As The Market For Electric Cars Stutters, Global Sales Of Petrol (gasoline) Hit New Record

 As regular readers will know Boggart Blog (in all our four flavours) has always been sceptical of the narrative around the transition from Internal Combustion Engines to battery powered electric cars, which according to the hype produced zero polluting emissions, could travel forever on a single battery charge (OK, that's a slight exaggeration - well if you insist we admit its hyperbole but no more so than most of the claims made by politicians, scientists and the media for electric cars,) cost far less to run and were just better in every way. Yes even when the lithium battery spontaneously combusts, which they do more often than Spinal Tap drummers, they burned hotter and for longer than petroleum fuelled cars.

The problem is they don't do any of these things, except the last one about spontaneously combusting, which electric car advocates don't like to talk about but us sceptics are delighted to raise the point at every opportunity. Apart from that electric vehicles are not zero pollution, the electricity that drives them will continue for several decades at least, to be produced by burning fossil fuels, sustainable sources like wind and solar have shown they just can't hack it and net zero is an unrealistic pipe dream, nuclear faces the same hostility from the Green Blob as oil and gas and hydro triggers the 'Save The Two Toed Toad' brigade.

So with stories breaking almost every day of falling demand for EVs and holding depots overflowing with used ones because nobody wants to buy a second hand car and then have to stump up the same amount of money for a new battery pack, it was no surprise to learn that with two days to go (well a month actually, although it is 29 December, figure are only in to the end of November,) 2023 is on course to break the record for the highest Petrol and Diesel sales ever.

Record Global Gasoline Consumption Defies IEA Forecast (& EV Hype)

Global gasoline consumption hit a record 26.9 million barrels per day (bpd) this year, exceeding the 2019 peak and defying estimates that the last pre-pandemic year was the time when gasoline demand worldwide would peak. 

The data, reported by Bloomberg Opinion columnist Javier Blas, shows the latest figures from the International Energy Agency (IEA). The same agency, which has been strongly advocating for a faster energy transition for years, had predicted just this year that 2019 was the peak demand for gasoline globally.  

Back in June, in its Oil 2023 annual report, the IEA said that “Growth is set to reverse after 2023 for gasoline and after 2026 for transport fuels overall.” 

“Gasoline demand will be disproportionately impacted as EVs progressively replace vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE),” the IEA said, adding that:

“This means that the fuel is likely to exhibit the earliest and most pronounced peak in demand.”

And it also said that “Usage will never return to 2019 levels and the post- pandemic peak could come as early as 2023. Following a brief plateau, the decline is forecast to accelerate from 2026 onwards.” 

However, the IEA’s latest figures not only show that 2019 wasn’t the peak demand year for global gasoline consumption, but that demand in both 2023 and 2024 would surpass the pre-pandemic levels. ... Continue reading >>>

Google Applies For Patent On Anti - Free - Speech Software

 When the web was stil quite young and I was - well not as old as I am now, nerds naively believed that Google was the greatest search tool because Google would find 1 million results for their searches whereas tools like Yahoo, Alta Vista and Excite might only find around 100k. But were Google's results valid?

At that time the corporate motto was "Don't Be Evil," to which I, because I had been involved with internetworking technologies long before the World Wide Web came along, would comment that they only published  part of that motto, the full version being "Don't be evil, that's our job," because while Google proclaimed its support for concepts like 'free speech,' in fact its purpose was never to provide open access to all the information in the world but to restrict access to information The Powers That Be did not want t, I mean who is ever going to he public to access. 

At the time this was achieved by simply bumping sites spreading such info. way down the results list. Who is ever going to delve through even 1000 propaganda items to find a nugget of truth, let alone a million.

Now of course we freethinkers (officially known in government and corporate circles as 'conspiracy theorists,' are organised and have our own networks within the WWW where we can share the inconvenient truths that challenge and debunk official lies, it is not enough to subsume our websites deep under listings of thousands of propaganda items. So it ,has been rebranded as 'Misinfoemation' and we are even seeing attempt by governments to criminalise the publication for such content (basically anything political parties or their corporate paymasters and the billionaire psychopaths of Silicon Valley and Wall Street do not like.

