Pollution of our environment by industrial activity has been recognised as a growing problem since the 1950s. For years the political and business establishments aided and abetted by mainstream media have been diverting public public attention from the stuff  that is really messing up the world we live in by demonising Carbon Dioxide, a trace atmospheric gas made up of one Carbon atom bonded to two Oxygen atoms, that far from being a pollutant is actually essential to the continuation of life on this planet (if you're wondering why, all life forms, bacteria, insects, worms, vegetation of all kinds, fish, birds, mammals (including us,) are carbon based life forms. Think it through.

The problem for Carbon Dioxide is that it is released by the processes involved in many of the dirtiest, smelliest, noisiest industrial and agricultural activities. This makes it an easy target for the green loons of the environment lobby and not-very-bright denizens of our great universities to blame for pollution problems when they have been paid by global corporations to shift blame from the real culprits, one of which is plastics.

 It's easy to understand why the corporate Godfathers want to protect the plastics industry, the world is burying itself in plastic, mostly single use plastic packaging. The stuff is everywhere, it is even, as you read, insinuating itself in the form of micro-particles into your vital organs. And as it decomposes it releases the toxic shite it is made from. But as everybody knows, toxic shite is the stuff money is made from.

Consumers rightly want something to be done about plastic pollution. Recycling is something, we're told by the politicians, establishment types, media mendicants and corporate Godfathers. Therefore oil companies, manufacturers and retailers are doing it. The trouble is there are many types of plastic, quite a lot of which are either impossible or very difficult to recycle.

This inconvenient fact does not trouble the not-very-bright denizens of our great universities, they have no interest in things like cost - benefit analysis because their revenue stream comes from research grant phishing, thus many of these initiatives are ill conceived and counter productive, some fall way short of their intended purpose, some would cost $£€100 times more than they would save and others actively cause more environmental damage than they are preventing. 

For example, in 2021, the UK supermarket chain Tesco set up bins in its stores in which customers could leave their difficult-to-recycle “soft plastics”, like the low density polyethylene from shopping bags and film lids. At the time the company boldly forecast it would “collect more than 1,000 tonnes a year” and planned to “recycle as much of this material as possible back into products and packaging sold in Tesco stores”.

However, according to a recent investigation by the Environment Agency and the pressure group Everyday Plastic, the vast majority of this waste ended up being incinerated rather than being recycled. ClientEarth, a non-government organisation that specialises in environmental law, says the results of the investigation shows this and othee supermarket soft plastic take-back schemes are misleading customers.

The problem appears to be widespread and certainly not limited to soft plastics. According to Greenpeace and Everyday Plastic, 58 per cent of all plastic waste in the UK is incinerated, 14 per cent is exported to other countries and 11 per cent is sent to landfill. Just 17 per cent is actually recycled.

Another initiative to encourage consumers to sent plastic waste for recycling, The Big Plastic Count was run across a week in May and its results show that the average household threw away 66 pieces of plastic per week. Based on those figures the organisers, Greenpeace and Everyday Plastic, estimate that the UK throws out nearly 100 billion pieces of plastic a year.

The survey involved nearly 100,000 households each recording the type and amount of plastic they dispose of for seven days. Organisers say the results prove that recycling alone is not a solution for reducing how much plastic ends up either as landfill or being burned..

"This is a jaw-dropping amount of plastic waste," Greenpeace UK's plastics campaigner Chris Thorne said. "Pretending we can sort this with recycling is just industry green-wash. We're creating a hundred billion bits of waste plastic a year, and recycling is hardly making a dent."

These statistics might surprise the gullible, Greta -worshipping green loons but they will not shock anybody who knows anything about either plastic or recycling.

The UK government publishes data, external about the amount of plastic waste being collected from households and the latest statistics (2021) show that more than 2.5 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste was created. The paltry amount actually recycled is shown above.

"We are going further to tackle single use plastics through our landmark Environment Act," a spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural affairs said. They highlighted measures that had already been taken to restrict the supply of plastic straws and cotton buds and said proposals were being finalising for a deposit return scheme for plastic bottles.

The vast majority of plastic that people use, and in many cases put into their blue recycling bins, is headed to landfills, or worse, according to a report from Greenpeace on the state of plastic recycling in the U.S.A. so in spite of the virtue signalling they are no better at recycling than we Europeans.

The Greenpeace report cites separate data published in May this year which revealed that the amount of plastic actually turned into new things (presumably the old coke bottles into fleece jackets thing,) has fallen to new lows of around 5%. I guess everybody who wanted a fleece jacket has one now.)That number is expected to drop even further as more plastic is being produced every year.

