IN DANTE’S Inferno, Hell is, counter-intuitively perhaps, freezing cold. In the 9^th Circle the Devil is entrapped in a lake of ice. An imaginative inversion of what we normally take Hell to be.

Clearly the 14^th century Italian poet didn’t get the memo from UN secretary general Antonio Guterres, for whom the Hell we currently suffer is boiling hot. Or if he did get it, perhaps he binned it. I wouldn’t blame him.

There is, of course, another difference between the two Hells: in Dante’s conception you know you’re in it; in Guterres’s diagnosis you need to be told you are. Some ‘Hell’ that is.

I jest of course. Guterres claim is not that we are currently in Hell, more that we are on the road to it. And that the diesel-fuelled vehicle we are travelling in is called ‘complacency’: a stubborn and bewildering refusal on the part of you and me to recalibrate, or rather abandon, our lives in accordance with the instructions of ‘settled science’. .. Globalists Say Britain Should Rejoin The EU, Are They Having A Laugh? German Citizens Are Not Amused

Germany: the 'sick man' of Europe again?

Despite the constant wailing and gnashing of teeth from globalists who insist on trying to blame Brexit for Britain's economic woes as if we alone are suffering a multi - layered economic crisis and that the only was out of it is for the UK to rejoin, the EU, taken as a single economy is in a worst state than the UK. The German economy, on which solvency in the EU has depended for a long time, is in deep trouble with inflation soaring and growth stagnant, and as long as current policies remain in place there is no sign of improvement in the foreseeable future. The serial crises of the past decade and a half, from global financial meltdown through immigration, political uncertainty, COVID and the aftermath of lockdowns to the Ukraine war, energy crisis and sky high inflation, have exposed the weaknesses of the country's business model.

Shortly before the turn of the century British business magazine The Economist published a series of essays and articles on the German economy, which concluded by describing the country as the sick man of Europe. Although this was at the time when the rest of the world was still being propagandised into believing in the German Industrial Powerhouse the insult served as a wake-up call for German politicians, which, having bought into their own propaganda was still living in the boom years that followed reunification reunification. Germany's Federal Government had been delaying much needed reforms, hoping like Mr. Micawber that 'something would turn up.

Prodded by the Economist and other critics the government of Chancellor Schröder introduced major reforms to the labour market, directing the main thrust of its efforts towards reforming Germany's generous social welfare program. In particular, the government wanted to reduce the costs of the bloated welfare system; with an ageing population and high levels of sickness and disability, the number of beneficiaries was increasing at a rate exceeding the number of contributors, thus driving the state budget close to insolvency. High benefit levels had to be paid for and economic recovery was hampered by high taxes. In response to this Schroder attempted to relieve the burden on businesses of the country’s high taxes and labour costs, which had driven away foreign investment and encouraged German firms to close German plants and move them overseas.

These steps slowly trurned things around and in 2014, a group of economists from Berlin and London wrote that Germany had developed"From sick man of Europe to an economic superstar."

However in 2023 the wheel has turned full circle and German economy is again struggling. For the final quarter of 2022 and the first of 2023 economic output has declined putting the national economy in "technical recession." In the most recent quarter, Germany's gross domestic product (GDP) has stagnated at the level of the previous quarter, and all the important economic indicators show a decline.

"Germany's economic situation is darkening," was the conclusion of the president of the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research at the University of Munich, Clemens Fuest. The Institute surveys 9,000 executives each month about the current state of their businesses and their expectations for the next six months. The resulting Business Climate Index (July 2023) has fallen for the third month in a row. The Institute researchers expect Germany's GDP to decline again during the current quarter. ...

Commerzbank chief economist Jörg Krämer reinforces the opinion of Clemens Fuest and the Munich Institute for Economic Research: "Unfortunately, there is no improvement in sight," Krämer told the Reuters news agency. "The worldwide interest rate increases are taking their toll, especially since German businesses are already unsettled due to the eroding quality of their location."

