How Net Zero Will Bankrupt Nations And Their People

As other nations, including Germany which was always one of the front runners in the race to Net Zero, pull back from their unrealistic decrbonisation targets, it seems only the UK's fanatically 'woke' Labour government is fully committed to destroying the national economy in pursuit of this idiotic Green fantasy. There is hope however, as more crackpot schemes to move us nearer to Net Zero fail, a backlash from the public and business is gaining momentum.

 from GWPF, 8 January 2025

The UK faces a £200 billion bill to rewire the country if the government follows through on plans to electrify the country’s homes and transport systems. That’s because installation of electric car chargers and heat pumps will push up demand for power beyond the capacity of the existing wiring.

The findings are set out in a new report from the Global Warming Policy Foundation, which is published today. According to author Mike Travers, this will mean that most streets in the UK will need to be dug up (with diesel-driven machinery):

“At present new home car chargers and heat pumps are using up all the spare capacity. But we will soon reach the point where the network will not be able to handle the extra demand. So in towns and cities, the underground cables which carry the power will be inadequate. That means that we are going to have to dig up almost every urban street and many rural ones too. The whole distribution grid is going to need to be replaced.”

And the cables that carry power into the homes will need to be dug up too. The cost will be enormous.

According to Travers:

“The power cables taking electricity into your home probably run underneath your front drive. So if you want a car charger and a heat pump you are going to have to pay to dig it up. If you have an expensive monoblocked drive, that will not be cheap. Distribution boards, main fuses and smart meters in homes are going to have to be upgraded too.”

Travers has estimated the cost of all this work at around £200 billion, even before considering the cost caused by the disruption. “Many homeowners will be paying thousands”, he says.

Notes for journalists

Mike Travers CEng, MIMechE, FIET is an electrical engineer, whose career spanned periods in the Royal Engineers, in the hydroelectric sector, and industry. He previously sat on the the IET Wiring Regulations Committee and was the industry representative on the committee that rewrote the Grid Codes for Scotland.

His paper is entitled The Hidden Cost of Net Zero: Rewiring the UK and can be downloaded here (pdf)

Other independent studies have suggested that for the UK, were Net Zero even achievable the cost would be in £trillions rather than billions.

Can Bus Sized Lithium Ion Batteries Power Britain

Mentioned in the Domesday Book, the pretty, peaceful English village of Granborough, Berkshire, has been around for over a thousand years without ever making the headlines on national news although it was mentioned in one of the James Bond films.

All that could be about to change however, the village has been identified as the potential site for not one, but two giant battery installations, "each capable of storing 10.6 Gw," according to the pre - publicity, and a solar farm.Energy companies Statera and Statkraft have applied for planning permission to build two 500-megawatt sites near a new electricity substation, arguing that the plan is needed to facilitate the transition to a decarbonised electricity grid.

The project has, predictably, provoked local opposition. “This might become an industrial area more than the farming land it’s been for the last thousand years,” says Jamie Ingham Clark, of the Claydons Solar Action Group, “Battery storage sites should be on brownfield – they should not take away our ability to grow food.”

Campaigners say they are particularly concerned about fire risk from the batteries, after a major fire at a facility in Liverpool four years ago.

However, they are fighting a David and Goliath style battle.

Across the UK, giant battery installations are being proposed as investors seek to capitalise on Labour’s plan to decarbonise the grid with a wind and solar boom.

Unfortunately for the green loons and the windmills and sunshine harvesters fan club these ‘battery farms’ are not a suitable solution for balancing the intermittency of renewables and most will be used to regulate the power supplied to the grid instead. Thus adding to the cost of renewables and doing nothing to power us on still cold nights.

Observant readers will have noted that it is dark for more than 12 hours each day in the UK winter. The scientists who have promoted solar power as one of the mainstays of our zero carbon electricity system seem blissfully unaware of this although most human being have been aware of the absence of sunlight during the hours of darkness since men first stood erect.

