Vox slams ‘traitor’ Pedro Sánchez as more than 1,500 migrants swim to Ceuta from Morocco

The biggest news story of the year so far has filled online, print and broadcast news this week as an estimated 49,000 illegal migrants entered the tiny Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco within 24 hours. The figure, attributed to estimates used by Spain’s Department of Defense Security and confirmed by two ministerial sources, would amount to roughly 59 percent of Ceuta’s population of approximately 83,000. The influx began with migrants swimming around the coastal border fence, enticed by a Spanish Supreme Court ruling earlier this month that prevented immediate pushbacks of people entering Spanish territory by sea. As the flow intensified, footage showed thousands gathering at the frontier before overwhelming the border infrastructure and entering the autonomous city. The Spanish government later announced the deployment of the armed forces to support the Civil Guard, despite initially refusing to rule out the declaration of a national emergency.

Spanish troops were eventually deployed to the streets of Ceuta after thousands of Moroccan migrants stormed the exclave on Thursday.

The Spanish territory, which borders Morocco in North Africa, was inundated with arrivals who overwhelmed police.

At least nine people have died trying to reach the exclave, Spanish authorities said.

Footage showed migrants swimming towards a crowded shore, while thousands more stormed through border gates, completely overwhelming the few border guards on duty.

While the land border is protected by a 10m-high security fence and is heavily policed by Spain and Morocco, arrivals by sea are protected by a new court ruling.

Spain’s supreme court decreed earlier this month that migrants intercepted at sea while attempting to reach Spanish territory could not be returned to Morocco. That ruling follows a Spanish Supreme Court ruling granting amnesty and residency rights to between 500,000 and 1 million illegal immigrants already in Spain. 

Recent foggy conditions and warm sea temperatures probably led to the surge in arrivals. According to state broadcaster TVE, 2,000 to 3,000 people had crossed the border on Thursday.

However, the government said the ruling was not a factor in the sharp increase in crossings, instead blaming “exploitation by mafias and criminal organisations”.

“It has been a slow trickle since the supreme court’s ruling [granting amnesty to a million illegal immigrants already in Spain,], but today has been an explosion,” a spokesman for the Guardia Civil told Reuters.

In Melilla, although the situation was more muted, clashes and fires were reported at Beni Ansar, the exclave’s only border crossing with Morocco.

When Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s prime minister, declared shortly afterwards that “practically all” of them had returned to Morocco, relief quickly gave way to mockery – even though almost nobody had bothered to verify Madrid’s claims.

But away from the border crossing, a different reality is unfolding.

Up to 5,000 migrants remained scattered across the beaches, industrial estates and streets of Ceuta, officials estimated on Monday. Two migrant reception centres – one for adults and another for minors – had “collapsed”, the local mayor said.

But the official narrative from Madrid is that everything is under control, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s outrage, and her suggestion that Schengen free movement with Spain might have to be temporarily suspended is wildly overblown,  and merely a political ploy apparently. So too was the criticism coming from other European capitals.

German leftist weekly Die Zeit denounced what it called “fact-free Spain-bashing” and went further still: “The new arrivals were returned quickly and without bureaucracy, so precisely what conservative and Right-wing parties always demand has happened.”

It would be comforting if that were true. It is not.

The reality is far messier – and it brutally exposes the EU’s impotence on migration.

 Some reports from North Africa suggest these mobs of young male economic migrants are an Islamic 'forlorn hope', an expeditionary force sent to test European defences, as are the "small boats" currently ferrying many thousands of young Muslim men into Britain. A similar invasion is ongoing in Italy where for over a decade now swarms of illegal immigrants have descended like locusts on the tiny Italian ruled ] tiny Italian island of Lampedusa, where between June 1, 2023 and mid-January 2025, the reception center, or hotspot on the in the Mediterranean has welcomed a total of 126,000 migrants, states the Red Cross in figures released at the end of last week.

"The year 2024 that just ended brought a total of 45,997 migrants to Lampedusa on 1,095 different boats. Most of the arrivals were adult men (74.3 percent), followed by minors (19.4 percent) and women (6.3 percent)"

Madrid insists that “almost everyone” who entered the North African enclave during last week’s unprecedented influx has already been returned to Morocco.

