Very good piece about the state of democracy in Europe;

”Here the battle over democracy in Europe becomes part of a far wider struggle across the world. In 2024, some four billion people across more than 60 countries are due to vote in national elections, and the ones for the European Parliament. We might imagine that the world’s biggest-ever carnival of democracy is something to celebrate. But not, apparently, for the political and media elites atop our alleged Western democracies.

These elitists are terrified of the prospect of billions of people refusing to do as they are told and instead voting as they see fit. ‘Democracy’ is all very well so long as it suits the interests of those with the kratos; but if the demos take democracy too literally seeks to assert their will, that’s an entirely different matter. As one former member of President Barack Obama’s administration put it, they believe that you can have “too much of a good thing” and that Western society “might be a healthier democracy if it were a slightly less democratic one.” For some liberals in high places these days it seems that, where popular democracy is concerned, less really could be more.

It should now be clear that, yes, democracy is indeed under threat in 2024. But the danger to European democracy comes from above, not below. The Brussels elites are determined to hold back the democratic tide.

That’s why they have spent years politically threatening and financially blackmailing democratically-elected conservative governments in Hungary and Poland, hiding behind talk of the ‘rule of law’ to disguise the attempt to enforce the rule of unelected judges and bureaucrats. Having played their part in installing EU lackey Donald Tusk as Poland’s prime minister, and turned a blind eye to the new regime’s purge of its political opponents, Brussels officials are now making plans to wreak havoc on the Hungarian economy in order to bring its prime minister Viktor Orbán to heel; and if that fails, to strip Hungary (and any other dissident nation) of its democratic right to vote ‘no’ in European Council meetings. In the eyes of the high priests of EU conformism, Mr. Orban has committed the cardinal sin of repeatedly winning elections on a platform of ‘illiberal democracy’ that refuses to accept mass migration at Hungary’s borders or LGBTQ ideology in its schools.”

Farmers Rebellion Blockade Germany’s Biggest Airport

 

While the farmers' protests in France have entered a quieter phase after the government of Emmanuel Macron caved in to some of the agricultural workers most significant demands with a caveat from the French Farmers Union that they were ready to do it all again if the government did not deliver on its promises, in Germany things seemed to be getting even more heated over the weekend.

Farmers in Germany blocked roads around the  country’s busiest airport on Saturday as protests over prices and red tape spread across the continent. Hundreds of tractors were deployed to block the streets leading to Frankfurt Airport after a fuel subsidy cut was passed by the German parliament on Friday.

Farmers in Germany have been engaged in massive protests throughout January following a statement by Olaf Scholz’s  government that it would cut close to a billion euros in farm subsidies in response to a domestic budget crisis.

Several huge protests recently gridlocked the streets of the nation's capital and other large cities and forced Berlin into concessions that included rowing back completely on a plan to make farmers pay road tax on farm vehicles. However, as we see so often with globalist led governments that give with one hand and immediately snatch back with the other.

This was certainly the case when Scholz's far left coalition first reversed the plan to charge road tax on farm vehicles and then quickly neutered that concession by cutting fuel subsidy. Germany’s farmers’ union has signalled that it will only stop protesting once the subsidy cuts have been completely reversed.

Roadblocks by German farmers were synchonised with similar protests across Europe, as farmers in Poland, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and Italy joined the movement,  blocking roads and disrupting business and social life to draw attention to what they see as excessive EU environmental rules and unfair competition from outside the bloc.

On Friday, farmers blocked border crossings between Netherlands and Belgium with a government website showing long delays on three major motorways.

Meanwhile, a Polish farmers union announced a plan to blockade the border crossings to Ukraine starting on Feb 9.

“The passivity of the Polish authorities... regarding the import of agricultural produce and food products from Ukraine leave us with no other choice but to declare a general strike,” the farmers union Solidarity said in a press release.

In Greece, farmers blocked roads in the north and centre of the country as they demanded a reduction to EU regulation and expidited compensation payouts for farmers affected by the flooding and wildfires that devastated parts of the country last summer.

In Romania where protests have happened daily for several weeks, (sorry Romania, we've neglected you but estern Europe is on the periphery of boggart blog's radar,) authorities have agreed to increase fuel subsidies after farmers there teamed up with hauliers to block streets and obstruct the movement of food and goods.

French farmers, meanwhile, dismantled some of the roadblocks they had built on motorways around Paris after wringing concessions out of the government on fuel duty, pesticides and other environmental issues.

