Europe: Green Tyranny Versus The People

 

We have reported in this blog on the latest green nonesense, namely EU demands for unreasonable cuts to nitrate fertiliser use and to numbers of livestock kept on farms, in order to reduce the agricultural sectors notrogen emissions which are alleged to be harmful to the environment. The real reason for thos new war in nitrogen, an inrert gas which forms over 75% of our breatheable atmosphere, is more likely to be necessitated by a desire among the European bureaucratic elite's desire to satisfy their ivory tower environmental and climate rules thus enabling the self righteous elitists to feel virtuous. With threats of severe financial punishments for nations which don’t comply with the required cuts this policy must be seen as a direct attck on Europe's food producers.

When angry voters kick out the politicians attempting to impose these unpopular cuts, as happened in regional elections in Netherlands last week, the EU claims their hands are clean, because it was the elected politicians who actually voted to accept EU recommendations as policy, and impose the penalties for non compliance which has led to the populist backlash. But the EU are still there in the background, setting targets and demanding cuts which cannot be net by any practical means and compliance can only be enforced by abuses of power.

Have elected politicians in Netherlands, and Germany, Poland, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain, nations to which the farmers' tractor protests have spread, really been reduced humandroids, capable only of carrying out the bidding of unelected EU bureaucrats? No matter which politicians are elected, they quickly get a visit from the EU, the real leadership, and receive a long list of demands, attached to severe penalties for non-compliance.

I hope the BoerBurgerBeweging / Farmer-Citizen Movement has the testicular fortitude to call the EU’s bluff. This EU green tyranny, can only maintain its grip on power so long as it operates from the shadows. If the BBB calls the EU’s bluff, and forces the EU to show their hand, to openly start ordering Netherlands politicians to comply, the situation would rapidly run out of control. After last week the position of the ruling coalition in the National Assembly is untenable. It is hard to imagine the people of The Netherlands would put up with such blatant abuse abuse of their democracy and national sovereignty and accept their elected government, being openly ordered around like hired hands. Anyone who thinks they will does not much about the nistory of The Netherlands and Dutch people.

But there is a pattern here that has been building for severasl decades.  The EC seems to be assuming more power than it was ever meant to have. Only more states quitting the EU, as the UK did, will stop this madness (and, even then, maybe not). If nitrogen is to be demonized, as CO2 has been, will someone tell these politiical clowns and the idiots who  advise them, (idiot, I much conclude, has become a synonym of scientist,) just what proportion of the atmosphere nitrogen represents

To get some clue as to what is really going on we have to consider why there is such a strong commitment to green lunacy from the political class in Europe. One is the memory of the lessons of WWII. Its a constant underlying unspoken memory, but it influences everything. Deeply buried under it and never spoken of, but there, is the sense that the EU is the only conceivable way to make a world with a united Germany safe, but there’s also the feeling that they cannot conceivably go back to the Europe of fully independent nation states in any case. 

Thus, since the original Common Market of 6 nations transformed into the European Economic Community in the 1960s or 70s and began to expand the thrust has been for 'ever closer union.'

I remember seeing a TV news report on a performance of Gorecki’s Third Symphony, attended on some EU occasion by the EU dignitaries (including the UK PM of the time, David Cameron). There was no doubt why it had been included.

The second reason the EU will probably survive this pushback  against its authoritarian control freakery is because like all bureaucracies its institutions are surprisingly adaptable. Bureaucrats' greatest skill is to protect their careers, incomes and privileged lifestyles, the organisations they manage find ways through every crisis by fudge and compromise. So this kind of opposition to green tyranny we are seeing now may be encouraging to those of us who oppose authoritarianism and globalism, but it would be foolish to write off the bureucrats so soon, they have a way of muddling through through somehow.

The thing that may at some point break up the Union is an external shock of the right nature and scale (a collapse of the global banking system for example.)  But you have to ask yourself what will replace it in such a case. To go back to the Europe of nations, boundaries, independent currencies would cause enormous and costly upheaval. The yearned for  United States of Europe may have become an impossible dream but the current 27 member EU contains too many economic basket cases among its membership to simply break up. But as we have seen over the past two weeks, a collapse of the global banking system is more likely than any of us want to imagine. So we must stay in the game and hope the dice in those casinos known as the financial markets roll our way.

