The secret of freedom lies in educating people, whereas the secret of tyranny is in keeping them ignorant. - Maximilien Robespierre.

Paris Horror Demonstrates Limits On Tolerance And Need For Border Controls

scene in Paris, 14 November, 2015 (Screen capture from BBC News)

Because of Britain's position on the globe I was relaxing with a glass of wine when news of the Paris massacre, the latest terrorist outrage committed by the forces of ISIS (Islamic State) started to break. Normal TV programs were interrupted and rolling news channels dropped all coverage of other topics. Is it coincidence that only yesterday afternoon this blog was reporting the latest escalation by the Russians of their effort to end the fundamenalist Islamic rebellion in Syria, and earlier we mentioned U.s. Senator Lindsay Graham's call for US aircraft to shoot down Russian aircraft attacking US sponsored and trained 'assets' involed in the Obama administration's bid to topple the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

The deployment of S400 (Growler) missiles, reputedly the most powerful and technically advanced Surface To Air missiles ever is not aimed at ISIS of course, the rebels have no warplanes. It is a warning by Russia for the Americans to think very carefully before interfering with Russia's propping up of Assad

The Paris massacre is not a response to that Russian action, or to Russia's rout of ISIS in Syria, it happened too quickly afterwards and hitting France does not hurt Russia. But it does send out the message, just as the west is shamed by Russia and Iran to stop pussyfooting around pretending to oppose ISIS while hoping the jihadists will depose Assad for them, that as the war in Syria and Iraq swings against ISIS, the Islamic extremists see their only hope of survival is to bring the horrific bloodshed that is their trademark to the streets of Europe, and eventually we must anticipate, the USA and Canada.

And the Politically Correct immigration policies policies of western governments have made it to do that.

from Breitbart London

BEDFORD, United Kingdom – As the distressing attacks in Paris were occurring last night, some of Britain’s most high profile and notorious Islamist extremists gathered just north of London, unimpeded, to tell hundreds of British Muslims to “struggle” for an “Islamic State.” Breitbart London was there.

At the “Quiz a Muslim” event held last night in the Corn Exchange in Bedford, panelists called British values were “junk”, demanded that Muslims should “define” British law, and ominously, appeared to suggest Muslims were at war with the British.

The event was organised and chaired by Bedford-born blogger Dilly Hussain; an avid Islamist and a supporter of a global Islamic caliphate.

Mr Hussain described the event as “sort of like an Islamic Question time” – except during Question Time, there are usually disagreements. This event saw an all-male panel of “community leaders” talking to a completely segregated room, with little to disagree on.

Our left wing, 'liberal' and 'progressive' friends will wring their hands and say, "but we must not characterise all Muslims as terrorists. Quite true, but the left have for several years shouted down any suggestion that we need to abandon 'open doors' immigration policies and strengthen border controls as 'racism'.

Well the Paris attacks were certainly racism, born out of the hatred felt in certain middle eastern cultures to western, religiously liberal and tolerant cultures. So why, to avoid being accused of racism, must we in the west tolerate the racism of which we are the targets?"

The case for border controls is not racist of course, it is, as has been demonstrated, self preservation. Not all Muslims are terrorists, most are not, but if we are going to let in anybody who arrives at our borders, how to we filter out the one in maybe a thousand, maybe five thousand, who is a violent extremist.

The answer is we can't. And now they are already here and are radicalising the children of people who genuinely migrated to the west to make a new life in our secular societies. And as we saw in Paris, or in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania in 2001, it only takes a small number of people prepared to die for their cause to reduce civilized counties to chaos.

Putin Lines Up The Big Guns As Obama 'Shoots Golf' And Kerry Vacillates

We learn from the news feeds that Vladimir Putin has ordered an advanced anti-aircraft missile defense system to be deployed in Syria. The S-400 Air Defense System, known to NATO as SA-21 'Growler', has arrived at at the Latakia Airbase, the Russian military operations HQ on Syria's coast.

With a range capable of taking down jets as far away as Tel Aviv and at altitudes of up to 90,000 feet, if launched from the heavily-defended airbase, the missile system is effective within an area covering most of Syria, southern Turkey, Cyprus, the eastern Mediterranean and much of Israel.

The missile system comes in three sections, with a central control point, a radar complex capable of tracking 300 targets and controlling six anti-aircraft missile launchers. .

The Russian military released photographs of the advanced missile system, which is understood to have a maximum range of 250 miles is capable of bringing down high flying warplanes which operate at more than twice the height of a cruising passenger airliner.

According to Russia news website Sputnik News, the S400 is the most advanced weapon of its type in existence and easily outguns anything in the USA / NATO arsenal.

