After lying for months, the media are preparing the public for Ukraine’s military collapse...
Diogenes, one of the ancient world’s illustrious philosophers, believed that lies were the currency of politics, and those lies were the ones he sought to expose and debase. To make his point, Diogenes occasionally carried a lit lantern through the streets of Athens in the daylight. If asked why, Diogenes would say he was searching for an honest man.
Finding an honest man today in Washington, D.C., is equally challenging. Diogenes would need a Xenon Searchlight in each hand.
Still, there are brief moments of clarity inside the Washington establishment. Having lied prolifically for months to the American public about the origins and conduct of the war in Ukraine, the media are now preparing the American, British, and other Western publics for Ukraine’s military collapse. It is long overdue.
The Western media did everything in its power to give the Ukrainian defense the appearance of far greater strength than it really possessed. Careful observers noted that the same video clips of Russian tanks under attack were shown repeatedly. Local counterattacks were reported as though they were operational maneuvers.
Russian errors were exaggerated out of all proportion to their significance. Russian losses and the true extent of Ukraine’s own losses were distorted, fabricated, or simply ignored. But conditions on the battlefield changed little over time. Once Ukrainian forces immobilized themselves in static defensive positions inside urban areas and the central Donbas, the Ukrainian position was hopeless. But this development was portrayed as failure by the Russians to gain “their objectives.”
Ground-combat forces that immobilize soldiers in prepared defenses will be identified, targeted, and destroyed from a distance. When persistent overhead intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets, whether manned or unmanned, are linked to precision guided-strike weapons or modern artillery systems informed by accurate targeting data, “holding ground” is fatal to any ground force. This is all the more true in Ukraine, because it was apparent from the first action that Moscow focused on the destruction of Ukrainian forces, not on the occupation of cities or the capture of Ukrainian territory west of the Dnieper River.
The result has been the piecemeal annihilation of Ukrainian forces. Only the episodic infusion of U.S. and allied weapons kept Kiev’s battered legions in the field; legions that are now dying in great numbers thanks to Washington’s proxy war.

Energy Transition Goals At Risk As EU May Label Lithium As Toxic
European Commission could move to put lithium on a list of toxic substances.
This piece of regulation could drive up prices across the battery supply chain.
Should the European Commission take this decision, it may undermine the EU’s energy security.
A potential European Commission (EC) act to classify lithium as a Category 1A reproductive toxin in this year’s fourth quarter could undermine the European Union (EU)’s attempt to create and support a domestic battery materials supply chain.
The EU currently relies heavily on imports of lithium to supply its nascent electric vehicle (EV) production sector and the classification may increase its reliance on other regions, at a time when the union is focused on energy security and reducing emissions. Europe has announced plans to expand lithium battery-grade Li Carbonate production from nothing today to 8.3% of global production by 2025, according to Rystad Energy research.
Europe has similar ambitions for lithium hydroxide, which is crucial for long-range EV batteries. Even without the potential decision by the EC, it will still fall well short of closing the estimated 218% deficit gap in lithium hydroxide processing that Europe is facing by the end of 2030, according to Rystad Energy research. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) at the end of 2021 published its opinion that it agreed with French proposals to classify three lithium salts as Category 1A reproductive toxicants. It determined that lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide and lithium chloride should be classified under the Classification, Labelling & Packaging (CLP) Regulation as substances that may damage fertility and unborn children. It also agreed that the substances may harm breastfed children.
Initial proposals were presented to the EC on March 23 and 24 and are now under review and consultation, with the EC set to publish its first draft of the act between October and December. EU member states can still object to these proposals through the summer.
While the classification would not stop lithium usage, it is highly likely that it would have an impact on at least four stages in the EU lithium battery supply chain: lithium mining; processing; cathode production; and recycling. Several administrative issues, risk management and restrictions could hit each of these fledgling industries in Europe, which would drive up costs.