The country's industrial sector, the showpiece of its economy, is causing the most concern. It accounts for a relatively large portion of Germany's gross value added (GVA), about 24%, and has been suffering global trends along with other developed nations. A worldwide economic slump in the wake of the COVID pandemic fiasco added to globalist ideologies' influence on policy making it easier for manufacturers to move operations from highly regulated areas such as the EU to nations ith more lax regulatoty and business taxation jurisdictions. Germany's once mighty engineering and automobile sectors, which were heavily reliant on exports, are feeling the effects of foreign customers holding back while cheaper imports from China and other 'emerging' economies flood the domestic market.

And on top of all this a decade of unregulated mass immigration of semi - literate, poorly educated, culturally incompatible, unemployable migrants from third world nations has bloated the welfare system again.

Compared with other industrialized nations, Germany is performing exceptionally poorly — and according to an estimate by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be the only large country to have a shrinking economic output.

Don't overstate 1.5 degrees C threat, new IPCC head says

Jim Skea, the new head of the UN's IPCC, said it's not helpful to imply that a temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius is an existential threat to humanity. He calls for a balanced approach to the climate change debate.

The newly appointed head of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Jim Skea, spoke to two major German news outlets over the weekend, soon after his appointment to the role.

Speaking to weekly magazine Der Spiegel, in an interview first published on Saturday, Skea warned against laying too much value on the international community's current nominal target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared the pre-industrial era.

"We should not despair and fall into a state of shock" if global temperatures were to increase by this amount, he said.

In a separate discussion with German news agency DPA, Skea expanded on why.

"If you constantly communicate the message that we are all doomed to extinction, then that paralyzes people and prevents them from taking the necessary steps to get a grip on climate change," he said.

"The world won't end if it warms by more than 1.5 degrees," Skea told Der Spiegel. "It will however be a more dangerous world."

Surpassing that mark would lead to many problems and social tensions, he said, but still that would not constitute an existential threat to humanity.

The international community's stated target is currently to limit global warming to the 1.5 degrees Celsius target, even though UN estimates suggest that the current commitments made by countries are actually likely to fall far short of their nominal goal.

Latest EV Model To Go On Sale Is Dangerous - You Could Die Laughing

For years those of us who have managed to retain a grip on reality through the increasing insanity of 21st century life have been saying that the transition to electric cars, a major part of the 'net zero' policy, was not going to happen any time soon. Electric Cars fine for a city runabout but high cost put them beyond the budget of most people and poor range, slow charging and lack of charging points makes them impractical as long distance cars.

The cheapest EV with a decent range per full charge currently on sale in the UK costs over £30,000, almost twice the price of an equivalent petrol or diesel car.

However, all he time those of us whose nature makes us sceptical of anything that is being hyped by government and the media, 'experts' have been telling us that technology is advancing all the time and electric cars were about to become a fraction of the cost they have been previously bue to new advances in design, engineering and battery manufacture. And at last, just as governments appear to be developing a bit of common sense about their rash pledges to ban the sale of conventional cars by 2030, it appears there are much cheaper electric cars in the pipeline (from China - where else?).

The talk of the Shanghai Motor Show in April wasn't some new super-duper electric sports jobbie but a super-cheap new EV called the Seagull (pictured below.) Manufactured by BYD, the Chinese battery and car behemoth, the basic Seagull claims a 190-mile range and a list price in China of 78,000 yuan (£8,400) and it looks like something a five year old might produce if you asked them to draw a car.

Don't get too excited though. the company currently has no plans to sell the Seagull in the UK, probably because it falls way short of our standards for roadworthyness.

The hype around the potential growth of the electric car market has sent prices of the minerals needed to make the lithium - ion batteries that power EVs, lithium, nickel and cobalt, rocketing and China currently controls the majority of known resources of these minerals.

