysteerical rhetoric as they continue to claim Russia plans an imminent invasion, but offer no evidence to back uo these claims other than pictures showing large numbers of Russian troops stationed withing 50 miles of the Ukraine border, which is exactly where they have been since 2014 when the Obama regime in washington backed by David Cameron's coalition UK goverrnment, draged us through a very similar exercise in warmongering. 

Separately from the Putin / Macron initiative,Russia and Belarus will extend their joint military exercises, according to Bloomberg report based on information from sources in the Belariusian Defense Ministry.

The training exercises were scheduled to finish on Sunday and Russia had said it would return its troops to their bases afterward. While those drills are in Belarus, which is north of Ukraine, the defense ministry statement cited the deteriorating situation in eastern Ukraine for the extension,, a likely reference to NATO’s recent deployment of more troops eastward. -Bloomberg

In the past week, since the shelling of an infants' school which may have been accidental or a false flag event according to various reports, fighting between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian  government forces in the breakaway Donbas region has escalated - with allegations of violations on both sides of a 2015 ceasefire, The Minsk agreement. 

According to Ukraine, the separatist leaders are increasing the rate of attacks, including on civilian targets, to force a response and create a pretext for a Russian invasion. Donbas leaders say they're responding to Ukraine firing on them.

Is Donbass Preparing To Break Away from Troubled Ukraine

Trump, Syria, Brexit and the immigration crisis have dominated news since last summer but the problems of Ukraine have not gone away. In fact, although the shooting war between the Kiev government and the ethnic Russian rebels in the Donbass and Lugansk regions has reduced to occsional skirmishes, the political landscape Ukraine looks more unstable than ever. 

 Last week, following the imposition of a total blockade against the region now being called Novorussia by the puppet government installed in Kiev by the USA and NATO after a coup d'etat engineered by the CIA and the Obama administration.   This revives the name the ethnic Russian dominated parts of Ukraine was known by under The Russian Empire prior to the 1917 communist revolution.

 Russia declared that she will from now on recognize the official documents emitted by the DNR and LNR authorities, which make up novorussia. This week, the Novorussian authorities have nationalized all the key factories of the Donbass. Furthermore, the Novorussians have now declared that since the Ukrainian authorities are not willing to purchase the region's coal and anthracite exports will go to Russia. And just to make sure that they cover all their bases, the Novorussians have also declared that from now on only the Russian Rouble will be circulating in the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics.

The authoritarian Kiev government's Prime Minister responded by declaring that he thinks that the irregular forces currently enforcing the blockade should be considered official border guards (as for these soon to be “border guards”, they have explained that for their main border post shall be called “nightingale” in honor of the Nachtigall battalion of the Nazi Abwehr). Yes, the guys in Kiev are big fans of the Nazis.

All in all the recent political moves in Ukraine give a casual observer the impression the DNR and LNR are cutting off their last ties to the Ukraine and the the junta in Kiev appears to be going along with this plan.
 
In reality, this is all much more complicated. There is a covert battle for supremacy going on between the Ukrainian oligarchs Rinat Akhmetov, Igor Kolomoiskii and President Poroshensko and there is also a not so covert war taking place between right wing extremists in Kiev and Poroshenko. 

This situation begs the question of what the Russian banks will be able and willing to do to help the Novorussians  as Russia does not need Novorussia's coal, they have plenty of their own. There could be some kind of deal under which Russia would sell on the break away region's coal in world markets, and with 'sustainable energy' technologies having fallen so far short of expectations, the market for coal could sooon be booming. There are many conflicting interests competing against each other now, but the big picture seems to be spelling out “good-bye Ukraine”.

  The enormous importance if these developments in geopolitical terms can be gagued by the determination of western corporate media to pretend nothing significant is happening in Ukraine. British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Boris Johnson, who was in Kiev yesterday, was focusing exclusively on the upcoming Eurovision competition, and not on the dramatic developments taking place in the southeast.
 