Meanwhile US Secretary of State John Kerry said that prospects of progress towards a peace deal for Syria are unlikelt to be advanced at this weekend’s Syria peace talks. But he says the diplomatic effort to end the war cannot be abandoned. Kerry said that at the present time the elements necessary to forge peace may not exist, but "time and turbulence" can create new opportunities. However, he acknowledged that participants had to bridge vast differences to succeed, saying those involved are not on "the threshold of an agreement".

According to a leaked version of the latest draft Russian proposal, Moscow wants ally Assad to stay in office during an 18-month transitional period. For Washington and its Western and Arab allies, this is impossible.

"Asking the opposition to trust Assad or to accept Assad’s leadership is simply not a reasonable request. It’s literally a nonstarter,” Kerry warned. “On this point, I acknowledge that we are still working through with Russia and Iran the question of Assad and his role, this has not been settled."

Meanwhile, Russia accused the United States of trying to hijack advance negotiations for the weekend meeting. The charge was denied by U.S. officials. The dispute focused on U.S.A's assuming it would take the lead role in the talks, and was significant in reflecting the tensions between the two main players whose diplomatic muscle is key to hopes of progress. The intervention of US Senate' hawk Lindsay Graham who, as we reported earlier, has said the USA should shot down Russian aircraft that are attacking US military assets (US backed terrorists) in Syria probably did not help.

Kerry is due to join Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and counterparts from other nations that include adversaries Iran and Saudi Arabia on Saturday (14 November, 2015).

Barack Obama, reprising his role as 'The Invisible Man' of world politics (he's probably on holiday again, it must be all of a week since his last vacation) seems to have lost interest in the Syria problem, as he alwys does when things are not going his way.

Truth Leaked: US Senator Admists USA and ISIS Are Allies In Mid East

We are not the only blog or alternative news site that has been reporting throughout the year that rather than being an enemy of he USA, ISIS is its ally, a fighting force organized and trained by US agents to fight Obama's proxy war on behalf of his Wahabi Muslim allies against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad. (Right: Linday Graham (Image source)

In fact several prominent figures in Washington have admitted it. The latest of these is South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, an avowed hawk who supports any US war, anywhere (well war is very good for business), says he would shoot down Russian planes in Syrian airspace in order to protect U.S. backed rebel forces in the region.

“First thing I would do is tell Putin that, if you bomb the people that we train in Syria, I shoot your plane’s down,” the Republican presidential candidate said on AM970 The AnswerTuesday morning, before slamming President Obama for letting the Russian military bomb targets on behalf of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“I would tell him, Putin, you’re not going to attack the people we train. I would arm the Ukrainians so they could fight back for their own freedom. I would export natural gas to Europe to undercut his monopoly and I would tell him that Assad’s going to go. We’re gonna deal with ISIL first.”

“I would put Putin on notice that you’re not going to destabilize countries with military intervention,” Graham said.

“I would shoot his planes down, I would literally shoot his planes down if he attacked the people we trained because we have to do that. It is not right by the American president to entice people to come to a fight, train and equip them, side with them on their cause, and sit back and watch them being slaughtered by an adversary of their people and adversary of the United States.”

Clearly Graham has not heard the comments made by a senior military officer on the topic of armed confrontation with Russia. The General said American forces would by anihilated by Russia's superior military technology. And that's just Russia, if the Chinese joined in as they certainly would, the USA and most of Western Europe would not exist in any meaningful sense of the term.

Politically Unbiased BBC Launches Left Wing Attack On Donald Trump For Illegal Immigrants Stance

Illegal immigrants threaten to overwhelm police as they try to get to Germany (Picture source)

No doubt some brainwashed left wing idiots will try to claim I am a Trump supporter for saying this, but the BBC are well out of order here. Mr. Trump is a contender for the chance to be Republican Party candidate in the United States Presidential election, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is required by its (now rarely observed) charter to avoid political partisanship.

To publish partisan views on the democratic process of another nation is doubly out of order. OK, everybody is entitled to an opinion but the BBC is rather different to UK only publishers or broadcasters; not only because of its status as Britain's publicly funded official broadcaster, but because as well as having the highly regarded World Service radio channel, it also has a US TV channel, BBC America.

So clearly, involving a British QANGO (Quasi - Autonomous Non Governmental Organisation in US Presidential elections is wrong or the democratic process of any nation other than Britain (where BBC Programmes are not officially allowed to take sides, although the left wing bias is acknowledged by BBC bosses).

Only Yesterday, Swedish MP Kent Ekeroth, told Breitbart London the poll - topping Swedish party intended to protest to the UK regulator over the BBC's alleged political bias in portraying his party, which is opposed to the integration of EU member states into a single political entity, as a "Neo Nazi” party. On the same day a BBC News reporter covering the EU Malta summit said (untruthfully) that all EU leaders agreed in an era of globalism, mass migration is a fact and cannot be reversed, so the debate should be about how to manage it.