Europes Tractor Protests Spread To Germany And Now Include Fishing Trawlers

Hundreds of farmers have descended in their tractors on a small German coastal town to protest measures imposed by the European Union as part of the Great Reset and the bid to 'save the planet' by reducing CO2 emissions from cow farts.

400 tractors reportedly gathered in the North Sea fishing port and tourist resort of Büsum on Wednesday to protest what is probably the most insane environmentalist policy dreamed up by the EU idealogues to day, to reduce the amount of nitrogen emitted by agricultural processes by attacking the way farmers produce our food. The policy is of course being gleefully and zealously being implemented by politicians in Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, Madrid, Warsaw and other EU member states on their behalf.

The protest by German farmers follows a pattern set bu similar mass demonstrations in Belgium and the Netherlands, all of which were organised to express opposition the European Commission’s plan to reduce nitrogen pollution across the European continent, even if that means forcibly closing farms in some areas deemed to be problematic. What mystifies sensible people most about this policy is that nitrogen makes up over 75% of the eart's atmosphere and is essential to plant and animal life.

Such green agenda policies have angered many people in Germany, both in and beyond the agricultural sector with thousands of ordinary citizens joining the hundreds of farmers descending on Büsum to attend the three-day protest against green agenda rules imposed by regional, national and European authorities. 

While the policies of Germany’s ruling coalition, apparently dictated by the far left Green party and the Green farming minister Cem Özdemir are portrayed as being about animal welfare and a transition to organic farming, critics point out the inevitable results of these sound-good policies are farms with fewer animals producing less food, thus inevitably leading to higher food prices and more pressure on living standards.

Unfortunately though the nominally centrist Social Democrats (SDP) are the largest coalition partner, they are held to ransom by The Greens without whom the SDP could not form a sustainable coalition. Thus while claiming to be a moderte government the coalition is enacting increasingly extremist policies, especially on environment, immigration and social issues.

Özdemir for his part has said that while he takes “hunger very seriously”, nevertheless he believes “you shouldn’t misuse it as an argument to make compromises in terms of biodiversity and climate protection.” 

This is, of course, nor far removed from 'Let them eat cake,' and though Özdemir may not lose his head for making such a crass and ignorant remark, Germany's coalition government is looking increasingly unsustainable with the pro - business Free Democratic Party (FDP) having effectively quit due to losing half its support because it has supported far left policies imposed by The Greens.

The farmers protest in Büsum has been joined by at least 60 trawlers, the fishermen are set to hold a demonstration at sea in protest of an EU ban on certain types of trawling, a move that is set to severely damage Germany’s shrimp fishing industry. The EU says the fishing technique is harmful to the environment. Surprisingly perhaps, the Cultural Marxist idealists of the European Commissioners have not gone as far as to claim fishing is racist.

In spite of repeated repeated warnings from academics, business and welfare agencies that food production in the Europe is now under threat largely due to energy prices and the war in Ukraine, The Bureaucrats of Brussels have simply pressed ahead with their policy of making life impossible for farmers, in line with their ideological aim to shift wealth from Europe's prosperous liberal democracies to third world shitholes run by tyrannical dictators. To this end they have forced governments of member nations into implementing various restrictions on what fertilisers and pesticides they can use, often justifying any bans with totally spurious and pseudoscientific references to the environment.

By far the worst of these measures are those aimed at curbing the nitrogen content of European soils, with officials in Brussels outright ordering authorities in the Netherlands to forcibly shut down farms in the country in order to hit green targets set by EU bureaucrats which make no sense at all in either practical or scientific terms.

The threat of these forced farm shutdowns has been the trigger that provoked mass outrage in the country over the last year, culminating in the small FarmerCitizenMovement (BBB) party coming first in the country’s local elections last month.

France Burns As Million Protesters Rage Against Pension Reforms

France is engulfed in turmoil following President Emmanuel Macron's controversial decision to raise the retirement age. Over a million people participated in nationwide protests on Thursday, transforming urban areas into scenes of chaos. These demonstrations, the largest in years, have triggered fuel shortages, hundreds of arrests, and even claims of "civil war."

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told French media outlet CNews on Friday morning that more than 900 fires were reported in the streets of Paris on Thursday night -- in one of the most violent days of protests in a while. 

"There were a lot of demonstrations and some of them turned violent, notably in Paris," Darmanin said. He said more than a million people marched yesterday. 

