A largely unreported aspect of the Labour government's first budget in 14 years is that increaed Green levies on domestic fuel bills, ostensbly to support the transition from 'fossil fuels' to clean, green, magic electricity from cheap wind and solar power have been massively increased and will go on rising and add many hundreds of pounds to domestic consumers fuel costs. This shock news can only be found in the details released by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).
It is hardly worth mentioning that Chancellor Rachel Reeves' nastiest little tax hike, the one that will hit the poorest in society hardest, was completely unreported in mainstream media. It was most noticably absent from budget coverage in the publications and broadcast news from the proudly left wing organisations, those that claim to care most about protecting the poor and disadvantaged.
The increase in subsidies for wind and solar farm operators in the fine detail of Chancellor Reeves' Budget Statement to Parliament were buried deeply its true, but the fact that nobody in mainstream media spotted this item that will in some way affect everybody in the country is an abject failure of journalism.
Detailed figures reveal that the new levies are set to confiscate £16 billion a year from consumers from next year (2025). This is equivalent to nearly £600 a household, but the situation is only likely to get much worse with bacon sandwich regurgitating Ed Miliband, a swivel eyed fanatic follower of the Net Zero cult, and currently UK Energy Secretary committed to a 95% renewable energy system within six years. Needless to say any increase in consumers bills is bound to hit the poorest in society hardest, how ironic then that the Labour zealots love to claim they are the party that protects the poor and vulnerable at the expense of the wealthy.
To supply a highly developed nation of over 65 million people with the energy to meet its ever growing demand for electricity based generating curent from breezes and sun beams needs some kind of reliable back-up when the weather turns against us. Earlier this week, the wind stopped blowing for a couple of days and minimal power was obtained from this source. This far north (between 50 and 58 degrees lat.) and at this time of year there is already too small a span of powerful sunlight for solar to contribute much, so between then gas and nuclear (another no no for the green lobby,)

As the screenshot shows, if you can enlarge it enough, on this windless but fairly bright day, gas, biomass (wood pellets,) and nuclear (clean but not green) were providing 72% of our electricity, another 12% was imported from France and Norway via undersea cables, hydro and 'other (burning household waste,) gave us 4 % while wind and solar contributed just 14%. And if you're thinking that adds up to more than 100%, we were exporting 1% to Irelad where they're in a worse situation than ourselves, and the rest is due to rounding decimals up to whole numbers
The pretence that there is any realistic back up other than a secondary gas-based system is fading fast as plans for giant battery farms, flooding half the beauty spots in our National Parks for pumped hydro systems and a lunatic idea to construct giant flywheels jave proved uneconomic, impractical and downright insane.
Fintan Slye, the head of the operation controlling electricity supply into the grid, recently observed: “There will continue to be a significant amount of power plants in reserve for the cold, dull, windless weeks of winter, but they will run for limited periods.” To date we have yet to have sight of an official estimate of what all this might cost.
In the meantime, and it seems just for starters, British consumers have £16 billion to find every year, as the graph below compiled by Andrew Montford from Net Zero Watch shows.
Long time climate catastrophe sceptic Montford shows the estimated cost to consumers of green subsidies (mostly renewables) has rocketed in the last year and a half with estimates rising between 20% and 120%. In its report, the OBR blames the jump on the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme that compensates suppliers for low electricity prices but claws back money when rates rise above a certain level. Loosely-worded contracts seem to mean that money only flows one way into the pockets of the subsidy-hunting turbine owners.
The figures involved are staggering, 18 months ago the OBR was predicting that CfDs would save consumers nearly £10 billion between 2023-24 and 2028-29. However, six months ago, “they decided it would actually ‘cost’ us an extra £9 billion. And today they have announced that it will cost us £12 billion”, he added. Faced with these figures, the general public may recall that one of the first actions of the incoming Labour Government was to abolish an annual winter fuel allowance for older people, saving just £1.5 billion. Some might observe that such a sum is little more than a rounding error in the fantasy world of green economics and subsidies.

Unfortunately, until it really hurts, the public will continue to believe that achiveing Net Zero is the only way to 'save the planet.'. However, when the huge for the brave new, Net Zero world come rolling (at the same time as the inevitable power cuts start), then the penny will drop. They will witness huge bills, less electricity, babies and Grandparents dead of hypothermia. Even the lies and misinformation of politicians and mainstream media will not be able to hide that.
In just three months Ubergruppenfuhrer SStarmer's authoritarian Socialist government has thrown away any goodwill it may have had since July, although there was little genuine goodwill, SStarmer's huge majority in Parliament was mostly due to a very low voter turnout and an outdated and now grossly unfair electoral system. Labour or The British National Socialist Workers' Part as we Boggart Bloggers ptrefer to think of them, have been almost comically incompetent in all they have touched. There will be a huge backlash, perhaps starting with the farmers, the betrayal of whome we reported yesterday. However, people aren’t ready to forgive the treacherous Tories yet, they have years of work ahead.