Now the publicly funded broadcaster, which is often said to be the most influential news broadcaster in the world, has turned its guns on U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, in an article entitled: "Donald Trump wants to deport every single illegal immigrant – could he?

Viewers of the Republican presidential debate on Tuesday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin will be aware of the heated exchange with Gov. Jeb Bush, who ostensibly wants to do very little about the "12 million” illegal immigrants in the United States (mainly because the Bush clan's big business buddies benefit hugely from the cheap labour of illegal immigrants), and Donald Trump, who wants to see a policy of repatriation, and a preference for legal immigrants.

But the BBC's report – which coincided with a Newsnight video hit job – begins: "US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump wants to deport every illegal immigrant from the United States. The other Republican candidates say it can't be done – one called it a "silly argument”.”

The corporation, which has also been the subject of investigations for anti-Israel bias, as well as on the receiving end of accusations of left-wing political bias in the United Kingdom, leans heavily on the testimony of the ‘Center For American Progress' – avowedly left wing, pro-mass migration organisation run by a former Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton employee. The organisation enjoys the financial support of the left-leaning Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as the the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates.

Where the BBC really loses the plot as it has over Europe's illegal immigrant crisis, is if they're illegal immigrants (or bogus refugees and asylum seekers) then surely they should be deported. Only ultra-marxists Labour Party supporters and BBC media luvvies could see a problem with that.

Read any of the stories about German or Scandinavian towns undergoing social breakdown and on the verge of economic collapse because they have neither the money nor the infrastructure to support the sheer numbers of illegal immigrants arriving.

From enthusiastically encouraging immigrants just a few weeks ago, the governments of Sweden and Germany have no realised their societies cannot cope with the numbers arriving and with the lawlessness those arrivals bring with them. Sweden, not long ago one of the safest nations in the world, is now the rape capital of Europe, while Germany is close to civil unrest as migrant gangs simply refuse to be bound by German law. Both governments are now appealing to the EU to save them, yet the Bureaucrats of Brussels are making deals with African tyrants that will bring more immigrant to Europe.

I guess these self righteous, guilt - junkie elitists just feel so good about themselves, having been seen by the brainwashed left to be caring, sharing, join-hands-and-sing-Kumbayaing 'progressives that they are willing to accept consequences that will inevitably result in the fall of western civilization. There really is no cure for stupid.

That's the lovely irony in the moral relativism of the left however.

We have a self - styled elite that claims to be enlightened, educated, and civilized, and who happen to live in societies where the highest legal power is not a person, but the rule of law (Marcus Tullius Cicero, in 70BC defined civilization as "When our ancestors came out of the hills and forests and learned to live under the rule of law.) Then these enlightened paragons of greatness simply state that the law should be ignored if a person doesn't like that law in the name of diversity and multiculturalism.

This is the basis of civil disobedience, a hallmark of leftist protests. They think that because they are a (self-declared) intellectual elite (smarter than everyone else), that they get to choose which laws should be followed and which are "racist, sexist, homophobic and regressive" and should be willfully broken.

In essence, they reject the rule of law, and go back to the individual person making the law, and each one of them is their own king.

Thus when the BBC attacks Donald Trump's position on illegal immigrants, it is really attacking his defence of the rule of law, the foundation of our civilized world.

Debt: The Developed World Has Lost Touch With Economic Reality

The Debt Timebomb

When I noticed a headline 0ver a story on the Zero Hedge financial website which proclaimed the US National Debt is three times higher than the published figure it attracted my attention not because this was news to me. If we are talking about Sovereign debt (the amount the government owes) then the figure 0f $65 trillion seems reasonable; the $18trillion figure usually quoted is 'The National Debt' the total of treasury bonds held by US citizens and businesses. And the total debt, when we bear in mind that the USA is a federation of fifty states, is several times higher than that, although estimated figures vary wildly.

Dave Walker, head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) under Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush, said, "If you add to that $18.5 trillion the unfunded civilian and military pensions and retiree healthcare, the additional underfunding for Social Security, the additional underfunding for Medicare, various commitments and contingencies that the federal government has, the real number is about $65 trillion rather than $18 trillion, and it’s growing exponentially as spending continues to outstrip revenue, adding to the interest liability on debts."

The former comptroller general, whose job is to ensure government spending is fiscally responsible, said the groing debt burdennational hampers the ability of government to carry out domestic and foreign policy obligations.

"If you don’t keep your economy strong, and that means to be able to generate more jobs and opportunities, you’re not going to be strong internationally with regard to foreign policy, you’re not going to be able to invest what you need to invest in national defense and homeland security, and ultimately you’re not going to be able to provide the kind of social safety net that we need in this country," he said.