“The worst of the crisis is now behind us, but the issues we have to deal with are ahead of us,” Marc Fesneau, the French agriculture minister, said on CNEWS TV.

Protests have also been organised in Portugal, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus in recent days.

Belgian police used Rubber bullets and water cannons against hundreds of farmers who had travelled from around western Europe to protest outside the EU Headquarters in the city on Thursday. The farmers threw eggs, set off fireworks, and set fire to staw bales and rubbish fires near the building while demanding that European leaders stop punishing them with more taxes, rising costs and the loonytoons 'green' policies imposed to push the continent towards the ruling bureaucrats impossible and irrational 'net zero' targets and advancement 'green agenda' which will see European fo production destroyed and all 27 members of the European Union wannabe superstate ot empire forced to depend on imports to feed their populations, heat homes and power industry and transport.

The protests were deliberately planned to coincide with an EU leaders summit meeting, with the farmers calling on politicians and bureaucrats to scrap agricultural and environmental regulations imposed by Brussels diktat which under EU rules takes precedence over the sovereignty of national governments.

According to reports from eye witnesses posted on social media along with photograps and video, farmers have broken through the barricades outside the European Parliament and also ignited smoke bombs.

 "We want to stop these crazy laws that come every single day from the European Commission," said Jose Maria Castilla, a Spanish farmer in Brussels  to represent the Spanish farmers' union, Asaja. The protests, which started in Netherlands over a year ago come as EU leaders met to discuss a $50 billion aid package for Ukraine.

 Belgian PM Alexander De Croo said that the farmers' concerns would be added to the summit's agenda, saying "It is important that we listen to them."

Protest Becomes Open Rebellion In Europe As Farmers Uprising Against 'Green' Policies Spreads To Other Industries.

As this blog has been reporting since the late summer of 2022, farmers across many european Union member states including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Romania, have been gradually esclating a campaign of protest against the globalist policies beimg imposed by the EU and implemented by far left governments. The campaign started in Netherlands when the recently ousted government threatened compulsory puchase of farms that did not reduce nitrogen emissions by culling livestock. The Dutch farmers protests mainly took the form of obstructing major transport networks with tractors. 

Over the past eighteen months this campaign has become a widespread populist movement and is sweeping Europe at a time when over-regulation, high taxes, nonsensical 'net zero targets and the climate change agenda threaten the livelihoods and living standards not just of farmers but of working-class people in a wide range of industries. An even bigger worry for the now - panicking elites is that the transformation of a campaign by disgruntled farmers into a widespread non - violent (so far) comes several months before the campaigning for election to the European Parliament gets under way in in June. 

Some countries hit hardest so far by protests have been Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and France. Protests have already spread to Poland and Belgium and are expected to reach Spain and Portugal within the next few days. 

On Tuesday (30 January,), France's new prime minister, Gabriel Attal, promised farmers emergency funds and stricter trade controls on foreign products to guarantee fair competition but the farmers' union said it was to little too late and encouraged their members to continue the fight which the protestors appear to be doing with considerable enthusiasm. 

"I'm so proud of you," Serge Bousquet-Cassagne, head of Lot-et-Garonne department's farmer's association, told protesters in the south of Paris, adding

"You are fighting this battle because if we don't fight we die." 

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin told local TV station France 2 that police were preparing to defend strategic areas of larger cities. 

"They can't attack police, they can't enter Rungis, they can't enter the Paris airports or the center of Paris," said Darmanin, adding, "But let me tell you again that if they try, we will be there."

One gets the feeling that the minister may prove to be disastrously wrong. Will French troops fire on French citizens if ordered to do so or will they mutiny. This is how close EU member states have come to civil conflict because of the ruling elite's disregard for the welfare of the people and obsessive commitment to loonytoons ideologies like net zerom critical race theory and transgenderism.

Farmers throughout the world have been protesting the increasing regulations on agriculture. The media is barely covering the story, and when they do mention it, they say that the farmers are protesting due to Russia blocking supplies from Ukraine. This is simply untrue. The farmers are protesting against over-regulation, taxes, and the climate change agenda that is making it increasingly difficult for them to make a successful living.

EU farmers' complaints are very basic:

• Out-of-control energy prices (thank whoever blew up the Nord Stream).

• Disastours carbon-cutting targets.

• Overall inflation.

• Bureaucracy from radicals in Brussels.

• Ukrainian grain imports. 

The demonstrations, which could soon consume Europe, come ahead of the June European Parliament elections.