Greenpeace found that no plastic — not even soda bottles, one of the most prolific items thrown into recycling bins — meets the threshold to be called "recyclable" according to standards set by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation New Plastic Economy Initiative. Plastic must have a recycling rate of 30% to reach that standard; no plastic has ever been recycled and reused close to that rate.

"More plastic is being produced, and an even smaller percentage of it is being recycled," Lisa Ramsden, senior plastic campaigner for Greenpeace U.S.A. observed. "The crisis just gets worse and worse, and without drastic change will continue to worsen as the industry plans to triple plastic production by 2050."

Waste management experts say the problem with plastic is that it is expensive to collect and sort. There are now thousands of different types of plastic, and none of them can be melted down together. Persuading consumers to sort their plastic waste is impossible as training is needed to be able to differentiate the various kinds and paying people to sort it would only add a further cost to an already unviable business model.

Plastic also degrades after one or two uses. Greenpeace found the more plastic is reused the more toxic it becomes. What did we old 'conspiracy theorists tell you up at the top of the article?

New plastic, on the other hand, is cheap and easy to produce. The result is that plastic trash has few markets — a reality the green lobby has not wanted to hear and does not want the public to hear.

The problem with reducing plastic pollution now is the need to re-educate individuals that a great deal of the material they have been told is sent for recycling into useful stuff is ending up in a landfill, or an incinerator. A Greenpeace official said. "It's not going to a recycling facility and being recycled. It's going to a recycling facility and being landfilled somewhere else because industry can't do anything with that material."

That message has been difficult for the public to absorb with so many different bins in public spaces, and their own communities telling them to put their plastic in recycling containers.

Is Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Really A Pollutant Or Are The Green Blob Scamming Us all

This blog has always positioned itself firmly on the side of the sceptics in the Climate Change debate, and with good reason. While the climate catastrophe scaremongers demonise Carbon Dioxide (CO2) as a deadly pollutant which, when emitted from carbon rich sources, e.g coal, natural gas, oil burned during human activities, poses an existential threat to life on earth.

Now we three Boggart Bloggers, who get this blog together with help from a few friends and occasional input from other alt_news contributors, might be a bit long in the tooth but unlike some senior US politicians, age has not roBbed us of our wits or our memory. And we all remember learning during lessons on the natural sciences in school all those decades ago that Carbon Dioxide, though it only occurs in very small concentrations in the air we breathe, is essential to life. In fact our teachers explained that plants, fish, birds, reptiles and mammals (a categorisation which includes us humans,) are carbon based life forms. 

So when people who have fallen for the climate scam tell you Carbon Dioxide IS DESTROYING THE PLANET just remind them we are made from Carbon FFS.  Almost everything we eat and is or has at some time been a carbon - based life form and most of what we drink owes at least part of its flavour to carbon - based life forms (water being the exception.) What is more, in a process known as photosynthesis, during the daylight hours carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is turned into green stuff like grass and leaves. CO2 is the staple food of vegetation.

We mention this because a new study which will almost certainly be ignored by mainstream media, has been published in the journal Global Ecology and Conservation, which claims that a phenomenon known as CO2 fertilization is contributing to increased greening of the globe.  

The authors of the study, which bears the title “The global greening continues despite increased drought stress since 2000”, (hey, they're scientists - don't expect catchy headlines,) used the measurement of Leaf Area Index (LAI) to shows that more than half of the land area on earth is greening at an accelerated rate since 2000.

They also point out that “numerous studies have confirmed the greening phenomenon, investigated the drivers and corresponding influences”, an observation which challenges mainstream studies based on evidence obtained from mathematical models, which claim that increased carbon dioxide is causing decreses in the densitiy of vegetation. All of the scaremongering reports on climate change which predict imminent disaster have relied on mathematical modelling rather than data obtained from real world sources.

Using leaf area index datasets that had been “significantly updated”, the research team analyzed the global vegetation change trends from 2001 to 2020 based on the latest version of LAI datasets.

“Importantly, we also introduced the concept of LAI growth rate to analyze the rate of greening (browning). Finally, we further analyzed the drivers of LAI trend and LAI growth rate trend,” they said.

They conclude that “global greening is an indisputable fact” and “the rate of global greening increased slightly” between 2001 and 2020.

The study also looked at “global browning” –  vegetation dying off due to notionally increased temperatures, which is usually attributed to climate change – and found that the drought trend “only slowed down global greening, but was far from triggering browning”.