Walker concluded that the American government have lost touch with reality when it comes to spending and called for Democrats and Republicans to put aside partisan politics to come together to fix the problem.

but the USA is not alone is suffering from a mounting, and unsustainable debt burden, the problem is endemic throughout the developed world not from political malfeasance which, by masking the problem rather than tackling it only serves to make the consequences worse.

UK's Real Debt
The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has calculated that the UK national debt is £4.8 trillion once state and public sector pension liabilities are included, or £78,000 for every person in the UK. Given that UK bonds have a coupon value (nominal interest rate) of 3.5% that means the government is paying £2780 (more than £50 a week for each of us)

The IEA raised its concerns, and called on the government to reveal the true debt level after the latest public finance data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the total debt, excluding bank bail-outs, is £816bn – itself a record high. However, these figures do not include the state's pension liabilities which contravention standard accounting practices.

IEA's director-general Mark Littlewood said: "The latest official national debt figure is seriously misleading. Looming in the background are pension liabilities. These should be moved to the forefront.

"The ONS should include these liabilities in their calculations. It is shocking enough to see official figures revealing a jump in national debt over the last year from the equivalent of 48pc of GDP to 56pc, but the grave reality is that our real national debt stands at 333pc of GDP."

IEA research fellow Nick Silver said the full figure, including the £1.2 trillion public sector pension liability and £2.7 trillion state pension liability, should be published either monthly or annually alongside the net debt data for reasons of transparency.

The ONS began publishing the full list of Britain's debts and liabilities in July this year.

Aileen Simkins, ONS director of operations on economic statistics, said the figures would be updated in September and that the ONS plans to compile and release them on an annual basis "to begin with".

In common with most European nations and the USA, the UK government has become adept at disguising important economic figures, although the task of making the economic data from the developed world look positive is akin to polishing a turd, the true depth of the disaster caused by mismanagement of financial systems because of pressure from the politically correct left has so far been masked sufficiently to maintain the status quo in politics.

France is in free fall

The euro zone’s second-largest economy is suffering more than any other member except for Greece from a shocking deterioration in competitiveness. And rather than acting to stop it, France's socialist government are admitting multitudes of unemployable, illiterate immigrants and paying them welfare benefits, implementing more and more restrictive labour laws, raising taxes (and especially tax on business profits) ever higher and doing the exact opposite of what is needed to turn around their country's economic decline.

Surprisingly, the yield on France’s ten-year government bonds stands at just 2%, just a few ticks above Germany’s (yield is the real interest rate on bonds rather than the 'coupon value' mentioned elsewhere). Such headline numbers suggest France is not in nearly as much trouble as the derisively titled "PIIGS" debtor nations, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain. So far, the trajectory of its debts and deficits isn’t as distressing as the figures for the PIIGs, or even the U.K. and the U.S.

That investor confidence stems, however, from France's assumed parity with Germany in the European integration project. As the EU nations move towards 'ever closer integration' the bankers reason, the German economic miracle will prop up the more developed economies in the Euozone.

France’s role in creating the euro and long term committment to uniting EU member stated into a single political entity enhances its aura of solidity. It was Socialist French President Francois Mitterrand who in 1989 persuaded Chancellor Helmut Kohl to back monetary union in exchange for France’s support for German reunification. In fact, France and Germany, along with the Netherlands, dramatized their commitment by effectively uniting the Franc and Deutschemark in a currency union that held their exchange rates in a narrow band, and heralded the euro’s birth in 1999. In the boom years of the mid-2000s, France virtually matched Germany as the twin growth engine of the thriving, 17-nation eurozone.

A deeper look shows that France is stuck in a perpetual economic crisis. Due to an unafforable welfare bill caused by mass immigration, offshoring of jobs and an ageing population, the french economy cannot meet its oblicagtios AND service its debts. The eurozone’s second-largest economy (2012 GDP: 2 trillion euros) is suffering more than any other member from a shocking deterioration in competitiveness. Put simply, France’s products — its cars, steel, clothing, electronics — for reasons mentioned above cost far too much to produce compared with competing goods both from Asia and its European neighbors, including not just Germany but even Spain and Italy.

Greece's Debt Crisis - The Daddy
http://www.ft.com/indepth/greece-debt-crisis

Like most nations, the Greek government relies on borrowed money to balance its books. Most developed nations have been relying on borrowing to even out the bumps of the global downturn and using public spending to keep unemployment levels manageable. The recession made things harder to manage because tax revenues started falling just as welfare payments to unemployed people started to rise. It doesn't help that tax evasion is the cultural norm in Greece and pension rights are unusually generous.

Unfortunately, investors have lost confidence in the Greek political establishment so they have been demanding ever higher rates of interest to compensate for the risk that they might not get their money back. The higher its borrowing costs, the harder it is for the Greek economy to grow itself out of trouble.