In the Ukrainian context, the expression “never say never” is probably even more important than usual, but if the Donbass is now cutting its ties with the Ukraine and integrating with Russia politically and economically, and that the junta in Kiev appears to have been unable to prevent the Nazi sympathisers in the government from triggering this crisis with their blockade, then this potentially means the Kiev government has given up any hope of regaining control of Donbass. And that is terrible news for the NATO World Domination Society.

New US Ambassador to UN sings the anti-Russia song while Kiev murders Donbass civilians.

The new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has expressed "strong condemnation of Russia's actions" in eastern Ukraine and warned that Ukraine-related sanctions against Russia will not be lifted until Crimea is returned to Kiev.

"Crimea is a part of Ukraine. Our Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns control of the peninsula to Ukraine," she said on February 2 in her first public remarks before the Security Council since being sworn into office.

"Eastern Ukraine, of course, is not the only part of the country suffering because of Russia's aggressive actions. The United States continues to condemn and call for an immediate end to the Russian occupation of Crimea," Haley said.

The new American envoy said it was "unfortunate" that she had to condemn Russia in her first appearance before the council.

"We do want to better our relations with Russia," she said, but "the dire situation in eastern Ukraine is one that demands clear and strong condemnation of Russian actions."

In fact OSCE monitors have reported ceasefire violations have been committed by forces of the Kiev government, not the pro - Russian separatists in Donbass.

 Vitaly Churkin, echoing comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier in the day, told the UN council late on February 2 that Kyiv needs money which it "can swindle out of the European Union, certain European countries, and from the United States and from international financial institutions by pretending to be the victims of aggression."

"The essence of those events is quite clear: Kiev is trying to use the armed clashes that it provoked as a pretext for a complete rejection of the February 12, 2015, Minsk agreements, sealed by the UN Security Council resolution 2202," Churkin said in Russian, TASS reports.

He called for a cease-fire and return to implementation of the Minsk peace agreement.

Ukraine Ready To Explode? Russia Deploys S-400 Missile System To Crimea.

Reuters reports that amid escalation tensions in Ukraine and a resurgence of hostilities in the Donbass region where ethic Russians are opposing Kiev's ethnic cleansing efforts, Russia has deployed its advanced S-400 air missile system to Crimea, the area annexed by Russia following the replacement of Kiev's democratically elected government in a coup known to have been engineered by the CIA on behalf of Washington.

 In the latest escalation between the Kremlin and Kiev, it was reported yesterday that Ukraine had deployed troops near the Russia border on combat alert, following an incident that according to Russia was an attempted terrorist attack. 

Russia’s secret service, the Federal Security Service, said on Wednesday that it had foiled “terrorist acts” prepared by Ukrainian military agents against infrastructure in the territory, with the aim of disrupting Russia’s parliamentary elections due on 18 September. Kiev denied the allegations. In response to Kiev's alleged actions, Russian president Vladimir Putin said he was pulling out of international peace talks on the conflict in eastern Ukraine. He said he was no longer ready to meet his Ukrainian counterpart, Petro Poroshenko.
This probably means the Minsk peace process, brokered by German chancellor Angela Merkel and France's President Francois Hollande, has been effectively put on hold ( read more here). 

 Ukraine has denied all accusations, while president Petro Poroshenko and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Putin's accusations that Kiev is committing terrorist acts in Crimea. "Accusations against Ukraine of terrorism in occupied Crimea are as preposterous and cynical as the statements by the Russian leadership about the absence of Russian troops in Donbass region," Poroshenko said.

President Poroshenko escalated the rhetoric when he announced yesterday morning that he has put all forces forces on the border with Crimea and eastern Ukraine at the highest combat readiness,  and said "we expect Russia to respond in kind very shortly, at which point we will update this story."
Overnight, Russia responded not once but twice.