Comparing their work to other studies that looked at studies that found global greening the authors noted that inreased greening due to elevated CO2 presence in the atmosphere “could reduce climate warming by increasing terrestrial carbon sequestration and cooling the surface”.

“Greening acceleration occurred in 55.15% of the globe (positive trend and positive growth rate trend), while browning acceleration occurred in only 7.28% (negative trend and positive growth rate trend),” the study found.

The findings suggest that increased CO2 has been a net gain for the environment, which would stand contrary to the claim that CO2 endangers public health; a claim that was made by Environmental Protection Agency president Lisa Jackson in 2009. More recently, legislation in the U.S. has described CO2 as a pollutant. It is no coincidence that the billionaire psychopaths of Silicon Valley are all heavily invested in favour of medieval technologies like windmills. As far as they are concerned of course, We The People do not deserve things like electricity.

It begs an interesting question: is CO2 really a pollutant at the wannabe world government wallahs say, or could higher atmospheric concentrations of it actually turn out to be a positive thing?

Scientists says Nuclear Is The Way Forward For Clean Energy - Do Ursidae Defecate In Sylvan Landscapes?

Scientists, politicians and media have been screeching, for the past 30 or so years, about the need to transition away from carbon based fossil fuels, (coal, gas and oil,) as a matter or urgency or risk destroying the life supporting ecology of our planet by overloading the system with Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emitted from human activity. Unfortunately scientists are not as smart as they think they are, politicians are not smart but know how to manipulate people into thinking they are, and the media will write or say anything that will earn a Euro a Yuan a buck or a pound.

But so long as politicians think supporting decarbonisation will earn them votes and scientists believe producing scare stories about catastrophic climate change being an existential threat to humanity will save them from the thing they fear most, (having to get proper jobs and get some effing work done,) there are a few major obstacles between civilised communities and the goal to transition to a net zero-carbon economy. In spite of advances in renewable energy technology so called 'clean energy', this CO2 free electricity is mainly produced from intermittent and unreliable sources. Thus  the gas and coal fired plants must be kept running as backup for when the wind does not blow and the sun doesn't shine.

Additionally the inability of 'sustainables'  to sustain supply twenty four hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days a year, and the incredible economic growth of emerging economies such as China, India, Pakistan, Brazil and Nigeria and demand for energy is growing at a rate the producers are finging had to keep pace with. After 30 years of eco - activists' wailing and gnashing of teeth over the polluting effect of CO2, a trace atmospheric gas that is essential to the survival of carbon based life forms (i.e. every living thing,) and demands that CO2 emissions be radically reduced, globally more fossil fuels than ever, are being consumed and our rate of CO2 production is in fact increasing, not heading to zero.

But there’s a well established, totally reliable, environmentally friendly solution with over sixty years history in energy production, nuclear energy, still waiting for its moment to become the primary source for domestic and industrial electricity is CO2 free and ticks most of the other boxes.Good grief, next they'll be informing us, in their lofty and condescending way that yes, bears do actually shit in the woods. Sadly nuclear technology is still being held back by prejudices based on decades of environmentalist propaganda but throughout the decades of scaremongering about peak oil, acid rain, and climate change the answer to our energy problems has been staring policy makers in the face.

Having worked in the UK nuclear industry for five years (not as a physicist or engineer but a humble Informations Systems and Networks Consultant,) thus able to talk to highly knowledgable people and read publications not available to the general public, I can support the expansion of nuclear energy as an environmentally friendly solution to address both the world’s energy problems and, perhaps counterintuitively, as a catalyst for peace and unity. If CO2 is the enemy as those who insist "The Science Is Settled" would have us believe, then unclear is at least as environment friendly as wind turbines or solar panels and infintely more reliable.

Additionally nuclear energy has the ability to be scaled at an industrial level, globally: Uranium 235 has millions more times energy than coal or oil. In order to provide the equivalent power to a single, 1 Gigawatt nuclear plant, an estimated 9,100,000 2 Megawatt wind turbines (yes, that's nine million,) would have to be built, covering an area of around 350 square miles. Peak UK demand is approximately 30 Gigawatts. And the great myth of  this environmentally friendly energy source, its dirty secret, is that in reality it is far from CO2 free, it simply moves the emissions away from the generating plant itself to the places where the materials are mined, the cement for the enormous concrete beds the giant turbine towers neeed is produced and the equipment is manufactured.