Google’s New Patent: Using Machine Learning to Identify “Misinformation” on Social Media

Google has filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for a tool that would use machine learning (ML, a subset of AI) to detect what Google decides to consider as “misinformation” on social media.

Google already uses elements of AI in its algorithms, programmed to automate censorship on its massive platforms, and this document indicates one specific path the company intends to take going forward.

The patent’s general purpose is to identify information operations (IO) and then the system is supposed to “predict” if there is “misinformation” in there.

Judging by the explanation Google attached to the filing, it at first looks like blames its own existence for proliferation of “misinformation” – the text states that information operations campaigns are cheap and widely used because it is easy to make their messaging viral thanks to “amplification incentivized by social media platforms.”

But it seems that Google is developing the tool with other platforms in mind.

The tech giant specifically states that others (mentioning X, Facebook, and LinkedIn by name in the filing) could make the system train their own “different prediction models.”

Machine learning itself depends on algorithms being fed a large amount of data, and there are two types of it – “supervised” and “unsupervised,” where the latter works by providing an algorithm with huge datasets (such as images, or in this case, language), and asking it to “learn” to identify what it is it’s “looking” at. ... Because most new vehicles in Europe are sold via leases, automakers and dealers who finance these transactions are trying to recover losses from plummeting valuations by raising borrowing costs. That’s hitting demand in some European markets that were in the vanguard of the shift away from fossil fuel-powered propulsion. Some of the biggest buyers of new cars, including rental firms, are cutting back on EV adoption because they’re losing money on resales, with Sixt SE dropping Tesla models from its fleet.

The problems are expected to intensify next year, when many of the 1.2 million EVs sold in Europe in 2021 will come off their three-year leasing contracts and enter the secondhand market. How companies tackle this problem will be key for their bottom lines, consumer confidence and ultimately decarbonization — including the European Union’s plan to phase out sales of new fuel-burning cars by 2035.

“There isn’t used-car demand for EVs,” said Matt Harrison, Toyota Motor Corp.’s chief operating officer in Europe. “That’s really hurting the cost-of-ownership story.”

“One has to slash prices significantly just to get customers to look at EVs,” said Dirk Weddigen von Knapp, who heads a group representing VW and Audi dealers.

Turns Out, Alcohol is Good For Your Health!

Dry January was first invented 10 years ago by a U.K. charity called Alcohol Concern with a single purpose: “To reset after a month or two of holiday festivities (such as) office parties, fun nights out, and boozy nights in.”

Fair enough, perhaps, after an over-indulgent Christmas. But the goalposts have since been uprooted and replanted throughout the whole year. In February 2023, the charity (now rebranded as Alcohol Change) launched another abstinence drive: “Sober Spring – your three month break from alcohol, your chance to break habits, start new ones and experience life alcohol-free.” Hmm… What with the invention of two more monthly clones, Sober October and Sober September, there soon won’t be many more days in the year for drinkers to quaff a bevy or two without looking over their shoulders to see who’s eyeing them accusingly.

I’m a medical research journalist and I first got interested in this issue after stumbling across the fact that although booze “contains” lots of calories, it does not make you put on weight. Clinical trials  have demonstrated this surprising fact conclusively. The evidence is clear: if you replace food calories with alcohol calories, you will lose weight. And yet the medical authorities have repeatedly told us that drinking causes weight gain, one of many health reasons to give up drinking.

That mismatch between medical advice and medical evidence set me on the path of seeing what else ‘they’ were misleading us about. That led to a deep dive into the published medical research and my discovery that, although the health authorities were routinely bombarding us with anti-alcohol rhetoric, there are astonishing health benefits from drinking.

Experts Warn World Economic Forum’s Net Zero Goals Will Kill 4+ Billion People.

The WEF and its fellow unelected billionaire psychopath globalist leaders are pushing for governments around the world to rapidly phase out fossil fuels. Leading experts have spoken out against their plans and are warning the public that the WEF’s “Net Zero” goal to eliminate fossil fuels will result in the deaths of over four billion people or more.