First, after meeting the security council in Moscow, Putin and the Russian Navy announced war games in the Black Sea. This came only a day after the Russian president accused Ukraine of trying to provoke a conflict over Crimea, which Moscow seized and annexed in 2014.  The Russian Defence Ministry said its navy - whose Black Sea Fleet is based in Crimea - would start to hold exercises in the area to practice repelling underwater attacks by saboteurs. As Reuters adds, there were reports on Thursday evening that the authorities had cut off Internet access in northern Crimea close to Ukraine.

Ukraine called the accusations false and claimed they are a pretext for Russia to escalate hostilities. Such an escalation could be used by Putin to demand better terms in the Ukraine peace process, or to inflame nationalist passions at home ahead of Russian parliamentary elections next month.

Then, as part of its retaliatory re-escalation, Russia announced it had deployed its advanced S-400 (Growler) air defense missile system to Crimea, Russian news agencies reported today.

The announcement comes after President Putin promised to take counter-measures following reports of clashes between Russian forces and Ukrainian saboteurs in northern Crimea.

Though Ukraine may protest loudly against what it will call an unprovoked aggression by Russia, the real targets of Putin's move is NATO, which as was reported in late May, installed the long delayed US missile shield called Aegis Offshore in the Romanian town of Deveslu. Located a few hundred kilometers from Crimea, and hence, in defensive range of the new Russian rockets, this was seen as part of the USA / NATO to surround Russia with missile bases. Aegis Offshore has also been installed in the Baltic States which prompted Putin to warn that Poland and Romania "are now in the crosshairs."

Situation in East Ukraine Remains Unstable

As we have said before, the ongoing conflicts around the world do not go away just because we do not report them for a while. There is still fighting in Syria, in yemen, Libya, and of course in Ukraine. We are a small site and cannot pick up on all the stories that show up on our news feeds and sometimes it is the case that while low level fighting goes on bigger evens push coverage aside.

One of the ongoing stories over the past two years has been the situation in eastern Ukraine. The area remains volatile as the forces Kiev of the Kiev government have intensified the shelling of settlements in self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics, according to Russian envoy to Contact Group on Ukraine Boris Gryzlov on Wednesday.

The Trilateral Contact Group, consisting of envoys and experts from Ukraine, Russia, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), is holding a regular meeting in Minsk aimed at facilitating a diplomatic resolution to the armed conflict in Donbas.

"It is obvious that the situation in the conflict zone remains difficult. The intensified shelling of settlements, primarily by Kiev-led forces, causes grave concern," Gryzlov told reporters.

The Russian envoy stressed that security issues must not hamper the settlement of political aspects of peace process in eastern Ukraine.

"Otherwise, the settlement process will be largely influenced by those who do not wish peace for Donbas," Gryzlov said.

The event that pushed Ukraine back to prominence in news reports was that journalists from two news agencies came under mortar fire from Ukrainian forces near the eastern Ukrainian town of Debaltsevo, on Wednesday.

"A group of journalists went to cover a news story about soldiers living in the seventh detachment of the LPR [Luhansk People's Republic] People's Militia. Later, as they moved toward the LPR positions on the contact line, at that moment they came under mortar fire and unsighted sniper fire," LPR's People's Militia headquarters said, confirming that that journalists were not injured. Southeastern Ukraine has been the focus of conflict between Kiev and ethnic Russian separatist groups since military operations against local independence supporters were launched by the Kiev authorities in April 2014.

In February this year, the warring parties signed a deal brokered by German chancellor Angela Merkel and France's President Hollande on Ukrainian reconciliation in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. However, numerous ceasefire breaches have been reported in Donbas since the Minsk peace deal was signed.

Germany Hopes To Ease Anti-Russia Sanctions 'to Rescue EU Unity'

Having done more over the past decade to destroy European Unity (which was always something of a fairy tale anyway), Angela Merkel now wants to rescue it.

Hausfrau Volksfuhrer Merkel is not leading a bid by German politicians to devise a plan to lift the anti-Russian economic sanctions the USA's Obama administration bullied the EU into supporting. Berlin plans to abolish a range of trade restrictions imposed at Obama's insistence after Russia annexed Crimea following ethnic cleansing of Russian speakers in the area by the US backed regime in Kiev. Germany hopes that in exchange for removing sanctions Moscow's assistance in the organization of the local elections in Eastern Ukraine will be secured, according to Der Spiegel.

