Trump's Tariffs On EU Trade Are More Political Than Protectionist

 

 

Last Friday, (May 23) US President Donald Trump slapped a staggering 50% tariff on European Union goods, which will take effect from 1 June 2025, unless the EU agrees to significant changes in its trade policies. The escalation has kicked off  and a diplomatic crisis destabilised financial markets.

Trump’s proposal aims to reduce the EU’s huge trade surplus with the /USA ($550 billion in annual exports to the US, compared to $351 billion in US exports to the EU in 2022) which as has long been acknowledged, is mostly due to unfair trade barriers and protectionist policies operated by the EU to restrict inward trade to the bloc. Trump's outrageous tariff, given his style of politics, is probably a stunt which aims to force Brussels to renegotiate its terms for trading with the USA. 

The announcement is the latest in a list of aggressive trade rhetoric, where tariffs are proposed but sometimes softened when the target nation agrees to negotiate. The EU, the world’s largest trading bloc and an important ally of the US, now faces a reckoning over it's trade policies.

Typically EU leaders responded in their usual arrogant manner, announcing that Brussels is preparing for retaliation. Maros Sefcovic, the EU’s Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, emphasised a commitment to a “deal based on respect, not threats”. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin called the tariff threat “enormously disappointing”, arguing it undermines a vital trading relationship and global economic stability. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned that such tariffs would harm both economies and urging the EU to preserve market access.

An EU press release states the bloc has already drafted $108 billion in retaliatory tariffs, targeting US goods like agricultural products and machinery. The EU counter measures include tariffs on US steel and aluminium and levies on American whiskey and motorcycles whuch show the usual bureaucratic ineptitude, while the EU, due to its 'net zero' obsession has to import metals thus EU based buyers will just have to swalllow the cost of tariffs, US exports of whisky and motor cycles are insignificant.

Trump is right when he says the EU has been engaging in unfair trade practices for decades. Since the turn of the century the European Unionhas suppressed domestic demand through policies of austerity, fiscal restraint and wage compression as well as running import policies that make selling goods to member nations very difficult for US companies. This deflationary tactic along with the euro’s inherent deflationary bias) has been a deliberate strategy aimed at bolstering price competitiveness on the global stage, while at the same time reducing imports.

In effect, the EU has embraced a hyper-mercantilist, export-driven growth model, prioritising trade surpluses over internal economic development.Rather than get into a trade war with the Trump2 administration EU economists need to ask themselves what exactly is so very wrong about an “export led economic model” ?

If you are able to successfully export your goods, it is because you are producing either better goods than other countries and/or producing them at lower prices. These are precisely what Lord Young used to call “the problems of success”.

There is of course nothing wrong with an export led economic model, provided that there is also a willingness to embrace free trade as the sine qua non for making such a model sustainable in the long run. 

The problem with the EU is that it is a customs union and doesn’t believe in free trade, even frankly within its own borders (for example there has never been an effective single market in services, with all manner of national protections and barriers still in place). If you take a look at the tariff structures of the EU you’ll find that they tend to benefit the economic bases of the four biggest players; Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands. 

It also doesn’t believe in entrepreneurship or free market capitalism preferring instead corporatism and excessive, stifling regulations to sustain that. The consequence of this being aside from agricultural, basic commodity and legacy goods, the EU is getting left behind the rest of the world in terms of developing new technologies (EV’s, batteries, silicon, gene editing, AI, communications, electronics etc etc) and its becoming increasing hard to maintain any competitive advantage in the areas where it does export.

The Longer Ukraine Holds Out Against Surrender The More Territory They Will Lose

 

 Reports this week that Russian troops in Ukraine are pushing pushing Ukrainian forces back and that Moscow would bolster its military by adding two new armies and 30 new formations by the end of this year should be treated with the usual scepticism Boggart Blog always recommends applying to news from both sides in any conflict. However the fact that steadfastly pro - Ukie western news organisations have reported this without the usual pro - Kiev bias suggests there is a core of truth in it.

 

Russia, which invaded Ukraine in 2022, swiftly pulled back some of its forces in the east and south after over-extending early in the conflict but has been slowly advancing after a Ukrainian counteroffensive in 2023 failed to make significant gains.

 

Russia now controls approximately 20% of territory inside Ukraine's internationally recognised borders and President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to push further forward after Moscow took several small but strategically important towns earlier this year.

"Groups of Russian troops continue to squeeze the enemy out of their positions," Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told senior generals, according to offficial press releases. "The United States and its satellites are extremely concerned about the success of the Russian Armed Forces." Russia, which has recruited hundreds of thousands of contract soldiers, will create two new armies and 30 formations including 14 divisions and 16 brigades, Shoigu said.

