In a statement on French radio yesterday France’s employment minister Michel Sapin made the shocking admission that the country is “totally bankrupt”. The bombshell came during a routine interview yesterday and is thought to have sent the country’s business leaders into a state of shock.
"There is a state but it is a totally bankrupt state," Mr Sapin, commenting on the employment law reforms that recently provoked strikes and civil disobedience said. "That is why we had to put a deficit reduction plan in place, and nothing should make us turn away from that objective."
Mr Sapin’s "totally bankrupt" admission is a huge embarrassment for President Francois Hollande and his socialist government, already showing record levels of unpopularity in opinion polls. Hollande, who will be left to undo the potential damage to his already almost non existent chances of re - election currently has a personal popularity rating of 11%.
The shock revelation also raises further questions about Hollande’s controversial “tax and spend” policies that have seen numerous entrepreneurs and high profile celebrities leave the country. By extension it should be a warning to voters in other nations who are toying with the idea of voting in a left wing government that socialism simply and inevitasbly does not work.
Sapin's comments come as Hollande attempts to inspire confidence if the French economy, which has been damaged not only by his loonytoons economics but by membership of the European Single Currency System (Euro). His pledge to reduce the country’s deficit by cutting spending by €60bn (£51.5bn) over the next five years and increasing taxes by €20bn (£17bn) looks doomed to fail as bureaucratic EU rules make businesses uncompetitive while inability to address economic problems because France shares a currency with the much stronger German economy has led high uneployment and low levels of investment.
Among those who moved their wealth out of France are Hollywood star Gerard Depardieu and the country's richest man Bernard Arnault.
There are even reports that Nicolas Sarkozy, the previous President of France, is preparing to move to London with his wife Carla Bruni for economic reasons.

Russia is a democratic country with a strong and popular leader, Vladimir Putin, the prominent French scholar and politician Yvan Blot told the Russian newspaper Lenta.ru. While it may stretch the credulity of the average European to accept that Russia is more democratic that even an oligarchy such as The United States, Monsieur Blot could be onto something according to recent opinion poll results in France.
Blot, a close friend and adviser to ex-French President Nicolas Sarkozy, presented his new book in Moscow called "Putin's Russia," in which he discusses that people in Europe have a prejudiced view of Russia. One of Yvan Blot's objectives in the book is to shatter myths about Russia and explain to Europeans that the country is no longer the Soviet Union.
The French politician added that around 40 percent of French citizens have a positive view of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Most of them are young people who actively use the Internet to form their own opinions about Russia and its leader, different from those peddled by the pro - establishment mainstream media, Blot explained.
"Vladimir Putin is currently more popular in France than President Francois Hollande, whose approval rating is around 20 percent," Blot told Lenta.ru, stating that the successful Russian military operation in Syria further helped to improve the image of Russia among French citizens.
Some people in the West might be surprised, but Blot thinks that right now Russia is more democratic than France. While he may have been thinking of how Hollande's socialist government had used the Bataclan terrorist outrage to curtail free speech, the politician brought up an example of how two French universities didn't want Blot teaching politics to students due to his conservative political leaning.
"It's called la pensee unique in France," (the belief that there is only one way of thinking) Blot said with sarcasm.
At the same time, mainstream French media has an anti-Russian and anti-Putin stance with propaganda strongly influencing the minds of French citizens, especially the older generation who believe everything that they hear on TV, Blot explained.
Blot is a conservative political figure and the founder of the Club de l'Horlage, a French national conservative association which focuses on the values of economic liberalism, nationalism and democracy. He is a former Member of the European Parliament, member of the National Front party and served as a leading civil servant at the French Interior Ministry.

French economy minister Emmanuel Macron earlier suggested Britain quitting the EU could lead to Paris ripping up a 2003 deal which allows UK border guards to be stationed in Calais.
Thousands of migrants live in makeshift camps near the French port before trying to reach the UK.
But Mr Macron said of possible Brexit : "The day this relationship unravels, migrants will no longer be in Calais."
Asked if No 10 was trying to stitch-up the referendum with doomsday warnings from foreign governments and big business, Mr Cameron insisted: “When you have ministers in other governments warning about potential consequences that might happen, that would be injurious to the UK - I would say listen to those things."
Cameron is of course desperate to kerp us in the EU, he is a committed supporter of global government and the EU bureaucracy's dream of creating a Federal European Superstate is a big step towards fulfillment of that goal. Last summer I had a bit of a kerfuffle here with someone who tried to give himself authority by mentioning that he worked in a university. Well lots of people work in universities of course, janiors, mainteance staff, gardeners, porters, catering people and so on.
Given the knack this guy possessed for being wrong about everything he could have been a lecturer, or even a Professor, he was certainly crazy enough.
What I had done to piss him off was see the brewing Black Sea crisis from a Russian point of view rather than simply parroting the White House / Whitehall / NATO propaganda demonising Putin and Russia and claiming Russia was isolated in the international community and the leaders of all other nations were queuing up to have their cock's sucked by the Rent Boy President Barack Husein Obama.
It wasn't true then and it is less true now. While it might seem obvious to note that Angela Merkel has chosen to pass on that dubious privilege, the absence of China, Iran and half the African nations from the Obama fan club is also signigicant.
Since the election of Syriza last week Greece has pivoted towards Russia, Egypt, Turkey, India and Brazil have all been cuddling the bear too.
Isolated, I think not. In fact it seems our friend from Dumedown University is the last one to wake up to the fact that Obama's US Administration is the real warmonger, the aggressor state, the power that likes to meddle in the domestic politics of small nations.
And now we see France and Germany openly dismissive of Obama's eagerness to arm the neo Nazi thugs who were shoehorned into power in Ukraine after last years CIA engineered coup.

Following yesterday's summary of the utter farce that the Minsk Summit/Ukraine "peace" deal talks have become, the various parties involved appear to be fracturing even faster today. The headlines are coming thick and fast but most prescient appears to be: Despite John Kerry's denial of any split between Germany and US over arms deliveries to Ukraine, German Foreign Minister Steinmeier slammed Washington's strategy for being "not just risky but counterproductive."
But perhaps most significantly is France's continued apparent pivot towards Russia... Following Francois Hollande's calls for greater autonomy for Eastern Ukraine, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has come out in apparent support of Russia (and specifically against the US), "we are part of a common civilization with Russia,” adding, "the interests of the Americans with the Russians are not the interests of Europe and Russia."
Even NATO appears to have given up hope of peace as Stoltenberg's statements show little optimism and the decision by Cyprus to allow Russia to use its soil for military facilities suggests all is not at all well in the European 'union'.