Sometime last year besotted Boris Johnson unveiled his flagship policy for heating all our homes with zero emissions heat sourced from ... wait for it ... the cold air outside our homes. Under the Government’s “boiler upgrade scheme”, 'woke' and environmentally conscious homeowners would be able to apply for vouchers that knock up to £6,000 off the cost of installing heat pumps to transfer heat from outside our homes (on a winter's day,) into our baths, showers and heating systems.
Now there is nothing wrong with heat pumps, they are simply a refrigerator or air conditioninh unit in reverse and the technology has been around for over a hundred years. And in places like Australia where our picture was taken, they work very well. But in Britain in the depths of winter? There's a bit of a difference. If you are curious to know how heat pumps work we reported in detail on the technology a year ago HERE, There are problems with heat pumps of course, mainly because the scientists who dreamed up this latest green idiocy were working with mathematical models of a home, its occupants and an average day. And as usual the mathematical models work just fine but have nothing to do with reality. One is that they require shitloads of electricity to run them, and on those cold, windless, sunless days of a typical British winter when output from wind turbines and solar panels is negligable, if we have abandoned fossil fuels and declined to build new nuclear plant because the Exstinktion Rebellion crusties don't like it, where will that eletricity come from?
The governments envisaged three-year programme to 'nudge' us all to throw out our efficient boilers and storage heaters and rely on inefficient, unreliable technologies included a scheme to make the devices more affordable and stimulate domestic demand, with ministers hoping that plumbers will be installing 600,000 per year by 2028.
But despite 30,000 vouchers being made available for the current
financial year, only 4,100 applications have been received and only
2,500 issued since the scheme opened on May 23. A big part of the problem was that the vouchers are worth £6000 and the heat pump plus installation costs upwards of £25,000 (£10,000 for the heat pump, the rest for upgrading and adapting electrical and plumbing systems.
Former chancellor Rishi Sunak, who is currently campaigning to replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, has hinted he could scrap the scheme altogether and divert cash towards efforts to improve household insulation.
Craig Mackinlay, a Tory MP who chairs the Net Zero Scrutiny Group, claimed the figures underlined “the futility of a target-led approach which attempts to force consumers into adopting technologies which they simply don't want, are expensive and don’t work very well”.
MacKinlay said: “Just like the period of subsidies for electric cars, heat pump vouchers are only likely to be used by those with the additional resources to pay for such expensive playthings.
“Although the Treasury has been unable to spend as much money as they were hoping to, this still equates to large sums of money wasted on people who don't need state hand-outs.
“The Government urgently needs to develop a market-friendly approach to decarbonisation which focuses on developing technologies people would choose to use without compulsion.”
Meanwhile, green campaigners have also criticised the government scheme for not being ambitious enough, but as always with the Greens all they offer is ideology because they have no practical solutions. As with sustainable sources for electricity there are many 'green' technologies that look great on paper but when it comes to transposing theory into real world performance they fall short simply because the sciencetits had simply ignored evidence of flaws in their theory.

Hit Brake On Net Zero, Voters Tell Wannabe Prime Ministers
A majority of Conservative party members who will vote in the leadership contest want the next prime minister to pause and review the push for Net Zero, a new poll has revealed. The Telegraph has more.
These results increae pile pressure on leadership hopefuls Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak to strengthen their stance on the cost likely of transitioning from coal and gas fuelled electricity generating plants to inefficient, unreliable, intermittent 'green power' sources. Both have committed to honour the pledge to eliminate carbon emissions by 2050 but said they will revisit how the UK is set to achieve it as targets for 2030 and 2035 look increasingly unattainable.
A new poll by YouGov found 59% of Tory voters want Net Zero frozen, which rises to 70% when don’t knows are excluded.