In August 2014, the EU and the US imposed economic sanctions on Russia, accusing Moscow of fueling civil conflict between pro Russian rebels and the neo - Nazi regime put in place after a CIA backed coup deposed the democratically elected government. Russian authorities have repeatedly denied the allegations and in response introduced a food embargo that negatively affected the economies of a number of European countries. In other words, while Obama's sanctions have not affected the USA which has very little trade with Russia, and has been a minor inconvenience to Russia because they can get what they need from non EU countries, a lot of smaller EU nations with fragile economies have suffered damaging effects.

(Sarcasm alert) This if a typical Obama administration foreign policy triumph.

Until now, Germany's position on the removal of imposed restrictions has been not until the Minsk agreements are fully implemented, the article said. Now, however, Berlin is willing to make concessions and ease sanctions if the countries are able to reach at least some progress in the Minsk process. antagonising Russia has hurt Germany, already beset with massive domestic problems, too.

"I have always held the position that the sanctions are not a goal in itself. The easing of sanctions can be discussed if visible progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements is achieved," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is quoted as saying.

According to the magazine, Berlin is likely to unilaterally lift some sanctions in exchange for Moscow's assistance in the organization of local elections in Eastern Ukraine. However, the move will probably include the removal of a travel ban rather than restrictions which are of actual importance for Russia, such as financial sanctions or sanctions imposed with regard to Crimea.

"In this way, Germany seeks to maintain EU unity and to reconcile the supporters and opponents of the sanctions," the magazine wrote. A few weeks ago we reported that the resistance within EU, mostly among the Visigard group natioons, against the continuation of sanctions is growing. It is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve a common position on this issue, he said. According to the magazine, the most important goal for the German government is to keep unity within the EU so that the Russian President does not get the impression that he can split European countries.

European Leaders Welcome Period Of Calm In Ukraine

The civil conflict in Ukraine has been pushed aside due to the seriousness of events in Syria and Iraq, but that's the way it goes with international news. Ukraine's problems are still as serious as ever even if they have not been at the op of news bulletins or grabbing newspaper headlines for a while. It would be great to report that the Kiev Government and pro - Russia separatists in the Donbass region had reached and agreement and the country was getting back to normal but that is not so.

European leaders however, eager as only politicians can be to aggrandize themselves, were quick to hail progress in halting the bloodshed in eastern Ukraine after talks in Berlin last Friday. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who hosted the meeting top foreign affairs officers from Ukraine, Russia and France, told reporters the two hours of discussions had focused on "how to further shore up the ceasefire" agreed in September between Kiev and pro-Russian forces.

"No one denied the difficulties and the obstacles to a political solution," he said.

"My impression here was that the participants are working to overcome these obstacles."

Steinmeier said the big sticking point was withdrawal of heavy weapons, including tanks, artillery and mortars, a goal he said he hoped will be reached by early December.

The chief monitor for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Ertugrul Apakan, said this week the ceasefire was "largely holding" but that the situation remains "volatile". A broader peace deal brokered by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and France's President Francois Hollande in February, The Minsk Accord, calls for the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the front line and calls for a vote in independence to be held in the separatist regions under international auspices.

The referendum have now been pushed back to early 2016.

For Russia, Sergei Lavrov admitted that "the implementation of Minsk will be delayed until next year" but told Russian reporters that he "truly hopes that a (military) escalation can be halted".

We note that the politicians do not acknowledge that fears the worsening situation in syria and Turkey and the EU's migrat crisis might spill over into Ukraine might have exercised a restraining influence on the parties involved in the conflict.