That makes them expensive because the Chinese are not interested in doing western car buyers any favours. So one of the limiting factors in the growth of electric car sales (apart from the comedy factor - see above,) is that production cannot increase in line with government and scientists wishful thinking until mineral supplies become more widely available. And that availability is regulated by the whim of the Chinese Communist Party

Meanwhile, the UK government has stopped offering grants to help EV buyers which will decrease sales even further on top of a recent decline as potential second hand buyers became aware that a new set of batteries will cost them more than the car is worth and potential new car buyers realised that after four years their £40K car will have no trade in value because dealers can't shit second hand EVs.

Or at least, to be acccurate, rewilding is partially to blame for Mediterranean forest fires. Which is darkly amusing as that man most insistent upon rewilding, George Monbiot, is trying to tell us that it’s all about climate change.

Why? Because an increase in number & spread of wildfires was a consistent forecast by climate scientists. Like many other climate science forecasts, it has materialised with a vengeance. Current fire patterns can clearly be attributed to global heating:

Environmentalists Hype The Summer Heat, Ignore The Winter Chill And Call It Science

You might think the world is burning and we're all doomed if you beleived the latest hysterical ravings of climate scientists, but while wildfires rage in Greece, here in the north of England it's so cold I've had to put my heating on as we endure the coldest July on record.

According to Daniel Turner, founder and executive director of the nonprofit climate change scepticism advocacy group Power the Future, who insists that environmental activists are hyping up heat events such as the hot weather parts of the United States and southern Europe seeing right now. While mainstream media reporters are whipping themselves into a frenzy over the summer's heat, the kind of temperatures being recorded should not be causing surprise and dismay since since the affected areas are part of the Northern Hemisphere, where the months of July and August “should be hot,” according to Mr. Turner. He accused environmentalist scaremongering groups of hyping up heat while ignoring the recent intense winters experienced in the same areas of the world.

“It’s very strange, though, that the environmental left loves to talk about the summer, they love to talk about the heat. Because it’s sexy, the heat is oppressive, it’s very uncomfortable. But the cold is actually much more deadly,” he said.

“On average, four times more people die of the cold. And yet when we have terrible winters, we don’t blame that on climate change. We just call that winter because it doesn’t fit the narrative that the planet is getting warmer. So they just ignore the winter."

This is something my fellow 'conspiracy theorist' Graham Lear and I have noticed over perhaps as much as fifteen years now. While year after year environmentalist groups and government departments claim a new record has been set for the hottest year ever, either the data is being manipulated or these wonderful sciencetits (sic) with their marvellous mathematical models are deficient in basic numeracy skills because they do not understand how to calculate a simple average.

Turner's stance is refreshing but he faces a tough battle to be heard above the screeching of the numerous climate change alarmist groups such as the one which responded to his criticism of alarmism with predictions of imminent desolation and catastrophe as a result of our climate crimes;

This article makes the statement;

”Unless the world rapidly stops burning fossil fuels, these events will become even more common and the world will experience heatwaves that are even hotter and longer-lasting. A heatwave like the recent ones would occur every 2-5 years in a world that is 2°C warmer than the preindustrial climate.”

When I was working in the nuclear industry in the 1980s the engineers and designers would refer to the academic experts who advised government policy makers as "often in error, never in doubt". It seems the climate ‘experts’ are cast from the same material, they have no doubt whatsoever that whatever is happening to the climate (if anything) it is all the fault of humanity.

The more they repeat this mantra with the certainty of zealots, the more it seems like the credo of some weird doomsday cult, there are echoes of the notion of original sin and that we are all sinners and debase ourselves before the righteous and sacrifice all the benefits of civilisation in order to be saved.

In this respect it echoes the Abrahamic religions in the way it uses guilt to keep they leity in line and preserve the power of the elite priesthood. Judaism, Christianity and Islam all rely on keeping people in fear of divine retribution but having been brought up in what can be loosely described as the Christian tradition I can only comment on the scam that has held Christian churches together for almost 2000 years. When people say to me now, "Jesus died on the cross for your sins," I will answer, "That's tough but I didn't ask him to."