In contrast, only 30% of Labour and Lib Dem backers would like to see the climate target suspended by the next prime minister. Overall this suggests a majority of the punlic are sceptical of the achievability and the promised benefits og eliminating Carbon Dioxide emissions. The survey showed that support for a review of the green policy is strongest among over-65s, almost one in six of whom are in favour.Overall, the public are narrowly in favour of such a move by 52% to 48% when those who expressed no opinion are excluded.
Working-class voters, who will be hit hardest by spiralling energy costs, are more likely to be sceptical of environmental targets than middle-class people, the results of the poll show. They also reveal that backing for a rethink is highest in the Midlands and Wales and lowest in London and Scotland. Ms. Truss, the frontrunner in the Tory leadership race, has pledged to temporarily scrap green levies on energy bills to help with the cost of living crisis.
The Foreign Secretary has said she will look again at how Net Zero is delivered, insisting “what I don’t want to see is ordinary households penalised”.
Mr. Sunak has committed himself to building more offshore wind farms if elected but has also insisted hitting green targets “can’t mean neglecting our energy security”.
The YouGov survey of 1,797 Britons was carried out last Wednesday and Thursday, and was commissioned by Net Zero sceptic group CAR26. It comes after a separate study by the pollster found only four per cent of Tory members think the green policy should be a top policy priority.

Are US Supplied Long Range Missiles Really Winning The War For Ukraine?

Last month the Russian military high command announced an "operational pause" in the Donbas. region of Ukraine, where the most intense fighting in the current conflict has been focused. Such breaks are not unusual in a high-intensity war of attrition, because of the vast supplies required and damages inflicted. Armies need to regroup, re - supply, review progress and give the troops time off.
Naturally, given the one sided tone of reporting by mainstream media of the five month old war, which has gone something like: "Ukraine are winning this war, the Ukrainians are driving Russian forces back. Ukraine's army have retaken most of the territory occupied by Russia, Putin has been humiliated. Putin is on his deathbed, boy are the Ukrainians giving those nasty Russian bullies a good thrashing. Oh dear, another major Ukrainian city / military stronghold has fallen to the Russian onslaught, the reporting by mainstream broadcast and print media in the west has claimed there must be another reason that Russian military activity has decreased.
Well for reasons stated above or possibly other considerations it has decreased. Russian artillery fire has been reduced, and there seem to have been less offensives. But of course we do not get told anything remotely resembling what is really going on.
Thus while the Russians are regrouping in Donbas and reviewing strategy, but still advancing, western media reports the Ukrainians have started hitting targets on the Kherson front in the South.,even making their lies more incredible by claiming the Ukrainians have actually taken more territory off Russia in the South, than the Russians have off them in the Donbas. It's bollocks of course, the Ukranian army (and their American helpers but you didn't learn that last bit from me, OK?) have fired a few long range missiles from American Himars systems into Russian occupied territory and managed to hit one or two significant targets.Kherson is very important strategically - it is the only foothold that the Russians have north and west of the Dnipro River, which is the major strategic barrier that runs across Ukraine from Crimea to Kyiv. If the Ukrainian attack was anywhere near being successful, Russia would have called the big guns up to the front. They have not done so which suggests they are not unduly worried.
While there is an element in the west who glorify war (see Wilfrid Owen's poem Dulce et decorum est,) most of us just want the fighting to stop. Mention this however and the mob will attack, accusing one of being 'Putin's poodle, hating democracy (as if the corrupt, neo - Nazi Ukrainian government is anything to do with democracy, a fascist, a right wing nutcase, a propaganda troll on The Kremlin's payroll and all sorts of nonsense. These people then go on to call for escalation of the war, direct intervention against Russia by NATO, supplying the neo - Nazi nutters in Kiev with nuclear weapons and sensing in the SAS / US Navy Seals to take out Putin. It's difficult to have a rational exchange of opinions with such people.