 The farmers are protesting against over-regulation, taxes, and the climate change agenda that is making it increasingly difficult for them to make a successful living.

EU farmers' complaints are very basic:

The demonstrations, which could soon consume Europe, started off with some humour, such as French farmers in Toulouse dumping dung on the town hall steps, but as steadily edging closer to violence with lorries and cars being overturned and burned and reports that police in some places have opened fire with rubber bullets on protestors.. 

As well as rge big issues listed abover, small farmers are upset that billionaire psychopaths linked to the WEF elites, such as Bill Gates whose agenda is to control everything he does not actually own, are aiming to reset the global food supply chain, a move that could render small-scale farming obsolete in favour of global 'Big Ag' corportations. If We The People are stupid and cowardly enough to allow that to happen, the recent increases in living costs will soon seem like insignificant small change.

Starmer must purge Corbynites says Telegraph – But Who Would Be Left In The Party

 

Four years after Jeremy Corbyn lost an election to a Tory landslide (even though the Tory government, in power since 2010, was deeply unpopular,) and finally relinquished the party leadership, to be replaced by Starmer, the Socialist Campaign Group, made up of about 30 far left Labour MPs remains as a thorn in the leadership's side and a reminder of the kind of extremism the left of the party stands for. These anti - semitic, transgendeism supporting, open borders advocating, terrorist loving loons may be an embarrassment to Starmer as he tries to capture moderate voters, but to mainstream British opinion, to British values themselves the idologies supported by the Socialist Campaign Group are anathema. Whether defending terorists, opposition to NATO, justifying Hamas atrocities in Israel, advocating the abandonment of all immigration controls, defunding the police or supporting the crominal activities of Extinction Rebellion or Just Stop Oil the group is constant reminder of the dark forces within the Labour Party that were became released Corbyn, and of the worst excesses of 'woke' Leftism.

But what of the statement that Starmer must purge the Corbynites?

The problem there is that 'Sir' Kier SStarmer, the privately educated posh boy is a Corbynite when it suits him, a Blairite when it suits him, a Lib Dem, Scottish or Welsh nationalist or even a Sinn Fein if he thinks it will pull a few votes from their supporters, he dared not define a woman for fear of antagonising Labour's powerful LGBT lobby and I'm told by reliable sources at the scene that on the one recent occasion when his face appeared to show an emotion he was in fact suppressing an outbreak of flatulence because the noise might have 'triggered' snowflakes among his party's supporters.

Vive la Commune? The French Are Revolting again

It is just over 150 years, in the wake of their country's defeat in the Franco Prussian war of 1871, that French citizens raise the barricades and laid siege to central Paris. The uprising was short lived and its conclusion bloody but it changed French society. Previous instances of barricades being raised occurred in 1815 as the empire built by Napoleon Bonaparte disintegrated and many poorer people faced starvation, (if you've read any of Victor Hugo's multi - volume novel Les Miserables or seen a movie, TV dramatisation or the musical you've some idea of how that one turned out. 

In 1789 the Paris commune took over the city and were the municipal government until 1795. The French have a track record for the kind of thing that is going on now. This time however, the barricades are not old furniture and junk, they are formed of tractors, farm vehicles and piles of brown, smelly stuff usually found in abundance even on the best kept farms. Yes, far from petering out the French farmer's protests we reported last week seem to be escalation into a full scale rebellion against the globalist, neo - liberal government of Emmanuel Macron and his World Economic Forum bosses. 

As the well organised Farmers prepared to put into action their plan to besiege Paris and cut off supply routes delivering food to the city of approx 9 million people, the government revealed that it was in panic mode by calling in the military even at this early stage.

The farmers had announced they would begin an  “indefinite siege” of the capital today (Monday 29 January,) after staging widespread protests in provincial cities last week warning Parisians of a “black week ahead” amid an escalating dispute over pay, tax and regulations.

All major roads leading into Paris were to be “occupied” by agricultural workers as they sought to raise the pressure on President Emmanuel Macron’s government, farmers unions said.

FNSEA, the country’s largest farmer’s union, and the Young Farmers group warned of “an indefinite siege of the capital”.

The move followed after more than a week of nationwide protests by agricultural workers which saw motorways blocked by convoys of tractors.

The plan backs up threats to “starve” the city. Amid warnings the capital only has three days of food. tractors gridlocked major roads bringing traffic to a grinding halt around the city with stacks of hay bales also used to block carriageways as part of a bitter and long running dispute over  work conditions, imposition of unworkable EU net zero targets and what is perceived as a set of policies that attack agricultural workers' livelihoods. France is a major agricultural producer in the EU and a significant exporter of food. Lorries have been overturned and loads burned on main roads leading into the city centre.