The “Net Zero” target to end fossil fuel use is part of the WEF and UN’s “Agenda 2030” and “Agenda 2050” plans for humanity and involves dramatically reducing fossil reliance by 2030 and completely eliminating their use by 2050.

The WEF continues to push its agenda and has been calling for taxpayers worldwide to pay $3.5 trillion per year, which they insist is necessary to fund the noble global power in order to meet the globalist organisation’s “Net Zero” goal of “decarbonizing” the planet. 

However, critics argue that “decarbonization” is just a euphemism for the WEF’s anti-human agenda and experts are raising the alarm about what this will actually mean for civilization, which includes the death of over four billion people.

Starvation

Danish statistician Bjørn Lomborg is just one who has warned that ending fossil fuel use will lead to the deaths of around half of the world’s population through starvation alone.

“4 billion people are dependent on fossil fertilizer for food,” Lomborg notes. “Without, 4 billion will starve to death. “It is time to call out the astoundingly destructive & misanthropic campaigners,” he declared.

Total Defeat Of Ukraine By Russia Is Only A Matter Of Time

Financial Times columnist and founder member of the Vobblyvoddymyr Zelensky piano playing penis fan club, Gideon Rachman has a talent for stating the obvious which he displays in a recent article on the state of play in the Ukrainian conflict 'Ukraine and its backers need a credible path to victory - archived.  As the Financial Times is behind a paywall with no monthly allocation of free articles, below is a sommary of the most importyant section:

As Ukraine goes into the new year short of ammunition, money and diplomatic support, there is another important deficiency. The country and its western backers no longer have a convincing strategy for victory, if the ever truy did.

As 2023 the year of the Ukrainian counteroffensive's catatrophic failure, ends with Russia back in the ascendant, inflicting huge casualties on Ukraine's armed forces and gaining more territory fear are growing among Ukraine's erstwhile allies that  2024 will be the year that Russia overruns Ukraine and inflicts total defeat. The worst-case scenarios are that, if western aid is cut off, Ukraine could be in serious trouble by the summer.

Without a credible strategy and thus no apparent path to the promised victory, pressure on the Ukrainian regime to negotiate a settlement will continue to mount mount. The Ukrainians might make a deal even if it involved making territorial concessions  if they had any confidence that Russia would stick to it. But Ukrainian officials cite a litany of agreements that Putin has made and then broken. They believe that any cessation in the fighting would simply be used as an opportunity for Russia to rearm.

While most of the article is in line with what other mainstream media reports are concluding about Ukraine's likely fate, Rachman omits to list any agreements Russia is claimed to have broken. Does he mean the Minsk agreements brokered by former French President Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel which the Ukraine rejected to fulfill? Or is it the Russian–Ukrainian Friendship Treaty that Ukraine in 2019 refused to renew?

Unlike the U.S. and its allies in the proxy was with Russia, The Kremlin sticks to its treaties.

But up to a point Rachman is right. There is currently no 'theory of victory' (to use his phrase) for Ukraine. In fact there never was and the only surprise is that so many in the west fell for the narrative that Ukraine was winning and if only the NATO allies would grant the Ukrainians enough aid in high tech and low tech weapons, support thechnology, ammunition, money, food, medicines, aircraft and troops on the ground Washington's goals in sponsoring the war, regime change in Moscow and the break up of the Russian federation could be achieved. The truth was, Ukraine could never win. Even if NATO had been willing to provide as history shoes us, air support and troops on the ground any conventional war with Russia The question now is how badly will Ukraine lose and how much territory will it have to cede to end the pointless slaughter of its young (and now not so young and even elderly) men?

On the Russian side, President Vladimir Putin has said:

"There will be peace when we achieve our goals, which you have mentioned. Now let’s return to these goals – they have not changed. I would like to remind you how we formulated them: denazification, demilitarisation, and a neutral status for Ukraine."