Even before the current conflict began we knew the Russian military would be brutal and ruthless, if not quite competent in prosecuting their war. They have a reputation going back hundreds of years. We knew that the government in Kiev had been provoking Russia on an almost daily basis since the pro - western elements were put into power following a coup d'etat engineered by the USA and NATO. Anyone with even the most tenuous hold on reality knew Ukraine could not win this war without direct NATO involvement, and that direct intervention would escalate a local conflict into a global war.
This blog, my colleagues and I, do not want any war, we do not want innocent Ukrainian civilians dying, we do not want Russian soldiers dying. But what we three old gits and our occasional contributors knew from day one and before is that the Russianm mindset and the east European mindset operate on a different set of values to those of us in the west.
1. Gas: Should Russia cut off the gas supply half of Europe (and most of NATO) will be plunged into economic meltdown and social chaos. Attitudes and unity could change very quickly if the Russians weaponise this vital commodity. USA, the EU and their allies were quick to sanction Russia, crying foul now Russia is sanctioning them is hardly credible.
2. Grain and vegetable oil: Not only are some poor countries now facing a food crisis as wheat and cooking oil, two essential commodities that Russia and Ukraine are the largest exporters of. UK is fairly safe on this one, we get most of our imported grain from Canada, but other west European nations rely on imports from Russia and Ukraine.
3. Battlefield nuclear: The Russian army in the field may have been brutal but Russia's high command has been very restrained. Were they to roll out the big weapons the slaughter would be on an unprecedented scale.
4. Fertilizer: Russia also provides the raw materials for over 50% of the commercial fertiliser used to boost crop yields. So were the war to end tomorrow and the grain start flowing again, the shortage of fertilizer will ensure a vastly reduced harvest and shortages next year.
Outcome? Stalemate. I can't see Ukraine ever getting Crimea back, and it will be hard going to re-take the South and South East. It's very easy for those sitting comfortably in the West wanting Ukraine to fight to the bitter end. But in reality that is going to cost. Crimea especially will be such a major operation I doubt Ukraine could do it without the direct involvement of the U.S. U.K. France and other NATO members, and that would risk escalation to a global conflict should China grab the opportunity to annexe Taiwan while Washington was looking the other way.

Putin Raises The Stakes: Gazprom Halts Another Nord Stream Turbine Cutting Flows by 50%; European Gas Prices Soar
EU leaders, and especially Germans, heaved a sigh of relief on Thursday 22 July when after two weeks of being beset by fears that Moscow would not restart flows along the Nord Stream 1 pipeline when its 10 day scheduled maintenance operation was completed, the Russian gas company turned the gas back on, although only to its pre-maintenance level of about 40% of maximum capacity.
Their relief did not last however, as the USA, lead military power in NATO continued to supply Ukraine with long range artillery for its war with Russia. Germany the EU's largest economy by far and the most dependent of all NATO states on imported Russian gas to keep its electricity generating plants running and power flowing to business and domestic users was always a soft target for Russian reprisals. Many commentators in mainstream and new media had been speculating that Russia might seize opportunity to turn the screws on both literally and metaphorically, on Germany and its other EU customer sand that's precisely what happened. Shortly after Siemens finally delivered transport documents for the controversial Nord Stream turbine that had allegedly been stuck in Canada for weeks, Gazprom unexpectedly announced it would halt one more Nord Stream turbine at its Portovaya compressor station from July 27, “taking into account the technical conditions of the engine,” the Russian company says in a statement.
This means that as had been whispered much of last week, gas flows from Portovaya will drop to as much as 33 million cubic meters per day from 7am Moscow time on July 27, which means flows along NS1 will decline by half, from 40% of capacity to just 20%.
This is a disaster both economically and socially for Germany, where some communities have already had to introduce gas and electricity rationing. If the situation goes on for more than two or at most three weeks it will certainly drive the Germany economy into recession.
According to Bloomberg energy expert Javier Blas, with "Nord Stream 1 flowing at just 20% of capacity from July 27, Germany will NOT have enough natural gas to make it throughout the whole winter **unless big demand reductions are implemented. Berlin will need to activate stage 3 of its gas emergency program."