Nuclear energy became unpopular in   the 1950s due to the association with nuclear weapons and perceived risks of imminent buclear conflict stoked up by cold war rhetoric. But its actual safety record in electricity generation shows it is one of the safest sources of energy, We must get over our cognitive and political bias: Nuclear energy is necessary and safe, and not the same as nuclear weapons.It is essential to expand the development of nuclear energy not only to meet satisfy the scaremongers and meet their often unrealistc demands on the carbon-free energy transition, but because nuclear energy is indeed environmentally friendly, and necessary.

I believe the so called 'fossil fuels' (a misnomer BTW,) will be with us and our descendents for centuries to come, generating electricity, fuelling vehicles providing heat for homes, commercial and industrial premises are not their only uses. How would we survive without plastics for example.

The country of “Atomkraft? Nein danke” turns Net Zero into ‘Not Close To Net Zero’

On Saturday Germany extinguished its last three remaining nuclear power stations, in a delayed move which started 12 years ago after a policy decision by Angela Merkel. Originally numbering 17, there are now ‘net zero’ nuclear power stations in Germany, but the German coal-fired power plants are being fired up to take up the strain.

At a time when Germany has been in the midst of an energy crisis principally caused by its government’s decisions to rely on President Putin for its energy supplies, (Oh how the Germans laughed when Trump told them they would rue the day) Germany has decoupled its last three remaining nuclear power stations from the electricity grid. Somewhat astonishingly it has been re-commissioning its mothballed coal-fired power stations instead.

What’s the point of expensive UK Net Zero policies when Germany increases its CO2?

In a country where the Greens have been powerful for years — and are now one of the three coalition partners in Olaf Scholz’s government — I question the coherence of Germany’s energy decisions.

I also present evidence of how Germany has been blowing smoke rings across the EU and across Europe as a whole — and how this is set to increase.

Germany was already one of the EU’s worst polluters — now it looks set to get worse

When it comes to the worst polluters in the EU, Germany is right up there. Now, thanks to the decisions of the German government, it will pollute the planet even more.

25 years ago Germany was generating almost 30% of its electricity from nuclear power. By 2013, thanks to Angela Merkel, this had almost halved to 15.4%. Now it’s ‘net zero’.

The problem for Germany — an intensive user of energy — is that it must keep its vast industries powered up, and renewables simply will not do that. This is why the German government is now firing up its mothballed coal-fired power stations as I reported months ago) in order to keep its industries going and to keep its people from freezing to death in the sometimes very cold German winters. Oh, how they sniggered at Trump when he warned them about relying on Russian energy, they ait sniggering now are they?

German business is worried and the government is divided

On Saturday Peter Adrian, President of Germany’s DIHK (Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce), told the Rheinische Post

“Despite lower gas prices, energy costs for most businesses in Germany remain high. At the same time, we’re still not out of the woods yet as regards security of supply.”

Germany’s tripartite coalition is not in complete agreement over this policy, with the head of the Free Democratic Party, Christian Lindner “regretting the shutdown”.

Yesterday in Bavaria in southern Germany Premier Markus Söder of the centre-right CSU even demanded his state should be allowed to take control of the Isar 2 nuclear power plant which lies around 50 miles north of Munich. This is one of the three which was permanently taken off the grid the previous night.

“Bavaria is, therefore, demanding that the federal government give states the responsibility for the continued operation of nuclear power. Until the [energy] crisis ends and while the transition to renewables has not succeeded, we must use every form of energy until the end of the decade. Bavaria is ready to face up to this responsibility.

“We are a pioneer in nuclear fusion research and are examining the construction of our own research reactor, in cooperation with other countries. It can’t be that a country of engineers like Germany gives up any claim to shaping the future and international competitiveness.”

Opposition to the nuclear shutdown has taken many forms. It was only in January that the people of the entire village of Lützerath were forcibly evicted and their properties razed to the ground, to make way for an open-cast coal mine. The coal there is lignite, considered to be the worst kind environmentally. Thousands were demonstrated but to no avail.

German people have more in common with the British than you might think

Interestingly, the ordinary German people are expressing contrary views to their government, in the same way, that has happened in the UK on many key issues. Here are the results of the latest polling I found in a German newspaper at the weekend. The Forsa survey was conducted for one of Germany’s most-watched TV stations, RTL.

• Only 28% of Germans favoured switching off the remaining nuclear power stations
• Two-thirds favour extending the lifespan of nuclear reactors or connecting old plants back to the grid

Despite the views of the people, the coalition government of Olaf Scholz went ahead with the decommissioning anyway. Meanwhile, nearly 20 coal-fired power stations have been put back into service in the last year. These are amongst the 151 which I have previously reported on, which are being considered for re-commissioning.

The lies and hypocrisy over ‘Net Zero’ in the EU recently have even surprised ME — and believe me, I am used to it.