Likewise a report on wind power commissioned by conservation group the John Muir Trust (read full document here - .pdf ) reported that the technology was failing to deliver, with wind turbines only opersting at 21% efficiency over the coure of a full year. Wind industry sources queried this, claiming the true figure was 27%. Whichever is right it explaines why, on a daily basis, we have to fill around 20% of our energy needs by importing power via underwater interconnectors from France, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Norway. And with France's nuclear power stations being by far the biggest contributor it explains why successive UK governments have not been willing to stem the flow of illegal immigrants across the Channel by intercepting the boats and lorries and sending the undocumented arrivals back.

The main conclusions of the report are that wind power is not producing the promised average levels of power and "cannot be relied upon" when electricity is most needed.

To power the UK just for 24 hours in winter would require tens of thousands of Tesla’s largest batteries. And they would be no use. Firstly because the wind/solar downtime could be several days. But even if it’s only the odd day, or night, they’d still be no use because, once discharged, there would not be enough ‘excess’ sun and wind to recharge them in time for the next still night.

The whole thing is a con. It cannot work.

Lithium Ion Electric Car batteries have proven problematic; they spontaneousky combust more easily than Spinal Tap drummers and once alight are exceptionally difficult to put out. If one of these mega stations does get damaged and catches fire will it effectively take out a whole site and surrounding buildings? Is this a low rise Grenfell on our doorstep? I don't know but I would like to see proper evidence of safety.

How long would it be before they have to be demolished and replaced? How do you recycle them? How clean is the process to make them initially and their replacements. We are aware that solar panels are life of 25 years and they don't recycle well.

We know the batteries are not clean when manufactured and use rare earth materials not produced in a clean way. We know the wind turbines blades have limited life and cannot be recycled. This is not clean energy or very recyclable and without huge subsidies hidden or not would not be commercially viable. Smoke and mirrors and a pack of lies!

The usual poor journalism standards we have come to expect in stories related to science and technology multiply exponentially when applied to grid scale battery storage: the number of GW (always quoted) is irrelevant,  the amount of stored energy in GWh they can release is what counts. 10.6GW of battery storage may minutes or hours of useful energy to power homes and businesses so if demand is a steady 2Gw per hour the supply will hold up for five hours.

Quoting GW is meaningless. We need to know how many GWh (gigawatt hours) of power they could provide. So if you could provide 50GW (i.e. peak demand) but only 5GWh, you can only cover that peak demand for 6 minutes and then the lights go out. Lithium ion battery storage is NOT the answer to stabilising a distribution grid supplied by intermittent sources like wind and solar.

The number of batteries required to supply the UK's electricity needs for a week would run to tens of thousands. And you do not even want to think about what happens when one of said batteries goes into thermal runaway when you have a field full of the things.

We do not have a suitable technology for storing sufficient power to render intermittent renewables a reliable source of energy. And lithium batteries are certainly not it.

British Coal Fired Power Station Brought Online As Solar Panels Fail In Hot, Sunny Weather

When you see headlines like the one above (which is not a joke BTW,) you'll understand why Boggart Bloggers abandoned satire. It's simply impossible to satirise a clown show.

Ratcliffe-on-Soar
Uniper’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal power plant in Nottinghamshire started producing electricity for the first time in weeks on Monday morning Credit: David Davies/PA

Most comical news of the day today is that on a sunny day with a breeze blowing, Britain's National Grid has brought online a power station which relies on burning coal to generate electricity for the first time in a month and a half. This, we're told has happened because the fairly modest heatwave've had this month, during which temperatures reached 30 degrees C and  made solar panels too hot to work efficiently.

One coal fired unit at Uniper’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal power plant in Nottinghamshire started feeding electricity into the grid for the first time in weeks on Monday morning, while another coal-powered plant was warmed up in case it was needed by the early afternoon.

The National Grid was forced to turn to coal for generating electricity as a rush to turn on air conditioning and fans across the country during the heatwave led to a spike in demand.

High temperatures over the weekend also reduced the amount of energy generated by solar panels. Output on Sunday was almost a third lower than a week earlier, despite temperatures climbing above 30 degrees celsius across large parts of the country.

If the ‘heatwave’ makes our solar panels too hot to work properly, how do actual warm regions like Australia, California, Spain etc etc that have lots of solar arrays cope – why would ours be different? Smells like bollocks to us Boggart Bloggers and certainly exposes the folly of crackpot schemes to carpet large parts of the Sahara desert with solar panels and pipe the electricity to northern Europe.