Police warned anarchist groups were infiltrating marches across Paris and other demonstrations. Men wearing hoods and facemasks were seen smashing windows and setting fire to trash piles and, in some cases, burning buildings. Germany's Chancellor Scholz says 'No Reason To Worry' As Deutsche Bank Bloodbath Reignites Global Bank Crisis Fears

Last night, amid assurances from the US Federal Reserve that a global banking crisis had been averted, market watchers noticed an unprecedented ($60 billion) surge in foreign official Repo (repurchase agreemen: a financial instrument for short term borrowing,) under the Fed's new FIMA repo facility, which means that the foreign banks or institutions desperately needed access to USD. 

The assumption was that it was Credit Suisse (or their new owner UBS) shoring up some shortfalls, but with the action of the last couple of days, others are worrying that there is more trouble brewing in the EU banking sector. 

After brief respite earlier in the week, European bank stocks are cratering once again, now at 3-month lows (catching down to Senior Financial CDS)... Deutsche Bank stock has crashed to 5-month lows... Deutsche Bank CDS, (Credit Default Swaps, a method of insuring lenders agaist borrowers defaulting on interest payments,) is soaring Commerzbank is also rising rapidly both are now higher than at peak of the COVID lockdowns... 

Notably, Deutsche Bank unexpectedly announced its decision to redeem a tier 2 bonds on Friday in a reassuring effort. “Deutsche’s decision to redeem (having received all required regulatory approvals) should be a reassuring signal to credit investors,” Autonomous analyst Stuart Graham wrote in a note on Friday. But instead, other Deutsche Bank AT1 bonds have plunged in price (with yields soaring above 16%). With the Credit Suisse meltdown only a week old, it looks like deja vu all over again. Lithium, the main component of EV batteries is a highly volatile material and a damaged battery can pose an unacceptable risk of spontaneous combustion, resulting in a fire that cannot be put out by conventional means (i.e. water, CO2,) forcing insurance companies to write off cars with only a few miles on the clock. Inevitably this is leading to higher premiums and undercutting gains from going electric.

Additionally, and in spite of ecoloons claims to the contrary, there is as yet no way of recycling battery packs and not imminent advances are likely to change that so clapped out and damaged EV battery packs are piling up in scrapyards in some countries, a previously unreported and insurmountable obstacle in what was supposed to be a "circular economy."

"We're buying electric cars for sustainability reasons," said Matthew Avery, research director at automotive risk intelligence company Thatcham Research. "But an EV isn't very sustainable if you've got to throw the battery away after a minor collision."

Battery packs can cost tens of thousands of pounds, dollars or euros to replace and represent up to 50% of an EV's price tag. The cost of installing a replacement battery pack can often exceed the second hand value of the car they have been installed in, making it economically unjustifable to replace them.

While some EV makers like Ford Motor Co (F.N) and General Motors Co (GM.N) say they have made battery packs more easily repairable, Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) has taken the opposite direction with its latest Model Y, the new structural battery pack of which has been described by experts as having "zero repairability."

Tesla have not responded to requests for comment.

A Reuters search of EV salvage sales in the U.S. and Europe shows a large portion of low-mileage Teslas, but also models from Nissan Motor Co (7201.T), Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS), Stellantis (STLAM.MI), BMW (BMWG.DE), Renault (RENA.PA) and others have been scapped after minor accidents.

"The number of write offs is going to increase as EV sales increase, so the handling of batteries is a crucial point," said Christoph Lauterwasser, managing director of the Allianz Center for Technology, a research institute owned by Allianz (ALVG.DE).

Unless Tesla and other EV manufacturers can produce repairable battery packs and provide third-party access to battery cell data so that independent mechanics and electricians can work on them, already-high insurance premiums will keep rising and more low-mileage cars get scrapped after collisions, insurers and industry experts said as reports were circulating that second hand EVs are practically unsaleable and everyday drivers are coming to realise that while EVs are fine as taxis or delivery vehicles, for the private motorist they are expensive city runabout or rich boys' toys.

In last week’s provincial elections in the Netherlands, an insurgent party, the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), took the largest vote share in all 12 Dutch provinces.

This is a remarkable win for the farmers’ party. The BBB (BoerBurgerBeweging) was only founded in 2019. It was born out of sympathy for the widespread Dutch farmers’ protests against the government, a populist movement which is still going strong today. The party is focussed on issues related to agriculture and the countryside. Among its proposals are a ministry for the countryside and allowing farmers to have more say in matters of agricultural policy. It also hopes to reduce the power of the European Union in the Netherlands, saying that while the Netherlands should remain a member state, the EU should aim to be merely a trading bloc, not a federal superstate (if only).