It is the guaranteed neutrality that has been the sticking point. This blog, as we often remind readers, reported in mid - 2022 that as early as April of that year when Turkey's President Erdogan had arranged peace talks between the combatant nations and Russia was willing to make peace in return for Ukrainian neutrality and guarantees on the security of Ukraine's breakaway Russian speaking provinces it was the USA and UK that blocked any negotations insisting that Ukraine must not negotiate and deal without prior approval from the USA.

Russia has made some progress toward those aims but not all have yet been achieved, in particular the European Union and NATO are stupidly still making noises about admitting Ukraine to their ranks. 

As long as this kind of idiocy goes on, Russsia will continue the war until the Ukraine agrees to some kind of negotiations territorial concessions and neutrality. If it does not do so anytime soon Russia will continue the now one sided conflict until Ukraine is completely crushed and can no longer function as a nation.

The Ukrainian outlet Strana has analyzed how that might happen (in Russian, machine translation):

Only a few events can bring Ukraine to the brink of complete defeat:

1. Capture of Kiev.

2. Cutting off Ukraine from the sea - the capture of the entire Black Sea coast of the country and the withdrawal of Russian troops to the borders of Romania and Moldova. This will be a catastrophic blow to Ukraine both economically and militarily-strategically.

3. The capture of Dnipro and Zaporizhia – the largest rear, industrial and logistics hubs of the Ukrainian army, which will mean a critical threat to the entire Southern Front of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as most of the eastern one. ...

4. A strike from Belarus through the Zhytomyr and Vinnytsia regions with the aim of reaching Transdniestria from the north and maintaining control over this line.

[T]he apocalyptic scenarios described above for Ukraine can only be realized if at least one of the following events occurs (we leave out the options for using nuclear weapons or entering the war on the side of the Russian Federation of large third countries, as they can lead to a world war, where there will be completely different scenarios):

1. A catastrophic drop in discipline and morale in the Ukrainian army, when entire units begin to surrender or leave their positions without orders, exposing large sections of the front.

2. Internal destabilization in Ukraine, acute conflict within the military-political leadership, loss of control by the authorities over the processes in the country, the collapse of the army management.

3. Falling to a critically low level of both military and financial aid from the West.

4. A sharp (much faster than similar actions of Ukraine) increase in Russia's army size, quality and quantity of weapons used, which will radically change the balance of forces at the front.

At the moment, none of these situations are observed.

However, Russia is obviously actively working to make these points a reality.

And that about sums up the situation.

Aid to Ukraine has fallen off a cliff as nations refuse to bankrupt themselves funding an unwinnable war. New aid from the U.S. or E.U. is seriously in doubt. If either fails to agree to donate new $£€billions or send more tanks, guns, missiles and vehicles the other will too. Additional problems come from the west where Polish truckers, now joined by farmers, continue to block the border crossings with Ukraine. Shortages in ammunition have already led Ukraine to scaling down its current operations.

Russia has increased the size of its army but still has more troops in reserve than on active duty in the war zone. With the economy on a war footing it produces way more weapons and ammunition than the Western allies combines can deliver to Ukraine.

Should Russia win and take over most of Ukraine it could negate Ukraine's debt, making the West pay double for its adventure.

That would be a just punishment on the USA for the Biden administration's failure to dismantle Russia.

Poland’s public television news stations went off the air yesterday as police conducted massive raids to seize public news station TVP, with fears becoming realized that Prime Minister Donald Tusk would move quickly to crack down on press freedoms once he assumed power.

[Tusk is known for being one of the most fanatical federalists among European leaders and has long advocated forcing political union on EU member states to create a federal European superstate - and he has the audacity to call his opponents far right - Boggart Blog.]

A group of senior Law and Justice (PiS) politicians, including party leader Jarosław Kaczyński and former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, arrived at the headquarters of state-run TV broadcaster TVP on Wednesday afternoon as the new pro-EU government moved to seize control of state-run press in dramatic authoritarian fashion.

Both Morawiecki and Kaczyński said the government’s decision to replace public media chiefs resembled a “coup d’état” and an illegal “takeover by force.”