Events began to spiral out of control when credit rating agencies downgraded Greek government debt to "junk" status, pushing the cost of borrowing so high that the country in effect had its credit cards cancelled, because it could not pay the monthly interest due on existing debt. That put the Greek government in the position of being unable to meet obligations such as wages and pensions because it could not sell bonds to fund its day to day activities. Fearing default (bankruptcy), Greece had to turn instead to the European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – the world's lender of last resort – for 120bn euros of emergency lending.

Political opposition in Germany and IMF fiscal conservatism in Washington dictated that the rescue package had austerity strings attached: a tough series of public sector cuts designed to reassure international investors that the government can become creditworthy again.

The problem with that is the traditional response to runaway debt, devaluation, is not available because Greece's membership of the single-currency European Monetary System (EMS) ties it to the German powerhouse economy. If one EMS member wanted to devalue they would all have to do the same. And that would be against Germany's interests. This means the Greek government cannot stimulate economic growth by devaluing its currency, and nor can it cut interest rates, which would help, because these are decided by the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. Instead, ever deeper public sector cuts and more ferocious austerity are almost certain to deepen the Greek recession, reducing tax revenues and making it even harder to service the debts in future.

What many investors fear is that the only way out of this vicious circle is for Greece to walk away from its existing debts and try to go it alone – potentially triggering a wave of similar defaults in other indebted European countries, and jeopardising the euro itself. In the meantime, what many Greeks fear is that the IMF option is just going to prolong the agony – and drive the country to the brink of political as well as economic collapse.

What constitutes 'Sovereign Debt'
(this section uses UK economic conditions for its eaxamples)
Debt simply refers to the amount of money owed by the a government. This is the amount of unredeemed borrowing that has been built up over many years by many governments.

But use the word carefully. The most regularly quoted debt figure is actually the net debt of the UK; in other words, the total debt minus the government's liquid assets.

An easy way to compare debt levels across different countries is to express debt as a percentage of total economic output, or GDP, which is why you'll hear commentators regularly talk about the debt-to-GDP ratio. Obviously this has risen sharply since 2007. Beware though, GDP only measures money circulating around the economy. I buy £50 worth of goods from you, you replace your stock from the wholesalers and pay a repair bill with the £20 profit, the wholesale gives his warehouse man a £30 bonus and the handyman spends his £20 on new tools and my £50 has increased GDP by £150.

According to the Office for Budget Responsibility, the UK's debt will keep on rising for a number of years. So if anyone tries to tell you that UK debt (as the current government have recently) is falling, they are wrong. In the recent case the deficit is falling but that's a different thing.

The current budget deficit, or surplus, is the difference between the government's everyday expenses and its revenues; in other words, between what it spends and what it receives. In recent years, it has spent a lot more than it receives, so we are used to hearing about a budget deficit. The government thinks if they say it quickly we will be deceived into thinking deficit and debt are the same.

If a government spends less than it receives (stop laughing at the back), it would be running a budget surplus. This may seem a strange concept in today's economic climate, but between 1998 and 2001 we had four straight years of surplus. In fact, there was a surplus every year between 1947 and 1974.

Both the government and opposition are pledging to return the current budget to surplus in the next Parliament.

That seems straightforward. Problem is is, when politicians and commentators talk about the deficit, they are not actually talking about the budget deficit.

BorrowingBorrowing is... well, borrowing. Strictly speaking, borrowing and deficit (current budget) are not the same thing.

The two are linked, of course, as one covers the other, but the government doesn't just borrow money to pay back the deficit. It also borrows to invest.

The current budget covers everyday expenses - welfare payments, departmental costs etc. But the government also makes big investments, such as infrastructure projects, that are not included.

If the government is running a deficit, it may make investments on top of this, and will therefore need to borrow to cover both.

For example, in the calendar year 2007, the Labour government borrowed £37.7bn, of which £28.3bn was invested in big projects (the balance of £9.4bn represents the current budget deficit). Conversely, in 2013, the Conservative-led coalition borrowed £91.5bn, with just £23.7bn invested.

A neat, if rather simplistic, illustration of the different philosophies of the right and left in UK politics, some might say.

In the case of a surplus, the government may still need to borrow to cover its investments. This is why a current budget surplus does not automatically lead to a fall in overall debt, as borrowing to invest might be greater than the surplus. Equally, if government assets grow by more than the current budget deficit, then the deficit would not lead to an increase in overall debt.

Anyway, the important thing to remember is that, although there is a difference between the current budget deficit (or surplus) and government borrowing, for simplicity's sake commentators will usually quote borrowing figures when talking about the deficit. And you can see why, as they cover big infrastructure investment as well as everyday spending. After all, it is all borrowed money that needs to be paid back, and that adds to the overall pile of debt.

Cicero Said: Know Who Your Real Enemies Are

Marcus Tullius Cicero, advocate, reformer, philosopher, orator.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly."