 

Putin announced late last week that “Russia plans to create a buffer security zone along the Russian border” with Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk Regions, thus meaning inside the corresponding Ukrainian regions of Kharkov (once again), Sumy, and Chernigov. Unlike last year’s attempt, this latest one might be more successful due to the very different context within which it’s being pursued, particularly as regards the conflict’s new diplomatic and military dynamics.

RT chief Margarita Simonyan clarified that the Russian delegation in Istanbul didn’t threaten that their country would claim an additional Ukrainian region if Ukraine doesn’t withdraw from the four disputed ones, but four more for a total of eight regions (not counting Crimea). These could conceivably be all or part of Chernigov, Sumy, Kharkov, and Dniepropetrovsk Regions given Russia’s latest buffer zone plan unless Ukraine agrees to its demanded concessions before then. The longer the Ukies, in their collective madness, continue to insist Russia must agree to their terms before there can be an end to the fighting, the greater price they will pay. Yet Zelensky and the Kiev clown show are still approaching peace talks as if they and not Moscow are in the militarily commanding position.

With the Russian plan in mind and the four regions in question, Kiev, Cherkassy, and Poltava are either entirely or partially east of the Dnieper, Russia might call for the creation of a totally demilitarized “Trans-Dnieper” region controlled by non-Western peacekeepers. or demand the total demilitarization of  Ukraine. 

Regardless of what Moscow eventually offers, Putin’s newly announced buffer zone plan shows that Russia is expanding its goals, which makes sense considering that it’s winning and that Ukraine still refuses to comply with its demanded concessions for politically resolving the conflict. The longer that Ukraine refuses to agree to peace on Russia’s terms, the more land that it stands to lose, which might ultimately be much more than anyone expects if the US soon abandons Ukraine in order to cut its losses.

There is no mention at all the news as to how the Ukraine war  effort is being funded? We are not permitted to know whether the USA, UK or the EU are still providing arms and money to Ukraine? As the war grinds on is there any indication as to whether Ukraine can continue to find the man-power, arms or money to continue this war or has Zelensky mortgaged the entire catalogue of national assets to the major banks rather than admit defeat?

Furthermore war crimes have been committed, and are being committed, en masse by Ukraine, as evidenced, for example, in the Telegram channel “War Crimes in Ukraine” and tracked by Russian authorities: there will be all sorts of trials when the conflict is over. There is no doubt that Russian forces are also committing war crimes but extremely unlikely they, as eventual victors, will hold themselves to account. However the retribution demanded by Russia for Ukraines crimes is likely to be disproportionate, particularly as it is the Kiev regime that keeps escalating the war, and who will act as arbitrator between the two sides?

International law has no meaning whatsoever to USA that happily marches into any country on any occasion at the whim of its President. It was Donald Trump that drastically increased financial support and military aid to Ukraine during his first term; at the same time, CIA set up the 20 hidden bases on the Russian border to Ukraine, training Ukrainians to kill Russians.

Nobody has damaged Ukraine more than Zelensky who was voted into office (once) on the basis of, if necessary, going on his knees to achieve peace. As soon as he came into office, somehow everything changed (very common with today’s politicians) and he did an about-face, and hving led Ukraine into war is now doing all he can to prolong the slaughter. So bad are things in Ukraine now that even Zelensky's closest allies are calling on him to seek peace.

And should western governments go ahead and steal the $300 billion Russian investments – they are already stealing the interest – to compensate themselves for throwing away so much money on what was always a lost cause, just  watch the West’s financial collapse as the rest of the world sees how unsafe investments in this part of the world have become.

All in all, our leaders have immersed the world in a diabolical mess.

Trump Triggers Woke Wankers Again With His Acceptance Of White South African Refugees

 

US President Donald Trump has once again seems to have sent denizens of the liberal media  into a collective meltdown over his confrontation with South Africa's President Ramaphosa about the ANC government's treatment of White South Africans. During their meeting Trump arranged for a video clip of senior politicians from Ramaphosa's ruling party shouting "Kill the Boer" leaving the South African president meekly protesting that it's not "government policy" (as if its not being official policy makes it OK then?) and then begging Trump to take the conversation private to avoid further public embarrassment. The incident dominated US news for a couple days with the usual suspects  lining up to scream 'racism'. 

Embarrassing Ramaphosa was an obvious stunt but as usual with Trump what you see is only part of what you get so what was Trump really trying to achieve. He certainly succeeded in triggering liberals and progressives in the USA

Maybe he was working to distract from the ongoing and obvious genocide being perpetrated in Gaza. Israeli troops recently fired warning shots at UN diplomats from more than 20 countries and is coming under more pressure so Trump is doing his part to distract the broadly pro Palestinian press corps media by making a scene in the White House.
 