Translation: unless Putin changes his mind, Germany is facing not just a freezing winter, but a bitter recession.
Needless to say, Germany was not happy with the latest reminder who holds all the cards in Europe. Unfortunately the single word that defines the USA's Biden administration is 'demented' and having committed to supporting Ukraine until the war is won the senile president's handlers are unlikely to bite the bullet and admit that Ukraine cannot defeat Russia for the sake of helping a loyal ally like Germany.

Russia and China announce a new global reserve currency

As our Currency Wars page has been warning for years,China and Russia are preparing to take down the the U.S. dollar and replace it with their own global reserve currency. What may seem bizarre to people who rely on mainstream media for their news, there has been no mention at all of this event in the print or broadcast media of the USA, UK or European Union member states.
It was always on the cards that Russia, China and rest of the BRICS countries would use the CIA / NATO engineered war in Ukraine to launch the main thrust of their economic war on the west, in fact after having written so much in our Currency Wars page about the inevitability of Russia and China challenging the US dollar’s global reserve status, now, it’s happening we can only say: "We Told You So".
It should not surprise anyone who has been paying attention for the past few years, and in particular the current year to date, that Russia and China are strengthening their economic ties partly in response to Western sanctions on Russia as a result of the country’s war in Ukraine and partly because with COVID, Climate Change, the fuel crisis, runaway inflation, food shortages and the war vying for media attention it is an ideal time for Russia and China to make their move. And they have been preparing this dollar replacement strategy for at least the eight years we have been writing about it, and probably longer.
What is more likely to surprise politicians and the economists who advise them however, is that rest of the BRICS countries, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, have joined Russia in the effort and are officially working on their own “new global reserve currency,” RT reported in late June. Three of these were supposed to be the west's allies and fully supportive of sanctions and isolating Russia economically and politically It seems those mainstream media writers who were quick to declare VladimirPutin a busted flush will have to eat their words as the Russian leader has outsmarted them all as they stood in line waaiting to kiss zelenskyyyyy's Ukrainian arse.
“The issue of creating an international reserve currency based on a basket of currencies of our countries is being worked out,” Vladimir Putin said at the BRICS business forum last month.
And as we reported IN 2015 Russia, in collaboration with China set up its own system for processing international financial transactions, almost as if The Kremlin anticipated the western powers would cut off Russian companies from the SWIFT system. With this system in place for several years it will not be difficult to work with China and the BRICS nations to develop “reliable alternative mechanisms for international payments” in order to “cut reliance on the Western financial system.”
In the meantime, and again as we predicted earlier this year, Russia is also taking steps to strengthen the alliance between BRICS nations, including re-routing trade to China and India, and via proxies to the west in order to beat sanctions according to CNN:
President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Russia is rerouting trade to "reliable international partners" such as Brazil, India, China and South Africa as the West attempts to sever economic ties.
"We are actively engaged in reorienting our trade flows and foreign economic contacts towards reliable international partners, primarily the BRICS countries," Putin said in his opening video address to the participants of the virtual BRICS Summit.
In fact, “trade between Russia and the BRICS countries increased by 38% and reached $45 billion in the first three months of the year” this year, according to that report. Meanwhile, Russian crude sales to China have hit record numbers during Spring of this year, replacing Saudi Arabia as China’s primary oil supplier.
"Together with BRICS partners, we are developing reliable alternative mechanisms for international settlements," Putin said.
In June, Putin also accused the West
of ignoring"the basic principles of [the] market economy" such as free
trade. "It undermines business interests on a global scale, negatively
affecting the wellbeing of people, in effect, of all countries," he
said. Love him or hate him you have to admire Vlad's chutzpah.
President Xi echoed Putin’s sentiments, according to a June writeup by Bloomberg.