I would like to remind readers that Ursula von der Leyen’s Commission’s TOP priority is her ‘Green Deal’. Hundreds of billions have been thrown at this and there is barely an EU press statement on any subject which doesn’t try to tie some policy or other to green issues.

And yet here we have Germany, the largest economy in the EU (by far), with massive industries and the largest population of any EU country, switching off the last of its perfectly functioning nuclear power stations.

Are wind and solar power expected to take up the slack? No. Instead, Germany is powering up its mothballed coal-fired power stations and even creating new open-cast coal mines. And yet the Greens are one of the three parties in power in Germany and they’re all for this? It almost beggars belief.

The big question for British readers is why on earth we should be expected to make enormous sacrifices, stop buying cars we love, stop being able to drive them in metropolitan areas, pay for very expensive ‘heat pumps’, continue to subsidise ‘green energy’ projects on a massive scale, while Germany’s CO2 emissions are going to continue to soar across the continent?

Thousands of Dutch farms will be forced out of business to meet new EU 'Nitrogen pollution targets

The globalist technocrats who control The European Union (EU) have enacted new environmental protection laws which will force member states, including The Netherlands, one of the worlds most important exporters of foodstuffs in spite of its small size geographically. To meet the new targets for reducing emissions, which address nitrogen emissions from human activity rather than Carbon Dioxide, the Netherlands government proposes to  shut down a large portion of its farming industry in order to comply with emissions targets predicated upon the the predicted catastrophe known as “climate change.”

Nitrogen emissions have not previously been addressed by the climate activist lobby but with more and more scientists questioning the actual extent to which Carbon Dioxide is reported to affect global mean temperature it seems a 'Plan B' is needed.

Some 3,000 farms lying in areas designated as “environmentally sensitive” in The Netherlands are now scheduled for seizure and closure, according to mainstream media reports a huge increase on the 600 farms that we reported were expected to close back in October due to the 'need' to reduce nitrogen “pollution.”

Following a summer of farmer protests that saw slow moving tractors blockade Dutch trunk roads and cause gridlock in cities as a show of opposition to the EU’s “green” agenda, the Dutch government is still moving forward with plans to cut nitrogen emissions in the country by at least 50 percent by the year 2030. One can only envisage the level of civil unrest growing, the Dutch are fed up with the EU and with their minority government which remains in office only because the anti democracy EU refuses to accept certain Eurosceptic political parties as partners in a ruling coalition. This situation is currently repeated in Germany, Belgium, Spain and Greece and prevailed in Italy and Sweden until recent elections installed populist coalitions in power.

Natherland's Nitrogen Minister (yes, they have appointed a Nitrogen minister,) Christianne van der Wal recently announced that the Dutch government will conduct a “compulsory purchase” of the country’s nitrogen-emitting farms. Farmers who own the land will reportedly be offered deals “well over” what their properties are actually worth. This loonytoons policy seems to be courting economic collapse as it can only reduce the trade of the country's most important exporting industry, cause a huge increase in unemployment and force The Netherlands to become  a net importer of food rather than enjoying the huge trade surplus it has now.

Van der Wal added in a statement that “there is no better offer coming” than the ones her government plans to offer. In other words, farmers can either accept the deal and get something, or reject it and possibly receive very little or nothing while losing their livelihoods. This is an almost perfect deinition of how fascist governments operates.

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for life but according to academics is now being produced in greater quantities than ever before. While marginally more nitrogen  (it makes up around 75% of the air we breathe,) in the atmosphere has allowed global food production to keep pace with growing human demands, it can (but has not been proved to,) also impair water and air quality, reduce plant species diversity and exacerbate global warming. All these  concerns have arisen on evidence from mathematical modelling of speculative changes in the atmosphere's chemical makeup. Questions about whether the biosphere is able to soak up this extra nitrogen and what that means for the future are not being answered on the basis of real world observation. However, recent research involving academics in the Oxford Martin School’s Biodiversity Institute has shown that despite an increase in nitrogen production through industrialization, nitrogen availability in many ecosystems has remained steady over the last 500 years.

A team of researchers have studied how the atmospheric nitrogen level changes when atmospheric carbon dioxide increases. To do this they modelled palaeoecological records of nitrogen availability from the end of the last glacial period – when carbon dioxide increased rapidly – to recent times, when carbon dioxide levels have risen through the burning of fossil fuels according to climate science orthodoxy. The team collected and analysed data from the sediment records of 86 lakes across six continents representing varied ecosystems. With this data, they were able to compare past and present nitrogen cycling in various regions.