This unlikely victory means much more than just local seats. The provincial councils determine the makeup of the Dutch senate, its Eerste Kamer (first chamber). The Eerste Kamer functions much like Westminster’s House of Lords. It scrutinises the governing lower house (the Tweede Kamer) and has the power to reject proposed legislation.

In May, the new crop of provincial leaders will elect the Eerste Kamer, with the BBB projected to gain 17 seats, the largest of any party. This has the potential to massively shake up Dutch politics – particularly so given the scale of the losses endured last week by the current ruling coalition, comprised of prime minister Mark Rutte’s VVD party, the centrist D66 party, and the Christian-democratic CDA and ChristenUnie parties. After a weak performance in the provincial elections, the coalition parties are projected to end up with just 24 senate seats in May, down from their current total of 32.

In a chamber with just 75 seats, such swings are hugely significant. Parties with only one or two seats will now have an opportunity to really make their presence felt by teaming up with the BBB. Some of the ruling coalition parties may even be tempted to take up more populist policies, which are less likely to be blocked by a BBB-dominated senate. There is a real potential here for government policy to be brought more in line with voters’ concerns.

Nevertheless the paper makes much sense in the light of warnings from many other scientists, and may be one of the most important to date.

Pfizer, Moderna, Oxford AstraZeneca and Janssen injections all transmit code instructing our body cells to manufacture the toxic spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the microbe that causes Covid. The hope was that our immune system would respond to the jab by forming life-saving protection against the actual virus. But this was ‘the drug development miscalculation of all time’, McCullough says in a blog drawing attention to the review findings. 

There is now solid evidence, the authors say, of an unintended effect from the vaccines on many different body tissues, including the heart and brain. The immune system sees spike-producing cells as foreign, and starts to attack them. Cooking Oil Shortage Looms As Biofuel Demand Surges Due To 'Climate Solution'

A key ingredient commonly found in kitchens could face a shortage in the coming months as global biofuel consumption surges due to climate change initiatives. 

As reported by Bloomberg, Western nations are increasingly adopting plant-based energy sources, such as soybean or canola oils, or even animal fats, in a move to reduce carbon emissions by transitioning away from fossil fuels. This shift has presented a profitable opportunity for vegetable and palm oil producers to redirect some cooking oil supplies toward the transportation sector rather than their traditional use in food production. 

Hot demand for biofuels combined with the war in Ukraine disrupting ag flows and extreme weather in Argentina curbing vegetable oil supplies and other top producers reeling from declining production could push vegetable oil production into a deficit in the second half of the year, according to Thomas Mielke, executive director of Hamburg-based Oil World.

Mielke pointed out biofuels account for a large share of the vegetable oil market but only a fraction of energy demand. He's alarmed that biofuel targets pushed by governments might spark a cooking oil shortage. 

Soaring demand for biodiesel, renewable diesel, and biojet fuel has primarily been concentrated in the US, Europe, Brazil, and Indonesia. 

However, the global palm oil market could struggle to meet demand. Their production levels stagnate, with Indonesia and Malaysia responsible for 85% of global supply. 

"In periods of supply shortages, the necessary rationing of demand must not take place only on the shoulders of the food consumers.

"This is a lesson we have to learn from last year," Mielke said.

Global decarbonization efforts might result in unintended consequences for consumers, who could soon face the prospect of rising cooking oil prices or potential shortages.

Woke Is Authoritarian, The Left Is Now The Right

 

I'm old enough to remember the dawn of the hippe movement and shortly before that, though I was at the beginning of my teens at the time, the growth of the civil rights movement. These two things were connected by a collective desire of the part of their followers to create a society free from injustice and inequality, in which traditional prejudices did not define people.  Those laudable aims have, in a few decades, morphed into the excesses of progressive thinking and the screeching authoritarianism of the 'woke' movement and its ideology. The fact that politicians ranging from Ron DeSantis to Rishi Sunak deploy “woke” as a battle cry against pressure groups who hold that on any issue there is only one acceptable opinion and only one correct way of thinking. Not only conservatives and classical liberals (like myself,) but many socialists are increasingly uneasy with the form it has taken.