Or was he trying to shine a light on Liberal hypocrisy by drawing attention to the brutal and well documented abuse of the White Afrikaners in the "new" South Africa and let the media discredit itself by showing its' anti-white bias to the wider public.

Alternatively it may have been a bid to concoct a justification to boycott the G20 in South Africa and eventually impose sanctions on South Africa over there abuse of White Afrikaners (in reality this would be over BRICS attempts to undermine the status of the US dollar as the main reserve currency for world trade.)

Spineless Starmers Shameless Chagos Sellout Sacrifices Britains Honour

 When a High Court judge this morning temporarily blocked the Prime Traitor Kweir Smarmer from giving away the Chagos Islands to Mauritius pending a hearing over a challenge to the move, it looked as though our ruling elite might be about to come to its senses. Alas that impression only lasted a few hours before another judge, one of Smermer's human rights cronies in the judiciary shat on the human rights of the Chagossians by removing the block.

The first action was humiliating for the Prime Minister, forcing him to cancel today’s ‘signing ceremony’ and the bash he planned to celebrate his latest treason. The second was humiliating to the entire nation, establishing beyond doubt that Britain is now a third world shithole run by crooks, grifters and other types of shyster lawyers

What amazes me is the second High Court judge looked at the "evidence" for 20 minutes and decided there was no reason to stop Smarmers crooked deal going ahead even though constitutionally the Prime Minister is not empowered to make such a deal without it being approved by Parliament. Really, this intervention was not that simple but complex, an in depth investigation should have taken several months, and exposed the unpalatable truth behind Starmers hubris action, i.e. that our Prime Minister hates Britain and wil do anything to harm our national interest.

But the Judges took a quick look, and said No Way! We're not having common sense getting in the way of the socialist agenda. You might think they were influenced by their once Boss, the former Director of Public Prosecutions and current Prime Minister, when they put their tea and biscuits down after having decided it was better to do as they were told..

We The People shold be asking how is it possible for one minister to give away a British territory ithout Parliamentary debate? And how is it possible for one jude to block this, and another to overturn the block?

These Marxist arse merchants have turned British government into the Commedia del Arte, a kind of Punch and Judy show featuring real actors.

Starmer’s actions throughout this whole farrago have been totally illegal, just like his illegal occupation of the Prime Minister’s post, having deceived the nation about his background and family status.. He has no right to give away British Territory, nor to violate and overturn the British Voters’ Referendum on Brexit, nor to violate the civil rights granted to English citizens by the Magna Carta by imprisoning “free men” (and women, e.g. Tommy Robinson, Lucy Connolly,   without “the lawful judgment of their peers”.

The globalist clique behind this maintains that the UK is not a sovereign country but simply a UN member region the UN has ultimate authority over. British ships must not sail to any ports unless the UN agrees. British planes must not fly or land anyhwre unless the UN agrees. The most risible part by far of Smarmer's efforts to justify this surrender to an alien power (the United Nations where the idea was conceived,) is the claim that ceding territory to a foreigh nation  which is a close ally of Communist China will improve the standing of the UK in the world because many countries would believe that the Chagos islands belonged to Mauritius and not the UK. But a reputation for being a pushover is certainly never useful on foreign politics which are ultimately about authority derived from power.

Britain under Starmer is becoming an anti-free-speech superpower where citizens can and do get jailed for years for a careless word or two. But on the international stage, it must not be anything but a patsy, a catamite to communist tyrants

Starmer's Shabby Sellout To EU Is A Betrayal Of Britain

 

The UK / EU 'reset' summit, talked up by Prime Minister Smarmer as the gateway to a huge boost for British business is now revealed to have neen nothing but a sellout, a wide-ranging surrender to Brussels aimed at handing control of UK policy back to the EU bureaucrats across key areas such as defense, energy, migration, law enforcement, and youth mobility, with a view to eventually rejoining the corrupt, authoritarian bloc — a deal that critics argue is a flagrant rowback on Brexit and a first step to taking us back into the Euronazi 4th Reich..

Announced on Monday, the so-called Common Understanding outlines both sides’ intention to build on existing post-Brexit frameworks, including the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement.

While the agreement does not constitute a new treaty to replace Boris Johnson's deal, it signals a shift toward closer integration in several sectors that bring the U.K. back into line with EU rules and institutions, undermining national sovereignty.

The agreement restates reciprocal access to fishing waters until June 2038 and extends bilateral cooperation on energy. It also launches a new Security and Defense Partnership covering topics such as increased support for Ukraine, cyber defense, defence spending, and space security. Dialogue is also planned in areas like maritime terrorism and international disaster response.