A few minutes research on solar panels proves can get to o hot to work efficiently and that’s from themanufacturers website (but its fairly common knowledge among the engineering community.
Anywhere over 35° C and they can lose 25% or more efficiency according to the makers but tests show they can regularly reach 65° C in heatwaves because of their very construction, glass! Stand in a green house and you’ll get the idea!

So with solar panels overheating when the weather gets warmish by British standards, and the failings of wind becoming more obvious every time we have a windless day, everything looking wonderful for electricity generation in a 'Net Zero' world.

Climate Scaremongers Have Taken Over Where COVID Scaremongers Left Off
Boggart Blog can announce that the winners of our coveted Scaremongering Bollocks of The Month award goes this month to BBC News. Not only did the BBC report in one of their regular climate catastrophe scare stories that river levels across the UK have been at record lows, they broadcast that news story on the same day as The London Weather Centre announced that March 2023 was set to be the wettest March since records began.

Just When We Need It Most, Renewable Energy Disappears
In an encouraging sign of a great awakening, million of people in the UK are now, after a week of brutally cold, absolutely windless weather asking "Why have we wasted so much money on wind turbines and harvesting solar energy."
Yet when politicians are asked directly: "How do we keep the lights on and our homes warm when the wind does not blow and the sun is too low in the sky to make much impression on photovoltaic cells that do the business in solar panels?

Europe's Cold Spell Exposes Green Energy Policy Failure
So far the autumn of 2022 has been unusually mild which has had eco-warriors getting worked up and gluing their arses to motorways and airport runways to demand that we stop using oil. However winter temperatures across Europe predictably dropped sharply in late November and through most of December to date have been positively arctic. Scientists have offered the opinion that the cold weather spell the ongoing European gas crisis is now “likely” to worsen significantly as usual seasonal weather spreads across the northern half of the continent, bringing with it an increased need for domestic heating.

Minister's Claim That 40% UK Energy Comes From Renewables Is Technically Illiterate
Britain's newly installed Secretary of State for Energy, Grant Shapps, is still learning the job so perhaps we should cut him some slack, but even so a statement he made on our energy supply today shows astounding ignorance of technical details relating to his portfolio.
Answering a question in Parliament this morning about Britain's ability to reach its target of getting 40% of our energy needs from sustainable sources, Shapps sneered that it was not possible for us to reach 40% now as we already get 43% from wind. Unfortunately the sneering sarcasm was misplaced but served to reveal the man in charge of energy policy does not know the difference between energy and electricity.

We have learned vial a piece in OilPrice.com that turbines at a wind farm in western Germany are being dismantled to allow for the expansion of open cast coal mining operations at an adjacent site. The propsal to increase output at the Garzweiler open-pit lignite coal mine has been described as a “paradoxical” situation given that in recent years the German government has been pushing ahead with the closure of coal and nuclear generating plant to appease its nutty but powerful Green party ... German NatGas Consumption Too High To Avoid Energy "Emergency", Regulator Warns As Norway Increases Gas Production
Germany tok great pride in leading the race among developed nations to achieve a net xero economy but now the folly of that policy is being exposed as gas supplies from Russia dry up and the inadequacies of wind and solar are exposed

EU Vows To Retaliate if Nord Stream Gas Pipeline Blasts Were Sabotage - But against whom, the USA?
Yesterday's shocking news that the Nord Stream 1 & 2 gas poipelines between Russia and Germany immediately triggered speculation about who is responsible, but as the facts emerge the knee jerk blaming of Russia has failed to convince because the attack bears all the halllmarks of a false flag event engineered by the usual suspects ...

Who Blew Up The Nordstream Pipeline
So whodunnit? Sabotage of undersea gas pipe will escalate tension and move the world closer to nuclear war, but who is behind it, Russia in a bid to put more presure on Europe, Ukraine in an attempt to drag NATO into direct action, or the USA using a CIA false flag event to advance its own agenda.

