A bunch of warmongers who see themselves as the main defenders of the so - called Western ‘rules-based international order,’ aka the US / European liberal consensus have meeting at the annual Munich Security Conference this weekend, a jamboree at which assorted nobodies get to strut around pretending thy are world leaders. This year, the focus has been on Russia as usual, but also on US President Donald Trump and the ‘populist’ threat in Europe.

The first two days provided a feast of warmongering as first NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte told Europe to prepare for war with Russia while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz again vowed to build “the strongest conventional army in Europe." So far there have been no reports of delegates laughing so hard at this pledge they gave themselves a hernia.
The reason for all this war talk is of course the need to demonise Russia and its leader Vladimir Putin in order to prop up support among European populations for contnuing the futile war in Ukraine. War is always the last resort of fail politicians and few in history have failed as catastrophically as the current crop of European leaders without actually losing a war.
Speaking on Saturday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the conference that Europe must be ready to fight to protect its people, values, and way of life and that he has never lost a fight he has been in, (this is clearly because he has never been in a fight.) The PM stressed the continent must "stand on its own two feet" when it comes to defence commitments. During his speech, Starmer also said the Royal Navy would deploy its Aircraft carrier strike group to the Arctic and High North as part of efforts to bolster security against Russian threats.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio tried to bridge the rift Trump caused with the EU by demanding that the USA be given control of Greenland, and imposing tariffs on any nation that opposed him. Rubio invoked the old ‘common adversaries’ narrative to urge US-EU unity. The UK’s Keir Starmer parroted claims that Russia could attack NATO by 2030 – a scenario that Moscow (and anyone with a grain of common sense,) ridicules – to push Europe to spend more taxpayer money on the military.
A theme of Trump's foreign policy in his second term as in his first is that for fifty years the USA has been catrying the burden of defending the free world alone as European leaders pursued virtue signalling policies like Net Zero and Open Borders. Unfortunately such policies have bankrupted all major European economies and they can't even afford decent boots for their soldiers let alone the kind of weaponry needed o take on Russia.