The woke discourse today is confusing because while it appeals to traditional left wing values: empathy for the marginalised, indignation at the plight of the oppressed, determination that historical wrongs can be righted, it adopts many of the tactics favoured by tyrants and totalitarian regimes in trying to win its arguments.  Thus the high minded principles are undermined by a range of theoretical assumptions — usually expressed as self-evident truths — that ultimately undermine them.

The concept of unity or universalism once defined the Left; solidarity was its watchword and the idea that the common bond of our shared humanity overrode considerations of nationality, race and religious affiliations distinguished it from the Right, which recognised no universal connections, and few real obligations, to anyone outside its own circle. 

The Left claimed there was only one race, the human race. Being a socialist or a liberal meant: caring about striking coal miners in Wales, or Republican volunteers in Spain, or freedom fighters in Africa, the ruination of good land by strip mining, the pollution of seas and rivers therough unregulated dumping of waste, and the exploitation of the many by the few. What united the left was the conviction that behind all the differences of time and space which separate us, human beings are deeply connected in a wealth of ways. To say that histories and geographies affect us is trivial. To say they determine us is false.

Going all in on racially and socially divisive identity politics, making everything political, and making politics itself a zero sum game had to end badly  Followers of the 'woke' ideology loudly and aggrssively declared everyone not aligned with their way of thinking as enemies to be marginalised and 'cancelled' (excluded from social activity,) they shouted down anyone who tried to warn that the path they are on is dangerously authoritarian. Even now, with pushbacks growing stronger every day, they  still seem incapable of truly understanding the Law of Unintended Consequences or the corruption of power. “Authoritarian tendencies?” “Undermining democracy?” That is what the progressive movement with its 'woke' ideology, have been doing! 

Much of the Classical Liberal Left has already abandoned them. They are called “far-right” now by the modern left even though they were not the ones who decided they love corporate power, political establishments, authoritarianism, hating on the rural and global poor and their innate conservatism. 

Progressives have abandoned the philosophical ideas that are central to any liberal or Left-wing standpoint: a commitment to universalism over tribalism.

As a liberal I was always cautious about such principles as unregulated immigration and the abolition of principles, simply because sometimes pragmatism must outweigh idealism, but even so many like me felt the progressive cause was a necessary and sometimes even admirable part of our politics. But now?

Now, progressivism has become more associated with the behaviour of Atilla the Hun. The only way to stop this new fascism, (an accurate description of what it is) is forcefully – just as force historically has always had to be deployed against fascism in all its many forms – both Left and Right

I don’t think the distinction we should pay attention to is between tribalism and universalism, but between authoritarianism and genuine liberalism. There are and always have been authoritarians out there in society, and what sham philosophies they parrot are always just the tools they’re trying to use at any given time to get and keep power. Presently, they’re pretending to be Progressives, but the censorship, government control – including violence – and infliction of their mandates by way of public shaming just shows them to be the same old wolves in lambs’ clothing. The trend in history leads in fits and starts and occasional reverses against them, and gosh do they hate that. They’re just mean and always have been.

The draft proposal, seen by Reuters on Tuesday, suggests creating a new type of vehicle category in the European Union for cars that can only run on carbon neutral fuels. In Spite Of Government Bail out And Takeover by UBS, Swiss bank giant Credit Suisse loses more than 60 percent of its value

 

As we reported on Monday, the collapse of Swiss banking giant Credit Suisse sent shock waves through global stock markets that are still reverbrating. Banking and finance corportions experienced a sharp drop in value following the announcement by Swiss authorities that troubled Credit Suisse would be taken over by UBS Group. In an effort to prevent an international banking crisis, central banks took action to alleviate concerns, the UK’s Daily Mail reported.

In premarket trading today, Credit Suisse shares continued to fall, now having dropped 60.5% since news of the bank's financial troubles broke at weekend. When markets opened this morning they hit a new low while UBS itself experienced an 8% loss. These movements came after a frenetic dumping of European banking shares on Asian markets, where what little investor confidence there had been in official measures to contain a banking crisis evaporated quickly, the report continued.

On Sunday, after a cash injection of €54billion by Switzerlands Central Bank had failed to save the retail banker, the most notable intervention since the global financial crisis of 2008 occurred, with UBS acquiring Credit Suisse for 3 billion francs ($3.2 billion) in a sudden merger, and the world’s leading central banks committing to daily dollar funding offerings. In a deal orchestrated by Swiss regulators, UBS Group AG agreed to take over the 167-year-old Credit Suisse Group AG and absorb potential losses of up to $5.4 billion, said the outlet.