Dissatisfaction has been building for almost two years as farmers anger simmered over incomes, red tape and environmental policies they say undermine their ability to compete with other non - EU countries. The problems in France run deep with the current wave of protests being a continuation of the 'Gilets Jaunes' (Yellow jackets,) protest movement which disrupted the country in 2018 - 19, only being stopped by the COVID pandemic.

As the siege progressed today Benoit Durand, a grain farmer, told French broadcaster BFM TV: “We are holding a siege in Chartres, one hour away from Paris. It’s part of the blockade... the goal is to put pressure on the government.””[Blockading Paris] will happen naturally. Parisians are going to be hungry. The goal is to starve Parisians. That’s it”.

Near Beauvais, north of Paris, dozens of tractors lined the highway in one of many such protests across the country. Armoured police vehicles were deployed to Rungis on Monday after some farmers threatened to “occupy” it. Over 8,000 tons of goods pass through its market every day to feed nearly 12 million people.

Hottest Ever UK January Day – In One Small Village

Today has been the hottest January day ever recorded in the UK, according to Met Office data and reported throughout mainstream media. The village of Kinlochewe, in northern Scotland, which is home to fewer than 100 people, recorded a high of 19.6C on January 28, with nearby villages in the northernmost regions of the Highlands also in excess of 18C. The previous record for a January day was 18.3C, which had occurred four times, most recently on January 16, 2003 so given that accurate records for this part of the world do not go back very far there is really nothing unique about this event.

Today’s high is not due to ‘climate change’ although Warmageddonists and climate alarmists have been quick to claim it is, but is a result of a rare phenomenon known as the Fohn (or Foehn) effect (literally ‘the hairdryer effect’) that sees isolated spots near mountains hit with a narrow blast of hot air.

Britain is currently experiencing a southerly wind, bringing warm air up to the British Isles from the Azores. Most of the country experienced an unusually (but not remarkably) warm winter’s day, but in the more mountainous regions in the north, a Foehn Effect amplified the mild weather even further.

With this warmer weather coming on the back of a spell of dire weather across the country, including in Scotland, as storms Henk, Isha and Jocelyn battered the UK this month the Warmageddonist lobby have been triggered to ramp up their predictions of imminent disaster if we do not shut down civilised communities immediately and return to a medieval lifestyle.

It is notable that phrases like “On record” and “Since records began” occur in mainstream media reports of this event, as they do in all sensationalist reporting of unusual weather. As Met Office records only go back to 1860, less than 200 years, they’re fairly meaningless phrases but scare gullible and compliant people half to death. What was the temperature when the Romans ruled Britain and grew grapes to produce their beloved wine locally?

What temperatures were experienced during the Medieval Warm Period which fake Nobel Prizewinning climate fraudster Michael Mann judiciously excluded from his calculations when creating the now infamous ‘Hockey Stick graph,?’ What was the temperature when dinosaurs roamed in Britain? Attention grabbing headline phrases like ‘Highest ever temperature’ and ‘hottest on record’ are designed to keep the climate change scam at the top of the agenda.

The previous record for a January day was 18.3C, which had occurred four times, most recently on January 16, 2003, so nothing noteworthy at all, except for the gullible.

Also the statement widely reported in fervid articles and broadcast news segments claimed that last year is set to be the second warmest ever in the UK seems remarkably similar to the kind of statement I have heard every year for around 20 years now. But that kind of consistency is easy to achieve when evidence is collected only from mathematical models programmed by computing amateurs, empirical evidence tells a different story but one that the ruling elites do not wish to encourage discussion of.

We should always be wary of any statements from any western public bodies, whose political leaders are in thrall to the failed theory of dangerous man-made global warming and wannabe global government organisations like the WEF and United Nations. Apart from the endless exaggeration and propaganda from these organisations, QUANGOs and government agencies there is a track record of manipulation, falsifying of past and present data sets to make the past appear to be colder than it was. Another statistical ‘device’, is to carefully select time periods when some, largely insignificant, warming occurred, all whilst ignoring the previous periods of much warmer conditions. The 1920s and ’30s were, in reality, far warmer than subsequent decades and our present temperatures.

Viewed against the time scales of earlier geological periods, all these slight perturbations are totally insignificant, as the earth has experienced far colder and far warmer time periods.