- Marcus Tullius Cicero, 106-43BC

Now who do we think he might have been talking about? The people who go around wringing their hands and telling us we must be 'nice' to those who want to take what we have made great, destroy what we have made for our comfort and prosperity and kill us. Such people are ignorant of the fact that it was not being 'nice' that got our species of weak, slow running, poor tree climbing, and sadly lacking natural weapons hairless apes to the top of the food chain.

Baltic Dry Index Hits All Time Low - DON'T PANIC!

The Baltic What?

The Baltic Exchange Building - London

Most of the financial newspapers, tip sheets and web sites featured this story today (10 Nov, 2015). What is The Baltic Dry Index and why should it concern us ordinary punters?" you might well ask.

Most of the financial data reported in mainstream news is bollocks. GDP only measures the amount of money churning around an economy, while the CPI (Consumer Prices Index is constantly manipulated by swapping in and out the goods or services it looks at.

DEFINITION (from official Baltic Exchange website):
"The 'Baltic Dry Index' or BDI is a shipping and trade index created by the London-based Baltic Exchange that measures changes in the cost to transport raw materials such as metals, grains and fossil fuels by sea. The Baltic Exchange directly contacts shipping brokers to assess price levels for a given route, product to transport and time to delivery (speed).

'Baltic Dry' to use the finance industry's favourite contraction, is a composite of three sub-indexes that measure different sizes of dry bulk carrier ships - Capesize, Supramax and Panamax. Multiple geographic routes are evaluated for each index to give depth to the index's composite measurement."

'Baltic Dry' is also known sometimes referred to as the "Dry Bulk Index".

History

Cities of The Hanseatic League

The Baltic Exchange of London ((official site) was formally incorporated in 1744 in London at a time when was trade was expanding rapidly and there was a growing need for regulation. The name suggests the Baltic Exchange evolved from a system of brokerage dating back to the medieval Hanseatic League. Although the league was formed of German and Baltic city states in the thirteenth century and continued until the rise of nations states three or four centuries later, London was never a part of it. The Port Of London did however have very close links with the Hanseatic Ports and the merchants of Amsterdam, Hamburg, Bremen, Danzig, Tallin and Riga has agents in London to arrange passage of goods.

The history of London's financial centre, known as 'The City' because for many centuries up to the 1980s it was mostly contained within the boundaries of the old Roman walled city, Londinium, offers a fascinating insight into how the global economy developed and also to how this cold, wet island we Anglo Saxons and Celtic Scandinavians call home came to be the dominant world economic power between the seventeenth and early twentieth centuries. The banking system we are all familiar with, for example, was created by Nathan Meyer Rothschild after he moved his goldsmith business from Amsterdam to London and invented Magic Money, the stuff bankers produce out of a magicians hat.

The modern Baltic Dry is high - tech of course and deals are made by electronic communications rather than agents on the ground recording transactions in ink made from water, gum arabic and soot, with quill pens on vellum. It is still however one of the most useful measures of trade and thus of the real health of the global economy. If merchants, or corporate conglomerates are not moving much stuff, it means they are not buying and selling much stuff. Which is the reality we must place against all those optimistic GDP forecasts, and job figures which show record numbers of people holding jobs but do not tell us how many of those jobs are really half jobs (part time) or in the case of a young woman I know who after a spell of unemployment was offered a job that provided one hour paid world a day, one seventh of a job but for the government bean counters enough to mover her from unemployed to employed in the statistics.

The Baltic Exchange publishes the Baltic Dry Index (sic), which provides up to date pricing information for the cost of shipping of categories of cargo along different trade routes. The index is also used by economists and investment analysts to calculate from the demand for shipping versus shipping capacity, the level of activity in world trade, rather than those produced by people who create wealth with mathematical models of the economy..

What The latest News Means

Forward to the past - a scene in Gamla Stan, the commercial centre of Hanseatic Stockholm

At this time of year analysts expect the index to be high, demand picking up in late summer as businesses build their inventory against seasonal demand, and mid November is about the latest time to get cargoes from the far east or South America to Europe in time for the peak season for retail. Reliable measures of global economic activity usually rise from mid-summer to Thanksgiving. This year Baltic Dry has not risen, in fact from a serious low in summer, it has sunk even further.

The reason is that as the global economic engines slow and the economic reality masked by over valued global stock markets, with record levels driven by automated algorithm trading by machines programmed to follow the market trend suggests a massive deflationary wave is on the way. We should remind ourselves every time some grinning news frontman or woman enthusiastically tells us Stock Markets in New York or London have set a new record high, the indexes they refer to are only looking at a very small bundle of shares in successful companies. The FTSE (pronounced footsie) 100 is the Financial Times 100 Share Index, covering 100 of the best performing companies traded in London. The Dow Jones Industrial is similar.