The truth about Britain’s Covid deaths
In view of the hysterical repoting from mainstream media in print and broadcast news formats about the recently released report from The World Health Organisation containing estimates of Covid-related deaths internationally during the pandemic, one could be forgiven for suspecting we are all dead and nobody bothered to tell us. The measurement used to crank up the fear and panic generator to eleve has been the decidedly dodgy 'excess deaths' which is the difference between the number who died of all causes during the pandemic and the number who, on average, died in that period of the year and geopolitical region before the pandemic struck. This enabled sceptics to make comparisons between the British figures and excess deaths for the rest of Europe per 100,000 of the population. And when this blog and other people who have done so crunched the numbers it turns out The UK is not, after all, at the top of the death-league by miles because we all died, some of us several times. In fact the UK sits around the middle of the European excess deaths Champions League.
This is similar to the outcome when, a few weeks ago, the UK Office of National sStatistics (ONS) revealed that around 19.2 million people in ENGLAND alone (i.e. not the whole UK,) have not had a single shot of the non vaccine that does not protect anyone from COVID but appears to make them more vulnerable. The propaganda put out by governments and dutifully parroted by television news and the papers that only 3 million ignorant, irresponsible people continued to pose a threat to the (vaccinated) majority by refusing a single dose of the clotshot.
Though the methodology used to compile the report has attracted serious criticism from neutral statisticians, what really struck most of us alt_news sceptics has, predictably, been ignored by authors of any of the media reports and commentaries on the report I’ve seen, which have all focused on our outcome relative to those of other European countries. We did better than Italy, Spain and Germany but worse than France (but can the cheese eating surrender monkeys' figures be trusted?) when throughout the pandemic media reports had been spun to create the impression that we were doing exceptionally badly.
What's really interesting however, is while we are not much different to most of our near European neighbours, Italy, Germany and Spain, for example, had excess deaths respectively of 133, 116, and 111 per 100,000. Britain’s figure was 109. Even the United States was only 140, just ahead of Italy. Differences in the way countries counted or how they defined excess deaths could easily account for the variations in numbers. When we look at the figures a from a different angle, firstly, it is difficult to spot any obvious correlation between the pandemic--suppressing measures taken by different members of the WHO, and the outcomes in terms of excess mortality. This suggests we should have been more suspicious about the measures imposed by governments (lockdowns, mask mandates, travel restrictions etc.) as on the strength of available evidence that none had been successful, which is what epidemiologists who did not have a financial relationship with the companies that make up the Big Pharma Cartel, the World Heath Organisation, national governments or the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the philanthropic charity that has made $£€billions out of the pandemic, had predicted.
Mask-wearing was far less common in Sweden than in Britain, yet we had twice as many excess deaths, though most Swedes live in urban environments, like us. There’s a strong case for serious and exhaustive study of the role of masks, and of the harm they may have caused particularly to people with respiratory problems. We should be demanding that before such measures as mandatory making and lockdowns are imposed again there are controlled trials involving the study of human volunteers. There seems to be some kind of academic horror at this kind of scientific rigour, the sciencetits who rather worhip their mathematical models of a human population, a virus and a pandemic..
Many of us among the 19.2 million vaccine refusniks lost confidence in health advice from doctors, government agencies and media 'experts' a long time ago because it was established in proper scientific trials years ago that surface contact (touching stuff) does not constitute a a significant risk of contracting a virus. In spite of this official advice on washing out hands and using sanitizers rich in carcinogenic chemicals has not been corrected, there remain (at some economic and environmental cost) signs and hand-gel dispensers everywhere, wipes are still being distributed and cleaners are still prancing around dabbing at bannisters and hand-holds. It is a similar story on wearing masks, studies in 2020 showed that the cheap masks handed out everywhere did nothing, zro, zilch, to prevent or slow the spread of COVID and even the more expensive surgical masks had little effect. Yet bot kinds of mask had significant adverse effects relation to non COVID related problems. Why should we believe a government agency, scientific research establishment, academic institution on anything else, if the official advice on this has not changed and they are still pushing these completely ineffective measures and clamouring for more lockdowns which are now known to not only have been an economic disaster but also triggered a pandemic of mental health problems?