The real invasion is yet to come, but come it will. History, it i said, repeats itself and the Islamic attack on Europe has happened several times before in the last 1500 years. Islamic invaders from North Africa ruled the whole of Spain until around 1480; as late as 1680, they very, very nearly occupied Vienna. If they had not lost that battle, European history would have been very different. Now they are back, and they mean business. Islam does not come to integrate but to subjugate. Muslims "know" that they have a divine duty to convert the world to the Islamic faith. One has to have a grudging admiration for their clear conviction. Would that our woke Christian and political leaders had such clarity of purpose. Mass immigration has replaced military action this time, but the aim of these migrants is to undermine European civil society and the rule of law. We citizens and our leaders must wake from our complacent sleep before it is too late.  

Europe, under the EU, has been weak on borders by removing most of them and not protecting the few that are left. They've also been importing migrants en masse, often to the dislike of their own citizens, for decades. Those who arrive / are found / arrested are treated like victims and given what they need at the cost of tax-paying citizens, who don't necessarily support government action / inaction on migration and the recent EU Migration  Pact, dubbed Europe's suicide pact, came into force there has been a huge backlash against open borders policy. The message this sends to the world is that anyone can just rock up and stay and be paid for. Until governments change the message, this problem will never stop, it will only collapse the 'safe' countries the millions are flocking to.

UK Dumps Climate Madhouse Project To Harvest Sun And Wind Energy In The Sahara

 

 

It comes as little surprise that yet another grandiose techno-utopian vision has ended not with a triumphant march toward Net Zero, but with a flick of the off-switch. Last week, Britain’s energy secretary quietly announced that the government “has pulled the plug on a £24 billion plan to bring Moroccan wind and solar power to Britain via the world’s longest subsea electricity cable, citing concerns over security and costs” . In other words, after years of hype, headline-grabbing simulations and talk of “reliable clean power for 19 hours a day,” the reality of risk and expense finally intruded—and the dream of Sahara sun for all has been consigned to the scrapheap.

The scheme, championed by Xlinks and backed by big-name investors from Abu Dhabi’s Taqa to TotalEnergies, was unveiled in 2022 with a headline price tag of £16 billion. By the time official talks fizzled, project costs had ballooned to between £22 billion and £24 billion—and the fixed, subsidised price for UK consumers had climbed from a promising £48/MWh in 2012 terms to a sobering £70-80/MWh, on par with Hinkley Point C’s notorious £92.50/MWh deal from a decade ago . It was a textbook illustration of how techno-optimism meets political reality: grand ambitions crashing headlong into the twin walls of finance and geopolitics.

Perhaps the most telling line came when officials admitted this “first-of-a-kind mega project” carried “a high level of inherent, cumulative risk, delivery, operational, and security.” In plainer terms, nobody quite trusted a 3,800-mile subsea cable stretching from the Sahara to Devon to keep the lights on—or to fend off hostile actors, accidental damage or simple technical failure . For all the talk of homegrown power, the reality was a foreign-built supergrid running through disputed waters, vulnerable to every storm, saboteur or bureaucratic blunder.

And yet just a few years ago, this venture was presented as the ultimate win-win: millions of desert acres covered in solar panels and wind turbines, exporting 3.6 GW of “reliable” energy to 7 million homes and displacing imported gas.

The initial delivery method proposed in this projects for energy collected in Morocco to be delivered to homes and businesses in UK was by undersea cable but this was found to be unfeasible in avery imaginable way, cost, technical difficuty, security, politics etc. and an alteenative proposal to transport the cuurent via the national grids of France and Spain put forward.

How many of you spotted that yes,  this is the same Spain where only a few weeks ago the entire 70% solar/wind supplied grid  shut down due to power overload which because a surge of current flowing into the grid as both wind and solar generators experiences perfect conditions simultaneously while insufficient grid inertia destsbilised frequency? Spain's high capacity undersea Moroccan Inreconnector could do nothing to save the situation.