I refuse to feel guilt about a myth. We are all responsible for our own actions and have a duty to inform ourselves of the likely consequences of what we do and then to behave as decently as we can in the circumstances. But just as I reject allegations that I bear some responsibility for the death of a charcter believed to have lived 2000 years ago, I am no more going to accept responsibility for extreme weather events when those who accuse me are flying around the world in private jets to lecture us more humble folk on the sacrifices we must make in order to 'save the planet.'

It seems to me that if we do as the doom mongers suggest and immediately and suddenly stop burning fossil fuels, the misery and suffering created will be immense and will hit the poorest in society and the people of the poorest nations hardest.

Another Setback For UK's Net Zero Green Dreams As Cost Rise Faster Than China's CO2 Emissions

The UK ruling elite's dreams of leading the world to a net zero future suffered another setback today when Swedish energy company Vattenfall announced work on the Norfolk Boreas offshore wind farm is to be suspended indefinitely. The reasons given are spiralling costs, uncertainty in supply lines and the economic reality that despite all the propaganda about 'wind power is free' over the past few years, offshore wind farms are hideously expensive to operate as well as being enormously damaging to the marine environment.

As this blog has always said, if you pick a fight with nature, nature will always win. Thus it should be no surprise that one of the UK’s largest offshore wind farm projects to date has has run aground, ironically partly due to lack of wind because 2023 has so far been notable for a high number of windless or low wind days, but also due to the rocketing costs of raw materials needed to make wind turbines costs. The fact that China and Russia control most sources of these vital raw materials should also be no surprise.

Swedish energy group, Vattenfall, has been forced to halt construction and planning work on its 1.4GW Norfolk Boreas site off England's east coast, following a 40% increase in budgeted costs. Clearly, “going green” isn’t the path to instant riches and ongoing prosperity the government's propagandists would have you believe.

Anna Borg, Vattenfall’s CEO wrote in a statement released today:

“What we see today, it simply doesn’t make sense to continue this project.”

This news blows a huge hole in the UK government's the commitment to increasing its offshore wind capacity 300 per cent by 2030 in order to push forward the total decarbonisation of the electricity system. It also hihlights the truth of another claim by independent commentators that has been dismissed as a 'conspiracy theory' by mainstream media and academics, that the cost efficiency and reliability of these 'renewable energy' projects remain questionable.

For over 20 years the UK government has been promoting the wonders of wind power projects to meet its unrealistic net-zero targets, apparently oblivious to the reality that we cannot control the wind and when there is insufficient movement of air (i.e. below 12 mph) a wind turbine is not going to generate a single watt of electricity. However nature is biting back, and with costs spiraling out of control, the flight from fossil fuels looks as if it is struggling against into a headwinds.

This latest fiasco forged by the government's scientific advisers stands as a testament to the impracticality of impulsively jumping on the renewable energy bandwagon while shouting "We're following the science," without first thoroughly investigating the practical limitations of technologies that look great on paper, in mathematical models, or under controlled conditions in the laboratory.

The now defunct, if we are honest, Norfolk Boreas offshore wind farm was intended to be the flagship of the country’s major offshore wind projects. Its aim was to provide low cost electricity to 1.5 million homes with up to 140 turbines. Now the developers have acknowledged that projects with low locked-in electricity prices have turned uneconomical due to these escalating costs and disruptions.

In February this year our Daily Stirrer publication reported that Vattenfall, along with Denmark’s Ørsted and other wind farm developers, were seeking tax breaks or subsidies as a remedy to their fiscal woes which had been created by governments pandering to extremist pressure groups and prematurely closing gas, coal and nuclear power plants, capping wells and abandoning mines on the strength of assurances from mathematical modellers that wind power could supply all the energy needs of the world's fifth largest economy. Perhaps now the twin mirage of “cheap” renewable energy and the infallibility of science are revealed to have been nothing but a smoke and mirrors stunt, perhaps vote seeking politicians and rent - seeking science journalists may have to acknowledge the economic reality that has been hidden behind the curtain.

Scientists says Nuclear Is The Way Forward For Clean Energy - Do Ursidae Defecate In Sylvan Landscapes?