At yesterday's level of 631, Baltic Dry Freight Index was at its lowest level (inflation adjusted) in history for this particular time of year. It is also within a whisker of an all-time low.

What does this mean? The only way to interpret this downward movement in the Baltic Dry is that there is more cargo capacity available from shipping companies that there are cargoes available to make the business of moving goods across the world an economically viable proposition. In other words, far from the leading economies booming( e.g. the UK and USA where economic forecasts have gone from positive to euphoric this year as far as Joe Ordinary is concerned it feels as if we are still in recession. In fact this new slowdown on top of the ongoing depression is a far greater threat to peace and stability than ISIS.

This will not really mean much to you and me, (assuming you are not a banker or financial trader) but it does mean the only practical solution to saving the environment is being imposed on us by circumstances (I'm not a Carbon Dioxide scaremonger, there are many things damaging the environment: population growth; deforestation; dumping toxic substances in the seas and rivers or in wilderness areas and most of all our throw away culture), by cutting back on what we consume we all contribute to relieving the pressure on the ecosphere.

Hypocritical Obama says US Foreign Policy Is Not about ‘occupying countries’ & ‘firing missiles’ Umm ....

by Xavier Connolly

And of course ordering a 747 to fly him and his wife from Washington to New York for a 'date' then lecturing us ordinary punters on the evils of burning fossil fuel (image source)

Some say Barack hussein Obama is the most evil human being ever. Not being religious I don't go in for evil, Satan, Asmodius and all that, but if we are talking about the most despicably hypocritical human being ever, Brack Obama has to be a contender. The man is so full of shit a torrent of the stuff pours out every time he opens his mouth. Take this shitstream from the warmonger in chief for example:

"America’s world supremacy is not about the number of occupied countries and fired missiles, believes the US president. Its international strength relies on diplomacy, protection of human rights and cooperation with other nations.

"The measure of strength internationally is not simply by how many countries we’re occupying, or how many missiles we’re firing, but the strength of our diplomacy and the strength of our commitment to human rights and our belief that we’ve got to cooperate with other countries together to solve massive problems like terrorism, but also like climate change,” the Washington Examiner cited Barack Obama as saying on Wednesday while addressing a 350-person fundraiser in Potomac, Maryland."

Obama made the statement on the seventh anniversary of his first-term presidential election, answering Republican critics that label his external policy as toothless. The case is of course that Obama has involved the USA in more wars and external conflicts that any other president (even that peace loving Democrat Bill Clinton), that his foreign policy has become a subject of ridicule is due to the incompetence of his administration in managing those interventions.

As recently as February 2015, the president publicly acknowledged that US foreign policy relied on military strength and economic leverage to achieve its aims. He said at that huncture that "American leadership" sometimes involves "twisting the arms” of nations which “don’t do what we need them to do."

"We occasionally have to twist the arms of countries that wouldn’t do what we need them to do if it weren’t for the various economic or diplomatic or, in some cases, military leverage that we exercised — if we didn’t have that dose of realism, we wouldn’t get anything done, either," President Obama said in an interview with Vox.

In May 2015 Obama gave a speech at West Point Military Academy’s graduation ceremony in which he said “America must always lead on the world stage.

"If we don’t, no one else will. The military that you have joined is, and always will be, the backbone of that leadership," Obama said.

He stressed that the US military potential remains at the core of America’s ability to influence changes abroad, therefore the Pentagon reserves the power to launch unilateral attacks when US interests are directly threatened.

So having stated so plainly and recently that Washington foreign policy relies on bullying, why is he backing off from that position now. Maybe it is because, having been exposed by Vladimir Putin over the Syria situation as a leader who lacks the testicular fortitude to back up his threats, Obama is trying to save face by reclaiming his peacemaker and joybringer, Obamessiah image.

Unfortunately that is not going to get him very far with the USA's standing in world politics at an all time low.

Group of Teenage North Africans Sentenced for Gang Rape Carried Out In Central Stockholm

German and Swedish women are waking up to the dangers of uncontrolled immigration and the realities of Islamic attitudes to female freedom (picture source: barenakedislam)

A group of teenager immigrants from north Africa, living in Stockholm as refugees, have been found guilty of the horrific gang rape of a 23-year-old Swedish woman on the Södermalm island, a fashionable residential area in the Stockholm archpelago.

The attack took place two months ago (late August), but was almost unreported by mainstream media, so commonplace have such outrages become in Sweden where the politically correct idiots in government have operated an 'open doors' immigration policy that has earned their country the unenviable title of 'rape capital of Europe.'. Stockholm District Court heard that the woman had been sitting crying when two of the teenage boys came and offered her a beer and comforted her.