(Note: the problem isn’t lack of supply, it’s lack of inertia only available from spinning generation. Since this means the majority of supply must be spinning generation, the alleged aim of wind/solar – battling the evil devil Siotu – cannot be achieved and its expense not warranted.)

And spread that frequency failure to part of southern France via an interconnector causing power cuts there, to the evident delight of the French. Are interconnectors une bonne idée? L’ on y pense.

Long distance interconnectors are usually DC and can provide no inertia. The French/Spain one is short distance AC which is why Spain was able to export its frequency chaos.

Without mostly spinning generation, grids are inherently unstable and at constant risk of failure from frequency instability which can be caused by a variety of factors.This is why for all the hysterical claims of the UK's green lobby that on a breezy, sunny day, renewables are generating up to 70% of our electricity is such a joke. In order to provide the necessary inertia to smooth out sudded fluctuations in current that are a feature of ;gren' technologies, we have to keep gas power stations running twenty four hours a  day and pay the operators to let the otput go down to earth.

Spain exports to France and France exports to England – but this is not dispatchsble. It is heavily dependent on whether Spain and France have spare capacity available on demand. It overlooks the other energy self-harming Country Germany which relies heavily on France and Norway when dunkelflautes are about… often in Winter. Norway is threatening to restrict supplies via interconnector as extra-territorial demand is forcing prices up to – unhappy – Norwegian consumers. France meanwhile is faced with replacing its fleet of aged 59 nuclear reactors, of which recently 26 were out if action for repair/maintenance a few months ago and France had no spare juice, struggling to,meet its own requirements.

Oh – and then there’s energy loss. The further electricity travels the less comes out the other end. So by the time it arrives in England, consumersd might get might get enoough juice on \ winter's morning to boil a small kettle for a cup of tea. So long was they don't switch on the low wattage light at the same time.

But back to the sheer wrong - headedness of the Sahara project. 

Consider that you can’t build stable turbines or panels on shifting sands and that the sands of the Sahara Run an average depth of 500′ then consider the deepest “Moving Dunes” can be 1000′ deep, you will need some gargantuan turbine masts and deeply excavated turbine footings (down to bedrock) to place turbines “Just anywhere” in the Sahara. Same for Solar Panels, their bases would also need to be set deep to “Not be Disturbed” by Saharan shifting sands. 

As as some readers will know the Sahara is not all sand dunes,it would be equally difficult to put wind turbines or solar farms on Gravel plains or salt flats either. The gravel would still need to be excavated to a stable surface and the salt would prove corrosive to panel supports. So that leaves the rocky Mesa areas and I’m not sure how much of a problem the stone might pose as foundation footing installations.

And on top of all that, the first desert sand storm would knock out every solar panel caught in its pash. Sand blasted panels become opaque and thus the light is diffused before it hits the photo - voltaic cells. 

There is an kind of joy to be obtained from witnessing this particular techno-dream deflate. It reminds us that even the most elaborate green schemes are only as sound as their financial footings and, adherednce ti the laws of physics and geopolitical practicalities. When those are not taken into account, the utopian narrative gives way to something far more earthy: the simple recognition that expensive, complex, and foreign-dependent projects rarely survive contact with reality.

Britain To Harvest Power From Sahara Solar Farms Using 700ft Ship? Another Green Dream

 

World’s biggest cable-laying vessel will link Moroccan renewables with Devon substationread a headline in a UK mainsteam news website recently. A project to feed power from the Sahara Desert to Britain moved a step closer to fruition as its financial backers prepare to commission the giant cable-laying ship.

 

A purpose built 700ft long cable laying vessel will, according to the plan, lay four parallel cables linking solar and wind farms spread across the desert in Morocco with a substation in Alverdiscott, a tiny village near the coast of north Devon. A cable 1400 miles (2,200 Km) long under some very wild parts of the Atlantic ocean? What could go wrong?

On paper it sounds a great idea but the practical side isn't quite a simple.

We live in a world that is becoming more unstable by the day with wars in Ukraine, and the Middle East, the Red Sea becoming a no go zone for European and American shipping, and food and energy security threatened on all sides. 