Scientists, politicians and media have been screeching, for the past 30 or so years, about the need to transition away from carbon based fossil fuels, (coal, gas and oil,) as a matter or urgency or risk destroying the life supporting ecology of our planet by overloading the system with Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emitted from human activity. Unfortunately scientists are not as smart as they think they are, politicians are not smart but know how to manipulate people into thinking they are, and the media will write or say anything that will earn a Euro a Yuan a buck or a pound.

But so long as politicians think supporting decarbonisation will earn them votes and scientists believe producing scare stories about catastrophic climate change being an existential threat to humanity will save them from the thing they fear most, (having to get proper jobs and get some effing work done,) there are a few major obstacles between civilised communities and the goal to transition to a net zero-carbon economy. In spite of advances in renewable energy technology so called 'clean energy', this CO2 free electricity is mainly produced from intermittent and unreliable sources. Thus the gas and coal fired plants must be kept running as backup for when the wind does not blow and the sun doesn't shine.

Additionally the inability of 'sustainables' to sustain supply twenty four hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days a year, and the incredible economic growth of emerging economies such as China, India, Pakistan, Brazil and Nigeria and demand for energy is growing at a rate the producers are finging had to keep pace with. After 30 years of eco - activists' wailing and gnashing of teeth over the polluting effect of CO2, a trace atmospheric gas that is essential to the survival of carbon based life forms (i.e. every living thing,) and demands that CO2 emissions be radically reduced, globally more fossil fuels than ever, are being consumed and our rate of CO2 production is in fact increasing, not heading to zero.

But there’s a well established, totally reliable, environmentally friendly solution with over sixty years history in energy production, nuclear energy, still waiting for its moment to become the primary source for domestic and industrial electricity is CO2 free and ticks most of the other boxes.Good grief, next they'll be informing us, in their lofty and condescending way that yes, bears do actually shit in the woods. Sadly nuclear technology is still being held back by prejudices based on decades of environmentalist propaganda but throughout the decades of scaremongering about peak oil, acid rain, and climate change the answer to our energy problems has been staring policy makers in the face.

Having worked in the UK nuclear industry for five years (not as a physicist or engineer but a humble Informations Systems and Networks Consultant,) thus able to talk to highly knowledgable people and read publications not available to the general public, I can support the expansion of nuclear energy as an environmentally friendly solution to address both the world’s energy problems and, perhaps counterintuitively, as a catalyst for peace and unity. If CO2 is the enemy as those who insist "The Science Is Settled" would have us believe, then unclear is at least as environment friendly as wind turbines or solar panels and infintely more reliable.

Additionally nuclear energy has the ability to be scaled at an industrial level, globally: Uranium 235 has millions more times energy than coal or oil. In order to provide the equivalent power to a single, 1 Gigawatt nuclear plant, an estimated 9,100,000 2 Megawatt wind turbines (yes, that's nine million,) would have to be built, covering an area of around 350 square miles. Peak UK demand is approximately 30 Gigawatts. And the great myth of this environmentally friendly energy source, its dirty secret, is that in reality it is far from CO2 free, it simply moves the emissions away from the generating plant itself to the places where the materials are mined, the cement for the enormous concrete beds the giant turbine towers neeed is produced and the equipment is manufactured.

Nuclear energy became unpopular in the 1950s due to the association with nuclear weapons and perceived risks of imminent buclear conflict stoked up by cold war rhetoric. But its actual safety record in electricity generation shows it is one of the safest sources of energy, We must get over our cognitive and political bias: Nuclear energy is necessary and safe, and not the same as nuclear weapons.It is essential to expand the development of nuclear energy not only to meet satisfy the scaremongers and meet their often unrealistc demands on the carbon-free energy transition, but because nuclear energy is indeed environmentally friendly, and necessary.

I believe the so called 'fossil fuels' (a misnomer BTW,) will be with us and our descendents for centuries to come, generating electricity, fuelling vehicles providing heat for homes, commercial and industrial premises are not their only uses. How would we survive without plastics for example.