Here, though, is the thing that should not have shocked me (because the figures were broadly known) but did (because I did not know them). Some 109 excess deaths per 100,000 in Britain may be twice Sweden’s rate – but it’s still tiny! That’s about one person in a thousand. I had not properly understood how light the casualties have been in the developed world. And though it’s sad when anyone dies at any age, the average Covid-related casualty in Britain has been in the last ten years of his or her expected life, so viewed in terms of years lost the damage is far less severe than that inflicted by epidemics that target the young as well as old.
Yes, yes, ‘one death is one death too many’ etc, and no, I didn’t know these victims personally and if I had I might feel differently. All true enough. But how I feel is not the point. We do need to be able to count. When we count dispassionately we see a pandemic that took relatively few people away. Looking at the past 30 years, the pandemic did cause a sharp year-on-year difference, but there have been others.
Yet in trying to slow its spread (we were honest about that limited ambition, unlike the Australians, New Zealanders, Chinese and South Koreans) we took a two-year wrecking ball to our economy and to the educational and job prospects, not to say the mental health, of millions of our young people.

We have not even begun to register the fallout from the tsunami bearing down upon us in the form of AI (artificial intelligence) surveillance, and yet it is already re-orienting our world into one in which freedom is almost unrecognizable.
AI surveillance harnesses the power of artificial intelligence and widespread surveillance technology to do what the police state lacks the manpower and resources to do efficiently or effectively: be everywhere, watch everyone and everything, monitor, identify, catalogue, cross-check, cross-reference, and collude.
Everything that was once private is now up for grabs to the right buyer.
Governments and corporations alike have heedlessly adopted AI surveillance technologies without any care or concern for their long-term impact on the rights of the citizenry.
As a special report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace warns, “A growing number of states are deploying advanced AI surveillance tools to monitor, track, and surveil citizens to accomplish a range of policy objectives—some lawful, others that violate human rights, and many of which fall into a murky middle ground.”
Indeed, with every new AI surveillance technology that is adopted and deployed without any regard for privacy, Fourth Amendment rights and due process, the rights of the citizenry are being marginalized, undermined and eviscerated.
Cue the rise of digital authoritarianism.
Digital authoritarianism, as the Center for Strategic and International Studies cautions, involves the use of information technology to surveil, repress, and manipulate the populace, endangering human rights and civil liberties, and co-opting and corrupting the foundational principles of democratic and open societies, “including freedom of movement, the right to speak freely and express political dissent, and the right to personal privacy, online and off.”
The seeds of digital authoritarianism were planted in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, with the passage of the USA Patriot Act. Second, Ukraine has no real option to finish the war, they cannot win and only by winning could they persuade Russia to accept a ceasfire on Ukrainian terms. Russia on the other hand can simply withdraw - despite its aggression - and cripple Ukraine economically as they are now crippling the economies of Ukraine's main supporters in the European Union.
If Russia withdraws it is unlikely to suffer the type of attack that it itself perpetrated. This means that the timing of the end of the war is in Russia's hands.
Third, there is a need for unity in the West, not to escalate the war but to put pressure on Ukrain to accept reasonable terms for surrender and bring Russia to the negotiating table. However the UK govt need to dissociate Europe from America's efforts to use this conflict as a proxy war against Russia . It is largely a one-way war as any perusal of European media will confirm, and whatever is reported from the front line in Ukraine, in the economic war Putin is winning hands down as Europe faces energy shortages, food shortages, runaway inflation and the fragmentation of the European Union. However the perpetration of a continuous state of hostility between Russia and Europe benefits no one except Putin.It certainly does not benefit the United Kingdom.