From the witness stand she said she had declined the alcohol but ended up sitting with the teenagers at a nearby viewpoint looking over the city. At first the atmosphere was calm and she even phoned a friend. But then one of the men gripped her neck, ripped her clothes off and raped her.

The woman said that several other boys then arrived and she was raped many more times, by at least four different people.

She managed to get away at around 3am and board a night bus in the area, she told the court.

On Thursday the court sentenced two of the thugs, who are all aged between 15 and 18 years old, to six months in a juvenile detention centre and another to nine months. A third boy who was arrested was not brought to trial, Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet reported.

The teenagers are reported to be from north Africa and had been living in a refugee camp in Stockholm.

After the verdict, the rape victim told Aftonbladet she thought it was “sick” that the young men had been given such short sentences but said she was “glad that they were all convicted”.

While her physical wounds have healed, she said: “mentally I feel bloody awful”.

Södermalm is one of Stockholm’s most heavily populated islands, situated south of the city’s Old Town. Previously an industrial area with a reputation for violence, it has transformed into a trendy neighbourhood in recent decades, popular with professionals and business people.

Muslim Rape Gang Victim Talks: Girls Still Targeted Because Police Refuse to Act

Muslim men who groomed and violently abused young girls in a quiet English town have been left to carry on raping girls, despite being named to the police, one of their victims has revealed in an interview. Kaitlyn (not her real name) suffered years of abuse at the hands of hundreds of men in her home town, and in locations across the UK. Yet despite handing a list of more than 80 names to the police for investigation, her attackers are still working as taxi drivers, businessmen, and even on the local council.

Swedish Commentator: Migrants Enforcing Sharia Law, Bill Clinton ‘Evil’ For Wishing Same On U.S.

Swedish writer and news commentator Ingrid Kristina Carlqvist, speaking on an internet radio station, said that Islamists and migrants "have already succeeded in introducing Sharia law to Sweden". Speaking to Breitbart London Editor-in-Chief Raheem Kassam, she explained that, because Swedish girls are becoming afraid to go to certain places where there have been rapes and attacks, key tenets of Islamic law are effectively being enforced.

Sweden’s Mollycoddling of Rapists Blamed for Surge of Sex Attacks

Once know, as one of the safest and most orderly countries in the world, in recent years, thanks to an idiotic 'open doors' immigration policy, Sweden has now earned the unenviable title of 'rape capital of Europe.' The politically correct elite's view that they were being good 'global citizens' by allowing unvetted, undocumented, uneducated migrants to flood into their peaceful and pleasant land from many of the most violent, mysogynistic, racist, and sectarian trouble spots in the world, where western values are despised ...

Immigrant criminals and Swedish criminals are viewed differently in the eyes of Swedish law.
We ask why it is, in Sweden, that when a Swede kills two immigrants it is an act of terrorism that shames the nation, but when an African immigrant kills a Swedish mother and her young child, in the eyes of the government it is somehow the victim's fault? The big concern is that, given the desperation of our Conservtive and Labour party leaders to make us more European, such politically correct insanity will be inflicted in Britain next

European Leaders Welcome Period Of Calm In Ukraine

Ukraine Civil War (Image source)

The civil conflict in Ukraine has been pushed aside due to the seriousness of events in Syria and Iraq, but that's the way it goes with international news. Ukraine's problems are still as serious as ever even if they have not been at the op of news bulletins or grabbing newspaper headlines for a while. It would be great to report that the Kiev Government and pro - Russia separatists in the Donbass region had reached and agreement and the country was getting back to normal but that is not so.

European leaders however, eager as only politicians can be to aggrandize themselves, were quick to hail progress in halting the bloodshed in eastern Ukraine after talks in Berlin last Friday. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who hosted the meeting top foreign affairs officers from Ukraine, Russia and France, told reporters the two hours of discussions had focused on "how to further shore up the ceasefire" agreed in September between Kiev and pro-Russian forces.

"No one denied the difficulties and the obstacles to a political solution," he said.

"My impression here was that the participants are working to overcome these obstacles."

Steinmeier said the big sticking point was withdrawal of heavy weapons, including tanks, artillery and mortars, a goal he said he hoped will be reached by early December.

The chief monitor for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Ertugrul Apakan, said this week the ceasefire was "largely holding" but that the situation remains "volatile". A broader peace deal brokered by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and France's President Francois Hollande in February, The Minsk Accord, calls for the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the front line and calls for a vote in independence to be held in the separatist regions under international auspices.

The referendum have now been pushed back to early 2016.

For Russia, Sergei Lavrov admitted that "the implementation of Minsk will be delayed until next year" but told Russian reporters that he "truly hopes that a (military) escalation can be halted".

We note that the politicians do not acknowledge that fears the worsening situation in syria and Turkey and the EU's migrat crisis might spill over into Ukraine might have exercised a restraining influence on the parties involved in the conflict.