UK Government Belatedly Discovers The Uselessness Of Sustainables In Relation To Energy Security
The policy that Boris Johnson's Premiership will be remembered for is nor 'getting Brexit done,' but the government's disastrous pledge to make Great Britain the first developed nation to achieve a 'net zero' national energy system. The neglect and running down of traditional energy systems (coal, gas, nuclear,) along with flushing money down the toilet by investing in intermitternt power sources (wind, solar,) rather than Putin's war in Ukraine is responsible for the current crisis.

Green Energy & Net Zero: A Herd Of Elephants In The Room

The Cuadrilla Lancashire gas exploration wells yielded very high-quality natural gas from just a few fractures [ ... ]Claims that less than 1\100th of the gas resource of 37.6 trillion m3 could be extracted has been shown to be false, no actual UK data on gas recovery is available the claim was based on pre-2010 US data. Just 10% gas recovery from Bowland shale could supply 50 years’ worth of current UK gas demand.

Net Zero Will Lead To The End Of Modern Civilisation, Says Top Scientist
In a recently published science paper, Dr. Wallace Manheimer said Net Zero would be the end of modern civilisation. Writing about wind and solar power he argued it would be especially tragic “when not only will this new infrastructure fail, but will cost trillions, trash large portions of the environment, and be entirely unnecessary”.

Germany Forcing Farmers To Use LESS Fertilizer To Satisfy EU’s Green Agenda
The German government, already reeling from the public backlash against rising fuel prices, the shortage of gas since supplies from Russia were cut off, and the biggest economic crisis in the EU, has now jumped on another 'woke' bandwagon. The socialist led ruling coalition has banned farmers in one of its federal states from properly fertilizing land in compliance with the latest lunacy of the EU's green agenda ...

Germany haemorrhaging cash to keep country running on as ‘net zero’ becomes zeroeconomic activity
Germany was so desperate to achieve 'net zero' CO2 emissions that for years the country's government closed its fossil fuel-fired and nuclear power plants, replacing those plants with wind and solar power — as well as impoorting huge volumes of natural gas and oil from Russia. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, when NATO (aka the U.S.A.) mandated that the West impose retaliatory sanctions on Russia, including a ban on importation of Russian gas and oil, Germany found itself in a hole:

Just When We Need It Most, Renewable Energy Disappears
In an encouraging sign of a great awakening, million of people in the UK are now, after a week of brutally cold, absolutely windless weather asking "Why have we wasted so much money on wind turbines and harvesting solar energy."
Yet when politicians are asked directly: "How do we keep the lights on and our homes warm when the wind does not blow and the sun is too low in the sky to make much impression on photovoltaic cells that do the business in solar panels?

The Problems With Electric Vehicles (continued)

from Quora:

I’ve heard people worry about charging them, and they are quite right to worry about that. The usual counter argument is that “I can always find a place to charge and they’re putting in more”.

Well yes, possibly you can always find a place to charge whilst electric cars make up three per cent of those on the roads, but as soon as electric cars become the norm and not the exception, it’s going to be problematic.

Seen from a logistical point of view the problem is in the transportation of the fuel. Liquid fuels can be placed in a tanker and distributed that way. You can’t do that with electricity. It needs to be transported down wires. If all thirty-two and a half million cars on UK roads became electric, and only one per cent want charging, that’s 325,000. That’s smaller than the number of electric cars on the roads today for sure, since it’s about 1,000,000 (give or take) but again if the number wanting charging is only one per cent, that’s only ten thousand. There are in fact about 42,000 charging points across the UK but not all cars can use all points (some are private, some need adaptors) and so just to get to one per cent of all charging needs we need another 273,000 charging points. All of them need to tap from a live grid fed by a generating station.

Well, logistically, I suppose it can be done if you are determined enough but now we run into a technical problem. Because of this:

I total is the sum of currents for those nodes. Put simply, the wires between nodes 1&2 and 7&8 have to cope with the currents of R1, R2, and R3. Between 2&3 and 6&7 they only have to cope with R2&R3 and between 3&4 and 5&6 only that of R3.

That’s the sort of idea. Multiply that several times for several nodes and much lower resistances and you’ll see that some pretty big wires are going to be needed there if you don’t want them to melt. Having both worked with and made big wires, the adjectival phrase there is “not cheap”.