Access to fishing grounds has been a bone of contention since the 2016 Brexit vote and is seen as a major sellout and a betrayal of the UK fishing industry by Starmer.  Ahead of the news breaking, rumors had been swirling in Westminster that fishing rights were on the table, leading Reform UK leader Nigel Farage to warn, “If true, that will be the end of the fishing industry.”

Fishing industry spokesmen said industry members are outraged by Starmer's stab in the back and are considering action.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch commented, “Twelve years’ access to British waters is three times longer than the government wanted. We’re becoming a rule-taker from Brussels once again. And with no details on any cap or time limits on Youth Mobility, fears of free movement returning will only increase. This is very concerning.”     

 Other recent actions by Starmer and his government suggest they are not only intent on selling us out to the EU but on making us a client state of China.

 

The new mobility framework proposed in the deal is for young people, allowing limited-duration travel between the U.K. and EU for work, study, volunteering, and other cultural purposes. In parallel, the U.K. and EU will begin discussions about associating the UK with the EU’s Erasmus+ program, including negotiation over financial terms. These discussions are framed as promoting “people-to-people” ties, especially among younger generations. Put bluntly this makes lies of all Starmer's promises to curb inflation as it opens the doors to millions of unskiled, poorly educated job seekers from Europe's pooer nations as well as those who have entered Europe illegally from third world nations.

University Boom About To Go Bust

The higher education system has been circling around the pan for a couple of decades – excessive student debt, universities in financial trouble, woke activism disrupting serious activities, excessive dependence on foreign students, rampant LGBT propagandising, degrees in silly subjects, trivial research projects – it’s a familiar story.

Somehow, it all trundles along, aided by vested interests and politicians who kick as many problems as possible into the long grass. But now technology is bringing a new threat to academic business-as-usual – in the form of AI.

Modern universities are not about iculcating the cultural values of disinterested learning and scholarship. Higher Education has been turned into an industry, they are run as businesses and are expected to make a profit, which is why they have become scholastic sausage machines, processing young people for a labour market thet neeeds people with practical skills rather than heads full of theory. A degree is still an essential ticket to most regular well-paid jobs but such jobs and carers exist in limited numbers. Higher education institutions must be able to certify that the sausages they process meet a certain minimum standard, but also to differentiate the best from the also-rans. They need an assessment system.

For most of the twentieth century, assessment depended largely on unseen timed examinations. Invigilated by beady-eyed disciplinarians, these were a rite of passage which we all used to endure.

But things have changed and most critiques of modern education overlook the elephant in the room….our Universities are a hot bed of indoctrination, driven by leftwing ‘academics’.

It is not long ago when only around 15% of school leavers went on to University. That was not simply because only 15% of the younger population were bright enough to attend but also because University education but also that higher education prepares people for  a career or vocation which while usually highly paid, makes up only around 15% of the jobs market. Then we entered the era of politically correct dogma and government by virtue signalling. 

Driven by crackpot thinking and a determination to make abslutely everybody absolutely equal Blair’s Gaybour Party government decided that at least 50% of school leavers had to go to university, and because of the socialist dogma of equality all those 50% had to get a degree of some kind. No child left behind was one of the slogans adopted by the Gaybour government'd education department.

Shoehorning 50% of schol leavers into university education meant the quality of higher education education had to be watered down; new universities sprasng up, if not quite on every streetcorner then certainly in every large town, and introduction of meaningless courses (e.g. film studies, black history, PPE,  LGBT theory,)  helped to cater for the 32% that shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

Another factor in the decline of University education is thar graduates were geared towards solving problems in society. Now they get desmonds (a 2.2 degree) in PPE, become SPADS to politcians and thus create them.

Progressive educationalists told us that traditional exams relied too heavily on memory, and tested only a limited range of skills. Modern exams obviously do not test ANY skills as people are graduating without any. This is reflected in the kind of jobs graduates take up. Now even baristas have degrees (in making pretty patterns on top of your coffee?  The university industry is peddling a lie to see higher education. Not everyone will get a job sufficient to pay off the massive loans students must take out to finance their tuition and live while attending their courses. Naturally we long suffering taxpayers the tax payer will be shafted to pay for those who defaut. 

The political reason for all this waste of resources is to massage unemployment figures whilst putting young people through the progressive left brainwashing programme with expensive low quality degrees that have little use in the real world. Only the top 20% at most need to be at university and that includes those whose courses properly belong in polytechnics, the rest should be in vocational training or employment or practising their entrepreneurial ability.