U.S. Ships Tanks to Ukraine: European Leaders Are Furious

This news may be a couple of weeks old, collating and trying to verify anything we hear from Ukraine at the moment is almost impossible

Although Barack Obama says he has not yet reached a decision on whether to send weapons to Ukraine, reports now emerging in reliable sourses suggest the USA is alreadry arming its puppets in Kiev for an escalation of the war against ethnic Russian separatists in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine. We have reported previously that Washington seemed determined to trash the Minsk ceasefire brokered by France's Francois Holland and Angela Merkel of Germany.

The Obama administration was in fact bust trashing the agreement and trying to derail the peace deal before the ink was dry on the leaders signatures, immediately violating the spirit of the deal approved by Putin, and Poroshenko, and signed by the OSCE, Russia, Ukraine, and both of the rebel Ukrainian republics, the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic.

Our information suggests Obama now appears to be sending heavy weapons to Ukraine, and thus assisting Ukraine to resume attacking the DPR & LPR.

Even conservative Europeans are expressing outrage. Italy’s leading conservative newspaper, Il Giornalo, and even the leader of Austria’s anti-immigrant “Freedom Party,” are shocked and appalled by this Obama action.

Heinz-Christian Strache, leader of Austria’s Freedom Party, posted a photo (below) of what he claims are Abrams tanks now on rail-cars in Linz Austria en-route to Ukraine; he estimated 50 of them.

Il Giornale posted this article, which carries the same picture . Translated, the headline reads:

There were also photos that show the first American tanks traveling to Ukraine.

In his blog Strache refers to these as Abrams tanks entering Austria [from Germany] through Linz, en route to Ukraine. (An American military officer who is a friend of this website tells us they look like Bradley fighting vehicles which are not actually tanks and are less powerfully armed than an Abrams Tank) If this interpretation is true, then America is already breaking the agreements signed by Ukraine and Russia in Minsk.

On 9 April, 2015 the Maundi Thursday in the Russian Orthodox religious calendar, the day before Good Friday, the extremist, U.S-coup-installed Ukrainian Government launched attacks on all fronts against the separatist Donbass region, with the intention of restarting their genocide campaign against the ethnic Russian residents of the area that refuses to accept the coup-government that was installed by the US - NATO - EU alliance. We warned you this move was imminent three weks ago.

When the Ukrainian President whom 90% of those residents had voted for was overthrown by the neo Nazis hired to stage the CIA engineered coup, the people of East Ukraine who if not ethnic Russian were pro Moscow, the alternative being EU membership and the same fate as Greece, Spain and Italy. This blatant violation by the Poroshenko-Yatsenyuk regime of the Merkel-Hollande brokered Minsk agreement could not have taken place without approval at the highest level from the Obama administration in Washington.

In choosing such an outrageously provocative action on the weekend of a Russian holy festival can only be seen as a challenge to Russia, which having a more politically sophidsticated leader than the former rent boy Barack Hussein Obama has been confining its hostilities to financial warfare. Russia and China have been leading a bid to undermine the status of the US dollar as the world's reserve currency.

Lacking the intelligence to counter the Russian - Chinse moves which have enjoyed widespread support from third world countries bullied by the US hegemon and also from traditional US allies such as Britain, Australia and Japan, Obama's only remaining option if US superpower status is to be maintained is to now to provoke Russia to sending in of Russian combat troops and air power, which would give Washington hawks who pull Obama's strings a pretext to go to war “in order to defend an ally” (which has been trying to wipe out residents in the area that won’t accept being governed by Obama’s fascist puppets).

All out war has been Obama's goal throughout all his interventions from Libya (where Obama's 'humanitarian' bombing campaign supported by Britain and France has in three years turned Africa's most prosperous nation into a civil conflict torn failed state in which criminal gangs, religious fantatics and tribal war lords fight each other for control of towns and villages.

Same story in Syria, where obdurate diplomatic resistance from Russia, China and Iran prevented western intervention, saving Syria from being taken over by barbaric, US armed and trained Islamic extremists but instead pluncged that country into a civil war.

Add to the warmonger Obama's score sheet, civil war in Yemen, tripartate war in Iraq between ISIS extremists, the Iraqui government and Shiite militias backed by Iran and we see a pattern of US warmongering.