Plus we’ve got a finite current source. It might be nice to think that magic electric fairies will provide us with enough current to satiate our every need, but I’ve been in electrical and mechanical since 1982 one way or another and I’ve never laid eyes on such a creature yet. The Set-on-Fire fairy though, she turns up regularly if you aren’t careful. At some point whatever’s feeding the current will be topped. There are a number of ways you can do this but the easiest is a bangy fuse.

Then we’ve got the problem of what’s generating it. Wind and solar won’t cut it. The Germans are finding that out at the moment because the Energiewendepolitik they’re pursuing has managed to shove up the cost of the electricity and the carbon footprint. Krass. Danke, Tante Angela.

This means that we are either going to have lots of nukes (Greta says no) or lots of burny/bangy things (Greta says no again) making steam to rotate some big spinnies to get some electron-juice out. More than we have now. This means that we may have cleared up local pollution by running cars with no emmisions, but we’ve transferred it to central locations instead. The only other alternative is to use our cars for essential journeys and public transport for getting about and to and from work. Which is what I do now; hey, how bloody green am I without knowing it? Well, what’s a boy to do once he’s found that out? I’ve got a day off and so down to Next it is to get my ethnic skirt and sandals.

Then we come to the battery itself. I’m having this argument that the battery materials may have changed but the technology has not. Any battery you care to name provides a flow of charge that needs a couple of plates separated by an electrolyte. The technological equivalence of the Cruickshank battery of 1802 and the shiniest newest one coming out of a factory in China is therefore so close to 1 in the working principle that arguments are moot. The fact that we can stuff a microprocessor into the Foo-Qingbig battery is neither here nor there; the principle of charge and discharge is just the same as Cruickshank used in 1802 and Planté used in 1859.

One thing that is moving the equivalence to <1 is one of the reasons the microprocessor is there. Car makers are building grace capacities into their batteries. You can do this by linking together discrete lithium cells some of which don’t get used until others deteriorate. This means for years the battery won’t have any noticeable degradations. However, once the grace is used you’ll start to see this:

which is a graph of some Cadex played about with in their labs and is pretty much what we’d expect to see from a normal test. What you’re doing when you recharge a battery is shoving a current through it backwards; the anode becomes the cathode and vice-versa. Every time you do this you cause a tiny bit of irreversible damage to the battery. Tiny bits sum up to honking great bits. What we normally find is a gentle slope to 80% capacity, then a knee, where the rate of degradation becomes sharper. Shall I tell you that there isn’t a full understanding of the complete chain of chemical reactions in how a battery operates? We know how to work the materials, but we don’t fully understand why it does what it does in the reaction process. Sometimes we get surprises. Sometimes they’re bad ones.

The act of building in grace capacities is good as far as longevity is concerned but bad as far as battery mass is concerned because it means bigger, heavier batteries and adding more mass to a vehicle means more inertia to overcome from rest. It also increases the costs of the batteries.

So it’s not that we think they’re a scam. What we do think is that the Tesla Fanboys are hyping it up too much and they aren’t looking at how vehicles are used and the logistical and technical problems if instead of ten cars on the street being electric, a hundred are.

Now, people think I’m anti-electric vehicle. I’m not. I’ve made and repaired hundreds since 1982. Electric vehicles are great for certain jobs; can’t have a reach truck in a warehouse on any other power. Trams are quick and unobtrusive and a much better ride than busses (and I’m currently having the argument about whether it’s busses or buses too, you buses-nazis can all knob off because it’s either and busses was the way I did it at school and nobody red-penned that in a grammar, so stuff it up your arses without Vaseline) with their horrible Diesel knock, and all-electric trains you can hardly tell when you’re moving, unlike Diesel-electric when you certainly know when they’re setting off.

If you are a housewife who drops the kids off at school, then does an hour or so of poncing about in Lidl and seeing to your elderly granny, an electric car (providing you can charge it at home) is great for you. You’ll have less maintenance to do on it and it may well be cheaper than petrol. If you are somebody that depends on their car for getting round multiple sites though, spread far and wide, knocking up lots of miles per day, it’s not. You are going to need to fill it with six gallons of bangy hydrocarbons to get through your day and back home.

That latter isn’t what we’re being told, though. We’re being told that electric cars are the cure for all our transport evils, and they aren’t. That’s where the objections are coming from.