The central banks of the world announced coordinated actions to stabilize banks. They also provided access to a loan facility that allows banks to borrow dollars from the United States if needed, which was a common practice during 2008’s crisis. However with the status of the US$ as global reserve currency no longer assured, a repeat of that policy may not guarantee the same result.

The UBS acquisition has caused investors to focus on the huge financial loss that Credit Suisse bondholders will suffer. This has increased anxiety about key risks such as contagion and the fragility of U.S. regional banking systems, said the report. There is also a continuing concern about the financial health on mant banks in the European Union.

Key player in the deal to save Credit Suisse were the central bank of Switzerland, the Swiss National Bank. That’s the very same central bank that had quietly bailed out UBS, the new owner of Credit Suisse, during the financial crisis of 2008 with the assistance of similar dollar swap lines from the Federal Reserve (the “Fed”) – the central bank of the U.S.

In 2011, following an audit of its activities by the Government Accountability Office into its activities the Federal Reserve “In October 2008 the Federal Reserve Board allowed the Swiss National Bank to use dollars under its swap line agreement to provide special assistance to UBS, a large Swiss banking organization. Specifically, on October 16, 2008, the Swiss National Bank announced that it would use dollars obtained through its swap line with FRBNY [the Federal Reserve Bank of New York] to help fund an SPV [Special Purpose Vehicle] it would create to purchase up to $60 billion of illiquid assets from UBS. According to FRBNY data, from December 11, 2008, through June 2009, Swiss National Bank drew dollar amounts generally not exceeding about $13 billion to help fund this SPV that served a function similar to that of the Maiden Lane SPVs. Federal Reserve Board staff acknowledged that this was an atypical use of swap line dollars as the swap line agreements were initially designed to help foreign central banks provide dollar loans broadly to institutions facing dollar funding strains.”

Little wonder then that the takeover of Credit Suisse by UBS has failed to restore confidence and in fact seems to have increased investors nervousness about what may be about to happen in global finance.

As markets opened today, European bank shares plunged by more than 5 percent. Credit Suisse’s shares plunged over 63 percent while those of acquirer UBS fell nearly 13 percent. The wider European STOXX 600 dropped 1.6 percent before making a modest recovery.

French President Macron Narrowly Survives Confidence Vote Over Dictatorial Pension Reforms

 

 

Riots erupted agross France again today after French President Emmanuel Macron pushed through his pension reform act, raising the official retirement age from 62 to 64m without botherring to present his proposal to the National Assembly so representatives could vote on bit. The public backlash has exceeded even the most pessimistic predictions, and there is now a good chance that a no-confidence vote this week could collapse his government. Even if he survives this second vote, having survived one  already, commentators say that opposition leader Marine Le Pen's nationalist party has never been in a better position to force Macron from, with the conservative populist emerging as the “victor” in the fierce debate over pension reform.

 Today's no-confidence motion spearheaded by a group of centrists won the support of 278 lawmakers in the lower house of parliament, a mere nine votes short of a majority.

Lawmakers are expected to vote later on a second no-confidence motion filed by Marine Le Pen’s National Rally, though that is unlikely tp pass as leftist parties will not support any proposal from Le Pen's party. 

However the battle does not end there. To pass his act, Macron’s had to invoke Article 49.3 of the French constitution, which allows him to bypass parliament and push through the increase in retirement age from 62 to 64 via decree, had been labeled the “nuclear option” by the French press.

Article 49.3 is a measure intended for use in times of national emergency and while pension reform is urgently needed it can hardly be described as an emergency so the president is on very shaky constitutional ground. And this may be Macron's undoing because within the article is a clause that a vote of no-confidence can be tabled within 24 hours after Article 49.3 is used.  Thus a third 'no confidence motion' can be tabled tomorrow and if it succeeds, it would mean the end of Macron’s government.

Although the left would never cooperate with Macron's party even on an issue on which they agree, the Liberal MP Charles de Courson could introduce an independent 'no confidence' vote and thus act as a bridge between the right and the left. The Liberals, acting as a neutral intermediary, could allow the right and the left to vote for their motion.  It has also been announced that the Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories (LIOT Group) is expected to table a no-confidence motion at 2:00 p.m. today as well.

Although the different factions of parliament have remained divided up until now, Macron’s dubious move to ram through pension reform without a democratic vote could finally unify the opposition against the man who, when elected vowed to rule in the style of a Roman God.