The question that probably has not been asked because it should have been asked first is who will have political control of this part of the Sahara in say 10 years time when this project is completed? Morocco is a reasonably stable country by African standards but if tensions between the Islamic world and the west continue to increase who knows how Morroccans will feel about selling their sunshine to a hostle power. Have the people seeking to make a quick buck out of the cable considered that the political control and turmoil engulfing the Suez canal now was a problem mooted when it was built. The Suez crisis was only 70 years ago, but thanks to television and the internet people have short memories.

Even so it is not unreasonable to expect the people promoting this idea to have heard of the disruption caused to trade (particularly oil and gas shipments, by the current problems in the Red Sea region. 

Would the money be better off invested on modular nuclear reactors?

Reports revealed that Xlinks, the company behind the project, expects the ship to cost several hundred million pounds (ah, so it isn't built yet?) and be capable of carrying 200 miles of power cables, coiled and ready for deployment on the seafloor.

If the scheme ever progresses beyond the planning stage the cable link is expected to deliver about 3.6 gigawatts of electricity to the UK’s national grid – equating to about 8pc of total power demand.

James Humfrey, new chief executive of subsidiary Xlinks First, said the vessel would lay two 100-mile lengths of cable at a time, then head back to the UK for the next two lengths.

On returning it would pick up the cable ends, connect them to the next lengths and repeat the process. Commissioning of the ship is expected later this year.

Mr Humfrey said: “This will offer a near constant, clean and affordable supply of electricity to the UK and play a key role in Morocco and the UK’s future prosperity.” The Xlinks scheme involves laying cables carrying high voltage direct current power along the coasts of Spain, Portugal and France, coming ashore in North Africa.There, they will connect with seven solar farms and up to 1,000 wind turbines built across an area of Moroccan desert roughly the size of greater London.

Just over two years ago at the time of writing, many European nations and EU member states were keeping energy costs down and their economies competitive by importing cheap gas and oil from Russia. When war broke out in Ukraine economic sanctions on Russia cut off that source of fuel for  industry and commerce, thus the economies of countries that had become dependent on cheap Russian imports were hit harder by the sanctions than the intended target, with Germany being transformed from an industrial powerhouse to the 'sick man of europe' as its economy slipped into recession.

Are we prepared to again tie our economic stability and prosperity to a source that can be immediately cut by hostile nations (as shown by a certain gas pipeline recently)?? Britain and other west European nations need to build a resilient low cost energy system while commissioning the construction of Small Nulcear Reactors quickly and removing NIMBY and ecoloon impediments.  

There is nothing technically unworkable about laying international undersea cables, defenders of this scheme and followers of The Church of Scienceology Cult will be quick to point out there are SEVERAL different cables like this across the channel and North Sea already - carrying 25% of UK electricity supply from cheaper Norwegian hydroelectric, Danish, Dutch Irish or Belgium wind or French Nuclear that we have to import due to the shortfally caused by underperforming 'sustainables'..  

The difference is Denmark, Norway and The Netherlands are friendly nations. Morocco? A date palm republic. I don't think they grow bananas there. Electricity may be cheap to produce in Norway, Denmark etc. but those producers make us long suffering consumers in the UK pay premium rates for it. Do you really think Moroccan solar farm operators will be giving their energy away once they know we are dependent on it to keep the lights on and the wheels turning.

The biggest political flaw in the scheme is that we would extend dependency on external sources, and sources that are not as politically reliable as those across the Channel or The North Sea. Protecting cables in the well patrolled English Channel and North Sea is a somewhat different proposition to protecting much longer cables under 1300 miles the open seas of the Atlantic.It has been noted that Russian vessels have been monitoring the location of all these cables, plus the connections from offshore wind farms recently? It's unlikely that this action was merely idle curiosity.

There are new reports saying Yemen's Houthis have knocked out several underwater telecommunications cables linking Europe and Asia, however accounts of the extent of damage remain conflicting.

Multiple Israeli publications are reporting Monday that four underwater communications cables between Saudi Arabia and Djibouti have been damaged in recent months - the result of Houthi sabotage. The reporting appears to have originated in Israel's financial daily outlet Globes.
